The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf
The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf
The Qualitative Report
The authors conduct an exposé on the deterministic denunciations of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) and how citation errors keep these criticisms alive. They use a zombie metaphor to describe more than two decades of battling these seemingly mindless assessments of QDAS that keep coming –despite their decay – and simply will not die. Focusing exclusively on the criticism of separation/distancing, which alleges that the computer and the software interfere with the researcher’s familiarity with the data, the authors trace one current strand of this criticism through a literature genealogy. Three citation errors (half-truth, proxy, and hearsay) are identified to …

Debates over the promising change Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) might offer to traditional online learning now produce significant attention and discourse among the media and higher education. Ample articles discuss the potential benefits of MOOCs from the perspectives of faculty and administration. However, little is known about students’ perceptions of MOOCs. Given the lack of relevant literature and the reality that MOOCs are created to benefit students, it is important to elicit current college students’ perceptions of MOOCs since it is well documented learning mathematics online has its problems (Ashby, Sadera, & McNary, 2011; Frame, 2012; Ho et al., …
Foreign Language Anxiety, Sexuality, And Gender: Lived Experiences Of Four Lgbtq+ Students, James Donald Mitchell
Foreign Language Anxiety, Sexuality, And Gender: Lived Experiences Of Four Lgbtq+ Students, James Donald Mitchell
Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between foreign language anxiety and gender identity has been largely a quantitative endeavor that has shown contradictory results. Furthermore, sexual identity has not been researched in foreign language anxiety literature. A qualitative account of LGBTQ+ language learners with different gender identities has been absent from the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between foreign language anxiety and sexual and gender identity. To gain insight into this relationship, this qualitative study investigated the lived experiences of four LGBTQ+ foreign language university students who represented three gender identities. Data were collected through multiple, in-depth …

Is it possible to reduce the achievement gap simply by implementing effective instructional practices? Francis Scott Key Middle School in Montgomery County Maryland has learned that building the cultural proficiency of teachers goes beyond classroom practices. The school’s Student Voice Project has transformed ideas about instruction by empowering students’ voices and investing in the infinite power of students’ actions.

Using A Shared Vocabulary To Teach Key Qualities Of Good Writing In A Fourth Grade Classroom, Kristi Schoppe
Using A Shared Vocabulary To Teach Key Qualities Of Good Writing In A Fourth Grade Classroom, Kristi Schoppe
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to investigate what happens when teachers replace traditional grammar instruction methods with small group guided instruction focused on a set of vocabulary terms used in writing. The vocabulary terms represent the key qualities of writing; the terms for teachers and students is word choice, ideas, conventions, organization, voice, sentence fluency, role, audience, format, and topic. This study aims to learn more about this topic by investigating how using a shared vocabulary during writing instruction in a fourth grade classroom will engage students longer to improve their writing through the writing process.

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The terms interactional competence and learning are discussed in the context of recent research in the areas of cognitive science and ethnomethodological conversation analysis studies of language learning. Two data excerpts from a longitudinal case study of a beginning learner of English are presented to illustrate (1) the difficulty of representing language learning using structural linguistic representations and (2) evidence of language learning as at-that-time appropriate embodied interaction.

Terrace House Versus The Real World: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Participants’ Approaches To Conflict In Japanese And American Reality Television Programs, Graham A. Smith
University Honors Theses
This paper engages in a cross-cultural discourse analysis of two reality television programs: the Japanese program Terrace House and the American program The Real World. The main goal of the analysis was to understand the conflict styles of the participants in each program, and explore the differences and/or similarities between them. Generally, the programs differed significantly in their portrayals of conflict with the Japanese program demonstrating that participants tended to attempt to maintain harmony among the group, and the American program demonstrating that participants focused more on individual concerns in conflict situations. Terrace House emphasized the resolution and management …
From Brotherhood And Unity To Fratricide: Propaganda In Former Yugoslavia, Jelena H. Grove
From Brotherhood And Unity To Fratricide: Propaganda In Former Yugoslavia, Jelena H. Grove
University Honors Theses
The dissolution of Yugoslavia has become a textbook example of the power of propaganda in times of war. The former president of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, is famed for "stirring the pot" in Yugoslavia and is in many accounts uniquely antagonized for his role, while that of his counterpart, Franjo Tudjman of Croatia, is often overlooked. This thesis will give an overview of both sides' propaganda tactics (monopolistic control, historical revisionism, and appeals to emotions/anxiety) during roughly the years 1987-1992, which will cover their rises to power (1987-1990) and the beginning of the Wars of Yugoslav Succession (1991-1992). The aim of …

Reform In The European Union: The Need For Tighter Integration, Adriana Acuna
University Honors Theses
This report seeks to inquire about the European Union, EU, and its need to employ a higher degree of integration in light of recent events. As of late the EU has faced a series of crises of which their policies are unfamiliar in handling them properly. Albeit the issues are numerous and the dimensions concerning them vary, this report will focus on three: the mass migration of refugees most notably from Syria, the recent United Kingdom referendum which resulted in a majority vote for seceding from the EU, and the need to renovate its current foreign and security policies. This …

"Our Inside Story Is Something Entirely Different" : Cultural Illegibility, Layered Time, And Untranslated Gestures In Fae Myenne Ng’S Bone, Alexa Climaldi
University Honors Theses
This paper analyzes the ways in which Fae Myenne Ng's 1993 novel Bone utilizes fragmentation, atemporality, and untranslated gestures as a means to challenge the assumption that language and storytelling are unmediated methods in understanding a culturally legible Asian American experience. This paper argues against the practice of reading minority literature as an aestheticization of an experience and instead emphasizes that Bone forces readers to contextualize the historical framework through which it operates by not making itself culturally legible.
Cal Poly’S Role In Globalization, Ava Fry
Cal Poly’S Role In Globalization, Ava Fry
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper discusses the effects of an uneasy position for America in the 1980s business markets on the university’s decision to internationalize the curriculum, specifically the responses of Cal Poly’s administration and its student body. The rhetoric used for the proposal of an International Education Office in 1988 by the Academic Senate, revealed an unexpected motivation behind its creation that intrigued me to look further. It seemed that the education system was rapidly globalizing in schools across the nation. A dramatic increase of studies on programs abroad support this claim, however, research failed to show the same international action at …

Is There A Problem When Transferring Tacit Knowledge By Email Within Distributed Groups In An Organisation?, Abosede Adegbola
Level 3
This article is a work-in-progress report of a study that plans to explore the transfer of tacit knowledge electronically within distributed groups, i.e. groups of geographically dispersed organisational members who carry out the majority of their activities through information technology. With many organisations becoming international and global, there is an increasing need for Distributed Groups (DGs) and individuals to communicate with each other within those groups. Technology allows people and teams to work together at different locations and also allows the transfer of Tacit Knowledge (TK) within DGs in an organisation. The study will specifically investigate (a) possible problems that …

“If I Were You”: Tego Calderón’S Diasporic Interventions, Petra R. Rivera-Rideau
“If I Were You”: Tego Calderón’S Diasporic Interventions, Petra R. Rivera-Rideau
Faculty Research and Scholarship
In 2012, reggaeton artist Tego Calderón released a music video for his song “Robin Hood.” The video tells the story of a man who aids a group of undocumented Dominican immigrants to Puerto Rico. Through a close reading of “Robin Hood,” this essay argues that Calderón establishes connections between Puerto Ricans and Dominicans through an understanding of their shared marginalization as black subjects. This has important implications for African diaspora theory, which has typically neglected Puerto Rican and Dominican engagements with blackness. Calderón disrupts two common assumptions about Puerto Rican and Dominican racial politics: first, that Puerto Ricans and Dominicans …
The Central Claiming Renaissance, Andres Sawicki
The Central Claiming Renaissance, Andres Sawicki
Cornell Law Review
The Supreme Court has recently reinvigorated the law of patentable subject matter. But beneath the headlines proclaiming the return of limits to patent eligibility, a more profound shift has taken place: central claiming is reborn.
The Court's eligibility cases are significant outliers compared to today's run-of-the-mill patent law because claim language plays little role in their analyses. In our modern peripheral claiming system, the claim language is the nearexclusive guide to the patent's boundaries. But in its earliest days, our patent system pursued a central claiming approach, in which the inventor's actual work determined the patent's scope. The Court's eligibility …
The Ecclesiological Function Of A Critic: Exploring The Ecclesiological Contributions Of Søren Kierkegaard In His ‘Attack’ On “Christendom”, Anthony Mako
Seminary Masters Theses
Traditionally, Søren Kierkegaard has not been associated with the field of ecclesiology. Some simply do not see any ecclesiological merits to Kierkegaard’s perspective, while others, who perhaps acknowledge Kierkegaard’s connection to ecclesiology, view it as having a negating function. Additionally, growing disenfranchisement with the church has caused a renewed interest in Kierkegaard’s ‘attack’; however, this renewed interest often fails to account for the context into which Kierkegaard wrote. This paper will explore Kierkegaard’s ‘attack’ on “Christendom” in context. It also engages the perspectives of Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who show ecclesial implications for Kierkegaard’s ‘attack’ in both agreement and …
Student-Centered Pedagogy In The Chinese Classroom: Let’S Talk About Sexual Empowerment, Kay Siebler
Student-Centered Pedagogy In The Chinese Classroom: Let’S Talk About Sexual Empowerment, Kay Siebler
English Faculty Publications
This paper looks at the politics of teaching sexuality education, healthy and comprehensive focusing on issues specific to female sexuality, in the context of a Chinese university ELL classroom. Through feminist pedagogical approaches and feminist beliefs in healthy sexuality, this article explores how a university ELL classroom was transformed. As with their U.S. peers, many Chinese young people rely on unhealthy and inaccurate information about human sexuality through pornography or dubious internet searches. Through feminist pedagogical approaches that focus on student-centered learning, critical thinking, and open debate, teachers can integrate controversial topics into a classroom setting to benefit the health …
Identifying Reasons For Attrition At The Clemente Course In The Humanities, Worcester, Ma, Mollie Rayner-Haselkorn
Identifying Reasons For Attrition At The Clemente Course In The Humanities, Worcester, Ma, Mollie Rayner-Haselkorn
Sustainability and Social Justice
This paper identifies reasons for attrition and possible solutions to higher retention at the Clemente Course in the Humanities, Worcester (Clemente). Over the last four years, since the re-launch of the Clemente, the retention rate of students completing the program has remained around 50%. Clemente is an alternative, adult education program that provides college level humanities classes to majority low-income, minority adults. In this paper qualitative research methods are used to interview students, professors and an administrator at Clemente. Based upon qualitative research, supported by retention theory, three main reasons for attrition are identified: student academic self-esteem, diversity of student …
Why Zipf's Law: A Symmetry-Based Explanation, Daniel Cervantes, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Zipf's Law: A Symmetry-Based Explanation, Daniel Cervantes, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we have probability distributions for which, for large values of the corresponding quantity x, the probability density has the form ρ(x) ~ x−αfor some α > 0. While, in principle, we have laws corresponding to different α, most frequently, we encounter situations -- first described by Zipf for linguistics -- when α is close to 1. The fact that Zipf's has appeared frequently in many different situations seems to indicate that there must be some fundamental reason behind this law. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation.
