Advancing Digital Equity In Public Libraries: Assessing Library Patrons’ Problem Solving In Technology Rich Environments, Gloria Jacobs
Advancing Digital Equity In Public Libraries: Assessing Library Patrons’ Problem Solving In Technology Rich Environments, Gloria Jacobs
Presentations and Publications
This mixed methods research examined the digital problem solving processes of vulnerable adults within the community setting of a public library. Data were collected from approximately 450 library users who completed a library survey, a subset who completed PIAACs Problem Solving in Technology Rich Environments (PSTRE) assessment, and a smaller subset who participated in an observation protocol. Quantitative analysis revealed that library website use was a strong predictor of PSTRE scores. Qualitative analysis showed that digital problem solving needs to be seen as a set of contexts and events that are dynamic across different situations. In order to respond to …
Supporting Digital Problem Solving, Tyler Frank
Supporting Digital Problem Solving, Tyler Frank
Presentations and Publications
This presentation draws from findings based on a three-year research project with the goal of achieving greater digital equity for adult learners in libraries. This project addresses digital problem solving, a unique task adults face in today’s age of ubiquitous technology use. Marginalized and under-resourced digital users face challenges of access not only to high-speed Internet but also to getting the support they need for their digital learning and problem solving. Libraries are uniquely positioned to support these learners. However, this calls for techniques and tools to assist digital users in accomplishing their goals as they continue to develop their …

This doctoral workshop has as an aim to offer an opportunity to explore and share research and the theoretical underpinnings facing PhD researchers within the construction and engineering sectors where the …
Social Identity Theory And Public Opinion Towards Immigration, Maurice Mangum, Ray Block Jr.
Social Identity Theory And Public Opinion Towards Immigration, Maurice Mangum, Ray Block Jr.
Political Science Faculty Publications
Several scholars have called upon social identity theory to investigate the relationship between an American national identity and American public opinion on immigration. Lacking a uniform measure of American identity, by and large, scholars find that a two-dimensional conception of American identity influences these opinions. Our review suggests that the extant measures of American identity do not fully account for the various aspects of social identity theory. We capture more fully the different components of social identity theory. By doing so, we find that American identity has five dimensions. Therefore, in this analysis, we advance a more comprehensive measure of …
Using Multilingual Literature To Enhance Multilingual Students’ Experiences In Second Language Writing Classes: An Innovative Classroom Practice, Ekaterina Arshavskaya
Using Multilingual Literature To Enhance Multilingual Students’ Experiences In Second Language Writing Classes: An Innovative Classroom Practice, Ekaterina Arshavskaya
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Research on second language writing instruction consistently shows low levels of student engagement (Lee, 2012) in writing classes. In order to address this challenge, researchers have argued for the need to introduce various forms of expressive writing (Bilton & Sivasubramaniam, 2009), including student interpretive practice with texts (Kramsch, 1997).
Another common problem associated with second language writing instruction is lack of connection between writing and reading activities. Prominent language educators have long recognized the benefits of connecting reading and writing activities with English learners (Krashen, 1992). According to Krashen (1992), we learn to write through reading. To resolve these multiple …

Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso
Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
From the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century PhilippineMoros increasingly wrote the Spanish language in Arabic script knownas Philippine Jawi. This cultural phenomenon, which went beyond merecode switching, is illustrated through documents found in the NationalArchives of the Philippines, particularly protocols involving the Tausug andMaguindanao sultanates. The use of Spanish in Jawi documents increased, thanks to Zamboanga’s role as a cultural center in the south and Manila’sability to attract sultans politically. Jawi was also used as the scriptin language primers through the strategic work of the Jesuit JacintoJuanmartí, who originated Moro philology.KEYWORDS: ALJAMIADO • SPANISH • JAWI • MORO PHILOLOGY • …

Georgia has a growing refugee community (Division of Family and Children Services, n.d.). Successful refugee resettlement and K-12 education is dependent on school personnel understanding the emotional wellness and challenges of this population. Advocating on behalf of this population, this presentation will address the state of refugees in Georgia. Information and discussion will address the various emotional roadblocks experienced by refugees that can be an impediment to successful integration in K-12 schools. Presenters will also provide participants with available resources to address these challenges.

Language As Communication Vs. Language As Art: J.R.R. Tolkien And Early 20th-Century Radical Linguistic Experimentation, Dimitra Fimi
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article situates Tolkien’s “A Secret Vice” (and its accompanying notes and papers) within the cultural and intellectual milieu of the early 20th century. It claims that at the heart of Tolkien’s exploration in this material is the question of language as communication vs. language as art. It argues that Tolkien’s language invention navigates the (perceived) binary between a utilitarian aim for language invention (contemporary International Auxiliary Languages) vs. an aesthetic linguistic pursuit (contemporary Modernist and other avant-garde linguistic experimentation), by choosing a third (middle) way. It examines Tolkien's linguistic invention alongside the work of Sapir, Jespersen, Joyce, Stein, and …

It’s tough to learn in an environment that doesn’t feel safe and supportive—not just physically safe, but also academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally safe! Let’s look at school climate through each of lenses and see how we can make our learning environments engaging and inviting, even for defeated, defiant, and discouraged kids, including those who may have had negative, contentious, and failure-oriented experiences in the past. For all grade levels and subject areas.
A Comparison Of Constitutionalism In France And The United States, Martin A. Rogoff
A Comparison Of Constitutionalism In France And The United States, Martin A. Rogoff
Maine Law Review
In the American legal system, the Constitution is the fundamental legal document. All law, and in fact any exercise of public power in any form, is evaluated for validity by constitutional standards. The Constitution deals with such crucially important matters as the structure and operation of government and the fundamental rights of the governed. The Constitution is also the most important symbol of American national life and the perceived repository of the most cherished values of the American people. In France, in marked contrast, a comprehensive code of private law, the Code civil, has for a long time occupied a …

Framing Race And Blame In The Media: A Case Study On The Chapel Hill Shooting, Sara Abdullatif Galadari
Framing Race And Blame In The Media: A Case Study On The Chapel Hill Shooting, Sara Abdullatif Galadari
Dissertations and Theses
This research examines how racism is hidden and denied by the press, and how blame is attributed to individuals in crime news stories. This research heavily relies of van Dijk's (2015) six discursive strategies to reveal how racism is hidden and denied in the press: positive self-presentation, denial and counter-attack, moral blackmail, subtle denials, mitigation, and defense and offense. Specifically, the Chapel Hill shooting is used as an example of a crime news story for my case study. This study will use framing as the primary method, and critical discourse analysis will be used to guide my interpretations of the …
The Interactional And Cultural Pragmatics Of Evidentiality In Pastaza Quichua, Janis B. Nuckolls
The Interactional And Cultural Pragmatics Of Evidentiality In Pastaza Quichua, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
This paper analyses the interactional and pragmatic effects of two evidential enclitics in the Pastaza Quichua language of Amazonian Ecuador. Attention is also given to represented discourse in a variety of genres. The overall goal is a better understanding of the perspectival encoding of experience through evidential enclitics and represented discourse, and the role of these devices in articulating concepts of sociability and politeness principles. A broader aim is to clarify how discourse practices making use of evidentiality and represented discourse may clarify Quichua peoples’ understandings of their relationships with each other and with non-human nature. Finally, this paper points …

Healthy Transitions: Peer Leadership Among Youth With Behavioral Health Issues, Vickie Harden Dr., V. Nikki Jones Dr.
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
Behavioral health issues among youth and young adults are often misunderstood by the youth, and well as adults in the youth's life. Healthy Transitions provides a model for promoting youth-driven services, and leadership opportunities. These opportunities help shape recovery practices for youth with behavioral health issues, including mental illness, addiction, and co-occurring disorders. This provides a peer voice by which practitioners can better understand the impact of mental illness and addiction on youth, and initiate practice strategies that attune to the unique cultural identity of youth. The intended audience is anyone working with youth and young adults.

Translating Trademarks: Towards The Equal Treatment Of Foreign- Language Marks, Ung Shen Goh
Translating Trademarks: Towards The Equal Treatment Of Foreign- Language Marks, Ung Shen Goh
PhD Dissertations
Part A of this dissertation tells the story of The Coca-Cola Companys trademark registrations in Canada in order to illustrate the linguistic issues faced by trademark administrators. A trademarks registrability depends on its distinctiveness, which is its ability to can distinguish its traders goods and services from those of another trader. Knowing how well a trademark will function to distinguish means ascertaining first what has already been registered, which is no easy task when the databases cannot administer foreign-language marks that are not Romanized. Part A proposes the solution of transcribing foreign-language marks that are not Romanized, so they can …

No Place To Call Home: The Iraqi Kurds Under The Ba’Ath, Saddam Hussein, And Isis, Craig Douglas Albert Ph.D.
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The Kurds are the world’s largest ethnonational group without their own state. They have often been the target of ethnic strife and discrimination. Even within their semi-autonomous territory, Iraqi Kurds have faced humiliation and oppression. This essay argues that the Kurds in Iraq have been deprived of their property and dignity and hence have been subjected to “dignity takings.” This occurred in three distinct phases: the 1970s under “Ba’athification,” the 1980s under Saddam Hussein, and at present under the Islamic State (ISIS). During each phase, the Kurds have suffered involuntary property loss through forced relocations and the destruction of homes …
Beyond Trademark: The Washington Redskins Case And The Search For Dignity, Victoria F. Phillips
Beyond Trademark: The Washington Redskins Case And The Search For Dignity, Victoria F. Phillips
Chicago-Kent Law Review
In her pioneering book, We Want What’s Ours: Learning from South Africa’s Land Restitution Program, Professor Bernadette Atuahene employs a detailed ethnographic study of South Africa’s land restitution program to develop the concept of a dignity taking. This article extends the application of Atuahene’s theory to the taking of intangible property arguing that the misappropriation of cultural identity and imagery for use as a federal trademark can also constitute a dignity taking in certain cases. Perhaps no effort has received more public attention than the longstanding battle over the Washington NFL football team’s name and its federally registered “Redskins” …

Reflecting On The Future Of Qda Software: Special Issue Of The Qualitative Report, Trena Paulus, Jeanine C. Evers, Franciska De Jong
The Qualitative Report
This article introduces the special issue of The Qualitative Report, which brings together five papers exploring the scope, depth, history and future of Qualitative Data Analysis software (QDAS), originally presented at a conference in Rotterdam in 2016. The selected papers provide insights into the history of the QDAS community and future developments of the software packages, uses of QDAS for tasks beyond text analysis, the promise of a common exchange format for researchers using different packages, and strategies for putting to rest, once and for all, persistent misconceptions about QDAS that continue to circulate in the literature and during …
Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen
Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen
The Qualitative Report
The variety of specialized tools designed to facilitate analysis of audio-visual (AV) media are useful not only to media scholars and oral historians but to other researchers as well. Both Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) packages and dedicated systems created for specific disciplines, such as linguistics, can be used for this purpose. Software proliferation challenges researchers to make informed choices about which package will be most useful for their project. This paper aims to present an information science perspective of the scholarly use of tools in qualitative research of audio-visual sources. It provides a baseline of affordances based on functionalities …
