Crafting An Empire: The Hereke Factory Campus (1842-1914), Didem Yavuz Aug 2018

Crafting An Empire: The Hereke Factory Campus (1842-1914), Didem Yavuz

Dissertations

One of the starkest examples of the Ottoman Empire's new modernity was the fabrics and carpet model factory founded at Hereke in 1842. This dissertation focuses on the evolving conditions and social developments that took place over seventy-two years of production at Hereke, and discuss that the factory represented a microcosm of the Empire's wider industrial labor history. Hereke was used as a lens through which to explore a range of themes that, taken together, highlight the lifestyles of the early Ottoman workforce and its industrial relations: labor management, industrial action, child labor, class, gender, housing, education, clothing fashion, the …

A Citation Study Of Andrews University Theological Seminary Dissertations, Cynthia Mae Helms, Bernard Helms

Journal of Adventist Libraries and Archives

Citations found in Theological Seminary Ph.D./Th.D. dissertations completed between 2006 and 2010 at Andrews University were analyzed to determine how much of the cited resources were held by the library, what types of resources were used, and their age. The study showed that 2/3 of the citations were books and almost 1/3 were periodicals, 84% of the citations were held by James White Library, and the majority of the citations were published within 60 years of the dissertations’ completion dates. The study also revealed that five of the 27 most frequently cited periodicals were included in ranked lists of three …

Consuming Victory: American Women And The Politics Of Food Rationing During World War Ii, Kelly Cantrell Aug 2018

Consuming Victory: American Women And The Politics Of Food Rationing During World War Ii, Kelly Cantrell

Dissertations

Life on the home front formed the most ubiquitous American experience during World War II. Americans in the early 1940s found themselves caught in a rapidly evolving world, which wrought changes both great and small on their daily lives. This project explores women’s responses to some of that change. The federal government created wartime agencies to control and direct most elements of daily life from public opinion, to factory production, to employment practices, to family food procurement. The Office of Price Administration was charged with creating a food rationing program to insure steady availability of foodstuffs at home while suppling …

Psychotropic Pharmacogenomic Testing: Effects On Provider Prescribing Patterns And Phq-9 Depression Screening Scores In A Rural Michigan Family Practice, Nicole Madalinski

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The rate of depression across the United States is on the rise with over 16.2 million people experiencing a depressive episode per year (Siu & and the US Preventive Services Task Force [USPSTF], 2016). Medications to treat depression typically take weeks or months to see clinical improvement (Uphold & Graham, 2013). If the medication is not effective, a dose or medication change may occur, lengthening the time spent in a depressive state. This scholarly project retrospectively analyzed charts at a rural primary care practice that implemented GeneSight® psychotropic pharmacogenomic testing for treatment resistant depression. This project sought to understand if …

Liquid-Vapor Imaging In Fuel Sprays Using Lifetime-Filtered Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Alber Douglawi Aug 2018

Liquid-Vapor Imaging In Fuel Sprays Using Lifetime-Filtered Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Alber Douglawi

Open Access Theses

Many performance parameters in combustion systems are heavily dependent on the fuel injection process. Liquid-vapor imaging in spray applications has proven to be difficult because of the dominance of the liquid phase signal due to its higher number density. This work addresses this issue by employing temporal filtering in Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) imaging. Temporal filtering takes advantage of the fact that although the vapor signal tends to be weaker, its fluorescence signal persists longer than the liquid signal under the same conditions. An experimental setup was designed with the capability to supply a two-phase flow in a controlled environment …

Secular Discourse In Postcolonial West African Narratives: Problems And Perspectives: A Comparative Study, Malick Coly

Open Access Dissertations

The making of modern African nations and their attendant secularistic establishment have not only altered traditional socio-political structures, this shift has equally affected the relations between individuals as well as communities. In the process leading to modern sociocultural transformations, tensions and discourse have arisen. Toyin Falola’s Violence in Nigeria: Crisis of Religious Politics and Secular Ideologies, and Ousman Murzik Kobo’s Unveiling Modernity in Twentieth-Century West African Islamic Reforms highlight respectively the political and religious divide in post-Independence Nigeria and the impact of Islamic reform in Ghana and Burkina Faso. These two historical studies show the complexity of modern West African …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Historic instrumental weather observations, made on land or at sea from as early as the 17th century (e.g., Camuffo etal., 2010), are integral to extending our understanding of the decadal and centennial variations of Earth’s climate and forcomparison with paleo-proxy data. The potential of such data is shown to best effect when used in dynamical 4D globalreanalyses to reconstruct climate patterns and fluctuations over more than 250 years, improving climate projections and con-tributing to climate change detection and attribution studies. This longer temporal dimension permits the resolution of morerealizations of decadal to multi-decadal climate variations (Bengtsson et al., 2007). The …

The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 2: Medieval Meets Medievalism, Jan M. Ziolkowski Jul 2018

The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 2: Medieval Meets Medievalism, Jan M. Ziolkowski

Juggling for Mary

This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life.

Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before …

Complete Bosoms, Incomplete Men: Reading Abstinence In Measure For Measure, Joseph Makuc Jul 2018

Complete Bosoms, Incomplete Men: Reading Abstinence In Measure For Measure, Joseph Makuc

English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows

Measure for Measure has often been called one of Shakespeare’s problem plays, and as recent productions show, Measure’s problems — including sexual coercion and governmental corruption — resonate with readers and audiences today. Recent scholarship has examined sexual abstinence in Measure for Measure in terms of its historical economic and religious context, arguing that protagonist Isabella represents a radical break from merchant economics by opting out of the sexual economy. However, Angelo and the Duke, the play's other central characters, also make claims about the values of abstinence, and those claims are at odds with Isabella's claims. My research will …

Incorporating Spiritual Analysis: A Review Of Jing Li, Rebecca Oxford And Tom Culham’S Toward A Spiritual Research Paradigm, Stephanie Fitzsimmons

The Qualitative Report

Toward a Spiritual Research Paradigm is one of those books that forces readers to push the boundaries beyond the “traditional paradigms” and then push a little bit further. I found this book spoke to me on a primal level helping to bridge connections between what I have been taught so far, my personal experiences and what is in my spiritual life. Throughout reading the book, I noticed my perspectives expanded beyond what I expected and I found myself thinking of applications for my current and possibly even future studies.

Christians And Jerusalem In The Fourth Century Ce: A Study Of Eusebius Of Caesarea, Cyril Of Jerusalem, And The Bordeaux Pilgrim, Stephen David Green

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis addresses Constantine's developments of the Roman province of Palaestina. It analyzes two important Christian bishops, Eusebius of Caesarea and Cyril of Jerusalem, and one nameless Christian traveler, the Bordeaux pilgrim, to illuminate how fourth-century Christians understood these developments. This study examines the surviving writings of these Christian authors: the Bordeaux Itinerary, Cyril's Catechetical Lectures, and Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History, Onomasticon, Preparation of the Gospel, Proof of the Gospel, and the Life of Constantine, and the archaeological remains of several Constantinian basilicas to interpret their views of the imperial attentions that were being poured …

Anarchism On The Willamette: The Firebrand Newspaper And The Origins Of A Culturally American Anarchist Movement, 1895-1898, Alecia Jay Giombolini Jul 2018

Anarchism On The Willamette: The Firebrand Newspaper And The Origins Of A Culturally American Anarchist Movement, 1895-1898, Alecia Jay Giombolini

Dissertations and Theses

The Firebrand was an anarchist communist newspaper that was printed in Portland, Oregon from January 1895 to September 1897. The newspaper was a central catalyst behind the formation of the culturally American anarchist movement, a movement whose vital role in shaping radicalism in the United States during the Progressive Era has largely been ignored by historians. The central argument of this thesis is that the Firebrand publishers' experiences in Gilded Age Portland shaped the content and the format of the newspaper and led to the development of a new, uniquely American expression of anarchism.

Anarchism was developed in response to …

Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez Jul 2018

Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present research corroborates K. Sullivan's initial results as stated in her epoch making study about the effectiveness of teaching elementary calculus using Robinson's non standard approach. Our research added to her results related to the teaching of the elementary integral, with similar positive results. In this essay we propose a definition of the notion of cognitive advantage mentioned by Sullivan in expressing the dramatic differences in understanding of students of non standard calculus as opposed to those of its standard counterpart. Our proposal is based on ideas of Kitcher and Kuhn and allows us to better understand the didactics …

Lawyers In Africa: Brokers Of The State, Intermediaries Of Globalization - A Case Study Of The "Africa" Bar In Paris, Sara Dezalay

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Africa is the "Global Economy's Last Frontier"! Images of the African continent as a boon of mineral riches, and a new legal Far West pervade media and scholarly accounts. Yet, these images tend to reflect the protracted political and development dependency of African states, with lawyers involved in corporate dealings on the continent either denounced as mercenaries at the service of neo-colonial "looting" or idealized as missionaries of the rule of law. This article suggests a research strategy that moves away from these ideological and political accounts. It uses lawyers' trajectories and professional strategies as an entry-point to reglobalize the …

Institutional Development And Foreign Banks In Chile, Brian Du, Alejandro Serrano, Andre Vianna Jul 2018

Institutional Development And Foreign Banks In Chile, Brian Du, Alejandro Serrano, Andre Vianna

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the effects of foreign banks on developing countries’ bank performance. We study this relationship from a different perspective by focusing on Chile, an emerging market with strong institutions. The results from dynamic panel regressions on hand-collected financial statement data from 2005 to 2014 indicate that foreign banks improve banking sector competitiveness, reduce the volatility of returns, and increase commercial and consumption loans. The overall evidence suggests that, in the presence of solid institutions, foreign banks improve the banking sector in developing countries. Therefore, public policies on foreign banks should be more effective when accompanied by advances in …

Broadening The Focus: Women's Voices In The New Journalism, Mary C. Wacker Jul 2018

Broadening The Focus: Women's Voices In The New Journalism, Mary C. Wacker

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The New Journalism Movement chronicled a decade of social turbulence in America by breaking the rules of traditional journalism and embracing narrative elements in the writing and publication of literary nonfiction. The magazine publishing industry was controlled by men, and the history of this transitional time in journalism has been chronicled by men, neglecting to recognize the significant contributions of women working in their midst. This study shines a light on the historical narrative that defines our understanding of the significance and key contributors to the New Journalism Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. To better understand the …
