Qohelet And Camus: Answering The Absurd, Christian A. Sanchez
Qohelet And Camus: Answering The Absurd, Christian A. Sanchez
Global Tides
Albert Camus contributed greatly to the realm of philosophy with the promotion of absurdism—the school of thought hinging on the belief in the “absurd.” Essentially the divorce between man’s desire for meaning and the universe devoid of meaning, the absurd is the dominating theme of his works. Three millennia beforehand in the Hebrew Bible, the rich discourse of Qohelet was recorded as the book of Ecclesiastes. Qohelet, a word simply meaning teacher, concludes that all is “vanity,” or in Hebrew, “hebel.” This central notion of hebel permeates his discourse on the essence of life here on earth. This article …

Stanley Kubrick & The Evolution Of Critical Consensus, Cote Keller
Global Tides
Though his influence as an auteur is often taken for granted, Stanley Kubrick and his work have been subject to intense scrutiny, debate, and re-evaluation since the beginnings of his career. His adaptation of Lolita both undermined the Production Code in place at the time and alienated contemporary critics who argued that it went too far in making a palatable version of the inherently controversial novel. After the demise of the Code, A Clockwork Orange met condemnation from a broad array of groups, including left-wing journalists who regarded it as a reckless, sensationalist celebration of fascism. Like these films, 2001 …

An Investigation Into A Culturally Sensitive Manner Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Julianna Vaught
Senior Honors Theses
How to teach English globally has continued to be a relevant topic of discussion in the field of TESL, especially how to teach in a manner that is sensitive to the various sociocultural and historical factors surrounding the English language, as well as other languages and cultures. Through an examination of the current global status of English, its historical significance, the dilemmas attached to its’ worldwide spread and dominance, and an examination of culture in language teaching, an attempt is made to codify some basic principles of culture-sensitive English teaching, as well as address the Christian position on this matter, …

Optimism And Compliance: An Examination Of Disempowering Processes Within Online Patient Communities, Wendi F. Coleman
Optimism And Compliance: An Examination Of Disempowering Processes Within Online Patient Communities, Wendi F. Coleman
Technical Communication Capstone Course
Patients diagnosed with long-term conditions (LTCs) are now being asked of medical practitioners to take an active role in their own health care as “expert patients.” This trend has accelerated the increase in people with LTCs who are using the internet for both information and social support. A valuable resource to these patients, and of interest to researchers, is a new type of online space: online patient communities (OPCs) created for patients suffering from specific illnesses. In order to better understand potential disempowering processes within OLPs, I follow the research and examine the illness narratives, focusing on their various external …

Imminent Communities: Transpacific Literary Form And Racialization, 1847-1920, Spencer Tricker
Imminent Communities: Transpacific Literary Form And Racialization, 1847-1920, Spencer Tricker
Open Access Dissertations
This study examines literary contestations of an imperial discourse I call Pacific Imminence, a ruse of American exceptionalism that framed U.S. Pacific ascendancy as an impending development inaugurating global economic prosperity and a harmonious community of humankind. Through the continental imaginary of Manifest Destiny, most Americanist scholarship has viewed the Pacific as a peripheral site of empire-building in the long nineteenth century. By contrast, I argue that the Pacific uniquely catalyzed a globalist re-branding of U.S. imperialism that American and East Asian writers resisted through fictional forms. Such works undercut Pacific imminence by narrativizing the persistence of colonial antagonisms. In …
Text Message Intervention For Latino Adults To Improve Diabetes Outcomes In An Urban Free Clinic Setting, Sharon R. Allen
Text Message Intervention For Latino Adults To Improve Diabetes Outcomes In An Urban Free Clinic Setting, Sharon R. Allen
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Introduction: This text message intervention sought to help patients at a free clinic in the Southeastern U.S. that have uncontrolled diabetes (DM) (A1C > or = 7) improve their DM clinical and behavioral outcomes, and thereby help them to live healthier, more hopeful and productive lives as they deal daily with this chronic illness. Eight weeks of educational text messages were sent to help improve DM care and outcomes. Method: Free clinic patient Latino adults with DM (n=25) pre-post one group design. Results: Statistically significant results (p < .05) were seen in three (SKILLD, p=.001, DSES, p = .000, and SDSCA, p = .042) of the four tools/surveys administered. A1C improvements were significant from the pre-intervention (M = 9.10, SD = 1.51) and the trended post-intervention values/results (M=8.26, SD = 1.29, t [21] = 2.79, p = .0110). Discussion: Does personalized communication, education and follow up for patients at the free clinic improve diabetes knowledge, self-efficacy and self-care? This text message intervention shows great promise to improve outcomes for diabetes self-management.

Fashion Patternmaking Book Instructions In Spanish, Yessica N. Prieto
Theses & Dissertations
This study explored participants’ perceptions of the need for a fashion patternmaking book in Spanish to be used by native Spanish-speaking students in U.S. institutions of higher education. There is no previous research demonstrating the need for a patternmaking book in Spanish for native Spanish speakers. This study provided insight into how educators perceive the need for a fashion patternmaking book in Spanish to assist non-English speaking students.
A survey was sent via e-mail using Survey Monkey®. Participants were members of the International Textiles and Apparel Industry and faculty who teach fashion design in Mexico. The responses of 17 participants …

Superando Barreras: Exploring Barriers Mexican-American Women Overcame As They Pursued A Higher Education, Emma Santa Maria
Theses & Dissertations
Academic achievement in school is a promise for a better future and provides stability for a family. With a growing Mexican-American population in the United States, the need for more research on academic achievement for this demographic is evident. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory qualitative research was to explore the perceived barriers 13 Mexican-American women overcame as they pursued a higher education. In addition, the sub-question focused on resources used to overcome perceived barriers. Participants were Mexican-American women who completed their terminal or professional degree between 2010–2015. The research design was exploratory and was conducted via an inductive …
Incorporating Multiple Intelligences Within Instructional Strategies, Hannah Smith
Incorporating Multiple Intelligences Within Instructional Strategies, Hannah Smith
Senior Honors Projects
Teachers know there are many different ways to include students’ intellectual strengths within their daily instruction. Howard Gardner (1983) proposed the idea of multiple intelligences to broaden the scope of an individual’s potential beyond simply an IQ measure. Gardner originally grouped the broad range of human abilities into eight comprehensive categories, or in other words multiple intelligences (MIs) including: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. Multiple intelligences are used to present and assess students’ intellectual abilities in a variety of ways. This paper summarizes my study on how catering towards students’ measured MIs influence their academic engagement. …
Living, Dying, After Death: Achieving A "Good" Death In The Time Of Aids Orphan Care, Ellen Block
Living, Dying, After Death: Achieving A "Good" Death In The Time Of Aids Orphan Care, Ellen Block
Sociology Faculty Publications
AIDS has devastated communities across southern Africa, leaving many children orphaned. Grandmothers are considered ideal caregivers because of cultural expectations of intergenerational care, and because they have not been decimated by AIDS to the same extent as younger adults. However, these grandmothers, who currently carry the majority of the burden of care for AIDS orphans, are themselves aging and dying. I argue here that in Lesotho, the caregiving demanded of grandmothers late into their lives not only alters kin relations for the living, but has increasingly made a “good death” unachievable for elderly caregivers.

Representations Of Black Characters In Children’S Literature: A Product Of Histories, Ideologies, Narratives, Depictions, Politics, And Laws, Annie Calloway
Education Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative, directed content analysis examined fiction and nonfiction children’s literature published between 2015 and 2017. Through the lens of Critical Race Theory, the study describes the ways in which Black characters are represented in early readers. Using books located in community libraries, school media centers and retail outlets, the study concludes that Black characters are represented less frequently and in ways that often do not take into account cultural, political, and legal manifestations of White privilege. This discussion of race, identity, power structures, and education aims to create and promote thought and discussions surrounding the genealogies of racial oppressions. …
Ruth: A Spiritual Role Model For The Religious Women Of Southwest China, Xiaoqiong Chen
Ruth: A Spiritual Role Model For The Religious Women Of Southwest China, Xiaoqiong Chen
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Aware of the need to address the existing challenges of the religious women of southwest China, I find inspiration and guidance in the Book of Ruth. This thesis suggests that the main challenge to women‘s religious life in southwest China is the lack of foundational religious formation and a vital spirituality of religious life. It argues that the character of Ruth embodies the spiritual principles of solidarity, initiative, and integration, and can therefore provide the religious women of southwest China with a model of holistic spirituality which fosters a formational renewal of spiritual and communal life and confirms religious identity. …
Entgrenzung Der Arbeit Durch „Bring Your Own Device“, Leo Roth
Entgrenzung Der Arbeit Durch „Bring Your Own Device“, Leo Roth

Nuestra Escuela: A Quasi-Experimental Study Of The Impact Of Spanish Language Skills Training On The Attitudes And Practices Of Non-Hispanic Teachers Of Hispanic Students, Patricia A. Sutherlan Rock
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The reality of the changing face of America’s public schools is that many teachers are in districts with high numbers of native Spanish speakers in their classrooms, yet very few of those teachers speak or understand Spanish. In lieu of the challenge to attract, hire, or retain a suitable number of Spanish-speaking teachers, professional development training of existing faculty in basic Spanish speaking skills could be considered a viable option when schools desire to create a culturally sensitive community; however, Spanish language skills training for teachers and administrators in districts with high numbers of Latinx students is not as prevalent …

General Education Teachers' Self-Efficacy To Teach Autistic Students In Kindergarten Through Fourth Grade General Education Classrooms, Tanya Michelle Wynn
General Education Teachers' Self-Efficacy To Teach Autistic Students In Kindergarten Through Fourth Grade General Education Classrooms, Tanya Michelle Wynn
Education Dissertations and Projects
Children are being diagnosed with autism at an alarming rate; and as these students enter schools to be educated alongside their peers, general education teachers need to feel prepared to teach them. Many years ago, students with autism were placed in separate classrooms and were not in general education classrooms. As times have changed and autistic students enter into general education classrooms that are taught by general education teachers, this study examined the self-efficacy of those teachers when it comes to educating these students. This research was done in a rural school district, and kindergarten through fourth-grade teachers from three …
Watson’S Theory Of Human Caring: Effect On Nurse Perception Of Care Environment, Shannon Jones
Watson’S Theory Of Human Caring: Effect On Nurse Perception Of Care Environment, Shannon Jones
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Psychiatric and mental health nurses face unique problems related to the specifics of the role including low morale and burnout. These problems stem from many factors including insufficient staffing, lack of support from management, and patient behaviors such as aggression or noncompliance which lead to poor patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine what effect adoption of Dr. Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring has on nurse perception of the care environment on an inpatient psychiatric unit in a rural community hospital as measured by a modified version of the Combined Assessment of Psychiatric Environments (CAPE) instrument. …

Networks Of Isolation: The Case Of Donald J. Trump, Facebook, And The Limits Of Social Movement Theory, Carol L. Stimmel
Networks Of Isolation: The Case Of Donald J. Trump, Facebook, And The Limits Of Social Movement Theory, Carol L. Stimmel
Sustainability and Social Justice
The 2016 election that catapulted Donald J. Trump to the U.S. presidency has raised questions for how Facebook may have enabled the emergence and coalescence of a social movement among traditionally improbable voters. The research in this paper engages with contemporary social movement theory, assessing its adequacy for explaining the role of Facebook as a primary method for facilitating a social movement among the civically-alienated, who are the most unlikely of all Americans to join an organized collective for change. From a methodological perspective, the exploration takes up the case as a strategy of inquiry to explore social movement theory …
Exploring Churn And Alignment Between Retention And Occupational Culture As Perceived By Professional Truck Drivers, Catherine M. Cole
Exploring Churn And Alignment Between Retention And Occupational Culture As Perceived By Professional Truck Drivers, Catherine M. Cole
Dissertations
Despite advances in logistics software and increased driver pay, the trucking industry continues a historic wave of human capital risks in the form of driver turnover and driver shortages. Previous efforts to understand the phenomenon of driver turnover rely heavily on supply chain, transportation, and logistics based disciplines. The current study provides a human capital ontology towards understanding professional truck driver perceptions. Within the interpretive framework of pragmatism, the study applied a simultaneous ethnographic and phenomenological research design to explore the phenomenon of churn and professional truck driver perceptions of environmental alignment between trucking industry retention strategies and the occupational …
A Collaborative Composite Event Detection Approach In Wireless Sensor Network Using Fuzzy Assisted Decision System, S. Nalini, A. Valarmathi
A Collaborative Composite Event Detection Approach In Wireless Sensor Network Using Fuzzy Assisted Decision System, S. Nalini, A. Valarmathi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Recently, inWireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), several energy efficient event detection algorithms have been proposed that aim to minimize battery storage, energy consumption and to maximize the network lifetime by framing reduced fuzzy rules related to spatio-temporal properties for determining the event. Since sensors are prone to intermittent fault it would result to fault susceptible reading that generates false alarm event, which would lead to lack of conforming the event at a higher confidence rate. Hence, during decision making, the confidence level parameter of the sensor node is integrated by considering the spatio-temporal properties. In this paper, we demonstrate through collaborative …
