The Effect Of Sedentary Behavior On Arterial Stiffness In Healthy And Metabolic Syndrome Women, Annajita A. Rubio, Ariel Gomez, Klaudia Szych, Matthew A. Barlow
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Overweight and obese physical stature has been associated with increased endothelial dysfunction and the development of cardiovascular disease. This dysfunction may further be progressed as this population develops Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes. To understand the mechanisms responsible for the vascular dysfunction in the Metabolic Syndrome participants in our research study, we aimed to identify if there is a difference in the Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) as an effective measurement of peripheral arterial stiffness. Previous studies show that adults with higher superficial femoral artery stiffness experienced greater perceived fatigue and thus are less likely to continue daily physical activity. PURPOSE: …
Fairness At A Price: Protecting The Integrity Of Athletic Competitions At The Expense Of Female Athletes, Annie Bach Yen Nguyen
Fairness At A Price: Protecting The Integrity Of Athletic Competitions At The Expense Of Female Athletes, Annie Bach Yen Nguyen
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Ever since women were allowed to compete in the Olympics, they have been subjected to some form of gender verification. Initially, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) required female athletes to present certificates from their doctors confirming that they were in fact women. In 1966, the IOC and the IAAF “decided they couldn’t trust individual nations to certify femininity, and instead implemented a mandatory genital check of every woman competing at international games.” This process was dubbed the “nude parades”. In response to the overwhelming disapproval of such examination, the IOC and IAAF began implementing …
Fragmented Bodies, Legal Privilege, And Commodification In Science And Medicine, Melissa M. Perry
Fragmented Bodies, Legal Privilege, And Commodification In Science And Medicine, Melissa M. Perry
Maine Law Review
Science and medicine have long possessed a culturally distinct status in American society; however, in the contemporary context of corporate biotechnology and managed health care, this cultural authority has begun to appear to many as increasingly threatening. Science and medicine often are criticized for having become businesses. This recognition becomes more daunting when one considers that a primary object of entrepreneurial pursuits in science and medicine is the commodification of the human body. That is, many scientific and medical practices effectively reduce the body to an object defined by its exchange value in the marketplace. Given the rapid advances of …

Polysaccharide-Mediated Synthesis Of Melanins From Serotonin And Other 5-Hydroxy Indoles, Koen Vercruysse, Astiney Clark, Noor Alattas, Dylan Brooks, Nafisa Hamza, Margaret Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
Aim: As a continuation of our research on the melanin formation from catecholamines, we studied the polysaccharide-mediated oxidation of serotonin and other 5-hydroxy indoles into melanin-like materials. As for the catecholamines, we observed that many polysaccharides promote the oxidation of such compounds, particularly in the presence of Cu2+. Methodology: The reactions were monitored using reverse phase-HPLC and size-exclusion chromatography techniques. Melanin-like materials were purified through dialysis and characterized using UV-Vis and Fourier transform IR spectroscopic techniques. Results: One such material, synthesized from chondroitin sulfate type A and serotonin in the presence of Cu2+ was found to affect …
Analysis For Science Librarians Of The 2017 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: The Life And Work Of Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, And Michael W. Young, Neyda V. Gilman
Library Scholarship
Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young are the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Laureates, having earned the award for their “discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.” They identified the genes involved in the circadian rhythm mechanism and explained how all of the different pieces of the mechanism work together. These discoveries explain how the biological cycles of Earth’s organisms correspond to the rotation of the planet, acting as an inner clock. Their research also provides further opportunities to continue learning about the role of circadian rhythm and its relationship to human health (Nobelprize.org …
Mathematical Modeling Of Nanoparticle Biodistribution, Prashant Dogra
Mathematical Modeling Of Nanoparticle Biodistribution, Prashant Dogra
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The prospects of nanoparticle-based drug delivery and imaging have been hindered by insufficient understanding of the effects of nanoparticle physicochemical properties on their in vivo disposition. Here, we present an integrative mathematical modeling and in vivo imaging approach to quantify the relationship between nanoparticle physicochemical properties, namely, size, surface charge, and surface chemistry, on their in vivo disposition kinetics in healthy rats. We developed simple master equations in closed-form to accurately represent the time-dependent concentration of nanoparticles in different regions of the body and obtain functional relationships for predictive purpose to support rational design of nanomedicine. We further used …

The Effects Of Preexisting Disease Or Illness On Circadian Rhythm, Christina Ayvas
The Effects Of Preexisting Disease Or Illness On Circadian Rhythm, Christina Ayvas
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
This thesis will investigate the effect that Alzheimer’s disease, blindness, cancer, and Parkinson’s disease have on natural circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the biological cycles within our bodies that repeat themselves which can be observed in correspondence to a relative time frame of 24 hours. These cycles can be influenced by a wide variety of factors, both internal and external, such as the daily transitions between daylight and nightfall, an individual's diet or hunger tendencies, and the daily number of hours of sleep that a person gets. Should any of these cycles become disrupted, the result may be a deterioration …

Fact Vs. Fiction: Uncovering The Experiences Of Homeless/Street Youths' Involvement In Survival Sex, Amber R. Mcdonald
Fact Vs. Fiction: Uncovering The Experiences Of Homeless/Street Youths' Involvement In Survival Sex, Amber R. Mcdonald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Youth involvement in trading/selling sex has become of concern for policy makers, scholars, and the general public in recent years (Cecchet & Thorburn, 2014; Hossain, et al, 2010; Pub L No. 106-386; Reid & Piquero, 2013; Sapiro, Johnson, Postmus, & Simmel, 2016; Shared Hope International, 2015). The behavior of trading/selling sex is defined dichotomously within the literature. One body of literature, employs the term "survival sex" when empirical work focuses on trading/selling sex among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) identified individuals or youth that are homeless (Greene, Ennett & Ringwalt,1999; Halcon & Lifson, 2004; Walls & Bell, 2011). …

Investigating The Effects Of Antibiotics Perturbation On Lactobacillus Species Metabolomics Profiles, Sophia Lee, Kundi Yang, Jiangjiang (Chris) Zhu
Summer Research
Our gut microbiota contains a vast array of cells that influence human physiology, metabolism, nutrition and immune function. Lactobacillus is a group of Gram-positive, lactic acid bacteria that is naturally present in the human gastrointestinal tract. Some species are probiotics that provide beneficial health effects to humans. Many studies have investigated and noted their various health benefits to their human host, including prevention of certain diseases such as colon cancer, breaking down of food, and absorption of nutrients. Maintaining the balance of our normal flora is essential - even small perturbations to the microbiota can have significant health effects. It …
Towards A Physio-Cognitive Model Of Slow-Breathing, Chris Dancy
Towards A Physio-Cognitive Model Of Slow-Breathing, Chris Dancy
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
How may controlled breathing be beneficial, or detrimental to behavior? Computational process models are useful to specify the potential mechanisms that lead to behavioral adaptation during different breathing exercises. We present a physio-cognitive model of slow breathing implemented within a hybrid cognitive architecture, ACT-R/Φ. Comparisons to data from an experiment indicate that the physiological mechanisms are operating in a manner that is consistent with actual human function. The presented computational model provides predictions of ways that controlled breathing interacts with mechanisms of arousal to mediate cognitive behavior. The increasing use of breathing techniques to counteract effects of stressors makes it …

Towards A Physio-Cognitive Model Of The Exploration Exploitation Trade-Off., David M. Schwartz, Christopher L. Dancy
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
Managing the exploration vs exploitation trade-off is an important part of our everyday lives. It occurs in minor decisions such as choosing what music to listen to as well as major decisions, such as picking a research direction to pursue. The dilemma is the same despite the context: does one exploit the environment, using current knowledge to acquire a satisfactory solution, or explore other options and potentially find a better answer. An accurate cognitive model must be able to handle this trade-off because of the importance it plays in our lives. We are developing physio-cognitive models to better understand how …
The Investigation Of Lactoferrin Nitration: Quantification, Function, And Inhibition, Amani Yahya Alhalwani
The Investigation Of Lactoferrin Nitration: Quantification, Function, And Inhibition, Amani Yahya Alhalwani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein of molecular mass ca. 80 kDa that is predominantly found in mammalian body fluids. Lactoferrin is a multifunctional protein that has a wide range of properties such as antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic functions. Tyrosine residues in the protein play a part in many lactoferrin functions. Protein tyrosine nitration modification represents an oxidative and nitrosative stress process which can be caused by the exposure of proteins to oxidants from air pollution or disease. Understanding the way nitrated lactoferrin interacts with the biochemical environment of the body is thus important to the broader goal of …
Bionic Wings, Jacob Bruggeman
Bionic Wings, Jacob Bruggeman
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
In an infinite expanse such as the one we inhabit, we are mere mites in the soil, “creatures weak and fragile, small and helpless, finite and mortal” (Tucker, First Things, online). Our eyes always fixed upon the future, blooming ad infinitum, we will “run faster,” “stretch” ourselves farther, yet never fail to fall back to the ground. Our hands in the dirt, our fingers moving upon blades of grass, we still hunger for a future of our own design. We are born without wings and bogged down by both our human history and our only true human birthright: to fail, …

Demographic Variations In Achievement Goal Orientations Among Prisoners On Formal And Vocational Training In Uganda, Irene Aheisibwe, Aloysius Rukundo
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Educating Prisoners has become a worldwide concern as a measure that can save community costs associated with criminal behavior. In Uganda, there is low participation in formal and vocational training among prisoners which can be associated with lack of knowledge on achievement goal orientations. This is central for adequate implementation of academic and vocational education in prisons, otherwise it may lead to wasted Government initiative and commitment on education as a rehabilitation strategy for prisoners. The purpose of the study was to assess demographic variations in achievement goal orientations among prisoners on formal and vocational training in Uganda.

Control Of Salmonella Virulence By Microbiota-Derived And Dietary Fatty Acids, Zhenrun J. Zhang
Control Of Salmonella Virulence By Microbiota-Derived And Dietary Fatty Acids, Zhenrun J. Zhang
Student Theses and Dissertations
The intestinal microbiota plays critical roles in human physiology and diseases. While recent research has revealed many mechanisms by which gut microbiota influences host immunity to defend against invading pathogens, how microbiota directly antagonizes pathogen virulence is less studied. In particular, gut microbiota produces large amounts and varieties of small molecules that may impact both host immunity and pathogen virulence. In this thesis, I describe how fatty acids, derived from both gut microbiota and diet, contribute to attenuation of virulence of enteric pathogen Salmonella. In Chapter 1, I review how dietary and microbiota metabolites affect different aspects of host-microbe interactions. …
Learning Opportunities And Challenges Of Sensor-Enabled Intelligent Tutoring Systems On Mobile Platforms: Benchmarking The Reliability Of Mobile Sensors To Track Human Physiological Signals And Behaviors To Enhance Tablet-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Luis Vazquez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Desktop-based intelligent tutoring systems have existed for many decades, but the advancement of mobile computing technologies has sparked interest in developing mobile intelligent tutoring systems (mITS). Personalized mITS are applicable to not only stand-alone and client-server systems but also cloud systems possibly leveraging big data. Device-based sensors enable even greater personalization through capture of physiological signals during periods of student study. However, personalizing mITS to individual students faces challenges. The Achilles heel of personalization is the feasibility and reliability of these sensors to accurately capture physiological signals and behavior measures. This research reviews feasibility and benchmarks reliability of basic mobile …

Simultaneous Use Of Physiological Sensors For A Neuromarketing Task, Charles Descheneaux
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physiological measurements have become more popular in Psychological research over the past ten years. These advancements allowed different objective sensors to become another measurement tool in a scientific arsenal of collecting data. Traditionally, performance and after task subjective measures have been used for most studies in Psychological research. With the opportunity to use these subjective measures along with objective measures, more data can be collected during research and therefore potentially produce better quality conclusions. Eye Tracking (ET), functional near infrared (fNIR), transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD), electrocardiogram (EKG) and the electroencephalogram (EEG) have shown great promise in their ability to produce …
