Chronic inflammation is a potential systemic risk factor for many bladder dysfunctions, including interstitial cystitis (IC). However, the underlying mechanism through which a healthy bladder protects itself from inflammatory triggers remains unknown. In this study, we identified odor compounds in urine obtained from IC patients and healthy controls. Using comprehensive solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-TOF-MS) profiling and bioinformatics, we found that levels of urinary volatile metabolites, such as menthol, were significantly reduced in IC patients, compared to healthy controls. In an attempt to understand the mechanistic meaning of our volatile metabolites data and the role of menthol in the immune …
Computational Modelling Of Aqueous Humor Dynamics And Drug Delivery For Intraocular Pressure Control In Glaucoma, Jabia Mostofa Chowdhury
Computational Modelling Of Aqueous Humor Dynamics And Drug Delivery For Intraocular Pressure Control In Glaucoma, Jabia Mostofa Chowdhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
We present a computational model of sustained delivery of ocular pressure-lowering drugs (Timolol Maleate) to the anterior segment of the eye using drug infused contact lens. Ocular structures, aqueous humor flow and their interaction were modeled as linearly elastic solids, viscous fluid flow and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) respectively in COMSOL 5.3 as axisymmetric models. Timolol distribution from contact lens was modeled as transport of diluted species coupled with the flow dynamics (FSI velocity coupled). Aqueous humor production in the ciliary body was simulated as an inlet with a mass flow rate of 5e-8 kg/s. Over a 10-hour duration, drug transport …
Conceptual Structures Of Vietnamese Emotions, Hien T. Tran
Conceptual Structures Of Vietnamese Emotions, Hien T. Tran
Linguistics ETDs
ABSTRACT
This dissertation presents a comparative study of the metaphoric and metonymic systems underlying the conceptualizations of two emotions, anger and sadness, in Vietnamese, American English, and Chinese. The analytic and theoretical approach is based on previous studies by Lakoff and Kövecses (1987), Kövecses (1988), Barcelona (1986), King (1989) and Yu (1995). The research presented here on emotion concepts reveals cultural variation and potential universals in the conceptualization of emotions. These results support the “Cultural Embodied Prototype” view proposed by Kövecses (2004:14) which proposes that conceptualizations of human emotions is motivated by both physiological embodied experiences (physiological embodiment) and the …
Bioengineering Of An In Vitro Microphysiological Human Alveolar Model, Ayesha Arefin
Bioengineering Of An In Vitro Microphysiological Human Alveolar Model, Ayesha Arefin
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Drugs tested on animal models do not always produce the same results in humans; a reliable in vitro lung model can bridge the divide between the two. Because the alveolus is a target for several drugs, an alveolar model can be a platform for both designing drugs and studying lung diseases. A model should allow for gas exchange, growth of primary alveolar epithelial cells, extracellular matrix production, and have similar mechanical properties to alveoli, creating an environment conducive to normal metabolic activity and cellular responses. Existing artificial alveolar models that use polymeric membranes to sustain lung cells are limited by …

Dog ownership is popular worldwide, with most human-dog dyads forming successful attachment bonds. However, millions of dogs are surrendered to animal shelters annually, possibly due to mismatches between owner expectations and the realities of dog ownership. The aim of the current study was to explore the benefits and challenges people expect from dog ownership and how these expectations vary with previous ownership history. An Australian-wide sample of 3465 prospective adopters completed a self-administered online questionnaire about the physical, mental and psychosocial health benefits and challenges they associated with dog ownership. Among the potential benefits, respondents expected increased walking (89%), happiness …
Artificial Gravity As A Countermeasure To The Cardiovascular Deconditioning Of Spaceflight: Gender Perspectives, Joyce M. Evans, Charles F. Knapp, Nandu Goswami
Artificial Gravity As A Countermeasure To The Cardiovascular Deconditioning Of Spaceflight: Gender Perspectives, Joyce M. Evans, Charles F. Knapp, Nandu Goswami
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Space flight-induced physiological deconditioning resulting from decreased gravitational input, decreased plasma volume, and disruption of regulatory mechanisms is a significant problem in returning astronauts as well as in normal aging. Here we review effects of a promising countermeasure on cardiovascular systems of healthy men and women undergoing Earth-based models of space-flight. This countermeasure is produced by a centrifuge and called artificial gravity (AG). Numerous studies have determined that AG improves orthostatic tolerance (as assessed by various protocols) of healthy ambulatory men, of men deconditioned by bed rest or by immersion (both wet and dry) and, in one case, following spaceflight. …

Adaptive Spaceship Cockpit Architecture, Ondřej Doule
Adaptive Spaceship Cockpit Architecture, Ondřej Doule
Theses and Dissertations
This research project is focused on a system design theory and practice of the most complex environment that a human-system architect can ever encounter. It is the environment of the spaceship cockpit or cabin that is affected by forces of propulsion and gravity accelerations and freefall while the direction and magnitude of gravity change during the flight. Furthermore, the hyperbaric, restrictive environment of Intra Vehicular Activity spacesuit adds another layer of complexity. In off-nominal or emergency situations, these environmental effects combine, which results in specific human-system interaction requirements. Considering human-system integration requirements on safety, comfort and efficiency of communication between …

Objectives: Though previous research has indicated that language brokering can be stressful, the findings are mixed, pointing to potential moderators of the association. Guided by an ecological perspective, we examined the role of individual, family, and environmental factors in Mexican American adolescents’ acute cortisol responses to language brokering. Method: The study consisted of 46 Mexican American adolescents recruited around a metropolitan city in Central Texas. Participants translated a difficult medical document from English to Spanish for their parents, followed by an arithmetic task (modeled after the Trier Social Stress Test [TSST]). Participants’ perceptions (perceived efficacy and parental dependence), parental hostility, …

Developmental Steps For A Functional Three-Dimensional Cell Culture System For The Study Of Asymmetrical Division Of Neural Stem Cells, Martina Zamponi
Developmental Steps For A Functional Three-Dimensional Cell Culture System For The Study Of Asymmetrical Division Of Neural Stem Cells, Martina Zamponi
Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Stem cells are a cell type present during and following development, which possess self- renewal properties, as well as the ability to differentiate into specific cells. Asymmetrical division is the cellular process that allows stem cells to produce one differentiated and one un-differentiated daughter cell during the same mitotic event. Insights in the molecular mechanisms of such process are minimal, due to the absence of effective methods for its targeted study. Currently, traditional methods of investigation include monolayer cell culture and animal models. The first poses structural limitations to the accurate representation of human tissue and cell structures, while animal …

Assessment Of Quality Of Experience (Qoe) Of Image Compression In Social Cloud Computing, Ali L Asif, H He, Ai Khan, M Shafiq
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Image posting and sharing on the social media clouds is a common activity of end users. During the uploading of an image, social media cloud automatically compresses the original image to reduce resolution and file size to save storage and provides service to speed up content loading in the web page. Image quality degradation on social media clouds decreases the user satisfaction level. Quality of Experience (QoE) experiment was conducted for assessing the end user’s satisfaction for image compression. During the experiment, four popular social media clouds were selected for 4 sample image hosting and images were captured with Canon …
Are Humans Natural? Exploring Relational Values In The Human-Nature Relationship In An Evolutionary Context, Nathan Ruhl
Are Humans Natural? Exploring Relational Values In The Human-Nature Relationship In An Evolutionary Context, Nathan Ruhl
Open Educational Resources
This learning module is a three-part series of learning activities focused around the following themes:
- The words “nature” and “natural” mean different things to different people;
- Humans and other species both effect and are affected by the environment;
- Most “human-traits” are not unique to humans and are adaptive traits shared by other species.
The larger goal of this set of learning activities is to promote a holistic/equalistic view of the human-environment relationship by leveraging humanistic content to support learning goals in both introductory post-secondary courses and general education courses (secondary or post-secondary) in the biological sciences. The learning activities in …
Study Of The Impact Of Team Morale On Construction Project Performance, Adrian Gerard Saldanha
Study Of The Impact Of Team Morale On Construction Project Performance, Adrian Gerard Saldanha
Dissertations and Theses
The moral of project teams is an important factor when considering the performance of project teams(Dye, 2011) (Yang, Liu, & Fellows, 2010). Morale can be influenced and project leadership has an important role to play in how people work in teams (Gauvreau & Belout, 2004). In research studying the performance of teams working on technology projects, it was learned that an organizational work environment that satisfies the personal and professional needs of individuals has a strong effect on team cooperation and drives team performance (Thamhain, 2004). In a study performed by the US military (Mael & Alderks, 1993), it was …

Design And Development Of A Linear Jawed Gripper For Unstructured Environments, Y Shrihari Upadhyaya
Design And Development Of A Linear Jawed Gripper For Unstructured Environments, Y Shrihari Upadhyaya
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
Today’s manufacturers aim to reduce costs, increase agility, and automate processes - including high-mix, labour intensive ones. Grippers are used to automate most processes and are thus required to be precise, have fast cycle times, and have the capacity to lift heavy loads. This paper discusses the ways to improve automated processes by implementing linear jawed grippers as a replacement for the current parallelogram grippers. Using various tools for CAD, analysis and simulation, an optimized linear jawed gripper has been designed. In order to provide precision and speed, an innovative feedback system has also been discussed using a combination of …

Comparison Of Autonomic Control Of Blood Pressure During Standing And Artificial Gravity Induced Via Short-Arm Human Centrifuge, Ajay K. Verma, Da Xu, Michelle Bruner, Amanmeet Garg, Nandu Goswami, Andrew P. Blaber, Kouhyar Tavakolian
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Autonomic control of blood pressure is essential toward maintenance of cerebral perfusion during standing, failure of which could lead to fainting. Long-term exposure to microgravity deteriorates autonomic control of blood pressure. Consequently, astronauts experience orthostatic intolerance on their return to gravitational environment. Ground-based studies suggest sporadic training in artificial hypergravity can mitigate spaceflight deconditioning. In this regard, short-arm human centrifuge (SAHC), capable of creating artificial hypergravity of different g-loads, provides an auspicious training tool. Here, we compare autonomic control of blood pressure during centrifugation creating 1-g and 2-g at feet with standing in natural gravity. Continuous blood pressure was acquired …

Reimagining Icarus: Ethics, Law And Policy Considerations For Commercial Human Spaceflight, Sara M. Langston
Reimagining Icarus: Ethics, Law And Policy Considerations For Commercial Human Spaceflight, Sara M. Langston
Publications
Commercial human spaceflight presents an area for engaging novel human activity and objectives, to include space exploration, entertainment, transportation and extraterrestrial resource acquisition. The inherent dangers and lack of scientific and medical certainty involved however raise interrelated questions of ethics, bioethics, law and public policy. This is particularly the case with spaceflight participant (SFP) screening, selection, and commercial human spaceflight activities where regulations are currently silent or lacking. In the absence of established law, ethics can play an important role by informing industry standards, policies and best practices. Understanding the fundamental ethical values at stake in the application of new …
Steve Reich's ‘Music For 18 Musicians’ As A Soundscape Composition, Jesse Budel
Steve Reich's ‘Music For 18 Musicians’ As A Soundscape Composition, Jesse Budel
Directions of New Music
Over the past half century, there has been much research into the acoustic qualities of soundscapes from a variety of perspectives: the humanities and social sciences as per the ‘acoustic ecology’ movement (established by Schafer, Truax, and Westerkamp et al.), and more recently the environmental science and ecology as per ‘soundscape ecology’ (established by Farina, Pijanowski, and Krause, et al.). Collectively, these disciplines provide diverse methods for engagement with analysis of acoustic environments. Simultaneous to the rise of the acoustic ecology movement in the 1970s (marked by the publication of Schafer’s ‘The Tuning of the World (1974)), the composition of …
Hematological Changes In Response To A Drastic Increase In Training Volume In Recreational Cyclists, Jessie Axsom
Hematological Changes In Response To A Drastic Increase In Training Volume In Recreational Cyclists, Jessie Axsom
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Changes in blood volume contribute to improvement in oxygen utilization (VO2max) with chronic endurance exercise training. Although hematological changes resulting from long-term endurance training have been well documented, it has not been well established whether an increased volume of endurance training preferentially affects plasma volume or red blood cell volume. To answer this question, I studied seven female and four male recreational cyclists before and after exposure to drastic increases (632%) in training volume. Following the 10-week training period, the mean hematocrit (Hct) of the 11 subjects who completed the study significantly (p0.05) correlated with the change in self-reported weekly …

Earth Turning: Ecosomatic Exploration And Social Action Community Art Option 3, Community Engagement Project, Mollie Malia Matteson
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Ecopsychology emerged to redress harm caused by a long dominant western worldview that humans are separate from nature. Somatic psychology is premised on the unity of body and mind, which western thought also divided for centuries. The emerging field of ecosomatics supports embodied humans in relationship to the body of Earth. When utilized in psychotherapy, expressive arts, and social action-oriented community art, ecosomatic approaches facilitate an understanding of the continuity between inner and outer nature.
A one-day community workshop in ecosomatic practice and nature-based expressive arts was offered to explore embodied dialogue with nature. The workshop involved time outdoors as …
Chronic Nerve Interfacing Utilizing Graft-Embedded Regenerative Macro-Sieve Electrodes, Amrita Nishtala
Chronic Nerve Interfacing Utilizing Graft-Embedded Regenerative Macro-Sieve Electrodes, Amrita Nishtala
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Custom-designed macro-sieve electrodes represent a novel means of facilitating chronic high specificity nerve stimulation needed to control distal nerve musculature and restore sensorimotor function. Implantation of these electrodes requires the transection of the nerve, which has shown to disrupt muscle fiber distribution. This present study assesses the feasibility of implementing these electrodes in an end-to-side nerve graft. The macro-sieve electrodes were fabricated and micro-surgically implanted into 3.2 cm nerve autografts harvested from the sciatic nerve of 12 male Lewis rats. Electrode-enabled nerve grafts were micro-surgically implanted in an end-to-side manner into donor rat sciatic nerves without the need for a …
