Selling Protest In The News? Movement-Media Framing Of Occupations: An Exploratory Study, Andrew David Butz
Selling Protest In The News? Movement-Media Framing Of Occupations: An Exploratory Study, Andrew David Butz
Dissertations and Theses
Using quantitative content analysis, this study explores social movement (SM) framing in commercial news media -- by comparing how leading newspapers covered prominent protest occupations in 2011 and 2016. More than other SMs, anti-systemic protests like the 2011 Occupy Wall Street (OWS) and the 2016 Malheur Refuge Occupation (MRO) only have partial frame-setting agency, raising a broad theory question (to inform the research questions below): If SMs and media relate as interacting systems, are protest news frames more movement- or more media- driven; and do media not just enable but also constrain SMs?
With the movement-media theory question above, the …

Barriers To The Development Of Smart Cities In Indian Context, Np Rana, S Luthra, S Mangla, Et Al
Plymouth Business School
Smart city development is gaining considerable recognition in the systematic literature and international policies throughout the world. The study aims to identify the key barriers of smart cities from a review of existing literature and views of experts in this area. This work further makes an attempt on the prioritisation of barriers to recognise the most important barrier category and ranking of specific barriers within the categories to the development of smart cities in India. Through the existing literature, this work explored 31 barriers of smart cities development and divided them into six categories. This research work employed fuzzy Analytic …
Perceptions Of Spatiality: Supramodal Meanings And Metaphors In Therapeutic Environments, Stephanie Liddicoat
Perceptions Of Spatiality: Supramodal Meanings And Metaphors In Therapeutic Environments, Stephanie Liddicoat
Interiority
This paper explores the perceptions of the spatiality of individuals who self-harm, with the aim of understanding the design aspects which foster supportive therapeutic environments. Analysis of responses found that there were key similarities in areas of perception of architectural interior space, refuting the commonly held view that all architectural response is purely subjective, and that subjective experience cannot be shared. Three examples of perceptions of interior therapeutic environments are discussed to highlight how the perceptions of spatiality of individuals who self-harm consists of a particular cluster of spatial understandings, behaviours and focuses, manifesting as a strong emotional overtone overlaid …
Some Distinctive Features Of Narrative Environments, Tricia Austin
Some Distinctive Features Of Narrative Environments, Tricia Austin
Interiority
This paper explores key characteristics of spatial narratives, which are called narrative environments here. Narrative environments can take the form of exhibitions, brand experiences and certain city quarters where stories are deliberately being told in, and through, the space. It is argued that narrative environments can be conceived as being located on a spectrum of narrative practice between media-based narratives and personal life narratives. While watching a screen or reading a book, you are, although often deeply emotionally immersed in a story, always physically ‘outside’ the story. By contrast, you can walk right into a narrative environment, becoming emotionally, intellectually …

The Patterns Of Human Trafficking Of Indonesian Migrant Workers: Case Study Of The Riau Islands And Johor Border Crossing, Endro Sulaksono
The Patterns Of Human Trafficking Of Indonesian Migrant Workers: Case Study Of The Riau Islands And Johor Border Crossing, Endro Sulaksono
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
In this article, patterns of sending Indonesian migrant workers through the cross-border between the Riau Islands, Indonesia and Johor, Malaysia are examined. These patterns have implications for transnational crimes of human smuggling and trafficking. A new pattern involving Indonesian migrant workers was revealed. The migrant workers enter and reside in the destination country legally and subsequently become illegal migrants because the employer or the company does not extend their contracts. This pattern differs from two other patterns that are commonly practiced and are well-known: legal entry and illegal stay, if migrant workers work in a destination country without working permits; …

America’S Pastime: Racist Nativism Among Non-Hispanic White Major League Baseball Fans, Mallory J. Morken
America’S Pastime: Racist Nativism Among Non-Hispanic White Major League Baseball Fans, Mallory J. Morken
Open Access Theses
The thesis qualitatively explores the immigration and racial discourses employed by Major League Baseball fans through a purposive sample of twenty-four non-Hispanic whites in Miami, Florida, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Major League Baseball, popularly regarded as “America’s national pastime,” provides a strategic site of inquiry as rosters have grown more international in the previous decades, mirroring demographic shifts in the United States. Results demonstrate that while white fans support migrant players on their team, their support often rests on the players’ ability to produce wins, approximating the principle of interest convergence within critical race theory. Despite their professed tolerance for international …

Unpacking Shame As Experienced By Three White Male Engineering Students, Kanembe Shanachilubwa
McNair Scholars Research
The following is a cross-sectional examination of an ongoing investigation of shame in the context of engineering education. White male junior level engineering students were recruited to participate in individual interviews centered around their experiences and expectations as undergraduates. The study sought to investigate how these students experienced shame within the context of engineering education using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as the research method. As the current results and finding only represent three fully analyzed cases out of five total, broad and definitive conclusions about the study group will be withheld. Instead, I will give each of the three represented …

Clarifying The Social Roots Of The Disproportionate Classification Of Racial Minorities And Males With Learning Disabilities, Dara Shifrer
Clarifying The Social Roots Of The Disproportionate Classification Of Racial Minorities And Males With Learning Disabilities, Dara Shifrer
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The disproportionate placement of racial minorities and males into special education for learning disabilities (LDs) raises concerns that classifications occur inaccurately or inequitably. This study uses data from the Education Longitudinal Survey of 2002 to investigate the social etiology of LD classifications that persist into adolescence. Findings suggest the overclassification of racial minorities is largely consistent with (clinically relevant) differences in educational performance. Classifications may occur inconsistently or subjectively, with clinically irrelevant qualities like school characteristics and linguistic-immigration history independently predictive of disability classification. Finally, classifications may be partially biased, with male overclassification largely unexplained by this study’s measures and …
Gender-Exclusive Language: Women’S Perception Of Linguistic Ostracism, Voice, And Power In Politics, Michelle Roxanne Grzybowski
Gender-Exclusive Language: Women’S Perception Of Linguistic Ostracism, Voice, And Power In Politics, Michelle Roxanne Grzybowski
Theses and Dissertations
Gender-exclusive language is a type of subtly sexist language that makes reference to a single gender group thereby excluding other gender groups (Stout & Dasgupta, 2011). Two studies examined how the use of gender-exclusive language impacts the experiences of women who were elected members of county boards. Specifically, the studies surveyed county board members in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin to determine whether the naturally occurring variation between the use of gender-exclusive language (e.g., using chairman to indicate both men and women) or gender-neutral language (e.g., chair or chairperson) was related to perceptions of ostracism and a sense of …

Researching The Mechanisms Of Gossip In Organizations: From Fly On The Wall To Fly In The Soup, Dominique J. Darmon
Researching The Mechanisms Of Gossip In Organizations: From Fly On The Wall To Fly In The Soup, Dominique J. Darmon
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, I explored how to research a sensitive topic such as gossip in organizations and used a narrative approach to illustrate the methodological and ethical issues that come up when considering a variety of research methods. I first attempted to conduct an ethnographic research on a project group from a Dutch university undergoing a major change. At the very beginning of the project, as a participant observer, I struggled to remain an outsider, or a “fly on the wall.” But as issues of power came into play and access became increasingly problematic, I moved towards the role of …

An Analysis Of Peer-Assessment In Chinese As A Second Language Classroom Presentation, Lu Lu
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
This study aims to 1) investigate the difference in the scorings between PA and teacher assessment in oral presentation, and 2) explore student’s attitude about PA through both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A class of 12 students in an upper-intermediate Chinese language class adopted PA by using Poll Everywhere during an academic year. The results indicate that intermediate-high Chinese learners and instructor interpret the criteria differently in Pronunciation, Fluency, Clarity, and Accuracy, but agree with the scores on Content and Delivery. Most students are positive that PA is a useful method to help them actively participate in class discussions and …
Educators’ Perceptions Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication To Facilitate Communication Among Preschool Students With Disabilities, Honey Meadows
Doctor of Education in Special Education Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how preschool educators perceive augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and how those perceptions influence AAC utilization in preschool classrooms. Specifically, this investigation focused on gaining better understandings about educators’ views, beliefs, and attitudes about AAC utilization to facilitate communication. Semistructured, open-ended interviews, classroom observations, and document review were the data collection sources used. Findings suggest that preschool special educators value the use of AAC and understand the basic human right for all students to participate. However, special education teachers and special education paraprofessionals perceive their roles and responsibilities, as communicative …

Unraveling Identity Signifier Literacy: A Case Study Of First-Year Composition Students' Communication Practices, Bailey Mcalister
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
Identity signifier literacy is defined as one’s ability to accurately read – via personal interactions or via visual, verbal, written, or digital communication – the signifiers others display in direct and indirect ways and interpret these signifiers to gain understanding of others’ identities. In this study, 22 first-year composition students were surveyed about their communication practices in order to see how their identity signifier literacies influence and are influenced by digital environments and composition. These results are meant to improve first-year composition pedagogy by making connections between students’ informal composition practices and their academic composition courses.
Can Self-Defeating Humor Make You Happy? Cognitive Interviews Reveal The Adaptive Side Of The Self-Defeating Humor Style, Sonja Heintz, Willibald Ruch
Can Self-Defeating Humor Make You Happy? Cognitive Interviews Reveal The Adaptive Side Of The Self-Defeating Humor Style, Sonja Heintz, Willibald Ruch
School of Psychology
Abstract The present set of studies employs two cognitive interviewing techniques (thinking aloud and online cognitive probing) of the scale assessing the self-defeating humor style, aiming at delineating the role that self-defeating humor plays in self-esteem and emotions. The self-defeating humor style comprises humor to enhance one’s relationships with others at the expense of oneself, and has often been related to lower well-being. The analyses are based on 392 item responses of a typical sample (Study 1) and 104 item responses of high scorers on the self-defeating scale (Study 2). Content analyses revealed that higher scores on the self-defeating scale …
A Fuzzy Ahp-Topsis Approach To Supply Partner Selection In Continuous Aid Humanitarian Supply Chains, Vg Venkatesh, A Zhang, E Deakins, S Luthra, S Mangla
A Fuzzy Ahp-Topsis Approach To Supply Partner Selection In Continuous Aid Humanitarian Supply Chains, Vg Venkatesh, A Zhang, E Deakins, S Luthra, S Mangla
Plymouth Business School
The selection of suitable supply partners is a strategic issue for managers working in humanitarian operations and has received little attention in the literature. In humanitarian operations, complexity characterizes the continuous-aid procurement operations, and the selection criteria can differ from those used in commercial supply chain settings. This paper advances knowledge by introducing a supply partner selection framework for continuous-aid procurement. A proposed multi-criteria decision-making model uses selection criteria attributes verified by the extant literature and by field experts. A fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process is then used to compute criterion weights, and a fuzzy Technique for Order Performance by Similarity …
Grammatical Errors By Arabic Esl Students: An Investigation Of L1 Transfer Through Error Analysis, Aisha Saud Alasfour
Grammatical Errors By Arabic Esl Students: An Investigation Of L1 Transfer Through Error Analysis, Aisha Saud Alasfour
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the effect of first language (L1) transfer on Arabic ESL learners' acquisition of the relative clauses, the passive voice and the definite article. I used Contrastive Analysis (CA) and Error Analysis (EA) to analyze 50 papers written by Arabic ESL students at the ACTFL Advanced Mid proficiency level. The analysis was paired with interviews with five advanced students to help determine whether L1 transfer was, in fact, influencing students' errors predicted by CA.
Students in this study made L1 errors along with other errors. Although no statistical difference was found between the frequency of transfer and other …

A Distance Based Method For Solving Multi-Objective Optimization Problems, Murshid Kamal, Syed Aqib Jalil, Syed Mohd Muneeb, Irfan Ali
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A new model for the weighted method of goal programming is proposed based on minimizing the distances between ideal objectives to feasible objective space. It provides the best compromised solution for Multi Objective Linear Programming Problems (MOLPP). The proposed model tackles MOLPP by solving a series of single objective sub-problems, where the objectives are transformed into constraints. The compromise solution so obtained may be improved by defining priorities in terms of the weight. A criterion is also proposed for deciding the best compromise solution. Applications of the algorithm are discussed for transportation and assignment problems involving multiple and conflicting objectives. …
The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 2: Medieval Meets Medievalism, Jan M. Ziolkowski
The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 2: Medieval Meets Medievalism, Jan M. Ziolkowski
Juggling for Mary
This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life.
Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before …

“Life Is Very Hard Here”: A Comparative Analysis Of Central American Migrants In El Norte And Enrique’S Journey, Gayle Anderson
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
The purpose of this paper is to reveal cultural challenges indigenous peoples and people in poverty face in their Central American homelands and in the United States when migrating northward. Central Americans living in economic and social structures of hardship and/or cultural persecution leave their home places seeking to survive. Analyzing two works of art, the fictionalized realty film El Norte and the book Enrique’s Journey, provide a revealing lens into economic and political plights facing Central American migrants that drives them to leave. Past imperialists’ confiscation of the region’s natural resources and subjugation of its native peoples cemented …

Deaf Lesbian Identity, Noël E. Cherasaro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deaf lesbians are a population that is underrepresented in the academic literature. Through the use of narrative inquiry, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with a woman who self-identified as Deaf and lesbian. She shared her experiences growing up as a woman who is Deaf and later in her life, realized she is lesbian. The researcher juxtaposed her experiences as a hearing, lesbian woman and an ally to the Deaf community to better illuminate the Deaf lesbian experiences. The research delved into how these dual minority identities have affected the Deaf lesbian participant as she makes her way in the world …

Nāgārjuna’s doctrine of emptiness, his ideas on “two truths” and language, and his general method of arguing are presented clearly by him and can be stated without paradox. That the dialetheists today can restate his beliefs in paradoxical ways does not mean that Nāgārjuna argued that way; in fact, their restatements misrepresent and undercut his arguments.

Individual Differences In Relational Learning And Analogical Reasoning: A Computational Model Of Longitudinal Change, Leonidas A. A. Doumas, Robert G. Morrison, Lindsey E. Richland
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Children’s cognitive control and knowledge at school entry predict growth rates in analogical reasoning skill over time; however, the mechanisms by which these factors interact and impact learning are unclear. We propose that inhibitory control (IC) is critical for developing both the relational representations necessary to reason and the ability to use these representations in complex problem solving. We evaluate this hypothesis using computational simulations in a model of analogical thinking, Discovery of Relations by Analogy/Learning and Inference with Schemas and Analogy (DORA/LISA; Doumas et al., 2008). Longitudinal data from children who solved geometric analogy problems repeatedly over 6 …
