Friendship In The Age Of Social Media In Saudi Arabia, Rayan Faleh Alotaibi
Friendship In The Age Of Social Media In Saudi Arabia, Rayan Faleh Alotaibi
Student Theses and Dissertations
The use of social media platforms has grown in recent days. It is well known that social networks are one of the greatest methods that friendships are developed in this age of technology. The world has been reduced to a universal community with an increase in information technology which has influenced social forms such as relationships and friendship. This paper seeks to examine how the use of social media influences friendships in Saudi Arabia; further, this paper seeks to identify how the culture of Saudi Arabia influences the development of friendship. The study used an online survey which involved 407 …
Soybean Androgenesis, Martina Garda
Soybean Androgenesis, Martina Garda
Student Theses and Dissertations
Food is a constant world demand, and soybeans are among the most complete food crops which have fed people since its domestication. Unfortunately, soybean is a difficult crop to work within the biotechnology laboratory. Soybean androgenesis has been a challenging process yet to be advanced significantly after years of attempts. There have been some minor advances, for instance, reports of a 2% induction rate in anther culture, formation of roots, rare shoots, but only a handful of plantlets that did not survive to maturity. This dissertation compiles these efforts in the context of developing a pyramidal stressors model for androgenesis …

Prognostics, such as remaining useful life (RUL) prediction, is a crucial task in condition-based maintenance. A major challenge in data-driven prognostics is the difficulty of obtaining a sufficient number of samples of failure progression. However, for traditional machine learning methods and deep neural networks, enough training data is a prerequisite to train good prediction models. In this work, we proposed a transfer learning algorithm based on Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) recurrent neural networks for RUL estimation, in which the models can be first trained on different but related datasets and then fine-tuned by the target dataset. Extensive experimental results …

A Two Compartment Pharmacokinetic Model Describes The Intra‐Articular Delivery And Retention Of Rhprg4 Following Acl Transection In The Yucatan Mini Pig, Mark Hurtig, Iman Zaghoul, Heather Sheardown, Tannin A. Schmidt, Lina Liu, Ling Zhang, Khaled A. Elsaid, Gregory D. Jay
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Treatment of the injured joint with rhPRG4 is based on recent observations that inflammation diminishes expression of native PRG4. Re‐establishing lubrication between pressurized and sliding cartilage surfaces during locomotion promotes the nascent expression of PRG4 and thus intra‐articular (IA) treatment strategies should be supported by pharmacokinetic evidence establishing the residence time of rhPRG4. A total of 21 Yucatan minipigs weighing ∼55 Kg each received 4 mg of 131I‐rhPRG4 delivered by IA injection 5 days following surgical ACL transection. Animals were sequentially euthanized following IA rhPRG4 at 10 mins (time zero), 24, 72 hrs, 6, 13 and 20 days later. The …
Protein Aggregates And Polyglutamine Tracts In Neurodegenerative Disease, John Mack
Protein Aggregates And Polyglutamine Tracts In Neurodegenerative Disease, John Mack
Senior Honors Theses
The incidence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease and other Polyglutamine Diseases is projected to dramatically increase throughout the developed world, and yet the pathology of these diseases remains poorly understood. One pathway that these neurodegenerative diseases share is the accumulation of pathologic proteins which are not only harmful in their soluble form but may go on to form toxic aggregates. In many cases, a consensus has yet to be reached concerning the mechanism for protein aggregation. Therefore, the exploration of the roles of these proteins and their possible mechanisms, along with potential techniques for …

Does Gottman’S Marital Communication Conceptualization Inform Teen Dating Violence? Communication Skill Deficits Analyzed Across Three Samples Of Diverse Adolescents, Heidi Adams Rueda, Monica Yndo, Lela Rankin Williams, Ryan C. Shorey
Social Work Faculty Publications
Communication skill deficits are thought to contribute to teen dating violence (TDV), parallel to the inclusion of these throughout prevention curricula. Communication research among adolescents is highly underdeveloped, although a preliminary study utilizing Gottman’s marital communication conceptualization found that a majority of negative communication behaviors predictive of marital distress were also associated with relationship aggression among primarily White college students. Our aim was to replicate this study with diverse samples of adolescents (50.3% Latino, 23.5% Black; Mage = 16.06). Urban high school youth, pregnant and parenting youth in residential foster care, and youth in urban after-school programs self-reported on …

Sex Trafficking And The Attribution Of Blame: A Comparison Between Vietnamese And American Perception Of Sex-Trafficked Individuals, Tram Nguyen
Senior Honors Theses
Sex trafficking is one of the most persistent issues in Asian countries and specifically in Vietnam. Hundreds of Vietnamese are trafficked daily across the world, but mainly in Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Laos, China, and Thailand. Sexually trafficked individuals are reported to have symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal tendencies, and physical violence. Despite the increasing number of victims, there is a lack of empirical research on issues relating to the impact of human trafficking on Vietnamese people and especially the public attitude about the problem. The current study examined the public’s general knowledge of trafficking myths, their willingness …

Interrogation Or Experimentation? Assessing Non-Consensual Human Experimentation During The War On Terror, William J. Aceves
Interrogation Or Experimentation? Assessing Non-Consensual Human Experimentation During The War On Terror, William J. Aceves
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
The prohibition against non-consensual human experimentation has long been considered sacrosanct. It traces its legal roots to the Nuremberg trials although the ethical foundations dig much deeper. It prohibits all forms of medical and scientific experimentation on non-consenting individuals. The prohibition against non-consensual human experimentation is now well established in both national and international law.
Despite its status as a fundamental and non-derogable norm, the prohibition against non-consensual human experimentation was called into question during the War on Terror by the CIA’s treatment of “high-value detainees.” Seeking to acquire actionable intelligence, the CIA tested the “theory of learned helplessness” on …

Attachment Style: How Pre-Adoptive Trauma Influences International Adoptees, Kelly Vanlew
Attachment Style: How Pre-Adoptive Trauma Influences International Adoptees, Kelly Vanlew
Senior Honors Theses
An individual’s attachment style influences many aspects of his life, including emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social development. Attachment style is largely dependent upon both the quality and quantity of care a child receives from a caregiver in the earliest stages of life. Children who have been adopted internationally may have been exposed to challenges posed by inadequate caregiving or resources, which includes malnutrition, poor medical attention, and instances of abuse, neglect, or deprivation. Because of these adverse experiences, international adoptees may be at risk of developing attachment disorders, experiencing behavioral issues, and struggling socially and psychologically. However, many of these …

Clinical Outcomes Of Successful Revascularization Of Chronic Total Coronary Occlusions With Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffolds: A Systematic Review., Roman Marchenko, Salik Nazir, Shelina Malla, Anthony Donato
Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency
Revascularization of chronic total occlusions (CTO) with percutaneous coronary intervention is associated with favorable long-term clinical and echocardiographic outcomes. Whether bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) would be advantageous in the treatment of CTO is unknown as patients with these lesions were generally excluded from large BVS randomized trials. We performed a systematic review, which sought to summarize known data on mid- to long-term clinical outcomes for BVS in CTO. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, clinicaltrials.gov, and the Cochrane Library through April 2018 to look for studies on implantation of BVS in CTO. Outcomes of interest included myocardial infarction, cardiac death, all-cause mortality, …
Machine Learning-Based Modeling And Optimization Of Nitrogen Removal In Wastewater Treatment Under Highly Variable Operating Conditions, Rebecca L. Rubinstein
Machine Learning-Based Modeling And Optimization Of Nitrogen Removal In Wastewater Treatment Under Highly Variable Operating Conditions, Rebecca L. Rubinstein
Doctoral Dissertations
Robust and effective nutrient removal in wastewater treatment is critical to protection of human health and the environment. However, it can be very challenging under variable influent conditions such as those experienced at the University of Connecticut (UConn) Water Pollution Control Facility. The highly seasonal nature of the UConn student population results in rapid transitions between very high and very low loading rates, which can cause short-term permit violations while the system adjusts. The microbial community responsible for most nutrient removal at this and many other facilities is complex and very responsive to influent and environmental conditions. This responsiveness allows …

Binding sensory features of multiple modalities of what we hear and see allows formation of a coherent percept to access semantics. Previous work on object naming has focused on visual confrontation naming with limited research in nonverbal auditory or multisensory processing. To investigate neural substrates and sensory effects of lexical retrieval, we evaluated healthy adults (n = 118) and left hemisphere stroke patients (LHD, n = 42) in naming manipulable objects across auditory (sound), visual (picture), and multisensory (audiovisual) conditions. LHD patients were divided into cortical, cortical⁻subcortical, or subcortical lesions (CO, CO⁻SC, SC), and specific lesion location investigated in …

Breaking-Up The ‘Precariat’: Personalisation, Differentiation And Deindividuation In Precarious Work Groups, C Manolchev, R Saundry, D Lewis
Breaking-Up The ‘Precariat’: Personalisation, Differentiation And Deindividuation In Precarious Work Groups, C Manolchev, R Saundry, D Lewis
Plymouth Business School
Much-debated and researched, the subject of precarious work remains at the forefront of academic and policy discourses. A development of current interest is the reported growth of employment flexibility and increase in non-standard and atypical work, regarded by some as contributing to the emergence of a class-like ‘precariat’ of insecure and marginalised workers. However, this precariat framework remain largely untested and underexplored. Using in-depth narratives from 77 semi-structured interviews with workers from groups within the precariat spectrum, in this article the authors address this gap. The study finds that cohesion within and between these groups is overstated, and worker collectivisation …

Perceptions Of Infertility As A Barrier To Cervical Cancer Screening In Rural Botswana: A Qualitative Study, Rebecca L. Upton
Perceptions Of Infertility As A Barrier To Cervical Cancer Screening In Rural Botswana: A Qualitative Study, Rebecca L. Upton
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications
Background: Cervical cancer screening in Botswana and in particular the use of visual screening in rural areas has been on the rise in the past several years. Despite increased awareness and the introduction of less invasive methods of screening, qualitative data indicate that socio-cultural factors such as infertility related stigma, and beliefs about impaired fecundity affect overall efficacy of screening campaigns. Objective: This study sought to explore barriers to the utilization of cervical cancer screening in rural communities in northern Botswana. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted in this qualitative research study. All interviews were transcribed and coded both manually as …
Systemic Oxytocin Administration Alters Mesolimbic Dopamine Relase, Mary Kathlyn Estes
Systemic Oxytocin Administration Alters Mesolimbic Dopamine Relase, Mary Kathlyn Estes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Growing research indicates oxytocin may be involved in relieving anxiety and attenuating the rewarding effects of psychostimulants. The present study investigated the effects of subchronic oxytocin treatments on mesolimbic dopamine transmission in areas associated with anxiety (amygdala) and addiction (nucleus accumbens, NAc). Using in vivo fixed potential amperometry, stimulation-evoked dopamine release was recorded either in the amygdala or NAc in oxytocin pretreated mice. During dopamine recordings, mice received a drug challenge of either oxytocin, the dopamine reuptake blocker nomifensine (psychostimulant), or saline. In the amygdala, dopamine release was decreased following the oxytocin challenge but only in oxytocin pretreated mice. In …
A Case Study Of Student And Staff Perceptions Of The School Breakfast Program: Food For Thought From A College Preparatory High School For Underserved Students, Jennifer Lucas Young
A Case Study Of Student And Staff Perceptions Of The School Breakfast Program: Food For Thought From A College Preparatory High School For Underserved Students, Jennifer Lucas Young
Dissertations and Theses
Research suggests that participation in the School Breakfast Program positively impacts academic success by improving student behavior, cognitive functioning, and attendance. Additionally, the School Breakfast Program appears to improve food insecurity, overall health and weight-related issues. However, compared to the National School Lunch Program, participation in the School Breakfast Program has been historically low, especially at the high school level. Using an integrated composite framework, a combination of social cognitive theory and ecological systems theory, as the conceptual model, this qualitative case study explored factors influencing student breakfast eating and participation in the school's breakfast program within a college-preparatory high …
Remedies In Canadian Administrative Law: A Roadmap To A Parallel Legal Universe, Cristie Ford
Remedies In Canadian Administrative Law: A Roadmap To A Parallel Legal Universe, Cristie Ford
All Faculty Publications
Administrative law in Canada, as in many other common law countries, centres around judicial review doctrine. Sometimes, one may even get the sense that administrative law and administrative law remedies begin at the point at which a party to an administrative action seeks judicial review of that action through the courts. Yet an overly tight focus on court action misses the hugely important first step in real-life administrative action: the varied and sometimes creative, purpose-built remedies that a tribunal itself may impose.
This chapter, which has been revised and updated for the third edition of this leading text on Canadian …
