Cyberbiosecurity: An Emerging New Discipline To Help Safeguard The Bioeconomy, Randall S. Murch, William K. So, Wallace G. Buchholz, Sanjay Raman, Jean Peccoud

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Cyberbiosecurity is being proposed as a formal new enterprise which encompasses cybersecurity, cyber-physical security and biosecurity as applied to biological and biomedical-based systems. In recent years, an array of important meetings and public discussions, commentaries and publications have occurred that highlight numerous vulnerabilities. While necessary first steps, they do not provide a systematized structure for effectively promoting communication, education and training, elucidation and prioritization for analysis, research, development, test and evaluation and implementation of scientific, technological, standards of practice, policy, or even regulatory or legal considerations for protecting the bioeconomy. Further, experts in biosecurity and cybersecurity are generally not aware …

Insights Into Early Stage Of Antibiotic Development In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Survey Of Targets, Costs, And Durations, Christine Årdal, Enrico Baraldi, Ursula Theuretzbacher, Kevin Outterson, Jens Plahte, Francesco Ciabuschi, John-Arne Røttingen

Faculty Scholarship

Antibiotic innovation has dwindled to dangerously low levels in the past 30 years. Since resistance continues to evolve, this innovation deficit can have perilous consequences on patients. A number of new incentives have been suggested to stimulate greater antibacterial drug innovation. To design effective solutions, a greater understanding is needed of actual antibiotic discovery and development costs and timelines. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) undertake most discovery and early phase development for antibiotics and other drugs. This paper attempts to gather a better understanding of SMEs’ targets, costs, and durations related to discovery and early phase development of antibacterial therapies.

Characterization Of The Interaction Between R. Conorii And Human Host Vitronectin In Rickettsial Pathogenesis, Abigail Inez Fish Apr 2018

Characterization Of The Interaction Between R. Conorii And Human Host Vitronectin In Rickettsial Pathogenesis, Abigail Inez Fish

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia are inoculated into the mammalian host during hematophagous arthropod feeding. Once in the bloodstream and during dissemination, the survival of these pathogens is dependent upon their ability to evade innate host defenses until a proper cellular target is reached. The establishment of a successful infection also relies on the ability of the bacteria to attach and invade target cells, as failure to do so results in destruction of the bacterium. Rickettsia conorii expresses an outer membrane protein, Adr1, which binds the multifunctional human glycoprotein, vitronectin, to promote resistance to complement mediated killing. Homologs of Adr1 are …

Analysis Of Downstream Signaling Of Tlrs After U0126 Inhibition, Brandy Frazier Apr 2018

Analysis Of Downstream Signaling Of Tlrs After U0126 Inhibition, Brandy Frazier

Student Scholar Showcase

Francisella tularensis (F. tularensis) is a pathogenic bacterium which causes the disease tularemia. F. tularensis is thought to be able to enter and multiply inside of liver cells because it interacts with toll-like receptors (TLRs). Examining the signaling pathway downstream of the TLRs will allow for better understanding of how this disease works and possible treatment strategies. In this study I propose to examine how molecular inhibitors affect signaling downstream of TLRs in HepG2 cells treated with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from E. coli. Mitogen-activated protein kinase is a cellular molecule in signaling cascades that directs cellular response mechanisms. MAPK can be …

A Multivariate Approach For An Improved Assessment Of Pre-Erythrocytic Stage Therapies Targeting Plasmodium Vivax And Plasmodium Falciparum, Alison E. Roth

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The malaria pre-erythrocytic stages have been identified as an ideal therapeutic target, but complex in vitro models for Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum lack the efficiency needed for rapid screening and evaluation of new vaccines and drugs, especially targeting the P. vivax hypnozoite. To address this challenge, we employed a multi-parameter approach using “omics’” to identify pre-erythrocytic targets and biomarkers, guide phenotypic therapeutic screening, and study parasite functionality with innovative bioassays using highcontent screening. Herein, we discuss three novel bioassays formatted in 384-well plate systems with utilization of commercially-available materials and application of high-content imaging for rapid bio-image analysis. To …

The Potential Impact Of Using Vaccination And Insect Repellent To Control The Spread Of Yellow Fever, Erin N. Bodine, Erin Deery, Casey E. Middleton

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. It has historically caused thousands of deaths throughout Africa, the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean and continues to pose threats in Africa and Central and South America. The disease is most detrimental in densely populated areas with warmer climates where individuals have limited access to health care facilities. These conditions are exemplified by the yellow fever epidemic of 1878 in Memphis, Tennessee. The limited medical knowledge, warm climate, and densely populated urban areas greatly contributed to the magnitude of the epidemic that killed thousands. We developed an …

Abstract Category: Research

Purpose: Tick-borne rickettsial diseases (TBRD) are a group of geographically distinct infectious diseases that share a common molecular structure and clinical presentation. TBRDs include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, human monocytic ehrlichiosis, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. These rickettsial diseases are caused by a group of gram-negative obligate intracellular coccobacilli that present with acute-onset fever, headache, generalized muscle pain, and a characteristic rash. As these symptoms mimic viral illness, they are often misdiagnosed early on in the disease course, delaying the onset of proper antimicrobial treatment. A high index of suspicion is necessary for clinical diagnosis; thus, it is …

The Mosquito Can Be More Dangerous Than The Mortar Round, Arthur M. Smith, Craig Hooper Apr 2018

The Mosquito Can Be More Dangerous Than The Mortar Round, Arthur M. Smith, Craig Hooper

Naval War College Review

These words, penned in 1943 by the commander in chief of British forces in Burma during World War II, underline the reality that losses to malaria and other preventable diseases among Allied forces operating in the China-Burma- India theater far exceeded the number of casualties inflicted by enemy action.1 Today, as the global war on terrorism evolves, a similar failure to appreciate noncombat environmental threats—including mosquitoes and other disease- carrying insect vectors—will once again degrade combat effectiveness of deployed forces.

Involuntary Sterilization Among Hiv-Positive Garifuna Women From Honduras Seeking Asylum In The United States: Two Case Reports, Holly G. Atkinson, Deborah Ottenheimer

Publications and Research

Voluntary sterilization is one of the most widely used forms of contraception by women worldwide; however, involuntary sterilization is considered a violation of multiple human rights and grounds for asylum in the United States. Women have been disproportionately affected by this practice. We report two cases of involuntary sterilization in HIV-positive Garifuna women from Honduras who sought asylum in America and were medically evaluated at the request of their attorneys. Key lessons can be drawn from these cases with regard to the importance of medical evaluations in establishing persecution. These include the need for a detailed account of the events …

Interactions Between Aerobic Exercise Volume, Academic Stress, And Immune Function, Teresa Wiczynski

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many college students exercise individually or participate in collegiate and intramural sports in addition to fulfilling their stressful academic requirements. The combination of accumulated stress and vigorous exercise could result in an impaired immune system, prompting the onset of disease and absences in class and sports practice.

Twenty-six male and female participants aged 18 to 23 were recruited for this study. Over the course of an academic semester, participants completed weekly electronic surveys documenting stress levels, aerobic exercise, and symptoms related to upper respiratory tract infections. Participants were evaluated at four different time points (Baseline, Post-Midterm Exam, Baseline Reassessment, and …
