Variations In Black Media Coverage Of The East St. Louis Race Riot, Angela Rene Womack May 2018

Variations In Black Media Coverage Of The East St. Louis Race Riot, Angela Rene Womack

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Research for this thesis was undertaken after first researching the East St. Louis Race Riot and seeing that there was an insufficient amount of analysis that had been done on black media coverage in US history overall as well as with the riot specifically. Three significant trends of black media were found my during research. East St. Louis Race Riots black media coverage during and after the events varied at the local, regional, and national levels. My research showed that three media outlets varied. The local media provided information that guided victims and volunteers as to where to go for …

Congolese Refugee Students In Higher Education: Equity And Opportunity, Refik Sadiković

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore Congolese refugee students’ experiences in higher education in the United States. In order to understand the challenges Congolese students face in higher education, this study used narrative inquiry methodology to investigate Congolese students’ lived experiences that affected their educational endeavors before and after resettlement to the United States. The study examined personal stories of 10 Congolese students in the Pacific Northwest using semi-structured in-depth interviews, one-on-one follow-up interviews, field notes and two focus group interviews. Using narrative analysis five reoccurring themes were identified and discussed in the findings. The study findings indicate …

Privileging Public Defense Research, Janet Moore, Ellen Yaroshefsky, Andrew L.B. Davies May 2018

Privileging Public Defense Research, Janet Moore, Ellen Yaroshefsky, Andrew L.B. Davies

Mercer Law Review

Empirical research on public defense is a new and rapidly growing field in which the quality of attorney-client communication is emerging as a top priority. For decades, law has lagged behind medicine and other professions in the empirical study of effective communication. The few studies of attorney-client communication focus mainly on civil cases. They also tend to rely on role-playing by non-lawyers or on post hoc inquiries about past experiences. Direct observation by researchers of real-time defendant-defender communication offers advantages over those approaches, but injecting researchers into the attorney-client dyad is in tension with legal and ethical precepts that protect …

Perceptions About Educational Supports From Those Living In Poverty In The Suburbs, Sean Christopher Corey May 2018

Perceptions About Educational Supports From Those Living In Poverty In The Suburbs, Sean Christopher Corey

Dissertations

Supporting children who are living in conditions of economic poverty has been an issue that educational leaders have attempted to solve for many years. Much of the research has focused on alleviating the conditions associated with poverty in urban settings. The share of the population living in poverty in the suburbs is increasing at a faster rate than the share of the population living in urban settings. The supports to alleviate suburban poverty that have been applied have generalized the response structures that were based on studies from urban and rural setting. The purpose of this study was to contribute …

You Could Have Told Me That In The First Place: Five Tips That Might Have Saved A Young Lawyer A Lot Of Trouble, Jay O'Keeffe

University of Richmond Law Review

I will open with a confession: I have very, very little to contribute to legal scholarship. My day-to-day work as a lawyer and a parent keeps me busy. My career to date as a generalist has not led me to develop any great substantive expertise in a particular area of the law. Even my war stories are boring because they cluster around briefs, procedural defaults, and oral arguments. But I do have one thing to offer. I have been lucky in my career to work in “Biglaw,” then at a medium-sized firm of about fifty lawyers, and most recently at …

A Commentary On Litigation Involving Uber Technologies, Inc., Catherine Hagemeier May 2018

A Commentary On Litigation Involving Uber Technologies, Inc., Catherine Hagemeier

Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Uber Technologies, Inc. is a peer-to-peer ridesharing, food delivery, and transportation network managed in San Francisco, California. Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp developed the idea for the ridesharing app in 2008, after experiencing difficulty hailing a cab. They originally designed the app to be used in major metropolitan areas, but the business inevitably took off; it now operates in 633 cities worldwide. In 2017, Uber claimed that the company earned roughly $7.5 billion in revenue, employed more than 12,000 “independent drivers,” and connected over one billion people (“Finding the Way”). Though widely successful and heralded as a major influencer in …

Due Process And The Right To Legal Counsel For Unaccompanied Minors, Marielos G. Ramos May 2018

Due Process And The Right To Legal Counsel For Unaccompanied Minors, Marielos G. Ramos

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Unaccompanied minors arriving to the United States fleeing violence and seeking protection are apprehended, detained in facilities, and placed in removal proceedings in accordance with U.S. immigration laws. Like adults, these children have to appear in immigration court to fight deportation and must apply for any form of legal relief for which they may be eligible. However, removal proceedings work as a civil and not a criminal process, and immigration laws have established that while noncitizens have the right to an attorney, they are not entitled to legal counsel at the government’s expense. This thesis examines how the denial of …

Entering The Trump Ice Age: Contextualizing The New Immigration Enforcement Regime, Bill Ong Hing May 2018

Entering The Trump Ice Age: Contextualizing The New Immigration Enforcement Regime, Bill Ong Hing

Texas A&M Law Review

During the early stages of the Trump ICE age, America seemed to be witnessing and experiencing an unparalleled era of immigration enforcement. But is it unparalleled? Did we not label Barack Obama the “deporter-inchief?” Was it not George W. Bush who used the authority of the Patriot Act to round up nonimmigrants from Muslim and Arab countries, and did his ICE not commonly engage in armed raids at factories and other worksites? Are there not strong parallels that can be drawn between Trump enforcement plans and actions and those of other eras? What about the fear and hysteria that seems …

Roller Derby As A Form Of Self-Empowerment: An Examination Of Female Athletes' Resilience To Intimate Partner Violence, Esmeralda Castillo

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore if playing roller derby can yield one more resilient to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). IPV is a major wellness concern to our present lives. However, there are many who experience violence, yet do not develop debilitating symptoms. The subject of resilience has emerged to account for this. Resilience can be interpreted as “bouncing back” from adversity, and adapting well to sources of stress (American Psychological Association, n.d.). Sport psychologists have recognized sport as a site for the development of resilient qualities. For females, team sports offer a context to experience empowerment. The …

The Influence Of Slavery On The Black Body: Black Lives Matter’S Intersectional Methodology And New Advancements, Mone Dixon May 2018

The Influence Of Slavery On The Black Body: Black Lives Matter’S Intersectional Methodology And New Advancements, Mone Dixon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Racial discrimination has been a significant problem in the United States. For centuries, African Americans have endured and resisted (in multiple ways) a system of bondage, a system where they faced political, economic, institutional, and social oppression. It is a system that condoned the violence that often resulted in the innocent deaths of Black bodies since the beginning of slavery. As property, the Black body was viewed and used as a commodity; thus the dehumanization of Black bodies was justified. The history of slavery demonstrates the different ways Black bodies have been and continue to be hindered by its effects. …

Navigating The Singapore’S Private International Rules In The Age Of Innovative Cross-Border Commercial Litigation Framework, Man Yip May 2018

Navigating The Singapore’S Private International Rules In The Age Of Innovative Cross-Border Commercial Litigation Framework, Man Yip

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In the last decade, Singapore has been consistently working on consolidating its position as a leading dispute resolution hub in Asia. China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative affords, in principle, an invaluable opportunity for Singapore to foster its role in dispute resolution services. Conversely, the success of the OBOR is in part dependent upon the availability of reliable and efficient dispute resolution mechanisms to handle commercial disputes that will invariably arise. Singapore looks poised to contribute to the success of the OBOR in that respect, in light of its mature and business-friendly legal system.

Coincidentally, China announced its OBOR …

Design And Verification Of A Pipelined Advanced Encryption Standard (Aes) Encryption Algorithm With A 256-Bit Cipher Key Using The Uvm Methodology, Devyani Madhukar Mirajkar

Theses

Encryption is the process of altering information to make it unreadable by anyone except those having the key that allows them to change information back to the original readable form. Encryption is important because it allows you to securely protect the data that you don’t want anyone else to have access to. Today, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is the most widely adopted encryption method. Till date there are no cryptanalytic attacks discovered against AES. Hence the verification of the hardware implementation of the AES Core is of utmost importance. In this research paper, the design and verification of a …

The Right Of Early Access To Criminal Legal Aid In Indonesia: Clear Rule, Clearer Violations, Maxwell Abbott Apr 2018

The Right Of Early Access To Criminal Legal Aid In Indonesia: Clear Rule, Clearer Violations, Maxwell Abbott

Indonesia Law Review

This article will examine the right of early access to criminal legal aid in Indonesia, both in theory and in practice. In theory, the right of early access to criminal legal aid (the Right) is clear and firmly established in Indonesian law and international law which applies to Indonesia: individuals under arrest or in detention are entitled to receive legal aid at all stages of the criminal justice process. Therefore, law enforcement may not deny or delay a suspect’s access to a lawyer during the initial procedural stages of arrest, investigation and detention. This article will argue that the Right …

Special Education Dispute Resolution Procedures: A Study Of The Factors Influencing The Decision-Making Practices Of Special Education Administrators, Steven Bayne Apr 2018

Special Education Dispute Resolution Procedures: A Study Of The Factors Influencing The Decision-Making Practices Of Special Education Administrators, Steven Bayne

Doctoral Dissertations

My research examines how and when special education administrators use discretion during due process procedures, as well as the contexts and factors that shape decision-making. This qualitative cross-case study explores the decision-making practices of special education administrators working in high-performing and low-performing school districts in Connecticut. It is important to study this topic because there is a lack of research examining the decision-making practices of special education administrators. The existing research indicates that due process procedures are costly, contentious, and negatively impact the human and financial resources of school districts. Furthermore, due process requests continue to rise across Connecticut. I …

Further, the author contends that greater awareness of the benefits of emotional support animals will alleviate public health and safety concerns.

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Chasing Plenty: A Documentary on Food Security in Montana Our GLI group aims to examine the following question: how will climate change impact food security? To address this question we are conducting interviews in Montana. Despite being an agricultural state, many Montanans struggle with food insecurity, and are left without plentiful or healthy options for food. We aim to research this issue by interviewing local community members involved in food distribution. The interview data will be compiled in a short documentary discussing current issues in food security, how these problems are likely to evolve in the future, and propose solutions …

Framing Failure In The Legal Classroom: Techniques For Encouraging Growth And Resilience, Kaci Bishop Apr 2018

Framing Failure In The Legal Classroom: Techniques For Encouraging Growth And Resilience, Kaci Bishop

Arkansas Law Review

In law school, a fear of failure can paralyze students and hinder their learning. Students may not try a new skill or a new argument or even give an answer in class if they are unsure or uncertain that they will get it right—or are afraid they will get it wrong. In part, this resistance to and fear of failure is exacerbated by legal education’s institutional focus on outcomes: grades, class rank, and high-paying jobs. This focus often causes students to be increasingly extrinsically motivated and encourages a “fixed mindset,” which contributes deleteriously to the mental health and intellectual curiosity …

Solving Sewer Service: Fighting Fraud With Technology, Adrian Gottshall Apr 2018

Solving Sewer Service: Fighting Fraud With Technology, Adrian Gottshall

Arkansas Law Review

Fraudulently obtained default judgments ruin lives. Many defendants are ignorant of their cases and therefore do not appear for court. Defendants suffer dire consequences as victims of falsified service of process. They learn of their lawsuits after their wages are garnished, assets seized, or when their poor credit precludes them from obtaining housing or a new job. For decades, fraudulent service of process has been widespread in high volume court dockets, such as landlord and tenant, debt collection, and small claims matters. Judgments granted to the debt collector plaintiff disproportionately affect low-income communities of color. Some plaintiffs obtained such judgments …

The Right Tool For Trade Relations With China, Anna M. Han, Colleen Chien

Faculty Publications

In life, it’s important to have the right tool for the job, and trade is no different. The technology and intellectual property issues at the heart of the recent US-China trade dispute are complex and nuanced. Tariffs are a big stick good for shaking at partners but also, as the stock markets dramatic reaction shows us, capable of great collateral damage. And so, as an alternative to the blunt instrument of tariffs, we propose some surgical policy interventions, unilateral and bilateral, for moving forward.

The US Trade Representative’s premise for the sanctions is nothing new—that US companies are tired of …
