ISBS Proceedings Archive
Active workstations make it possible to interrupt prolonged sitting during the office worker’s day, alleviating some health risks. Interrupting prolonged sitting with use of a treadmill desk revealed positive effects on postural stability. The present study aimed to investigate the acute effect of breaking up prolonged sitting with body weight resistance exercise on postural stability. Eight sedentary adults participated in a randomised two treatment crossover design: 1) uninterrupted sitting for 5 hrs versus 2) interrupting sitting with 3 min of exercise every 30 min. On a pressure plate, postural stability tests were performed pre and post condition. Anteroposterior centre of …

Back Muscle Fatigue Might Lead To Alternated Spine Loading In Recreational Ergometer Rowing, Till Koopmann, Stephan Dill, Gert-Peter Brüggemann, Steffen Willwacher
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to investigate fatigue related changes in spinal kinematics and muscle activity of back muscles during a 2000 m all-out performance on a rowing ergometer. Kinematic data of the trunk and EMG data of eight back muscles were recorded for ten subjects. A novel approach analyzing the spinal curvature was utilized identifying a significant increase (p < 0.05) for the thoracic spine. For the M. trapezius a significantly decreased mean frequency (p < 0.05) was found. The lumbar spine and the M. erector spinae showed no significant changes (p > 0.05). These results contrast with findings for elite rowers which might be explained by a different rowing technique. Increased spinal curvature is a factor for injury risk. Thus, rowing programs should include monitoring of spinal curvature and strengthening of …

Use Of Musculoskeletal Modeling To Find The Balance Between Performance And Injury Prevention In Sports – A Proof Of Concept, Dhruv Gupta, Cyril Donnelly, Richard Neptune, Lawrence Abraham, Jody Jensen, Jeffrey A. Reinbolt
ISBS Proceedings Archive
In this study we used musculoskeletal modelling with mathematical optimization tools to find whole-body kinematics that simultaneously reduce risk of injury and enhance sports performance. Combining these objectives has long been the goal of sports science research. We focused on improving hang-time parameters in volleyball (Gupta et al., 2015). We were able to preserve an advantage of hang-time (late swing) and address its disadvantage (potential loss in peak height of the hitting arm) by increasing the height of the hitting wrist by 1 cm, while at the same time not increasing the shoulder moments. This study provided a proof …

Maintaining A Firm Ankle: An Effective Coaching Cue For Improving Football Kicking?, James Peacock, Kevin Ball
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Kicking with high ball speed is important across football codes. Maintaining a firm ankle during impact has been used as a coaching cue to improve kick performance. However, biomechanical studies of human kickers have identified conflicting results, questioning its effectiveness. Recent mechanical modelling has identified reduced ankle plantarflexion was associated with increased impact efficiency, and the aim of this paper was to determine if reduced ankle plantarflexion was associated with increased impact efficiency in human kickers. An intra-individual analysis of human players was performed. Foot-ball impact characteristics were recorded at 4,000 Hz. Impact efficiency was highest when ankle plantarflexion during …

Open Science: A Review On Open Peer Review Literature, Oluwaseyi Wusu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Peer review truly, is the king in scientific communication –however, traditional peer review has been accused of many irregularities such as inconsistency and unrealistic peer reviewing, methodology flaws, and the likes. Despite all these irregularities, scholars still believe in peer review but new ways of opening up peer reviews are encouraged. There were high levels of backing for most of the attributes of OPR, such as disclosing identities of reviewers, open reports, open interaction, open platform, commenting on the final-version of published articles or data. Furthermore, the idea of supplementing pre-publication peer review with some form of post-publication evaluation would …
