Comparative Molecular Transporter Efficiency Of Cyclic Peptides Containing Tryptophan And Arginine Residues, Samara E. Hanna, Saghar Mozaffari, Rakesh Tiwari, Keykavous Parang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Cyclic peptides containing tryptophan (W) and arginine (R) residues, [WR]5, [WR]6, [WR]7, [WR]8, and [WR]9, were synthesized through Fmoc solid-phase chemistry to compare their molecular transporter efficiency. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the peptides was evaluated using human leukemia carcinoma cell line (CCRF-CEM) and normal kidney cell line (LLC-PK1). [WR]6, [WR]7, [WR]8, and [WR]9 were not significantly cytotoxic to LLC-PK1cells at a concentration of 10 μM after 3 h incubation. Among all the peptides, [WR]9 was found to be a more efficient …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The proper role of research skills and training to conduct research in professional psychology education has been controversial throughout the history of the field. An extensive effort was undertaken recently to address that issue and identify ways the field might move forward in a more unified manner. In 2015, the American Psychological Association (APA) Board of Educational Affairs convened a task force to address one of the recommendations made by the Health Service Psychology Education Collaborative in 2013. That recommendation stated that the education and training of health service psychologists (HSPs) include an integrative approach to science and practice that …

The Issue Of Compensation: Should Ncaa Athletes Be Compensated Above Their Scholarships, Justen Cook Nov 2018

The Issue Of Compensation: Should Ncaa Athletes Be Compensated Above Their Scholarships, Justen Cook

Senior Honors Theses

There is an issue of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes being exploited by their respective universities and a need for change in the way the student-athletes are being compensated for their efforts. The history of the NCAA has established the landscape of the organization today. The ways in which NCAA student-athletes are exploited can be investigated through a review of the history of the NCAA, court cases involving compensation of student-athletes, including the legal aspects of compensating the athletes, and a plan to potentially alleviate the turmoil that has taken place within the NCAA.

Improving Quiet-at-Night on a Telemetry Unit:

Introducing a Holistic Sleep Menu Intervention

Abstract

Problem

A hospital in San Francisco, California has performed poorly on patient care service as evidenced by low Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The survey’s lowest score was from the “Quiet at Night” measure.

Context

A Sleep Menu initiative was implemented in the hospital’s telemetry unit. Microsystem assessment and Strengths-Weakness-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) analysis identified practices that might impede intervention success. Findings showed that benefits and opportunities outweighed costs; cost-benefit analysis estimated an annual net benefit of $6,354. Other benefits included improved patient well-being, …

Seven Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of International Development, Jaylyn Perry Nov 2018

Seven Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of International Development, Jaylyn Perry

Senior Honors Theses

This literature review analyzes the global issue of poverty and the various factors that are influencing the ability of nations to effectively achieve development. The many interpretations of what development is, as well as the categories and forms of poverty, are examined to show the scope of the issue. Seven factors: politics, economics, institutions, culture, geography, aid, and globalization are explored as to their impact on the effectiveness of development around the world. The review of the literature found that effective development is influenced by each one of these factors and it is necessary to consider them when planning and …

Ebola And War In The Democratic Republic Of Congo: Avoiding Failure And Thinking Ahead, Lawrence O. Gostin, Matthew M. Kavanagh, Elizabeth Cameron

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is exceptionally dangerous, occurring within active armed conflict and geopolitical volatility, including a million displaced persons. With 421 cases, 240 deaths, and the numbers increasing, this Ebola outbreak is the second deadliest in history. Recent spread to Butembo, home to 1.2 million people, raised concerns. The DRC, World Health Organization (WHO), and partners are leading a vigorous international response, yet despite deploying an experimental vaccine, cases doubled in October 2018 and many cases had unknown origin.

Uncontrolled Ebola outbreaks can expand quickly, as occurred in West Africa in 2014. Averting …

Risks Of Excess Iodine Intake In Ghana: Current Situation, Challenges, And Lessons For The Future, Brenda A.Z. Abu, Wilna Oldewage‐Theron,, Richmond N.O. Aryeetey

Articles

In Ghana, iodine deficiency was first reported in 1994 among 33% of the population. A nationwide Universal Salt Iodization (USI) program plus other complementary interventions were subsequently implemented as a response. Our paper reviews the current risks of excess iodine status in Ghana and identifies policy and research gaps. A mixed methods review of 12 policies and institutional reports and 13 peer‐reviewed articles was complemented with consultations with 23 key informants (salt producers and distributors, food processors, regulatory agency officials, and healthcare providers) purposively sampled between May and August 2017. The findings show a strong policy environment indicated by regulations …

Constraints, Tradeoffs, And Opportunities For Conservation In Contemporary Landscapes, Marjorie R. Liberati Nov 2018

Constraints, Tradeoffs, And Opportunities For Conservation In Contemporary Landscapes, Marjorie R. Liberati

Doctoral Dissertations

The challenges of achieving conservation goals increase as more people and competing land-uses are present on landscapes. In these landscapes, tradeoffs are inevitable, and people and nature cannot be considered independently. Instead, conservation planning needs to accommodate the complexities, challenges, and synergies within social-ecological systems. Therefore, the overall goal of my research was to develop and apply planning frameworks and tools to improve conservation decision making and bridge implementation gaps in multi-objective landscapes. To achieve this goal, multiple avenues of research were pursued including 1) outlining a conservation framework that considered suites of spatially- and implementation-specific objectives; 2) exploring protected …

Background: The transmission of malaria to mosquitoes depends on the presence of gametocytes that circulate in the peripheral blood of infected human hosts. Sensitive estimates of the densities of female gametocytes (FG) and male gametocytes (MG) may allow the prediction of infectivity to mosquitoes and thus a molecular estimate of the human infectious reservoir for transmission. Methods: A novel multiplex qRT-PCR assay with intron-spanning primers was developed for the parallel quantification of FG and MG. CCp4 (PF3D7-0903800) transcripts specific for FG and PfMGET (PF3D7-1469900) transcripts specific for MG were quantified in total nucleic acids. The assay was validated on sex-sorted …
