The Indian Information Technology Sector: The New Caste Inequality Frontier, Marilyn Fernandez Jan 2018

The Indian Information Technology Sector: The New Caste Inequality Frontier, Marilyn Fernandez

Sociology

My conversations with IT professionals, and Indians I met in social settings, about the current state of 'caste' in India and in Indian IT sector often went like this:1 'Why are we talking about caste in this modern age? Aren't we perpetuating caste distinctions by continuing to talk about it? Isn't it time to get rid of reservations as IT has done? Look at the progress the IT sector has brought to the country! It is "merit, pure merit" that matters, and not caste or any other background'. Such were the assessments, often angry and even dismissive, of many …

Community Health Worker Interventions To Promote Psychosocial Outcomes Among People Living With Hiv—A Systematic Review, H Han, K Kim, Jeanne Murphy, J Cudjoe, P Wilson, P Sharps, J Farley

Nursing Faculty Publications

Background

Community health worker (CHW) interventions are a successful strategy to promote health among HIV-negative and persons living with HIV (PLWH). Psychosocial factors are critical dimensions of HIV/AIDS care contributing to prognosis of the disease, yet it is unclear how CHW interventions improve psychosocial outcomes in PLWH. The purpose of this study was to critically appraise the types, scope, and nature of CHW interventions designed to address psychosocial outcomes in PLWH.

Methods

We performed database searches—PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane—to identify randomized controlled trials published in English before April 2017. Fourteen articles met the eligibility criteria.

Fake Realities: Assassination And Race In Popular Culture, Kevin Marinella

Master’s Theses and Projects

Since the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks the United States had been involved in conflicts across the globe. These conflict have given rise to the use of target killing, commonly known as assassination as a way to eliminate enemies of the United States. A majority of those killed are of Middle-Eastern descent and/or are followers of Islam. Elements of American popular culture since 9/11 have portrayed assassination, with the antagonists generally being of Middle-Eastern or Muslim descent while the protagonist being a white American or from a country allied with the United States who is involved in the conflict. Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "For over a decade, the maleness of the priesthood kept me away from the Catholic Church. By the time I was a junior in college, my feminism was in full swing, and the ordination of women had become my litmus test for whether or not I could be part of a particular church or denomination."

Knowledge, Hope, And Fallibilism, Matthew A. Benton Jan 2018

Knowledge, Hope, And Fallibilism, Matthew A. Benton

SPU Works

Hope, in its propositional construction "I hope that p," is compatible with a stated chance for the speaker that not-p. On fallibilist construals of knowledge, knowledge is compatible with a chance of being wrong, such that one can know that p even though there is an epistemic chance for one that not-p. But self-ascriptions of propositional hope that p seem to be incompatible, in some sense, with self-ascriptions of knowing whether p. Data from conjoining hope self-ascription with outright assertions, with first- and third-person knowledge ascriptions, and with factive predicates suggest a problem: when …

Work Of A Nation: Christian Funerary Ecumenism And Institutional Disruption In Swaziland, Casey Golomski Jan 2018

Work Of A Nation: Christian Funerary Ecumenism And Institutional Disruption In Swaziland, Casey Golomski

Anthropology

This article traces how contemporary funerary practices—foodways, prayer and burial cooperative participation—configure a Christian public culture in Swaziland that draws from ordinary citizens’ religious, ritual and political work and membership in diverse Christian churches. This kind of grassroots ecumenism importantly challenges the potency of orthodox institutional ecumenical projects of religious elites in the Kingdom. These projects include attempts to legislate Christianity as an official religion and the building of a national interdenominational church, both of which have failed to materialize. Exploring this emergent tension between religious institutions’ ideological goals versus communities’ practical engagement on pressing social problems invites a rethinking …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background: Vaccinehasbeenoneofthemostsuccessfulpublichealthinterventionstodate. However, vaccines are pharmaceutical products that carry risks so that many adverse events (AEs) are reported after receiving vaccines. Traditional adverse event reporting systems suffer from several crucial challenges including poor timeliness. This motivates increasing social media-based detection systems, which demonstrate successful capability to capture timely and prevalent disease information. Despite these advantages, social media-based AE detection suffers from serious challenges such as labor-intensive labeling and class imbalance of the training data.

Results: Totacklebothchallengesfromtraditionalreportingsystemsandsocialmedia, weexploittheircomplementary strength and develop a combinatorial classification approach by integrating Twitter data and the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) information aiming to identify potential AEs after …

Vegetarian Diet And Cardiometabolic Risk Among Asian Indians In The United States, Ranjita Misra, Padmini Balagopal, Sudha Raj, Thakor G. Patel

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Research studies have shown that plant-based diets confer cardiovascular and metabolic health benefits. Asian Indians (AIs) in the US (who have often followed plant-based diets) have elevated risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and obesity suggesting ethnic vulnerability that imply genetic and/or lifestyle causative links. This study explored the association between this ethnic group and diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome after controlling for demographics, acculturation, family history of diabetes, and lifestyle and clinical risk factors. The sample comprised of 1038 randomly selected adult AIs in seven US sites. Prevalence and metabolic syndrome was estimated, and obesity was …

E-Boys And E-Girls: Constructing And Performing Identity In League Of Legends, Yelim Lee

Honors Thesis Collection

Conducted over the course of a year and 6 months, E-boys and E-girls is an ethnography of online communities, particularly the League of Legends gaming communities. League of Legends is a highly competitive and team-work orientated game that forces people from around the world to communicate with each other. As players want to find others to game with consistently, online communities have formed out of necessity. Through interactions with the men and women, e-boys and e-girls, on one such community, I have come to observe persisting and rigid norms regarding gender performance and interaction. Even though people have the ability …

Keats, The "Tongueless Nightingale," And The Legacy Of Philomela In English Poetry, Windsor Rose Whitlock Jan 2018

Keats, The "Tongueless Nightingale," And The Legacy Of Philomela In English Poetry, Windsor Rose Whitlock

Honors Thesis Collection

In his groundbreaking essay, “The Hoodwinking of Madeline,” Jack Stillinger first posited a darker reading of Keats’ The Eve of St. Agnes, arguing that Keats’ mention in the poem of a “tongueless nightingale” is a calculated allusion to the story of Philomela from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Since Stillinger published his essay in 1961, not much else has been written on the subject, with the exception of Beverly Fields’ 1983 article, “Keats and the Tongueless Nightingale: Some Unheard Melodies in ‘The Eve of St. Agnes.’ ” In this essay, Fields suggests that Keats killed off the “tongueless nightingale” at the conclusion …

The Tongues Of Eve: The Politics Of Language In Postcolonial Algerian Literature, Molly Hoyer Jan 2018

The Tongues Of Eve: The Politics Of Language In Postcolonial Algerian Literature, Molly Hoyer

Honors Thesis Collection

Conflict in North Africa is often represented through a binary opposition between French and Arabic. Over the course of the almost 200 years since French colonization began in the region, these two languages have come to signify countless, contradictory elements of Algerian identity, history, and culture. This presentation will explore these language dynamics within the context of late 20th-century Algeria by analyzing two novels: So Vast the Prison by Assia Djebar and Memory in the Flesh by Ahlam Mosteghanemi. While each author wrote in a different language—Djebar in French and Mosteghanemi in Arabic—both manipulate narrative structure and style to explore …

Muslim Roots Of America, Hassan Syed Ali Jan 2018

Muslim Roots Of America, Hassan Syed Ali

Integrated Studies

Given the present day wave of nationalism and culturalism, it has become necessary to address the issue of Islam and Muslims in present day America. The Muslim bans, the chants of "go back where you came from" have pushed this issue in to main stream. I have always said that racism existed in America before 9-11 but it came your moral and patriotic duty. Mainstream media and academia has been complacent in the narrative and the story of discovery of America. This paper is an attempt to bring forth evidence of a different past and who truly came to America …

The Relationship Between Instruction Specificity And Resistiveness To Care During Activities Of Daily Living In Persons With Dementia, Jeffrey Buchanan, Britta Dejager, Sandra Garcia, Daniel Houlihan, Carolina Sears, Kathleen Fairchild, Adam Sattler Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Instruction Specificity And Resistiveness To Care During Activities Of Daily Living In Persons With Dementia, Jeffrey Buchanan, Britta Dejager, Sandra Garcia, Daniel Houlihan, Carolina Sears, Kathleen Fairchild, Adam Sattler

Psychology Department Publications

It is common for persons with dementia to display resistant behaviors during activities of daily living (ADLs) and caregiver communication skills can influence the likelihood of these behaviors. Previous research suggests that the type of instructions issued by caregivers is related to rates of compliance during ADLs in persons with dementia. It is unclear, however, if these instruction types affect the likelihood resistiveness to care (RTC) during ADLs. The purpose of the current study was to examine how the use of different types of instructions relate to instances of RTC during ADLs. Results indicated that vague and ambiguous instructions (i.e., …
