Analysis Of Covariance With Heterogeneity Of Regression And A Random Covariate, Christopher J. Mclouth Nov 2018

Analysis Of Covariance With Heterogeneity Of Regression And A Random Covariate, Christopher J. Mclouth

Psychology ETDs

The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) is a statistical technique originally developed by Fisher (1932) to increase the precision of the estimate of a treatment effect in experimental data. It is used when researchers have both qualitative and quantitative predictors of a continuous outcome. ANCOVA’s most basic assumptions are similar to those of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and other related linear models, but also include an additional assumption regarding the regression line relating the outcome and the covariate. This assumption, referred to as homogeneity of regression, requires that the within-group regression slopes be the same for all groups. Typically, one also …

Codification Of The Economic Substance Doctrine: Agency Response And Certain Other Unforeseen Consequences, Rebecca Rosenberg Nov 2018

Codification Of The Economic Substance Doctrine: Agency Response And Certain Other Unforeseen Consequences, Rebecca Rosenberg

William & Mary Business Law Review

Section 7701(o) of the Internal Revenue Code incorporates the controversial judicial doctrine of economic substance into statutory language. In other words, it “codifies” the doctrine. (The economic substance doctrine generally provides that a tax benefit that goes beyond Congressional intent can be disallowed by the courts, even if the taxpayer meets all of the literal Code and regulatory requirements for claiming the benefit.)

This codification appears to have accidentally dissuaded the relevant agency (the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS) from raising economic substance issues—an effect that is contrary to Congress’s intent in enacting the doctrine into legislation. Essentially, Congress imported …

Autophagy And Aging: Maintaining The Proteome Through Exercise And Caloric Restriction, Kurt A. Escobar, Nathan H. Cole, Christine M. Mermier, Trisha A. Vandusseldrop

Faculty Articles

Accumulation of dysfunctional and damaged cellular proteins and organelles occursduring aging, resulting in a disruption of cellular homeostasis and progressive degen-eration and increases the risk of cell death. Moderating the accrual of these defunctcomponents is likely a key in the promotion of longevity. While exercise is knownto promote healthy aging and mitigate age‐related pathologies, the molecular under-pinnings of this phenomenon remain largely unclear. However, recent evidencessuggest that exercise modulates the proteome. Similarly, caloric restriction (CR), aknown promoter of lifespan, is understood to augment intracellular protein quality.Autophagy is an evolutionary conserved recycling pathway responsible for thedegradation, then turnover of cellular proteins …

Explicit Bias, Jessica A. Clarke Nov 2018

Explicit Bias, Jessica A. Clarke

Northwestern University Law Review

In recent decades, legal scholars have advanced sophisticated models for understanding prejudice and discrimination, drawing on disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and economics. These models explain how inequality is implicit in cognition and seamlessly woven into social structures. And yet, obvious, explicit, and overt forms of bias have not gone away. The law does not need empirical methods to identify bias when it is marching down the street in Nazi regalia, hurling misogynist invective, or trading in anti-Muslim stereotypes. Official acceptance of such prejudices may be uniquely harmful in normalizing discrimination. But surprisingly, many discrimination cases ignore explicit bias. Courts …

Radiation In Its Origin: Health Risks Resulting From Prolonged Exposure To Radon, Tetiana Soloviova, Evans Lespinasse Nov 2018

Radiation In Its Origin: Health Risks Resulting From Prolonged Exposure To Radon, Tetiana Soloviova, Evans Lespinasse

Publications and Research

Among non-smokers, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer, and the second cause of lung cancer overall, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Radon cannot be detected through one's sense of sight, smell, hearing, taste or touch. The only way to detect it is by testing certain spaces or environments with specialized instruments. This radioactive gas is present in trace quantities in the earth and produced by decaying uranium. It enters buildings through cracks in walls, floors, construction joints or gaps around service pipes, electrical wires and sump pits. It emits heavy nuclear fragments of alpha particles (two …

Important Factors To Consider Before Taking The Marriage Plunge, Jeffry Larson

Forever Families

The high divorce rate (about 40% of first marriages end in divorce) in the United States and the resulting concern with marrying the right person at the right time makes selecting someone to marry an especially important contemporary issue for single adults. But what predicts if you will be happily married or not?

© 2018 The Author(s). Background: Vitamin A and its metabolite, retinoic acid (RA), are important regulators of cell differentiation and organ morphogenesis. Its impact on beef cattle muscle growth remains undefined. Method: Angus steer calves were administrated with 0 (control) or 150,000IU vitamin A (retinyl palmitate in glycerol, i.m.) per calf at birth and 1 month of age. At 2 months of age, a biopsy of the Biceps femoris muscle was obtained to analyze the immediate effects of vitamin A injection on myogenic capacity of muscle cells. The resulting steers were harvested at 14months of age. Results: Vitamin A administration …

Digital Gold: Cybersecurity Regulations And Establishing The Free Trade Of Big Data, Victoria Conrad Nov 2018

Digital Gold: Cybersecurity Regulations And Establishing The Free Trade Of Big Data, Victoria Conrad

William & Mary Business Law Review

Data is everywhere. With more than ten billion Internetenabled devices worldwide, each day individuals create a flood of information that is transferred onto the Internet as big data. Businesses that have the resources to capture and utilize data can better understand their consumers, allowing for reinforcement of customer relationship management, improvements to the management of operational risk, and enhancement of overall firm performance. However, big data’s advantages come with high costs. The cost of organization and storage coupled with the fact that no legal principle allows for any sort of property rights in big data creates a “digital divide” between …

Distinct Proteostasis Circuits Cooperate In Nuclear And Cytoplasmic Protein Quality Control, Rahul S. Samant, Christine M. Livingston, Emily M. Sontag, Judith Frydman

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Protein misfolding is linked to a wide array of human disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and type II diabetes1,2. Protective cellular protein quality control (PQC) mechanisms have evolved to selectively recognize misfolded proteins and limit their toxic effects3,4,5,6,7,8,9, thus contributing to the maintenance of the proteome (proteostasis). Here we examine how molecular chaperones and the ubiquitin–proteasome system cooperate to recognize and promote the clearance of soluble misfolded proteins. Using a panel of PQC substrates with distinct characteristics and localizations, we define distinct chaperone and ubiquitination circuitries that execute quality control in the cytoplasm and nucleus. …
