Three-Dimensional Kinematics Of The Batted Ball In Baseball: The Effect Of Spin On The Ball Trajectory And Flight Distance, Hirotaka Nakashima, Gen Horiuchi, Shinji Sakurai
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to describe the three-dimensional kinematics of batted baseballs toward the same-field, center-field, and opposite-field, and estimate the effect of ball spin on trajectory and flight distance. Two collegiate baseball players performed free-batting, and they were instructed to hit a ball as far as possible in each direction. Twenty-seven trials were analyzed, and compared the ball kinematics among three hitting directions. The mean flight distance for the center-field was greater than that of the other fields. For the same-field and opposite-field, the amount of side spin components was larger than that of the center-field. Thus, …

Kinetic Factors Differentiating Mid-To-Late Sprint Acceleration Performance In Sprinters And Soccer Players, Steffi L. Colyer, Ryu Nagahara, Yohei Takai, Aki I.T. Salo
ISBS Proceedings Archive
High-speed running in soccer is an important skill, however, the underlying kinetic factors are not fully understood. Ground reaction forces from steps 8 to 24 of maximal-effort sprints were captured for 24 soccer players and 28 track and field athletes using 54 force plates. Correlations between discrete force variables and horizontal acceleration were assessed, and statistical parametric mapping revealed performance associations across entire waveforms. Track and field athletes produced higher forces (mean anteroposterior: 1.56 N·kg-1) across shorter contacts (0.101 s) than soccer players (1.27 N·kg-1, 0.110 s). Interestingly, the technical ability to apply force and the …

Meta-Analysis: Fatigue Does Not Increase Lower-Limb Injury Risk, Tim L. Doyle
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study sought to resolve a long-standing debate in the literature about whether or not fatigue causes lower-limb injury. For the purposes of this research, fatigue was considered chronically (time of the season) and acutely (game time). From a possible 1349 (727 after duplicated removed) articles identified that related to lower-limb musculoskeletal injuries, 15 met inclusion criteria, which provided 21 data sets. A meta-analysis on the available data sets determined that neither acute nor chronic fatigue had any influence on the likelihood of sustaining an injury to the lower limb. Additionally, this research demonstrated that injury researchers have not traditionally …

The Symmetry Angle Identifies Less Clinically Relevant Inter-Limb Asymmetries Than The Symmetry Index In Healthy Adults, Daniel J. Glassbrook, Joel T. Fuller, Jacqueline A. Alderson, Jodie A. Wills, Tim L. A. Doyle
ISBS Proceedings Archive
There are several methods for calculating inter-limb symmetry, an inter-limb difference ≥15% has been suggested as an indicator of sporting injury risk. The purpose of this study was to compare three common methods for determining symmetry: the Symmetry Index (percentage difference; SI) when referenced to the left limb (SILeft) or the average of both limbs (SIAverage), and the Symmetry Angle (vector difference; SA). 15 recreationally active participants completed a sprint protocol on a non-motorised treadmill. Accelerometers were positioned on both tibias to measure peak resultant acceleration (PRA). The SA identified less clinically relevant PRA inter-limb asymmetries …

Dynamic Gear Ratio In Children And Adults During Walking And Implications For Muscle Mechanical Efficiency, Bill Baltzopoulos
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Human movement is the result of joint rotations. Muscles provide the "engine" for movement acting with a leverage or moment arm around joint axes of rotation. This leverage in combination with the external leverage provided by the environment has important implications for muscle length and shortening velocity, which, in turn, affects its capability to generate forces and transmit them to the skeleton. The main aim of this work was to gain a better understanding of how skeletal geometry and muscle leverage determine muscle function and movement. Ten children (Age: 9.2±1.3 years, Height: 1.36±0.04, Mass: 30.61±5.91) and 12 adults (Age: 27.4±2.6 …
