Signing Exact English; A Simultaneously Spoken And Signed Communication Option In Deaf Education, Kabian Rendel, Jill Bargones, Britnee Blake, Barbara Luetke, Deborah S. Stryker
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Current reviews of the literature continue to evidence that even with current assistive listening technology, many children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HH) persist in demonstrating English language and literacy gaps compared to hearing peers (e.g., C. Mayer 2016; C. Mayer, & Trezek, 2018). For example, Geers, Tobey, Moog, and Brenner (2008) reported that “only about half” (p. 262) of children using cochlear implants (CIs) (and no sign to support their speech production) achieved age-appropriate abilities by third grade. Given the continually-reported variability of results (e.g., Harris, 2016; C. Mayer, & Trezek, 2018), an alternative is warranted. Signing Exact English …

Predictors Of Early Numeracy: Applied Measures In Two Childcare Contexts, Belinda Blevins-Knabe, Jacob Esplin, Ann Berhout Austin, Shawnee M. Hendershot
Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications
The purpose of the current research was: (1) To assess differences in early numeracy, phonological awareness, receptive language, executive functioning, and working memory for children in two childcare settings (family and center); (2) To determine whether applied measures of phonological awareness and executive functioning could serve as predictors of numeracy performance. Children (N = 89) ranging in age from 39 to 75 months were recruited from state-licensed childcare centers and family childcare homes. Teacher ratings of executive functioning were significantly related to early number skills, phonological awareness, and receptive language, but none of the parent ratings were significantly related to …
Locating The Critical Component In Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge ( Tpack ): An Examination Of How Graduate Students Recruit Tpack And Critical Digital Literacy Into Classroom Practices., Vicki Ann Hosek
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this study were to gain an understanding of how practicing teachers believe they are prepared to meaningfully and critically integrate technology into their classroom practices; and to understand how practicing teachers recruited those beliefs into their teaching practices. This included gaining an understanding of what they believed led to their engagement in the critical dimensions of technology use in their teaching practices. This mixed-methods study contained two phases. In Phase 1, 58 graduate students in a College of Education completed a newly developed Critical Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (C-TPACK) survey containing likert-scale and open-ended questions. A subset …

Promoting The Social Competence Of Each And Every Child In Inclusive Early Childhood Classrooms, Adam Kennedy
Promoting The Social Competence Of Each And Every Child In Inclusive Early Childhood Classrooms, Adam Kennedy
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
Social competence is part of a complex system that extends beyond the young child, necessitating prevention, assessment, and intervention. In this chapter, social competence in early childhood is examined considering existing research, developmental theory, and best practices and policies, many of which (on their own) address limited facets of a complex set of interactive competencies and outcomes. The potential and pitfalls of inclusive early childhood classroom structures relative to supporting interaction and social skill development are explored. Next, some of the most common social issues related to disabilities are described. These include deficits associated with specific developmental issues, such as …

Latinx Children’S Push And Pull Of Spanish Literacy And Translanguaging, Kathy Bussert-Webb, Hanna M. Masso, Karin A. Lewis
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
We explored 19 Latinx children’s literacies in Spanish and translanguaging by asking, “What are Latinx children’s experiences and beliefs regarding Spanish and translanguaging reading and writing? How do tutorial staff and teacher candidates (TCs) help the youth to resist hegemonic and bracketing practices of English-only?” This study took place in a South Texas tutorial agency, where children voluntarily attended for after-school homework help. Data sources consisted of questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, hobby essays, and newsletter articles. Most children reported negative school-related language experiences and expressed dislike and unease regarding Spanish and translanguaging reading and writing, although they lived less than …

Personalized Microblog Sentiment Classification Via Adversarial Cross-Lingual Learning, Weichao Wang, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Yifei Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sentiment expression in microblog posts can be affected by user’s personal character, opinion bias, political stance and so on. Most of existing personalized microblog sentiment classification methods suffer from the insufficiency of discriminative tweets for personalization learning. We observed that microblog users have consistent individuality and opinion bias in different languages. Based on this observation, in this paper we propose a novel user-attention-based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model with adversarial cross-lingual learning framework. The user attention mechanism is leveraged in CNN model to capture user’s language-specific individuality from the posts. Then the attention-based CNN model is incorporated into a novel …
Indigenous Stylistic & Conceptual Innovation In The Uppsala Map Of Mexico City (C. 1540), Jennifer Saracino
Indigenous Stylistic & Conceptual Innovation In The Uppsala Map Of Mexico City (C. 1540), Jennifer Saracino
Artl@s Bulletin
The only known map of Mexico City painted with the collaboration of indigenous artists, the Mapa Uppsala (c. 1540) depicts the city and surrounding Valley of Mexico. This essay counters previous characterizations of the map’s formal composition as one that has fully espoused European cartographic modes. This essay contextualizes the Mapa Uppsala within the extant corpus of pre-Hispanic and early colonial cartographies to demonstrate that a closer analysis of pictorial conventions and structures can shed light on how and why the artists might have consciously selected particular pictorial strategies.

Exploring Explicit Fanfiction As A Vehicle For Sex Education Among Adolescents And Young Adults, Donna Jeanne Barth
Exploring Explicit Fanfiction As A Vehicle For Sex Education Among Adolescents And Young Adults, Donna Jeanne Barth
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fanfiction consists of works written by amateurs using pre-existing characters and plots, often shared online for free. Although fanfiction began long before the advent of the internet, the worldwide web has created a platform wherein fanfiction is allowed and encouraged to spread almost unconditionally, reaching new populations and rising slowly but surely into the public eye. As the internet has made fanfiction more accessible and public, it has also increased the number of children and young adults involved in the process. And in the unsupervised wilderness of the internet, sexual content is a common feature of fanfiction, with a varying …

The Unanticipated Benefits Of Academic Research, Molly Simis
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
I recently completed my Biology Honors Thesis, which was based on a project that began my freshmen year concerning the population genetics of a beautiful dwarf dogwood species that grows in a unique ice‑vent system in West Virginia. The products of my time in the lab include so much more than my thesis paper and presentation that were the culmination of three summers and five semesters of research. Among other things, my experience in undergraduate research helped direct the trajectory of my career plans and led to the creation of this journal.

Days Of War, Nights Of Love: Love & Politics In The Time Of Cholera, Nicholas Fagundo
Days Of War, Nights Of Love: Love & Politics In The Time Of Cholera, Nicholas Fagundo
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Upon first reading, El amor en los tiempos del cólera may seem to be nothing more than a romantic story of unrequited love, drawing on the tropes of nineteenth century Romantic literature, realist fiction techniques and pastoral imagery. However, the thin, sentimental veneer of the novel masks an unsettling and contradictory message about the very ideals that it seems to endorse.

Lost In Translation: Persons With Limited English Proficiency And Police Interaction In The United States, Anastasia Coppersmith
Lost In Translation: Persons With Limited English Proficiency And Police Interaction In The United States, Anastasia Coppersmith
Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement
This article explores United States jurisprudence of the constitutionality of language rights as it correlates to communications between law enforcement officials and non-English speaking persons in emergency situations. The judicial and legislative bodies provide protections to limited English speaking minorities in the realms of education, healthcare, and when navigating through the United States court system. However, these protections are not extended to include interactions between language-minority citizens and initial police interactions during emergency situations.
