An Exploratory Study Of Organizational Security Risk Management For Improved Effectiveness, Angela Jackson-Summers
An Exploratory Study Of Organizational Security Risk Management For Improved Effectiveness, Angela Jackson-Summers
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
Information technology executives continue to have concerns about information security (Kappelman, McLean, Johnson, & Torres, 2016) and the increasing rate of information security threats facing organizations (Ponemon Institute, 2017). This exploratory study aimed to take a closer look at the organizational security risk management process for improved effectiveness, and its integral role among other organizational processes. Two research questions were addressed by identifying organizational drivers to security risk management effectiveness, and by determining challenges to achieving organizational security risk management effectiveness. Using the resource-based view theory (RBV), and Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model Integration …
For Whom The Bell (Equitably) Tolls: Erisa Compliance And Denial Of Benefits Notices Circuit Split, Sarah Smith
For Whom The Bell (Equitably) Tolls: Erisa Compliance And Denial Of Benefits Notices Circuit Split, Sarah Smith
Akron Law Review
The circuit courts are split as to how a plan administrator of an ERISA-governed employee benefit plan must notify a claimant of a time limitation placed on a claimant’s ability to seek judicial review of an adverse benefit decision. Some courts indicate that inclusion of this time limitation in the Summary Plan Description is sufficient to notify a claimant. Other courts have held that the time period must specifically be included in adverse determination notices, which are documents notifying claimants of the denial of their claim and the right to judicial review. Much of the debate among courts concerns the …

Harmonizing Cultural Ip Across Borders: Fashionable Bags & Ghanaian Adinkra Symbols, J. Janewa Osei-Tutu
Akron Law Review
Global copyright and trademark laws protect symbols, names, and literary and artistic works. However, when their primary significance is cultural, because they are neither individual original works nor symbols that are used as commercial identifiers, intellectual property laws do not protect these symbols or artistic works. This is true, even if these goods are protected under national laws as part of that nation’s cultural heritage. Once these cultural goods cross borders, there is no international law that will enable the country from which these goods originate to assert its rights in other countries. This Article characterizes these cultural goods as …
Intellectual Property, Traditional Knowledge, And Traditional Cultural Expressions In Native American Tribal Codes, Dalindyebo Bafana Shabalala
Intellectual Property, Traditional Knowledge, And Traditional Cultural Expressions In Native American Tribal Codes, Dalindyebo Bafana Shabalala
Akron Law Review
Indigenous peoples and nations have been making demands for protection and promotion of their intellectual property, traditional knowledge, and traditional cultural expressions in domestic and international fora. The power of the basic demand is one that lies in claims of moral duty and human rights. This Article argues that in order for such claims to have power, one of the necessary elements for success is that the demandeurs themselves need to provide such protection within whatever scope of sovereignty that they exercise. In the context of Native American tribes seeking protection for Native American intellectual property under federal law in …

Mythcon 49 - On The Shoulders Of Giants, The Mythopoeic Society
Mythcon Programs
The Mythopoeic Society has launched into a series of 50th anniversaries: the founding of the Society in 2017, the conception and launch of our scholarly journal Mythlore in 2018, and the establishment of our Mythopoeic Conference in 2019. Our theme is suggested by the ways in which Inklings scholarship has built on such good foundations.
We will celebrate these foundations and fifty years of building "On the Shoulders of Giants" at Mythcon 49.

Writing Fiction During Writing Workshop In First Grade, Maureen Kelly Rowan
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine how first graders respond to and perform within the writing workshop model. The workshop model is used during the writing of fiction pieces. One goal of this study was to determine how the students would respond to choosing their own topics. A second goal of this study was to determine if students would be successful in composing fiction pieces through the use of this model. The third goal of this study was to determine if there would be gender differences within the choice of topic. The findings showed that the students were …

Effects Of A Scripted And Intense Reading Intervention Program On The Reading Comprehension Of Fifth Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Tracy Slater
Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on the use of intensive reading intervention programs in a fifth inclusion classroom setting. This has been a topic that is frequently discussed and how support for the special need students with comprehension deficits can be increased. These students deserve a fair, equal, and individualized learning plan in a classroom that accepts all children. Studies show how successful using intensive reading programs close the reading comprehension gaps with our exceptional students.
The purpose of this study is to show how using the intensive reading intervention program is crucial in the classrooms to support the special needs students. …

Essays On Boundedly Rational Choice., Tanmoy Das Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Decision theory or the theory of choice is the analysis of individual behavior, typically in noninteractive situations. We can conceptualize two types of decision theory - normative and descriptive. A normative theory is concerned with identifying the best decision to make, modeling a decision maker who comports to certain ideals. A descriptive theory is a theory about how decisions are made. Such a theory is concerned with explaining observed behavior or predicting behavior under the assumption that the decision-maker or decision process follows some rules. The predictions about behavior that descriptive theory produces allow further tests of the assumed underlying, …

Ya No Tengo Vecinos: Local Understandings Of Neighborhood Change In Cusco, Peru, Kalyn Mae Finnell
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis involves the San Blas neighborhood in the Historic Center of Cusco, Peru. It aims to better understand local effects of the changes that San Blas has undergone since the 1990s and to explore possibilities related to improving the qualities of life of long-term residents (vecinos) who have lived in San Blas for at least two generations. It has two principal objectives: 1) Make recommendations to present to various public and private entities who have a presence and influence over the San Blas neighborhood to improve the likelihood that vecino demands are heard, 2) Illuminate the ways that vecinos …
Supervised Machine Learning Bot Detection Techniques To Identify Social Twitter Bots, Phillip George Efthimion, Scott Payne, Nicholas Proferes
Supervised Machine Learning Bot Detection Techniques To Identify Social Twitter Bots, Phillip George Efthimion, Scott Payne, Nicholas Proferes
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present novel bot detection algorithms to identify Twitter bot accounts and to determine their prevalence in current online discourse. On social media, bots are ubiquitous. Bot accounts are problematic because they can manipulate information, spread misinformation, and promote unverified information, which can adversely affect public opinion on various topics, such as product sales and political campaigns. Detecting bot activity is complex because many bots are actively trying to avoid detection. We present a novel, complex machine learning algorithm utilizing a range of features including: length of user names, reposting rate, temporal patterns, sentiment expression, followers-to-friends ratio, …
Turkish Eu Accession: The Influence Of The Far Right, Gregory Stryker
Turkish Eu Accession: The Influence Of The Far Right, Gregory Stryker
International Relations Summer Fellows
Samuel Huntington’s concept of ‘a clash of civilizations’ is used more frequently by some in the EU to explain the question of why the EU is seemingly stalling Turkey from becoming a full member state of the EU. Scholars offer many other possible reasons to explain the attempts from the EU to delay or even prevent Turkish accession based around arguments of identity, economics, or human rights, among others. This paper takes a different approach from other scholarly works by examining the domestic politics in the countries that have delayed Turkey from progressing with the accession negotiations. I argue that …
A Nation Of Informants: Reining In Post-9/11 Coercion Of Intelligence Informants, Diala Shamas
A Nation Of Informants: Reining In Post-9/11 Coercion Of Intelligence Informants, Diala Shamas
Brooklyn Law Review
This article challenges the adequacy of the existing legal and regulatory framework governing informant recruitment and coercion practices to protect fundamental rights, informed by the Muslim-American experience. It looks at the growing law enforcement practice of recruiting informants among Muslim-American communities for intelligence gathering purposes. Although the coercion of law-abiding individuals to provide information to federal law enforcement agencies for intelligence gathering purposes implicates significant rights, it is left unregulated. Existing, albeit limited, restraints on the government agents’ ability to coerce individuals to provide information either assume a criminal context, or are driven by historical concerns over FBI corruption. As …
The Context Of Violence: The Lautenberg Amendment & Interpretive Issues In The Gun Control Act, Rachel B. Polan
The Context Of Violence: The Lautenberg Amendment & Interpretive Issues In The Gun Control Act, Rachel B. Polan
Brooklyn Law Review
Few areas of the law are as hotly debated as gun control, or as universally condemned as domestic violence – and the Supreme Court’s decisions on the Lautenberg Amendment address both. An amendment to the Gun Control Act, it prohibits persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from owning a firearm. The amendment qualifies a predicate conviction as one that has a “force clause” as an element. In particular, while looking at the force in domestic violence, the Supreme Court has acknowledged that one must also look to context: a “squeeze of an arm” of an intimate partner …
The Impact Of Language Acquisition And Language Learning On Learning Process: A Meta-Synthesis, Ashley Allman
The Impact Of Language Acquisition And Language Learning On Learning Process: A Meta-Synthesis, Ashley Allman
Special Education Masters Program Theses
This meta-synthesis explores the correlation between language acquisition and learning. Children who are bilingual have advantages and disadvantages to how they learn. When research first started on this idea, common opinion was that it was a disadvantage to be bilingual. However, as research has progressed more advantages than disadvantages of being bilingual have been found. Furthermore, new ways children can learn language have appeared. Options can include but are not limited to parents and guardians, an immersion program, and/or a dual/multi-language program. An important factor of language acquisition is for children to be fluent in one language before they learn …
Decolonial Gestures Of Andean Bilingual College Students Promoting Quechua: Community-Based Participatory Research With Photovoice, Yuliana H. Kenfield
Decolonial Gestures Of Andean Bilingual College Students Promoting Quechua: Community-Based Participatory Research With Photovoice, Yuliana H. Kenfield
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Andean college students in Cusco, Peru, struggle to overcome discrimination against bilingualism during their pursuit of higher education. To examine this situation and possibilities for change, I employed a participatory method, photovoice (Wang & Burris, 1994) within a community-based participatory research framework, to facilitate Quechua-Spanish bilingual college students’ exploration of Quechuan practices in their university. Participatory research methodology promoted critical dialogues to challenge ideologies that have obstructed the revitalization, maintenance, development of the Quechua language in higher education. Although university policies in Cusco formally promote inclusion of indigenous knowledge and practices, bilingual Spanish-Quechua practices on campus have remained largely symbolic. …
Re-Conceptualizing Foreignness : The English Translation Of Chinese Calligraphic Culture, Ge Song
Re-Conceptualizing Foreignness : The English Translation Of Chinese Calligraphic Culture, Ge Song
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Foreignness is one primary concern of Translation Studies. Chinese calligraphy, with its unique aesthetic pursuits and cultural underpinnings, presents an unusual case of foreign otherness in relation to the English language. Thus, theories derived from the translation of Chinese calligraphic culture into English can contribute to our existing knowledge of the nature of translation. Despite sporadic endeavors, translation issues related to Chinese calligraphy remain largely under-researched. This thesis constructs a theoretical framework that offers new perspectives on translating foreignness by exploring how the culture of Chinese calligraphy, concretized in the discourses of classical treatises, has been translated into English since …
A Proposed Solution To "The Most Long-Lasting Schism In The History Of The Jewish People": A Fresh Look At השבת In Leviticus 23:11, Bradford Maris
A Proposed Solution To "The Most Long-Lasting Schism In The History Of The Jewish People": A Fresh Look At השבת In Leviticus 23:11, Bradford Maris
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
The term “S/sabbath” in Lev 23:11 provides the temporal orientation in verses 9–22 for both the sheaf elevation ritual of verses 10–14, on the following day, and the new grain offering ritual (Festival of Weeks), seven weeks thereafter. However, identity of the S/sabbath itself is contextually indeterminable in chapter 23, and has been disputed throughout the centuries. The various theories, all based upon cessation of human labor, contend for either a weekly Sabbath linked to the festival, or one of the two festival days that prohibit all occupational work, or a “Sabbath week.” Yet, none can demonstrably establish its claim …
Bible Software On The Workbench Of The Biblical Scholar: Assessment And Perspective, Oliver Glanz
Bible Software On The Workbench Of The Biblical Scholar: Assessment And Perspective, Oliver Glanz
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
This article pursues two objectives. First, it tries to explain why Bible software is still not accepted as an indispensable tool for textual analysis. Second, it suggests that modern Hebrew databases can truly impact the analytic methodology of biblical scholars and help to verify and falsify interpretative suggestions. To achieve these two objectives, I will first describe the role Bible software plays in today’s scholarship. By contrasting the aids that Bible software offers with the analytic needs of biblical scholars, it is possible to show clearly what current electronic tools need if they are to play an essential methodological role …

Vocabulary! Supporting Diverse Students’ Mastery Of The Vocabulary, Lissa Power-Defur
Summer Literacy Institute
Mastering vocabulary is challenging for second language learners, students with disabilities, and students who are at risk. Given the vast number of words students must master prior to graduation (over 100,000), it is impossible for teachers and specialists to teach students all the words they need to know. Hart and Risley’s landmark study of the language of children from diverse families informs us that all school personnel need to focus on vocabulary. The Virginia Department of Education’s analysis of students performance on the Standards of Learning indicates that weaknesses in vocabulary knowledge adversely effect student’s performance in the general curriculum …

The Variable Expression Of Transitive Subject And Possesor In Wayuunaiki (Guajiro), Andres M. Sabogal
The Variable Expression Of Transitive Subject And Possesor In Wayuunaiki (Guajiro), Andres M. Sabogal
Linguistics ETDs
In Wayuunaiki, verbal affixes cross-reference clausal arguments in various ways. Most notably, there are two ways to express transitive subjects, and two ways to express possessors. Much like voice alternatives, the variable expression of subject and possessor impart different perspectives on a situation type, but unlike traditional voice categories, syntactic valence remains equal. This dissertation characterizes these constructions with a specific question in mind: what do these two cross-referencing alternations communicate and what influences their usage? To answer these questions, I consider the linguistic properties observed in the usage of these constructions in narratives (Jusayú 1986, 1994), and informal conversations. …
Elizabeth I, The Subversion Of Flattery, And John Lyly's Court Plays And Entertainments, Theodora A. Jankowski
Elizabeth I, The Subversion Of Flattery, And John Lyly's Court Plays And Entertainments, Theodora A. Jankowski
Late Tudor and Stuart Drama
This study considers how John Lyly's characters who are allegorical representations of Elizabeth validate the queen, but at the same time raise troubling issues as to her true nature. Theodora Jankowski looks at both the light and the dark side of the Elizabeth character in each of Lyly's court plays, while at the same time considering how that allegory works in terms of the various issues Lyly debates within the plays. She reveals the fraught nature of John Lyly's relationship to Queen Elizabeth. He was not the first creative artist to introduce subversive undercurrents in entertainments designed to flatter the …
Stance-Taking: Jfl Learners And Benefactive Verbs, Kumiko Takizawa
Stance-Taking: Jfl Learners And Benefactive Verbs, Kumiko Takizawa
Dissertations and Theses
This study explores how JFL learners take a benefactive stance in Japanese. As Jaffe (2009) observes, stance-taking "plays a complex role with respect to the naturalization of social and linguistic ideologies and the social structures they legitimate." The way in which language is used to take a stance always concerns the social context in which a speaker finds her/himself. In Japanese, benefactive verbs (kureru, ageru, morau and their honorific and humble equivalents) are indispensable stance indicators for showing gratitude or indebtedness. Such expressions do not really exist in English and their grammar is complex. It is assumed that JFL learners …
