The Impact Of Goal Persistence And Willing To Compete On Community College Student Success In Developmental Math Coursework, Kerri Mcguire
The Impact Of Goal Persistence And Willing To Compete On Community College Student Success In Developmental Math Coursework, Kerri Mcguire
All Dissertations
Community college practitioners are seeking innovative approaches to improve student retention and completion rates while also demonstrating the value of a community college education for students, families, and communities. Developmental education for underprepared students is a focal point for institutional reform efforts to impact student success because developmental education programs receive criticism for being a hindrance to college completion. One such criticism is that colleges use ineffective course placement practices to place students into developmental course pathways that they are unlikely to complete. In response to this criticism, institutions have adopted course placement practices that utilize multiple measures to determine …

Sources Of Currency Depreciation In Ghana, Hilarious Edem Anku
Theses
This paper investigates the factors driving the real exchange rate in the Ghanaian economy. The paper aimed at finding the principal factor(s) that influence the real exchange rate and explains the channels by which these factors exert their influence using standard empirical methods of vector autoregressive (VAR) models. The paper established that inflation rate differentials and interest rate differentials influence the exchange rate through the expectations medium. Domestic and foreign money supplies which are exogenous macroeconomic variables were also found to be important in the Ghanaian money market as far as the exchange rate matters. The paper also highlighted how …

Termites have gained importance as major pests in cocoa agroforests. Proper identification of termite species and knowledge on their functional diversity are the first steps in developing environmentally compatible management strategies. We tested the hypothesis that patterns of termite species richness in different cocoa agroforests is related to responses by termite functional groups to changes in shade management. We compared termite assemblages under five cocoa agroforestry systems in Cameroon to assess the impact of shade on termite taxonomic and functional group diversity. Sampling was done using a modified standardized transect method. Two 30 × 30 m quadrates each divided into …

The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a devastating invasive pest of tomato crops in several areas around the world including Africa. Here, we comprehensively review and discuss the relevant scientific knowledge on its occurrence, biological and ecological aspects, fortuitous insect natural enemies, and potential advantages and constraints of pest management scenarios adopted against this pest in tomato crops in both Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa. We conclude the manuscript with a comprehensive research agenda providing future priorities towards sustainable control of this important tomato pest.

Bee viral ecology is a fascinating emerging area of research: viruses exert a range of effects on their hosts, exacerbate impacts of other environmental stressors, and, importantly, are readily shared across multiple bee species in a community. However, our understanding of bee viral communities is limited, as it is primarily derived from studies of North American and European Apis mellifera populations. Here, we examined viruses in populations of A. mellifera and 11 other bee species from 9 countries, across 4 continents and Oceania. We developed a novel pipeline to rapidly and inexpensively screen for bee viruses. This pipeline includes purification …

New Jersey Urban Development: Identifying Optimal Regions Within New Jersey's Pine Barren Forest For Urban Development Based On Wildfire Risk And The Wildland-Urban Interface Theory, Olivia Buchanan, Man Kumari Giri, Nicholas Mcvey, Mercedes Bartkovich
Perpetua: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at UAH
Population growth in New Jersey has led to increased use of land for residential purposes in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) of the south-central Pinelands region. Due to this increase in human activity, coupled with local environmental conditions, local authorities are concerned about an increased possibility of wildfires that could damage both the area’s infrastructure and ecosystem. To counteract this risk, it is necessary to develop methods for accurate wildfire assessment and mitigation efforts. This project partnered with the New Jersey Pinelands Commission (NJPC) to develop a Fire Risk Assessment Tool that identifies areas with high fire risk based on land …

Rack1 Facilitates Efficient Translation Of Viral And Cellular Iress, Natasha Permaul
Rack1 Facilitates Efficient Translation Of Viral And Cellular Iress, Natasha Permaul
Anthropology
Ribosomes, the cellular machinery that translates mRNA sequences into protein sequences, are surprisingly heterogeneous molecules. More and more ribosomal proteins have been shown to facilitate translation of mRNA subsets. These mRNA subsets include mRNAs that can initiate translation using non-canonical pathways, for example using an internal ribosome entry site (IRES). IRESs are RNA structures that facilitate translation with fewer translation initiation factors than are required for canonical cap-dependent translation initiation. The ribosomal protein Receptor for Activated C Kinase 1 (RACK1) has been previously shown to be required for translation of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) IRES, but not required for …

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of traditional age male college students that influence their persistence beyond the first year in college. This qualitative study uses Moustakas’ (1994) approach to transcendental or psychological phenomenology. The researcher collected data at two different small, private, 4-year liberal arts institutions situated in New York State. Semi-structured interviews were utilized as the primary source of data collection to capture the experiences and perceptions of traditional age (19 years old) male undergraduates, midway through their second year of college and enrolled full-time. This study uses Schlossberg’s (1981) transition theory …
Employee Soft Skills And Organizational Culture: An Exploratory Case Study, Eliyahu Lotzar
Employee Soft Skills And Organizational Culture: An Exploratory Case Study, Eliyahu Lotzar
Education Doctoral
Students seek higher education to obtain better employment. While employers value soft skills at least as much as academic knowledge, the soft skills literature is without consensus as to which of the many soft skills or employability skills employers value most, making it challenging for colleges to provide effective soft skills education. To organize employers’ many different soft skill preferences, this study explores organizational culture as a conceptual framework. Specifically, the case study explores values and characteristics common to one organization’s culture, to the soft skills that its executives and managers prefer their employees to possess, to employee beliefs regarding …

A Comparison Of Agent-Based Models And Equation Based Models For Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Elizabeth Hunter, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
Articles
There are two main methods that are used to model the spread of an infectious disease: agent-based modelling and equation based modelling. In this paper, we compare the results from an example implementation of each method, and show that although the agent-based model takes longer to setup and run, it provides additional information that is not available when using an equation based model. Specifically, the ability of the agent-based model to capture heterogeneous mixing and agent interactions enables it to give a better overall view of an outbreak. We compare the performance of both models by simulating a measles outbreak …

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Survivors of prostitution propose a policy reform platform including three main pillars of priority: criminal justice reforms, fair employment, and standards of care. The sexual exploitation of prostituted individuals has lasting effects which can carry over into many aspects of life. In order to remedy these effects and give survivors the opportunity to live a full and free life, we must use a survivor-centered approach to each of these pillars to create change. First, reform is necessary in the criminal justice system to recognize survivors as victims of crime and not perpetrators, while holding those who exploited them fully responsible. …

Paraprofessional Counselors' Perceptions Of Storybooks To Facilitate Children's Communication Following Parental Suicide, Lindsay Jacalyn Regehr
Theses and Dissertations
A parent's death it is one of the most stressful and traumatic events in a child's life (Guldin et al., 2015; Worden, 1996, 2008). In particular, when bereavement is linked to a parent's suicide, children face unique challenges and are more vulnerable to potentially negative outcomes (Brent, Melhem, Donohoe, & Walker, 2009; Haine, Ayers, Sandler, & Wolchik, 2008; Pitman, Osborn, King, & Erlangsen, 2014; Young et al., 2012). Although many factors influence children's recovery following a parent's suicide, the surviving parent's emotional stability and emotional availability to support their children are of critical importance. Additionally, negative outcomes are often linked …
