Improved Knowledge Following An Interprofessional Interpreter-Use Training, Celia Pechak, Connie Summers, Joanna Velasco
Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: Language barriers between patients and their healthcare providers are associated with negative outcomes. One approach to bridge language discordance is to offer interpreter-use training. This study’s purpose was to evaluate the effects of an interprofessional interpreter-use training on speech-language pathology (SLP), doctor of physical therapy (DPT), and master of occupational therapy (MOT) students. METHODS: Seventy-one students (18 SLP, 32 DPT, and 21 MOT) participated. Participants first completed an online module and then participated in a 3-hour interprofessional training consisting of lecture, role-play, and reflection. Each completed an interpreter-use knowledge assessment and the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) before …

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are treating an increasing number of bilingual clients, including those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). There is not a clear consensus among professionals regarding which language should be used in intervention when treating bilingual children with ASD. For this reason, it is imperative that SLPs ensure that they are making evidence-based decisions. This article will review the current research that examines bilingualism in children with ASD along with research focused on the language of intervention in bilingual children with ASD. We present a clinical scenario with common concerns presented to SLPs in their work settings and …
Chapter Three - Neural Correlates Of Sensory Abnormalities Across Developmental Disabilities, Garrett Cardon
Chapter Three - Neural Correlates Of Sensory Abnormalities Across Developmental Disabilities, Garrett Cardon
Faculty Publications
Abnormalities in sensory processing are a common feature of many developmental disabilities (DDs). Sensory dysfunction can contribute to deficits in brain maturation, as well as many vital functions. Unfortunately, while some patients with DD benefit from the currently available treatments for sensory dysfunction, many do not. Deficiencies in clinical practice surrounding sensory dysfunction may be related to lack of understanding of the neural mechanisms that underlie sensory abnormalities. Evidence of overlap in sensory symptoms between diagnoses suggests that there may be common neural mechanisms that mediate many aspects of sensory dysfunction. Thus, the current manuscript aims to review the extant …

Bioremediation of soil and groundwater sites contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons is known as a technically viable, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable technology. The purpose of this study is to investigate laboratory-scale bioremediation of petroleum-hydrocarbon contaminated soil through development of eight bioreactors, two bioreactors for each bioremediation mode. The modes were: (1)natural attenuation (NA); (2) biostimulation (BS) with oxygen and nutrients; (3) bioaugmentation (BA)with hydrocarbon degrading isolates; (4) a combination of biostimulation and bioaugmentation (BS-BA). Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) mass balance over the bioreactors showed about 2% of initial20,000 mg kg-soil−1TPH was removed by advection due to synthetic groundwater which was flow-ing …

Central Issues In The Protection Of Child Migrants, Mary Crock, Lenni Benson
Articles & Chapters
In this introductory chapter we identify themes that will be carried throughout the book. We begin in section 2 with a discussion of the human rights challenges presented by children on the move, posing questions that our contributors will address as they build on the themes we identify. This is followed by an examination ofobstacles that have been created to recognising child migrants as rights bearers. After setting out in section 4 a brief outline of the book’s structure, the chapter concludes with some comments on global initiatives that have been made to address the challenges associated with mass migration …

Whistleblowers - A Case Study In The Regulatory Cycle For Financial Services, Ronald H. Filler, Jerry W. Markham
Articles & Chapters
The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission were directed by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd-Frank) to create whistleblower protection programs that reward informants with massive bounty payments. At the time of its passage, the Dodd-Frank Act was a highly controversial statute that was passed on partisan lines. Its whistleblowing authority was one of its "most contentious provisions." As the result of the 2016 elections, the Dodd-Frank Act has come under renewed attack in Congress and by the new Trump administration. The stage is being setfor possible repeal ofmajor parts …

Extant research documents how siblings’ relationships develop from childhood through adolescence; yet, we know little about how sibling relationships change in young adulthood. Rooted in life course theory, this 2-wave longitudinal study investigated changes in sibling closeness and conflict, and the roles of life transitions and sibling similarity in life stage. Participants included 273 young adults from 180 families who reported on 340 sibling relationships (Time 1 M age = 24.45, SD = 5.33; Time 2 M age = 30.23, SD = 5.33). Multilevel repeated measures analysis of covariance indicated that, on average, siblings’ perceptions of conflict declined over the …

Implications Of The Second World War Us Refugee Resettlement Efforts Of Cecilia Razovsky And Varian Fry, Stacey Shaw
Faculty Publications
Despite anti-immigrant sentiment and severe restrictions on immigration to the us during the Second World War, many individuals and organisations fought to change attitudes and utilise the limited possibilities available. Cecilia Razovsky worked throughout this era to utilise quotas, increase awareness, and avoid negative attention that could hinder immigration. Varian Fry provided practical and legal assistance to refugees fleeing France until he was stopped by government officials. Razovsky has remained largely unknown but Varian Fry has drawn attention as an example of America’s best intentions. The Second World War is frequently invoked in contemporary discourse surrounding immigration and the stories …

Big data initiatives such as the Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis consortium (ENIGMA), combine data collected by independent studies worldwide to achieve more generalizable estimates of effect sizes and more reliable and reproducible outcomes. Such efforts require harmonized image analyses protocols to extract phenotypes consistently. This harmonization is particularly challenging for resting state fMRI due to the wide variability of acquisition protocols and scanner platforms; this leads to site-to-site variance in quality, resolution and temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR). An effective harmonization should provide optimal measures for data of different qualities. We developed a multi-site rsfMRI analysis pipeline to allow research …

Mental health treatments can be more effective when they align with the culture of the client and when therapists demonstrate multicultural competence. After providing a brief clinical example of cultural adaptations and therapist multicultural competence, we summarize relevant research findings in two meta-analyses. In the meta-analysis on the effectiveness of culturally adapted interventions, the average effect size across 99 studies was d = .50 (.35 after accounting for publication bias). In the second meta-analysis on 15 studies of therapist cultural competence, the results differed by rating source: Client-rated measures of therapist cultural competence correlated strongly (r = .38) with …

This paper aims to situate the transformation Brown Plant-Hopper (BPH) in broader issues of wetland rice socio-agroecosystem management in Java. By considering multispecies ethnography, this paper argues that the transformations of BPH from "unimportant insects" into "elite dangerous pests" is a consequence of the complexity of the interplay between biological processes and social processes in the context of managing biotic and abiotic elements in rice farming ecosystem. In this context, wetland rice ecosystems (sawah) is a unique social and biological space where multi-species actors interact with one another, directly or indirectly. Thus, the transformation of BPH insects is the result …

You Shall Not Enter The List: Inscriptional Practices And The Politics Of Deservingness In Indonesia, Hestu Prahara
Antropologi Indonesia
Indonesia’s first state-led community-driven development (CDD) began in 1990s with influential support by the World Bank. This paradigm sees the community not merely as an object but rather as an active subject of development. To ensure the shift at the paradigmatic level, a social engineering process known as community empowerment project was designed using monitoring instruments to guarantee inclusive development planning, prevent elite capture, and promote internal audit capacities. In this process, extensive use of bureaucratic instruments, e.g. paperwork, assessment forms, official stamps, program proposals/reports, and financial reports facilitated the formation of community participation. How did the use of documents …

Empire, Reform, And Internationalism : Britain And The Changing Politics Of Opium, 1875-1931, Simon John Case
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Throughout the nineteenth century, opium occupied a position of great significance within the British Empire, comprising by the 1870s as much as 17% of the total revenues of the British India Government. Opium also made up the greater part of British exports to China, a legacy of early-century market exploitation and highly favourable commercial treaties signed following two opium wars fought by the two countries. Between the emergence of an organised anti-opium movement in 1875 and the close of the final international Geneva Opium Conference of 1931, British opium policy experienced a complete transformation. The development of British responses to …

There is an unmet need for methods to help in the early detection of cervical precancer. Optical spectroscopy-based techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy, have shown great potential for diagnosis of different cancers, including cervical cancer. However, relatively few studies have been carried out on liquid-based cytology (LBC) pap test specimens and confounding factors, such as blood contamination, have been identified. Previous work reported a method to remove blood contamination before Raman spectroscopy by pretreatment of the slides with hydrogen peroxide. The aim of the present study was to extend this work to excessively bloody samples to see if these could …
