How School Counselors Cope With Student Suicide: A Qualitative Study, Sara Carpenter Nov 2018

How School Counselors Cope With Student Suicide: A Qualitative Study, Sara Carpenter

Dissertations

Recognizing that school counselors will likely encounter the tragedy of youth suicide, many counselor educator programs focus on identification of suicidal ideation and prevention, but the field of school counseling remains largely under-equipped regarding how to cope with the aftermath of student suicide. In an effort to expand the qualitative research within the profession on how best to educate, support, and implement suicide postvention strategies, there remained a need to explore the experience of the school counselor in the aftermath of such tragedy. This study addressed how school counselors who were trained in CACREP-accredited programs experience the response to student …

X-Search: An Open Access Interface For Cross-Cohort Exploration Of The National Sleep Research Resource, Licong Cui, Ningzhou Zeng, Matthew Kim, Remo Mueller, Emily Ruth Hankosky, Susan Redline, Guo-Qiang Zhang Nov 2018

X-Search: An Open Access Interface For Cross-Cohort Exploration Of The National Sleep Research Resource, Licong Cui, Ningzhou Zeng, Matthew Kim, Remo Mueller, Emily Ruth Hankosky, Susan Redline, Guo-Qiang Zhang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Background: The National Sleep Research Resource (NSRR) is a large-scale, openly shared, data repository of de-identified, highly curated clinical sleep data from multiple NIH-funded epidemiological studies. Although many data repositories allow users to browse their content, few support fine-grained, cross-cohort query and exploration at study-subject level. We introduce a cross-cohort query and exploration system, called X-search, to enable researchers to query patient cohort counts across a growing number of completed, NIH-funded studies in NSRR and explore the feasibility or likelihood of reusing the data for research studies.

Methods: X-search has been designed as a general framework with two loosely-coupled components: …

Blocking Drug Activation As A Therapeutic Strategy To Attenuate Acute Toxicity And Physiological Effects Of Heroin, Ting Zhang, Xirong Zheng, Kyungbo Kim, Fang Zheng, Chang-Guo Zhan Nov 2018

Blocking Drug Activation As A Therapeutic Strategy To Attenuate Acute Toxicity And Physiological Effects Of Heroin, Ting Zhang, Xirong Zheng, Kyungbo Kim, Fang Zheng, Chang-Guo Zhan

Molecular Modeling and Biopharmaceutical Center Faculty Publications

Heroin is a growing national crisis in America. There is an increasing frequency of heroin overdoses. All of the currently used therapeutic approaches to treatment of heroin abuse and other opioid drugs of abuse focus on antagonizing a brain receptor (particularly µ-opiate receptors). However, it has been known that the therapeutic use of certain µ-opiate receptor antagonist may actually increase heroin overdose. Once overdosed, heroin addicts may continue to get overdosed again and again until fatal. Here we report our design and validation of a novel therapeutic strategy targeting heroin activation based on our analysis of the chemical transformation and …

Arts Of Resistance: Ecologic History And Contemporary Interventions In The Valley Of Mexico, Chloë L. Courtney Nov 2018

Arts Of Resistance: Ecologic History And Contemporary Interventions In The Valley Of Mexico, Chloë L. Courtney

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis analyzes two contemporary artworks concerning Mexico City’s complex socio-ecologic history: the installation The Return of a Lake (2012), by Maria Thereza Alves, and the performance Plan Acalote (2015) by the collective Plan Acalli (Carlos Huitzil and Ehecatl Morales). Mexico City faces land subsidence, flooding, and water shortages. Systemic power imbalances and ongoing efforts to transform a wetland landscape to a city conforming to Eurocentric ideals concentrate these problems in marginal communities. Using strategies of eco-criticism, decolonial thought, and performance studies, I argue that The Return of a Lake and Plan Acalote link broad social and ecologic problems with …

Benefits Of Couple Prayer, Andrew S. Brimhall, Mark Butler Nov 2018

Benefits Of Couple Prayer, Andrew S. Brimhall, Mark Butler

Forever Families

Prayer can be defined as a two-way personal communication between an individual or couple and God. It is a vibrant, vital link with a Supreme Being that gives meaning to a person's life. Prayer allows individuals, couples, and families to come closer to God through healing. Prayer can be meditative (silent), colloquial (asking for abstract things like guidance or forgiveness), petitionary (asking for materialistic things), or ritual (memorized or read from a book). While it can be all of these things, it can also enrich the quality of marriage and family life. In fact, The Family: A Proclamation to the …

The status signalling hypothesis aims to explain within-species variation in ornamentation by suggesting that some ornaments signal dominance status. Here, we use multilevel meta-analytic models to challenge the textbook example of this hypothesis, the black bib of male house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We conducted a systematic review, and obtained primary data from published and unpublished studies to test whether dominance rank is positively associated with bib size across studies. Contrary to previous studies, the overall effect size (i.e. meta-analytic mean) was small and uncertain. Furthermore, we found several biases in the literature that further question the support available …

Evaluation Of Breastfeeding Interventions To Improve Duration In Women At Risk Of Breastfeeding Attrition, Anthonia Anukam Nov 2018

Evaluation Of Breastfeeding Interventions To Improve Duration In Women At Risk Of Breastfeeding Attrition, Anthonia Anukam

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits for infants, children, and mothers. These benefits are dependent on the duration of breastfeeding. To attain these benefits, the World Health Organization and the CDC recommends mothers exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of the infant’s life and to continue breastfeeding while introducing complementary food until the infant is at least one year old. Research studies have reported a strong positive correlation between breastfeeding and reduced infant morbidity and mortality. Optimal breastfeeding practice could help prevent 823,000 child deaths. Globally, not breastfeeding or premature cessation of breastfeeding is estimated to result in economic losses …

Wastewater In Context: Systems-Based Approaches To Improving Wastewater Infrastructure Transitions, Christine Prouty Nov 2018

Wastewater In Context: Systems-Based Approaches To Improving Wastewater Infrastructure Transitions, Christine Prouty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coastal communities and ecosystems around the world are some of those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In particular, the wastewater treatment systems in these areas are on the forefront of the effects of increasing frequency, duration, and intensity associated with extreme weather events. As such, decision making about adopting new wastewater technologies or transitioning to an improved treatment portfolio is an important area of research for coastal communities because they are critically linked to the health of the nearby aquatic ecosystems (i.e. tourism, fishing, cultural heritage, climate protection).

The decision making process about technology adoption and transitions …

Aqueous Humor Dynamics And The Constant-Pressure Perfusion Model Of Experimental Glaucoma In Brown-Norway Rats, Kayla R. Ficarrotta Nov 2018

Aqueous Humor Dynamics And The Constant-Pressure Perfusion Model Of Experimental Glaucoma In Brown-Norway Rats, Kayla R. Ficarrotta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Glaucoma affects tens of millions of people and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Virtually all current glaucoma therapies target elevated intraocular pressure (IOP); however, the contribution of intracranial pressure (ICP) to glaucoma has recently garnered interest. Strain at the optic nerve head is now known to depend on the translaminar pressure difference (TLPD), which is the difference between IOP and ICP, rather than IOP alone. A better understanding of how IOP and ICP relate to glaucoma development and progression is essential for developing improved therapies and diagnostic tests. Glaucoma is commonly modeled in rats, yet aqueous humor …

Composition And Method To Reduce Sediment And Bacterial Contamination From Water, Norma A. Alcantar, Babu Joseph, Kevin A. Young, Audrey Lynn Buttice Nov 2018

Composition And Method To Reduce Sediment And Bacterial Contamination From Water, Norma A. Alcantar, Babu Joseph, Kevin A. Young, Audrey Lynn Buttice

USF Patents

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been drawn to the issue of water contamination, particularly in developing countries, where an inexpensive, effective method of reducing waterborne pathogens and contaminants is needed. Experiments performed with mucilage extracted from the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus show that this mucilage is an effective tool for clearing contaminants from water supplies, including the removal of Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus bacteria, and the reduction of arsenic concentrations with very low mucilage concentrations (5 mg/L and 10 mg/L). Results for Bacillus and E. coli show settling to be complete in approximately five to ten …

Effects Of Interspersing Recall Versus Recognition Questions With Response Cards During Lectures On Students' Academic And Participation Behaviors In A College Classroom, Leslie S. Singer Nov 2018

Effects Of Interspersing Recall Versus Recognition Questions With Response Cards During Lectures On Students' Academic And Participation Behaviors In A College Classroom, Leslie S. Singer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Instructional design and delivery may be one tool available to teachers to increase the academic and social behaviors of all students in the classroom. Effective instruction is an evidence-based teaching strategy that can be used to efficiently educate our youth across all learning environments. One effective instructional strategy includes increasing students’ opportunities to respond to instructor-posed questions during lectures. Students may respond to questions using a response card system as a way to promote active engagement. This study examined the most common form of instructor-posed questions presented during lecture, recall and recognition questions, to determine the differential effects on students’ …

The Role Of Mothers And Fathers In Predicting Adolescents' Peer Affiliation And Behavioral Adjustment, Becky Grelle, Alexandra N. Davis, Ryan J. Kelly, Cara Streit Nov 2018

The Role Of Mothers And Fathers In Predicting Adolescents' Peer Affiliation And Behavioral Adjustment, Becky Grelle, Alexandra N. Davis, Ryan J. Kelly, Cara Streit

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The current study aimed to examine the associations between parental warmth and control and adolescents’ social behaviors (altruistic and public prosocial behaviors, aggression, and delinquency) in a low-income, Midwestern sample. The study also aimed to examine how peer relationships may play an indirect role in these associations. The results demonstrated complex links between parenting dimensions and adolescents' peer affiliation and social behaviors. Specifically, maternal and paternal warmth were predictive of peer affiliation, which in turn predicted adolescents' prosocial behaviors as well as negative social behaviors. There were also direct links between maternal and paternal parenting dimensions and social behaviors, highlighting …

Nursing & Midwifery: The Key To The Rapid And Cost Effective Expansion Of High Quality Universal Healthcare, Nigel Crisp, Sharon Brownie, Charlotte Refsum Nov 2018

Nursing & Midwifery: The Key To The Rapid And Cost Effective Expansion Of High Quality Universal Healthcare, Nigel Crisp, Sharon Brownie, Charlotte Refsum

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Nurses and midwives play a central role in all health systems. They support people in every aspect of their health and wellbeing – from health promotion to chronic disease management and specialist services. Together they make up half of the professional health workforce globally and account for about 90 percent of the contacts between patients and health professionals. This report argues that countries that invest in and develop their nursing and midwifery workforce can achieve a rapid, cost-effective expansion of high-quality UHC. This will also help to realize the World Health Assembly (WHA) target of 1 billion more people benefiting …

Implementing Housing First With Families And Young Adults: Challenges And Progress Toward Self-Sufficiency, Rong Bai, David Crampton, Robert L. Fischer, Nina Lalich, Tsui Chan

Faculty Scholarship

The Housing First approach has shown promise in helping to combat homelessness among chronically homeless single males, but less is known about the approach when it is applied to families and young adults. This study examined data from a pilot Housing First program that served 78 families (n = 63) and single young adults (n = 15) with homeless histories and mental health and/or substance use disorders to explore program functioning and client service use patterns. Using an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011), qualitative interview data were conducted first, and quantitative administrative data and …

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Platelet α-granule cargo release is fundamental to both hemostasis and thrombosis. Granule matrix hydration is a key regulated step in this process, yet its mechanism is poorly understood. In endothelial cells, there is evidence for 2 modes of cargo release: a jack-in-the-box mechanism of hydration-dependent protein phase transitions and an actin-driven granule constriction/extrusion mechanism. The third alternative considered is a prefusion, channel-mediated granule swelling, analogous to the membrane “ballooning” seen in procoagulant platelets. Using thrombin-stimulated platelets from a set of secretion-deficient, soluble N-ethylmaleimide factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) mutant mice and various ultrastructural approaches, we tested predictions of these …
