The Promise And Pitfalls Of Neuroeducation As A Grounding For Instructional Practice, Stephanie Murphy Apr 2018

The Promise And Pitfalls Of Neuroeducation As A Grounding For Instructional Practice, Stephanie Murphy

CUP Faculty Research

This narrative inquiry study explored how five educators from a language-based neuroeducation program apply and assess neuroeducation-grounded approaches in the classroom, and investigated their perceptions of the challenges and merits of neuroeducation implementation. It synthesized research from the domains of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and language theory, and applied Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory (NsLLT) as its underpinning. The study found that teachers’ self-efficacy, feelings of isolation coupled with a lack of greater buy-in, and mindset mismatch are barriers to neuroeducation implementation, whereas the ability to meet students’ needs, the established results witnessed by participants, and the opportunity for a paradigm shift …

A Mixed-Method Study Of Kindergarten Through Third-Grade Teachers’ Perceptions Of Homework, Tonya Heavin

Dissertations

This mixed-method research study examined the perceptions of kindergarten through third-grade teachers regarding the use of homework in their classrooms. Electronic surveys were sent to 190 kindergarten through third-grade teachers in seven school districts from five counties in Central Missouri. A total of 47 educators chose to respond to the open- and closed-ended questions. The results of this study showed most of the respondents believed in the benefits of homework for academic achievement. The quality and quantity of assigned homework were important characteristics for educators from both large and small school districts. The lack of parental support was considered one …

Socioeconomic Predictors Of Recognition And Recall Memory In Infants, Ashley Greaves , '18 Apr 2018

Socioeconomic Predictors Of Recognition And Recall Memory In Infants, Ashley Greaves , '18

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Relationships between socioeconomic status and recognition and recall memory were explored in a sample of72 infants at 6-,9-, and 12-months-ofage. Socioeconomic status was disentangled into household annual income, parental education, and parental subjective social status to test their individual associations with recognition and recall memory function. Findings suggest differential effects on recognition memory in 6 month olds, and recall memory in 12 month olds, based on income, education, and subjective social status. Discussion points to a larger sample size with an older age group as next steps in the analyses.

Mutating Marks: Refusing To Lose The Trademark Trail, Robert W. Emerson, Katharine C. Collins Apr 2018

Mutating Marks: Refusing To Lose The Trademark Trail, Robert W. Emerson, Katharine C. Collins

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

This article examines and synthesizes several criticisms underlying the expansion of trademark rights, and the sometimes irrational results thereof. The abandonment of trademark law’s foundations, in particular categories of marks, is illustrated most saliently where marks have been allowed to encapsulate meaning and value in and of themselves, unattributable to any qualities or connections to product or source. This touches on, and bridges the gap, between areas which have received academic attention for their problematic evolutions, including naked licensing, strike suits, cultural and particularly sports-centric marks, and sensory marks. Trademark doctrines such as the consumer perception for confusion, and the …

Teaching Middle School Children Affected By Homelessness: An Interpretive Phenomenological Investigation Of Teachers’ Lived Experiences, Timothy B. Smart

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The human experience occupies the central role in phenomenological research. In this interpretive phenomenological study, the researcher recruited and interviewed secondary school teachers from three public urban schools in the Pacific Northwest in order to have them describe their lived experiences that relate to instructing students affected by homelessness. The researcher used two semi-structured, conversational interviews with six participants who reflected on how their classroom experiences influenced their teaching, engagement strategies, emotional states, and student relationships. The conceptual framework for this study included: Homelessness in America, public school setting, impact of homelessness, and teacher perspective. In this study, the researcher …

This descriptive case study focused on a single high school community which is intentional in its efforts to craft a school culture, fostering belonging and safety in students who are Gender and Sexual Diverse (GSD). The researcher examined the perspectives of classroom-based and non-classroom-based educators, as they strove to articulate how they address the needs of this student-population without negatively impacting academic and other school priorities, and how they incorporate understandings regarding this population into their practice. Through a multi-phase process including interviews, observations, focus group, and document analysis, the researcher explored how seven educator-participants navigate changing demographics both personally …

Ontology Based Technical Skill Similarity, Yeshwanth Bashyam Balachander Apr 2018

Ontology Based Technical Skill Similarity, Yeshwanth Bashyam Balachander

Master's Projects

Online job boards have become a major platform for technical talent procurement and job search. These job portals have given rise to challenging matching and search problems. The core matching or search happens between technical skills of the job requirements and the candidate's profile or keywords. The extensive list of technical skills and its polyonymous nature makes it less effective to perform a direct keyword matching. This results in substandard job matching or search results which misses out a closely matching candidate on account of it not having the exact skills. It is important to use a semantic similarity measure …

Automated Lyrical Narrative Writing, Divya Singh

Master's Projects

Computational Creativity studies the potential of computers to act as autonomous creators and co-creators in addition to tools helping people. Creativity is evident in music, visual art, problem solving and languages. Significant work has been conducted in the area of linguistic creation mainly in the generation of stories, puns, rhymes, jokes, similes, and poetry. One of the major challenges of computational creativity is to generate lyrics that exhibit human-level creativity. On one hand, the lyrics generated should be meaningful and coherent, while on the other hand, they should satisfy poetry constraints such as rhyme scheme, rhyme type, and the number …

The Importance Of Language In Cross-Cultural Interaction, Lacy Norton Apr 2018

The Importance Of Language In Cross-Cultural Interaction, Lacy Norton

Senior Honors Theses

Language and culture are connected. Because of this connection, people have a preferred language with which they have an emotional or cultural connection. In Latin American cultures, it is beneficial to speak to a person in their preferred language. Using a person’s preferred language as opposed to any other language will facilitate a deeper connection with that person, cross cultural barriers that may separate them, and be more effective when attempting to share the gospel.

Lewis In The Rye: An Approach To Controversial Literature, Abigail Griffiths Apr 2018

Lewis In The Rye: An Approach To Controversial Literature, Abigail Griffiths

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis aims to coalesce literary criticism with Christian theology to provide a guideline for how Christians, who uphold a certain moral logic, should interact with literature that sparks controversy among readers. An analysis of J.D. Salinger’s novel Catcher in the Rye (1951) will be considered through the lens of C.S. Lewis’ commentary on good reading, good critique, and good art. Catcher in the Rye, an American novel, contains elements of derogatory language, promiscuous scenes, and insinuations of nihilism. How would C.S. Lewis, a British novelist and a prominent figure in Christian thought, read Salinger’s work: would he find …
