Assessing The Use Of Tsunami Simulations As A Tool To Predict Source Magnitudes And Locations Of Paleoearthquakes In Chile, Rebeca Isabel Becerra Jan 2018

Assessing The Use Of Tsunami Simulations As A Tool To Predict Source Magnitudes And Locations Of Paleoearthquakes In Chile, Rebeca Isabel Becerra

All Master's Theses

A long-term goal of paleotsunami studies is the ability to predict paleoearthquake parameters based on tsunami deposits found on land. Chile provides an exemplary location for testing methods of making these predictions because the historical record includes 41 major earthquakes as far back as 1562 AD, and there are many known paleotsunami deposits throughout the region. Using these records as a comparison tool, I evaluated simulated tsunami wave heights and inundation extent with the tsunami model GeoClaw for nine hypothetical tsunamigenic large earthquakes (Mw 8.6, 8.8, and 9.0) in south-central Chile with epicenters at -35.1º, -38.8º, and -42.9º. As …

Stream Water And Soil Water Chemistry After The Table Mountain Wildfire, Washington, Usa, Vincent J. Roccanova

All Master's Theses

Analyses of major and trace elements, major ions, and nutrient concentrations were made to investigate how stream water and soil water chemistry changed over 16 months following the Table Mountain wildfire. Sites with different burn severity were also compared. The fire occurred in 2012 in Kittitas County, north of Ellensburg, Washington. Samples were collected at severely burned, moderately burned, and unburned field sites from within and adjacent to the wildfire perimeter. Total nitrogen concentrations increased in the second year after the fire in both the severely and moderately burned sites. In contrast, total phosphorus was variable at all three sites …

The Utah Snow Load Study, Brennan Bean, Marc Maguire, Yan Sun Jan 2018

The Utah Snow Load Study, Brennan Bean, Marc Maguire, Yan Sun

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Recent reports of snow related building collapses across the western United States in early 2017 highlight the importance of snow load considerations in building design. Specifying such design snow loads requires a proper balance between safety and economy. As articulated by Nowak and Collins (2012): "Conceptually, we can design [a] structure to reduce the probability of failure, but increasing the safety...beyond a certain optimum level is not always economical." It is the search for this optimum level of safety that has motivated the development of design ground snow loads at state and local levels.

Accurate Measurement Of Main Aerosol Constituents From Heated Tobacco Products (Htps): Implications For A Fundamentally Different Aerosol, Hovik J. Gasparyan Jan 2018

Accurate Measurement Of Main Aerosol Constituents From Heated Tobacco Products (Htps): Implications For A Fundamentally Different Aerosol, Hovik J. Gasparyan

Biology Faculty Works

ISO 4387 Standard determines the main aerosol constituents (total particulate matter, water, nicotine, and nicotine-free-dry-particulate matter, referred to as “tar”) in cigarette mainstream smoke (ISO, 2000). Heated Tobacco Products (also called Tobacco Heating Products or Heat-not-Burn Products) are designed to form aerosol by heating tobacco rather than burning like in combustible cigarettes. In this study we have evaluated the suitability of ISO 4387 Standard to be adapted for quantifying main aerosol constituents for HTP aerosol. HTP emissions have much higher levels of water and humectants (e.g., glycerol) in dynamic equilibria between gaseous and particulate phases. Several modifications to ISO 4387 …

Biology Faculty Works

An important question in undergraduate curricula is that of incorporating computing into STEM courses for majors and non-majors alike. What does it mean to teach “computing” in this context? What are some of the benefits and challenges for students and instructors in such courses? This paper contributes to this important dialog by describing three undergraduate courses that have been developed and taught at Harvey Mudd College and Loyola Marymount University. Each case study describes the course objectives, implementation challenges, and assessments.

What Is Mormon Transhumanism? And Is It Mormon?, Gregory L. Smith Jan 2018

What Is Mormon Transhumanism? And Is It Mormon?, Gregory L. Smith

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Some sources have described Mormonism as the faith most friendly to the intellectual movement known as Transhumanism. This paper reviews an introductory paper by the past President of the Mormon Transhumanist Association. A syllogism that purports to show that Mormonism is compatible with — or even requires — Transhumanism is analyzed. The syllogism’s premises are shown to misunderstand or misrepresent LDS scripture and doctrine. The proffered Transhumanist conception of “human nature” and the perspective offered by LDS scripture are compared and found to be incompatible. Additional discrepancies between the Transhumanist article’s representation of LDS doctrine and the actual teachings of …

Dehumanization And Peace, Kent P. Jackson Jan 2018

Dehumanization And Peace, Kent P. Jackson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Those who follow world events are painfully aware that peace in the Middle East — and particularly in the Holy Land — seems eternally elusive. From a distance we watch events unfold which we are not able to fully comprehend because of that very distance. There are individuals who are burdened with the devastating reality of living with war and perpetual turmoil in the Holy Land. One of those is Sahar Qumsiyeh, a Palestinian Arab Latter-day Saint who grew up in the West Bank near Bethlehem. Her story of how she converted to Mormonism and learned how to find peace …

Archean Phosphorus Liberation Induced By Iron Redox Geochemistry, Barry Herschy, Sae Jung Chang, Ruth Blake, Aivo Lepland, Heather Abbott-Lyon, Jacqueline Sampson, Zachary Atlas, Terence P. Kee, Matthew A. Pasek Jan 2018

Archean Phosphorus Liberation Induced By Iron Redox Geochemistry, Barry Herschy, Sae Jung Chang, Ruth Blake, Aivo Lepland, Heather Abbott-Lyon, Jacqueline Sampson, Zachary Atlas, Terence P. Kee, Matthew A. Pasek

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The element phosphorus (P) is central to ecosystem growth and is proposed to be a limiting nutrient for life. The Archean ocean may have been strongly phosphorus-limited due to the selective binding of phosphate to iron oxyhydroxide. Here we report a new route to solubilizing phosphorus in the ancient oceans: reduction of phosphate to phosphite by iron(II) at low (°C) diagenetic temperatures. Reduction of phosphate to phosphite was likely widespread in the Archean, as the reaction occurs rapidly and is demonstrated from thermochemical modeling, experimental analogs, and detection of phosphite in early Archean rocks. We further demonstrate that the higher …

Market Ambiguity And Individual Investor Information Demand, Rajib Hasan, Abdullah Kumas, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith Jan 2018

Market Ambiguity And Individual Investor Information Demand, Rajib Hasan, Abdullah Kumas, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

We examine whether ambiguity in the market leads to an increase in information demand by individual investors. Drawing on the asset-pricing model proposed by Mele and Sangiorgi (2015), which incorporates market ambiguity, we measure individual information demand using daily Google searches and measure market ambiguity using a metric based on the market trades of institutional investors. We find that individual investors increase their information demand during periods of greater market ambiguity. We also provide evidence that information demand from individual investors spikes around earnings announcement days primarily when market uncertainty is driven by net-selling activity. Overall, these results suggest that …

Multi-Robot Complete Coverage Using Directional Constraints, Stefanus Malan Jan 2018

Multi-Robot Complete Coverage Using Directional Constraints, Stefanus Malan

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Complete coverage relies on a path planning algorithm that will move one or more robots, including the actuator, sensor, or body of the robot, over the entire environment. Complete coverage of an unknown environment is used in applications like automated vacuum cleaning, carpet cleaning, lawn mowing, chemical or radioactive spill detection and cleanup, and humanitarian de-mining.

The environment is typically decomposed into smaller areas and then assigned to individual robots to cover. The robots typically use the Boustrophedon motion to cover the cells. The location and size of obstacles in the environment are unknown beforehand. An online algorithm using sensor-based …

Average Modeling And Evaluation Of 18-Pulse Autotransformer Rectifier Unit Without Interphase Transformers, Shahbaz Khan, Xiaobin Zhang, Husan Ali, Haider Zaman, Muhammad Saad, Bakht Muhammad Khan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an improved average model and evaluation of an 18-pulse autotransformer rectifier unit (ATRU) in differential delta configuration. Average models remove the switching behavior of diode rectifiers and high bandwidth transients, which not only facilitates simulation of power systems by reducing computational cost but also enables impedance-based stability analysis for large complex power systems. To experimentally validate the proposed average model, a 2-kW, 18-pulse ATRU has been tested and the results of the derived model are compared with those of the switching model and experimental prototype. Computed transfer function of load impedance from the proposed average model closely …

From The Academy To The Marketplace: An Analysis Of New York And London Fine Art Schools' Responses To The Market In Pedagogy And Curricula, Adelaide Dunn

MA Theses

As fine art degrees expand in cost and popularity, the need to educate students about the complex art market they are entering is more urgent now than ever before. But despite the globalizing art market’s continuing demand for emerging talent, its opaque and hypercompetitive nature generates significant obstacles for fine art graduates. This is exacerbated by the relative absence of practical business and legal skills implemented in fine art curricula across the U.S. and U.K. Statistical and anecdotal evidence highlighting the many entrepreneurial skills required to develop and sustain a professional practice, demonstrates the need for more comprehensive professional development …

Phase And Gain Margins For A Class Of Nonlinear Systems, Siddharth Sankar Das Jan 2018

Phase And Gain Margins For A Class Of Nonlinear Systems, Siddharth Sankar Das

Theses

In this thesis, new definitions of Practical Phase and Gain stability margins (PPM/PGM) for a class of nonlinear systems (a single-input-single output linear time invariant (SISO LTI) plant with a nonlinear control), specifically, in systems with common nonlinearities like saturation and relay, are proposed. The practical Gain and Phase stability margins are presented as the maximum increase in the gain and the maximum phase shift that can added to the frequency characteristic of the linear plant such that there are no limit cycles predicted or the sufficient stability condition is satisfied. The stability margins are computed using the Describing-Function-Harmonic-Balance (DF-HB) …

Reconfigurable Displaced Phase Center Antennas With Focal Plane Phased Arrays, Michael Henley

Theses

In this thesis, a novel displaced phase center antenna technique is introduced and demonstrated. A proof of concept study is performed using a three-element linear array, placed in the focal plane of a parabolic reflector antenna. Then, a seven-element circular focal plane phased array as the primary feed for a parabolic reflector antenna will be utilized and further investigated to realize a reconfigurable aperture antenna, capable of electronically displacing the antenna phase center location along any direction with no mechanical means. The proposed technique will be tested using both front-fed and offset parabolic reflector geometries. Results will show that, while …

Identifications In Escape Regions Of The Parameter Space Of Cubic Polynomials, Chad Estabrooks Jan 2018

Identifications In Escape Regions Of The Parameter Space Of Cubic Polynomials, Chad Estabrooks

Open Access Dissertations

We investigate a relationship between escape regions in slices of the parameter space of cubic polynomials. The focus of this work is to give a precise description of how to obtain a topological model for the boundary of an escape region in the slice consisting of all cubic polynomials with a marked critical point belonging to a two cycle. To obtain this model, we start with the unique escape region in the slice consisting of all maps with a fixed marked critical point, and make identifications which are described using the identifications which are made in the lamination of the …

The Consensus Myth In Criminal Justice Reform, Benjamin Levin Jan 2018

The Consensus Myth In Criminal Justice Reform, Benjamin Levin

Publications

It has become popular to identify a “consensus” on criminal justice reform, but how deep is that consensus, actually? This Article argues that the purported consensus is much more limited than it initially appears. Despite shared reformist vocabulary, the consensus rests on distinct critiques that identify different flaws and justify distinct policy solutions. The underlying disagreements transcend traditional left/right political divides and speak to deeper disputes about the state and the role of criminal law in society.

The Article maps two prevailing, but fundamentally distinct, critiques of criminal law: (1) the quantitative approach (what I call the “over” frame); and …

Multimodal Medical Imaging Repository And Information System In Epilepsysurgery, Gülsüm Akdeni̇z, İbrahi̇m Atli, Fati̇h Vehbi̇ Çelebi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Surgery is an option for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, but it requires a comprehensive assessment. Electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and functional MRI (fMRI) are used to localize the epileptogenic zone, which directly affects the surgery outcome. Accessing EEG, MRI, and fMRI results and patient information simultaneously using traditional methods might result in misinformation and increase the workload of clinicians. In this study, we developed a modern web-based repository system for the preoperative evaluation of epilepsy disorder, including multimodal medical images and patient information. Our dedicated system is enriched with clinical metadata that are not currently available and is …
