Arctic Paradox: Polar Bears, Climate Change And American Environmentalism, Carolyn Kozak Loeffler
Arctic Paradox: Polar Bears, Climate Change And American Environmentalism, Carolyn Kozak Loeffler
Arctic and Northern Studies
By virtually any standard of measurement, the Arctic is hotter than ever before, physically, politically and emotionally. Rising ocean temperatures, opening sea lanes, disappearing pack ice and global fear of environmental devastation have combined to make the Arctic Ocean the great question mark about the future of the human species with ursus maritimus, the "sea bear," standing as perhaps the most evocative symbol of our global responsibility and fate. In human eyes the polar bear has long been a paradoxical creature, mirroring a dilemma at the center of America's relationship to the Arctic today. The region's stretches of uninterrupted ecosystems …

"Something That Not Everybody Has": Parents' Reasons For Enrolling In Spanish Immersion Program, Danya Schimmack
Linguistics
Immersion programs are a form of bilingual education where content classes are taught in a second language. Immersion programs are generally optional choices which means that parents must make the conscious decision to enroll their children in the specific program. Thus, my research question: why do parents decide to enroll their children in the Spanish Immersion Program of Chugiak, Alaska? This research question and site were selected based on my own experience as a learner in the program and my personal curiosity towards my own parents' enrollment decisions. This study involved semi-structured interviews with twelve parents, including my own parents, …
Teaching English Language Learners In Alaska: A Study Of Translanguaging Choices, Jacquelyn A. Crace-Murray
Teaching English Language Learners In Alaska: A Study Of Translanguaging Choices, Jacquelyn A. Crace-Murray
Linguistics
The number of English Language Learners continues to rise in U.S. schools. However, general classroom teachers are not equipped with English language acquisition methodologies and strategies to teach their increasingly diverse student populations. Because of the deficit views regarding bilingual students, and the monolingual ideologies present in today's public school system, these attitudes and perspectives impact teacher practices in the classroom. They negatively affect student language learning by neglecting to utilize the vast linguistic repertoires bilinguals bring with them to the classroom as resources. They also lead to the over-referral of English language learners for special education services and to …

Linguistics
This qualitative, participatory action research was conducted to investigate the following research questions: What are the attitudes of the teachers in ESDY 630: Language, Culture and Teaching in Secondary Schools class toward culturally responsive teaching and learning? How does participating in ESDY 630: Language, Culture and Teaching in Secondary Schools class affect attitudes of the educators? How do educators co-construct the relationship between standards and culturally responsive teaching and learning? Data were gathered from five pre-service teachers in the University of Alaska Anchorage Master of Arts in Teaching program in a 2-credit Language, Culture, and Teaching in Secondary Schools class. …

The Past Is In Front Of Us: A Deep Human History?, Ann Mcgrath
The Past Is In Front Of Us: A Deep Human History?, Ann Mcgrath
Talking Heads Seminar Series
The time-shallow national anniversary traditions premised upon imperial ‘firsts’ continue to divide ‘history’ from the long duree of Australia’s human past. This talk will first consider the 1901 re-enactment of Captain Cook’s landing at Botany Bay, which represented an effort to reify the first British arrivals. Yet it arguably became a demonstration of multiple sovereignties. Secondly it will consider whether it possible to bridge these barriers, especially without the device of clear-cut ‘arrival event’ or landing dates? In other words, how might the 60,000 year span of human experience in Australia enter the realm of ‘history’ – if indeed it …
