Education On Fall Prevention To Improve Self-Efficacy Of Nursing Staff In Long Term Care: A Pilot Study, Mark D. Leverenz, Jennifer Lape Jan 2018

Education On Fall Prevention To Improve Self-Efficacy Of Nursing Staff In Long Term Care: A Pilot Study, Mark D. Leverenz, Jennifer Lape

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Fall prevention is an ongoing concern in long-term care. Self-efficacy of nursing staff affects their performance levels related to fall prevention. Research concerning falls in the elderly is plentiful but there are no published studies addressing self-efficacy of nursing staff for implementation of fall prevention strategies in long-term care. The authors hypothesize that fall prevention education by an occupational therapist would be effective to improve the self-efficacy of nursing staff for implementation of fall prevention strategies and self-efficacy to prevent resident falls.

Method: A pre-test post-test pilot study implementing a five-week, multifaceted, fall prevention education course was conducted by …

The Impact Of Comorbidities On Diabetes And Hypertension Co-Management And Healthcare Expenditures, Rashmi Goyat Jan 2018

The Impact Of Comorbidities On Diabetes And Hypertension Co-Management And Healthcare Expenditures, Rashmi Goyat

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hypertension and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are among the most prevalent chronic conditions that often co-exist. Their co-existence increases the risk for comorbidities due to their impact on other organs such as blood vessels (leading to vasoconstriction/hypertension); brain (resulting in increased caloric intake); pancreas (decreased in beta-cell mass and glucose sensing); bone (possibly decreasing bone mass and strength). Occurrence of comorbidities can complicate the already complex care of diabetes and hypertension. It increases the risk of poor patient outcomes such as preventable hospitalization, adverse drug events and mortality. However, different comorbidities can affect the co-management differently. We identified the types …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

ABSTRACT

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most significant cause of death and severe disability following major trauma within Australia. Populations at risk include young adults aged 15 to 34, older adults, and military personnel. The main form of intervention following traumatic brain injury is rehabilitation, which places a large demand on the healthcare system. Telerehabilitation involves interventions delivered via telecommunication, which can improve accessibility and reduce this burden. There have been no systematic reviews conducted on the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in treating traumatic brain injury.

Purpose: To examine the effectiveness of telerehabilitation for adults with traumatic brain injury.

The Public's Perceptions Of A Cafe Within The Social And Physical Context Of A Residential Aged Care Facility, Alexa M. Andrew

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background: The publics’ perceptions of aged care residential facilities (ACRF’s) are generally derogatory in nature; with terms such as the ‘end of the road’ or ‘the last resort’ being used to describe them. The institutional design and nature of the traditional ‘nursing home’ has contributed to such a perception. However, more contemporary models of residential aged care facilities are encompassing design features which aim to enhance the physical and social environment and therefore the lives of the older people residing within them.

Purpose: This research reports on the inclusion of a café in the foyer of an aged care residential …

A Blueprint For A New American Trade Policy, Timothy Meyer, Ganesh Sitaraman Jan 2018

A Blueprint For A New American Trade Policy, Timothy Meyer, Ganesh Sitaraman

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we offer ten recommendations on how to reform American trade policy. These reforms respond to three fundamental challenges: (1) our trade bureaucracy is poorly designed to craft and execute a trade policy that pursues multiple important ends, including economic and national security; (2) the domestic process through which the United States makes trade agreements provides preferential access to certain interest groups (capital and corporations) but not others; and (3) U.S. trade policy has failed to grapple with the distributional consequences of trade liberalization. The first set of reforms addresses the domestic trade policymaking process. These include restructuring …

Binding Leviathan: Credible Commitment In An Authoritarian Regime, Roderick M. Hills Jr., Shitong Qiao Jan 2018

Binding Leviathan: Credible Commitment In An Authoritarian Regime, Roderick M. Hills Jr., Shitong Qiao

Faculty Scholarship

The problem of credible commitment dogs every government, whether democratic or authoritarian. Authoritarian bureaucracies face special credible commitment problems. Fear that local officials will build up a local power base has historically induced the leadership of China, Imperial and Communist alike, to frequently transfer local officials among subnational jurisdictions. Such frequent transfers undermine those officials’ capacity to make the credible commitments that officials with more stable tenure can make with ease. Moreover, authoritarian regimes discourage the development of independent institutions—like investor-owned banks or locally elected legislatures—that are independent from local executive officials and that might otherwise act as monitors and …

Britishers In Two Worlds: Maltese Immigrants In Detroit And Toronto, 1919-1960, Marc Anthony Sanko

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation looks at the immigration of Maltese laborers and their families to North America, chiefly Detroit and Toronto, between 1919 and 1960. While the Maltese migration followed similar patterns to other Southern European Catholic or skilled laborers in general, it is different in both their timing and colonial association. Most migrants came to North America in the late 19th and early 20th century, but the Maltese migration occurs largely after World War I and extends through the 1960s---the exact time frame of immigration restrictions imposed by both the governments of the United States and Canada. How the Maltese immigrants …

Using Artistic Process To Provide Outlets Of Communication, Understanding, And Healing To Improve The Well Being Of Selected Learners, Sarah Allen Jan 2018

Using Artistic Process To Provide Outlets Of Communication, Understanding, And Healing To Improve The Well Being Of Selected Learners, Sarah Allen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Public schools in America follow a carefully structured pattern tied directly to the societies and cultures from within. While this structure may create a positive and familiar learning environment for some, others who are unfamiliar with the societal and cultural norms within public school structures, may be left behind. Some learners have simple language barriers that exclude them from activities as well as others during the school day; some choose silence out of fear or embarrassment from unknown circumstances; while others are labeled as Special Education and are not able to speak to others verbally as a "normal" child would. …

Mathematical Epidemiology Goes To College, Meredith L. Greer, Ella Livesay Jan 2018

Mathematical Epidemiology Goes To College, Meredith L. Greer, Ella Livesay

All Faculty Scholarship

Every year waves of illnesses sweep through college campuses. This seems a natural result of sleep-deprived college students living, working, and playing together. Such outbreaks suggest questions: How many people will become infected? How can illnesses be contained? And crucially: How is mathematics involved? Mathematical epidemiology is the study of modeling diseases, often using compartmental models. We can use such models to learn from past outbreaks and investigate theoretical future outbreaks. In this article we present models that were inspired by two real-life outbreaks at a small residential college campus: H1N1 influenza in 2009 and, surprisingly, mumps in 2016.

Uav Modeling And Simulation At Normal And Abnormal Conditions, Mofetoluwa Fagbemi Jan 2018

Uav Modeling And Simulation At Normal And Abnormal Conditions, Mofetoluwa Fagbemi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main objective of this thesis is to develop new capabilities within the West Virginia University (WVU) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) simulation environment for the design and analysis of fault tolerant control laws on small sized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). An aerodynamic model for an electric powered UAV is developed using a vortex lattice method implemented within the computational design package Tornado. One-dimensional look-up tables are developed for the main stability and control derivatives, which are then used to calculate linear aerodynamic forces and moments for the nonlinear aircraft equations of motion. Flight data are used for model verification and …

Switching From Vitamin K Antagonists To Non-Vitamin K Oral Anticoagulants, Drug-Drug Interactions, And Health Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Atrial Fibrillation, Xue Feng Jan 2018

Switching From Vitamin K Antagonists To Non-Vitamin K Oral Anticoagulants, Drug-Drug Interactions, And Health Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Atrial Fibrillation, Xue Feng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

AF patients with a high risk of stroke are recommended to be treated with oral anticoagulants. Given that the recently available non--vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) received favorable or non-inferior efficacy and safety outcomes as compared with warfarin in the clinical trials, do not require frequent blood drawings, and have fewer drug-drug interactions (DDIs) than warfarin, working-age adults with AF are likely to switch from warfarin to NOACs. However, NOACs may still interact with many drugs that are known to increase the risk of bleeding, which may, in turn, elevate the economic and healthcare burden. The three aims of this …

5cs Of Managerial Leadership, Nalini Vadivelan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Twenty-first Century work life is portrayed by Hirschhorn (1997) as, new conditions of work [that] simultaneously pull us toward interdependence while pushing us toward estrangement. This is the new dialectic of the post-industrial age (p. 90). Dysfunctional families, socio-economic imbalances, and political instability caused by inapt leaders warrants to explore the impact of organizations on humanity. Great minds shape technology, innovation, research and development in these organizations. In return, big organizations drive the economy, politics, global warming, and business competition. Though many organizations invest in retention policies, employees have less loyalty, seek better compensation and work conditions. A concern for …

Servant-Leadership In Higher Education In Saudi Arabia, Areej Abdullah Shafai Jan 2018

Servant-Leadership In Higher Education In Saudi Arabia, Areej Abdullah Shafai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Saudi Arabia is seeking to create more effective leaders who meet the highest needs of individuals without using their authority to complete tasks. When looking deeply at servant leadership approach in higher education in Saudi Arabia, no known studies reflected what is really happening in practice with Saudi higher educational leaders in terms of defining and providing service. To better understand their leadership methods, it is significant to address their ways of employing authority in their day-to-day operations since power is tightly linked to leadership. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of servant-leadership as it applies …
