It is often hypothesized that intra-sexual competition accelerates actuarial senescence, or the increase in mortality rates with age. However, an alternative hypothesis is that parental investment is more important to determining senescence rates. We used a unique model system, the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), to study variation in actuarial senescence. In this species, genetically determined morphs display discrete mating strategies and disassortative pairing, providing an excellent opportunity to test the predictions of the above hypotheses. Compared to tan-striped males, white-striped males are more polygynous and aggressive, and less parental. Tan-striped females receive less parental support, and invest more into parental …

Establishment And Application Of Macadamia Protein Sandwich Elisa Method, Jia Zengyan, Wang Xiaomin, Sha Zhicong, Zhou Rourou, Sheng Wei, Zhang Yan
Food and Machinery
The unprocessed macadamia protein was extracted by alkali-soluble acid precipitation method, and the rat and rabbit polyclonal antibodies were prepared respectively. The rabbit and the murine polyclonal antibodies were used as the capture and detection antibodies respectively to establish a double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The detection limit of this method was (0.95±0.17) ng/mL. The method had no obvious cross-reaction with soybean, walnut, hazelnut, almond, peanut, pistachio, cashew and wheat protein, which proved that the method was specific. The recovery rate of macadamia protein in baked macadamia nuts and baked biscuits is in the range of 73.67%~77.03%. This method was …

Optimization Of Enzymatic Transformation Of2-O-Α-D-Glucopyranosyl-L-Ascorbic Acid, Huang Liping, Hao Jianhua, Wang Wei, Sun Jingjing, Liu Junzhong
Food and Machinery
2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl L-ascorbic acid(AA-2G) was transformed by marine microorganism cyclodextrin glucanotrans-ferase (CGTase) using L-ascorbic acid and β-cyclodextrin(β-CD) as substrate. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of AA-2G were undertaken by LC-MS and HPLC. On the basis of single factor experiment Plackett-Burman design was carried out to determine three main effective factors (pH, substrate concentration, enzyme concentration). Then Box-Behnken design using three factors and three levels was applied to optimize synthesis conditions of AA-2G. The results indicated that the optimum conditions were pH 9.07, enzyme concentration 90.78 U/g·β-CD, substrate concentration 56.81 g/L, the ratio of substrate 1∶1(volume ratio), reacting for 24 h, at …

A Case Study To Determine Classroom And Field Educator Perspectives On Occupational Therapy Student Readiness For Transition To Clinical Practice, Pamela Karp
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
In occupational therapy education, fieldwork is essential to preparing students for licensure and practice. Fieldwork is where students are afforded opportunities to assimilate knowledge gained through didactic coursework into newly constructed knowledge developed through practice in authentic clinical environments. The classroom and the field represent diverse and unique teaching and learning environments which students are required to successfully navigate. Facilitating student success these environments requires the efforts of educators and the students themselves. Understanding educator perspectives about student readiness for practice in fieldwork settings can advance organized professional educator development, lead to improved academic curriculums, and more productive communication between …

Agents Fibrogènes Et Cancérogènes Dans Les Mines D’Or Et De Fer Du Québec : Étude Exploratoire, France Labrèche, Félix Gervais, Guy Perrault

Publications and Research
Background: Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation (tUS) is an emerging technique that uses ultrasonic waves to noninvasively modulate brain activity. As with other forms of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), tUS may be useful for altering cortical excitability and neuroplasticity for a variety of research and clinical applications. The effects of tUS on cortical excitability are still unclear, and further complications arise from the wide parameter space offered by various types of devices, transducer arrangements, and stimulation protocols. Diagnostic ultrasound imaging devices are safe, commonly available systems that may be useful for tUS. However, the feasibility of modifying brain activity with diagnostic tUS …

Age-Based Differences In The Usefulness Of Resources: A Multi-Study Investigation Of Work And Well-Being Outcomes, Lale Muazzez Yaldiz
Dissertations and Theses
The labor force is aging globally. It is projected that the number of older workers will increase in the workforce in the near future. At the same time, it is estimated that workplaces will grow more age-diverse, where younger and older workers will work side-by-side more often than they used to. These demographic shifts in the workforce necessitate a further understanding of the differences between the values, needs and motivation, and work outcomes of employees of different ages. To this end, few studies to date have investigated whether job-related resources are differentially useful for the work and non-work outcomes of …

Turning Millennials Into Geriatric Nurses, Aleatha Rossler
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
On the first day of nursing school, I ask the students who wants to be in pediatrics, labor and delivery, and ICU. No one raises their hand for geriatrics. With the growing number of baby boomers reaching retirement age, the geriatric care population is significantly lacking in knowledgeable care givers.

Racialized Rescue Narratives In Public Discourses On Youth Prostitution And Sex Trafficking In The United States, Carrie N. Baker
Racialized Rescue Narratives In Public Discourses On Youth Prostitution And Sex Trafficking In The United States, Carrie N. Baker
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
This article presents an analysis of how activists, politicians, and the media framed youth involvement in the sex trade during the 1970s, the 1990s, and the 2000s in the United States. Across these periods of public concern about the issue, similar framing has recurred that has drawn upon gendered and racialized notions of victimization and perpetration. This frame has successfully brought attention to this issue by exploiting public anxieties at historical moments when social change was threatening white male dominance. Using intersectional feminist theory, I argue that mainstream rhetoric opposing the youth sex trade worked largely within neoliberal logics, ignoring …

Concentrations Of Purine Metabolites Are Elevated In Human Fluids From Adults And Infants And In Livers From Mice Fed Diets Depleted Of Bovine Milk Exosomes And Their Rna Cargos, Ana Aguilar Lozano
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since miRNAs discovery, evidence keeps accumulating on their role in human physiology for homeostasis and implications during disease development. Upon the discovery that miRNAs could be encapsulated in exosomes and provide protection, evidence keeps accumulating on the possibility for miRNAs to be transferred between distant cells and elicit gene expression changes, and clinical trials are being developed to identify miRNAs in body fluids that could predict disease outcomes based on miRNA encapsulation in exosomes making them stable in body fluids. Recently, studies have shown that dietary miRNAs encapsulated in exosomes can be absorbed in mice and humans, and on the …

Using Participatory Action Research To Make Diabetes Education Accessible For People With Visual Impairment, Ann Sawyer Williams
Dissertations
The three million people who have both visual impairment and diabetes (PVID) represent a large underserved population in the United States. Diabetes self-management education (DSME) is essential for effective management of diabetes. Numerous guidelines exist for making DSME fully accessible to PVID. No national diabetes organization produces basic DSME materials in accessible format, and few DSME programs are fully accessible to PVID. This dissertation used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach to discover ways to increase the accessibility of the DSME materials and programs of the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland (DAGC) for PVID, adding access for PVID to an …
