Local Disaster Planning And Preparedness Coordination In The Rio Grande Valley, Cristina L. Madrid Dec 2018

Local Disaster Planning And Preparedness Coordination In The Rio Grande Valley, Cristina L. Madrid

Theses and Dissertations

Hurricanes and flooding events yield complex social and environmental consequences to coastal communities. Disaster preparedness and recovery is a multidisciplinary and multi-jurisdictional effort that requires coordination and planning across many actors.

Existing research recognizes the link between social capital and a community’s ability to respond to and ‘bounce back’ to normalcy after such hazardous events. However, few studies have examined the institutional dimension of social capital among communities noted for high levels of poverty situated in disaster-prone areas along the U.S. Mexico border. We aim to fill this gap by using survey data collected from emergency management practitioners in the …

Does Machismo Culture Influence Latina/O Attitudes On Mental Health?, Amanda R. Mercado Dec 2018

Does Machismo Culture Influence Latina/O Attitudes On Mental Health?, Amanda R. Mercado

Theses and Dissertations

This study represents an attempt to contribute to the identified gap in knowledge towards the effects of machismo on both Latina women and Latino men and how it effects their attitudes towards mental health. The idea that previous research on machismo has been so one-sided, but has revealed that psychological distresses were present and ignored, leaves room for my research to explore how Latina women are affected because they are just as susceptible to psychological distresses as men. By using a research based framework to explain the effects of machismo on both Latina women and Latino men, my study will …

Women In The Legal Academy: A Brief History Of Feminist Legal Theory, Robin West Dec 2018

Women In The Legal Academy: A Brief History Of Feminist Legal Theory, Robin West

Fordham Law Review

Women’s entry into the legal academy in significant numbers—first as students, then as faculty—was a 1970s and 1980s phenomenon. During those decades, women in law schools struggled: first, for admission and inclusion as individual students on a formally equal footing with male students; then for parity in their numbers in classes and on faculties; and, eventually, for some measure of substantive equality across various parameters, including their performance and evaluation both in and in front of the classroom, as well as in the quality of their experiences as students and faculty members and in the benefits to be reaped from …

Executive Power, Drone Executions, And The Due Process Rights Of American Citizens, Jonathan G. D'Errico Dec 2018

Executive Power, Drone Executions, And The Due Process Rights Of American Citizens, Jonathan G. D'Errico

Fordham Law Review

Few conflicts have tested the mettle of procedural due process more than the War on Terror. Although fiery military responses have insulated the United States from another 9/11, the Obama administration’s 2011 drone execution of a U.S. citizen allegedly associated with al-Qaeda without formal charges or prosecution sparked public outrage. Judicial recognition that this nonbattlefield execution presented a plausible procedural due process claim ignited questions which continue to smolder today: What are the limits of executive war power? What constitutional privileges do American citizens truly retain in the War on Terror? What if the executive erred in its judgment and …

Public Dollars, Private Discrimination: Protecting Lgbt Students From School Voucher Discrimination, Adam Mengler Dec 2018

Public Dollars, Private Discrimination: Protecting Lgbt Students From School Voucher Discrimination, Adam Mengler

Fordham Law Review

More than a dozen states operate school voucher programs, which allow parents to apply state tax dollars to their children’s private school tuition. Many schools that participate in voucher programs are affiliated with religions that disapprove of homosexuality. As such, voucher-accepting schools across the country have admissions policies that discriminate against LGBT students and students with LGBT parents. Little recourse exists for students who suffer discrimination at the hands of voucher-accepting schools. This Note considers two ways to provide protection from such discrimination for LGBT students and ultimately argues that the best route is for an LGBT student to bring …

Better Inpatient Health Quality At Lower Cost: Should I Participate In The Online Healthcare Community First?, Kai Luo, Qiu-Hong Wang, Hock Hai Teo, Xi Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As policy makers across the globe look to health information technology (HIT) as a meansof improving the efficiency of the healthcare systems, it has sparked significant interestin understanding how HIT might help achieve that. While researchers have examined anddocumented the efficiency-improving effect of various institution HITs (e.g., electronicclinic pathways and telemedicine), the impacts of consumer HITs such as onlinehealthcare communities have been generally overlooked. Utilizing two unique datasetsfrom both an online healthcare community and a general hospital, we study the impactof online healthcare community on offline inpatient care efficiency. Through rigorousanalysis, we find that communications between physicians and patients on …

Sybmatch: Sybil Detection For Privacy-Preserving Task Matching In Crowdsourcing, Jiangang Shu, Ximeng Liu, Kan Yang, Yinghui Zhang, Xiaohua Jia, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The past decade has witnessed the rise of crowdsourcing, and privacy in crowdsourcing has also gained rising concern in the meantime. In this paper, we focus on the privacy leaks and sybil attacks during the task matching, and propose a privacy-preserving task matching scheme, called SybMatch. The SybMatch scheme can simultaneously protect the privacy of publishers and subscribers against semi-honest crowdsourcing service provider, and meanwhile support the sybil detection against greedy subscribers and efficient user revocation. Detailed security analysis and thorough performance evaluation show that the SybMatch scheme is secure and efficient.

Barriers To Mentoring Women Of Color For Corporate Leadership: Implications For Organizations, Donna Marie Smith Dec 2018

Barriers To Mentoring Women Of Color For Corporate Leadership: Implications For Organizations, Donna Marie Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Mentoring as a human capital development initiative is critical to leadership development for organizational sustainment. Previous research has identified that barriers to mentoring relationships for women of color in organizations exist, confirmed by the finding that a factor in barriers to corporate promotion for women is a lack of mentoring. This dissertation explores the implications that barriers to workplace mentoring relationships may have for organizations from the perspective of women of color. Findings suggest that barriers to mentoring relationships experienced and perceived by women of color have evolved in presentation or diminished since those found by previous research. This research …

The Role Of Athletic Scholarship On Suboptimal Performance In Baseline Concussion Testing, Lauren E. Goworowski Dec 2018

The Role Of Athletic Scholarship On Suboptimal Performance In Baseline Concussion Testing, Lauren E. Goworowski

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To date, there is a very limited amount of research regarding the topic of sandbagging (i.e., intentional poor performance) during concussion baseline testing in a collegiate athlete population. It is known that student-athletes may underreport their concussive symptoms so they can return to play more quickly, and may purposefully lower their baseline results to appear less impaired following a head injury so as to avoid exclusion from play (Echemendia & Cantu, 2003; Reilly 2011). At this point in time, it is difficult to make statements regarding sandbagging because the incidence of this behavior is unknown. Accordingly, this study had …

It was also found to be 50% as effective as the control antiobiotic …

Analysis And Classification Of 3-D Printed Collagen-Bioglass Matrices For Cellular Growth Utilizing Artificial Neural Networks, Trevor Schmitt Dec 2018

Analysis And Classification Of 3-D Printed Collagen-Bioglass Matrices For Cellular Growth Utilizing Artificial Neural Networks, Trevor Schmitt

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Recent advances have shown the influence of biomimetic design on modulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the role stiffness of it plays in cellular behavior. 2-D models for cellular growth poorly recapitulate the natural environment of cells, whereas application of a 3-D ECM model allows for a more biomimetic design for modeling cellular behavior. Integration of 45S5 Bioglass provides and osteostimulatory mineral component to these 3-D models, allowing for better mimicry of orthopedic design, affecting the mechanical and physiochemical properties of the ECM and leading to an increase in osteogenic behavior. 3-D Bioprinting allows for custom fabrication of …

Wind-Driven Setup, Roughness, And Drag Over A Depth- And Fetch-Limited Coastal Estuary, Jeffrey Allen Colvin Dec 2018

Wind-Driven Setup, Roughness, And Drag Over A Depth- And Fetch-Limited Coastal Estuary, Jeffrey Allen Colvin

Theses and Dissertations

The understanding of the momentum exchange across the air-sea interface is critical to accurately model and forecast wind speed, wave properties, setup, and circulation. This is particularly true for a restricted estuary, such as the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), where wind is the driving force behind water movement due to the limited number of direct ocean connections. Current atmospheric and hydrodynamic models use formulations of the drag coefficient and/or roughness length based on open ocean studies in which wave properties are not considered. This dissertation develops two parameterizations – one for wind setup and one for the drag coefficient – …

The Corrosion And Biofouling Characteristics Of Sealed Vs. Perforated Offshore Monopile Interiors: Experiment Design Comparing Corrosion And Environment Inside Steel Pipe, Monica M. Maher Dec 2018

The Corrosion And Biofouling Characteristics Of Sealed Vs. Perforated Offshore Monopile Interiors: Experiment Design Comparing Corrosion And Environment Inside Steel Pipe, Monica M. Maher

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses the need to improve on the existing methods for the corrosion control of the monopile interiors used to support wind powered turbines by incorporating a design that also enhances marine habitats and fisheries. Retrofitting monopile interiors with cathodic protection has been attempted on existing windfarms to mitigate corrosion, however, this can cause new problems including water acidification and hydrogen sulfide formation. Such chemistry changes can lead to unique localized corrosion concerns. This study investigated internal corrosion, chemistry and biofouling inside partially submerged hollow steel pipes. Watertight pipes with stagnant water inside were compared to pipes with holes …

Investigating Possible Scurvy In The Postclassic Maya Of Tipu, Emmalea Gomberg Dec 2018

Investigating Possible Scurvy In The Postclassic Maya Of Tipu, Emmalea Gomberg

Master's Theses

Although residing in a tropical environment, numerous researchers have posited the possibility of scurvy in the Maya in recent years. The historic population of Tipu in western Belize dating to AD 1541-1638 is one of the largest and best preserved Maya series, and was therefore evaluated for possible presence of scurvy since the diet appears typical of the pre-contact Petén populations. The temporal bones and greater wings of the sphenoid were analyzed for scorbutic activity in 143 individuals, along with periodontal disease and antemortem tooth loss to determine if there was a co-occurrence with scurvy.

Overall, 27% of the sample …

Pseudomonas/Brachypodium As A Model System For Studying Rhizosphere Plant Microbe Interactions Under Water Stress, Janiece Mcwilliams

Master's Theses

In contrast to well-studied mechanisms of drought tolerance in plants, the interactions between plants and their microbiome during water stress are still poorly understood. This missing knowledge is crucial for the exploitation of beneficial microbial communities to improve the sustainability of agriculture under changing climatic conditions. The research described here bridged this gap by focusing on the molecular interactions between beneficial rhizobacterium Pseudomonas synxantha 2-79 and annual grass Brachypodium distachyon Bd21. 2-79 exemplifies a group of rhizobacteria associated with dryland wheat, while B. distachyon originates from the Middle East and has emerged as a model for valuable biomass, food, forage, …

Review Of The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Amitriptyline Treatment For Canine Neuropathic Pain, Saikaew Sutayatram, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Piyasiri Glangosol Dec 2018

Review Of The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Amitriptyline Treatment For Canine Neuropathic Pain, Saikaew Sutayatram, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Piyasiri Glangosol

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Nowadays, the lifespan of pets has been increased by improvements in veterinary practice but age-related disorders are also increasing. Several nervous system attenuations are well-known to be the result of aging and/or pathological lesions. In many cases, neuropathic pain (NP) can develop and cause a significant impact on the clinical outcome and quality of life. With the difficulty in identification of the specific cause of NP, most NP management is planned according to clinical manifestations and recommended trial therapy. The drug of choice for trial therapy seems to be amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant with multiple effects on neurotransmitter receptors and …

Comparative Effect Of Dl-Methionine And Dl-Methionine Hydroxy Analogue Supplemented Diet On Productive Performance, Fat Accumulation And Lipid Profile In Blood Of Meat-Type Ducks, Chanwit Kaewtapee, Chaiyapoom Bunchasak Dec 2018

Comparative Effect Of Dl-Methionine And Dl-Methionine Hydroxy Analogue Supplemented Diet On Productive Performance, Fat Accumulation And Lipid Profile In Blood Of Meat-Type Ducks, Chanwit Kaewtapee, Chaiyapoom Bunchasak

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of DL-methionine (DLM) and DL-methionine hydroxy analogue (DL-MHA) supplementation on the growth performance, carcass quality, fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood of meat-type duck. Three hundred male Cherry Valley ducks were divided into 3 groups with 4 replications of 25 ducklings each. Each group was given a diet as follows: 1) basal diet, 2) basal diet + DLM, and 3) basal diet + DLMHA. The results show that dietary supplementation with DLM and DL-MHA increased body weight (P<0.01), feed intake (P<0.01) and pectoralis major (P<0.05), but decreased abdominal fat (P<0.01) when compared to the basal diet. Supplementation with DL-MHA also resulted in greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05), low-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) and cholesterol (P<0.05) in the blood compared to the DLM group, in addition to greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05) and high-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. Furthermore, supplementation with DLM was shown to lower the level of plasma uric acid (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. It is concluded that DL-MHA can promote the same productive performance in meat-type ducks as DLM, but the fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood was greater with the DL-MHA supplementation than with DLM. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of different effects between DL-MHA and DLM on the lipid metabolism in ducks should be further investigated.

Mitigating Memory Randomization Weaknesses Via Moving Target Defense, Sultan M. Aldossary Dec 2018

Mitigating Memory Randomization Weaknesses Via Moving Target Defense, Sultan M. Aldossary

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we address the problem of weakness of address space layout randomization. The address space randomization technique was proposed to make determining the address of a shared library more difficult since each instance of the program is loaded into a random base address. However, when address space randomization layout (ASLR) is implemented on a 32-bit system, an attacker can use a brute force attack to guess the address of the shared library. The main goal of the research described in this dissertation is to study the use of a dispatching algorithm and multiple back-end servers as a moving target …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Traditional infrastructure adaptation to extreme weather events (and now climate change) has typically been techno-centric and heavily grounded in robustness—the capacity to prevent or minimize disruptions via a risk-based approach that emphasizes control, armoring, and strengthening (e.g., raising the height of levees). However, climate and nonclimate challenges facing infrastructure are not purely technological. Ecological and social systems also warrant consideration to manage issues of overconfidence, inflexibility, interdependence, and resource utilization—among others. As a result, techno-centric adaptation strategies can result in unwanted tradeoffs, unintended consequences, and underaddressed vulnerabilities. Techno-centric strategies that lock-in today’s infrastructure systems to vulnerable future design, management, and …

Professional Problems: The Burden Of Producing The ‘Global’ Filipino Nurse, Yasmin Y. Ortiga Dec 2018

Professional Problems: The Burden Of Producing The ‘Global’ Filipino Nurse, Yasmin Y. Ortiga

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper investigates the challenges faced by nursing schools within migrant-sending nations, where teachers and school administrators face the task of producing nurse labor, not only for domestic health needs but employers beyond national borders. I situate my research in the Philippines, one of the leading sources of migrant nurse labor in the world. Based on 58 interviews with nursing school instructors and administrators, conducted from 2010 to 2013, I argue that Philippine nursing schools are embedded within a global nursing care chain, where nations lower down the chain must supply nurse labor to wealthier countries higher up the chain. …
