No. 19: Food Insecurity And Alternative Food Networks In Cities Of The Global South, Gareth Haysom Dec 2018

No. 19: Food Insecurity And Alternative Food Networks In Cities Of The Global South, Gareth Haysom

Hungry Cities Partnership

Using the concept of Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), this discussion paper interrogates these networks and asks how they manifest in the context of food insecurity in cities of the global South. AFNs evident in Northern cities generally present a perspective of the food system that prioritises sustainability and a deep green and often local ethic, embodying aspirations of food system change. In Southern cities, food system engagement is less about engagement for change, but rather to enable food access. Traditional value chain parlance sees a value chain extending from producer to consumer. Drawing on research from food security studies carried …

No. 20: Cross-Platform Food Shopping And Household Food Access In Nanjing, China, Cameron Mccordic, Zhenzhong Si, Taiyang Zhong

Hungry Cities Partnership

Modern urban food systems have evolved into international, multi-scalar and complex networks. The historical evolution of the food system in Nanjing, China, exemplifies this complexity. Nanjing’s food system has undergone successive waves of modernization, bringing changes in consumer food sourcing behaviour along with it. Using household survey data, this investigation assesses the cross-platform food sourcing behaviour of households in Nanjing to untangle some of the complex relationships linking food retailers to consumers in the city. The findings indicate that the surveyed households largely prefer purchasing fresh food from wet markets over prepared food from fast food retailers, restaurants and online …

No. 21: Urban Informal Food Deserts In Windhoek, Namibia, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe, Jonathan Crush

Hungry Cities Partnership

Informal settlements in rapidly-growing African cities are urban and peri-urban spaces with high rates of formal unemployment, poverty, poor health outcomes, limited service provision and chronic food insecurity. Traditional concepts of food deserts developed to describe North American and European cities do not accurately capture the realities of food inaccessibility in Africa’s urban informal food deserts. This paper focuses on a case study of informal settlements in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, to shed further light on the relationship between informality and food deserts in African cities. The data for the paper was collected in 2016 and involved a survey of …

Analyzing Large Workers’ Compensation Claims Using Generalized Linear Models And Monte Carlo Simulation, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Steven A. Freeman, Gretchen A. Mosher Dec 2018

Analyzing Large Workers’ Compensation Claims Using Generalized Linear Models And Monte Carlo Simulation, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Steven A. Freeman, Gretchen A. Mosher

General Engineering

Insurance practitioners rely on statistical models to predict future claims in order to provide financial protection. Proper predictive statistical modeling is more challenging when analyzing claims with lower frequency, but high costs. The paper investigated the use of predictive generalized linear models (GLMs) to address this challenge. Workers’ compensation claims with costs equal to or more than US$100,000 were analyzed in agribusiness industries in the Midwest of the USA from 2008 to 2016. Predictive GLMs were built with gamma, Weibull, and lognormal distributions using the lasso penalization method. Monte Carlo simulation models were developed to check the performance of predictive …

Fingerprint Database Privacy Guard: An Open-Source System That Secures Fingerprints With Locality Sensitive Hashing Algorithms, Enrique Sanchez

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Fingerprint identification is one of the most accurate sources of identification, yet it is not widely used in public facilities for security concerns. Moreover, the cost of fingerprint system is inaccessible for small-budget business because of their high cost. Therefore, this study created an open-source solution to secure fingerprint samples in the database while using low-cost hardware components. Locality Sensitive Hashing Algorithms such as ORB and Image hash were compared in this study as a potential alternative to SURF. To test the design, fifteen samples were collected and stored in a database without verifying the quality of the samples. Then, …

Conservative Management Of A Complete Rupture Of The Long Head Of The Biceps: A Case Report, Ali Woller Dec 2018

Conservative Management Of A Complete Rupture Of The Long Head Of The Biceps: A Case Report, Ali Woller

Case Report Papers

Background/Purpose: The long head of the biceps plays an important role stabilizing the shoulder. Most of the current literature supports surgical intervention following a complete rupture, but there is little evidence that supports conservative management. Due to a lack of evidence supporting conservative management of a complete rupture of the long head of the biceps, the purpose of this case study was to evaluate the progress this patient made over a six-week period with outpatient physical therapy addressing his impairments resulting from his injury. Case Description: The patient was a 51-year-old male with a confirmed diagnosis of a complete rupture …

Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is a disabling condition defined by a progressive loss of upper extremity (UE) range of motion (ROM) and leading to limitations in functional mobility. The purpose of this case report is to investigate the implementation of medical therapeutic yoga (MTY) in combination with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise in the treatment of a patient with AC. Case Description: The patient was a 51-year-old female with left shoulder AC and associated deficits in ROM, strength, and functional …

Gait Training A Patient Who Was Deaf With Multiple Total Hip Revisions: A Case Report, Natalie Slattery, Kirsten Buchanan Dec 2018

Gait Training A Patient Who Was Deaf With Multiple Total Hip Revisions: A Case Report, Natalie Slattery, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

93% of patients who have a total hip arthroplasty (THA) are due to end-stage osteoarthritis. 15-30% of patients who survive a stroke continue to live with a long-term disability. The most common abnormal gait pattern after surviving a stroke is due to hemiparesis. Patients who are deaf require greater visual and tactile cueing during gait training. Gait training has been shown to normalize gait patterns and increase functional mobility in patients after a total hip replacement (THR), THA revision and/or stroke. There is a lack of research investigating the optimal gait training plan of care (POC) for a patient with …

Conservative Management Of A Complete Rupture Of The Long Head Of The Biceps: A Case Report, Ali Woller Dec 2018

Conservative Management Of A Complete Rupture Of The Long Head Of The Biceps: A Case Report, Ali Woller

Case Report Posters

The purpose of this case study was to assess conservative management of a complete rupture of the long head of the biceps over a six-week period. The long head of the biceps (LHB) stabilizes the shoulder by reducing anteroposterior and superior inferior translation of the humeral head in the glenoid fossa. A tear of the LHB most commonly occurs when the biceps is suddenly loaded against flexion and supination of the elbow. Surgical repair of the LHB has seen 94% satisfaction rates, but with complications. Fifty-six percent of patients who initially chose conservative methods ultimately choose surgery. There is a …

Intra-Rater & Inter-Rater Reliability In 2nd Year Dpt Students Performing The Navicular Drop Test, Kirsten Buchanan, Nick Allard, David Buchan, Mike Curtin, Andrew Dipartolo

Research Report Posters

The Navicular Drop Test (NDT) is used as a clinical measure of mid-foot pronation. Objective measurements are rooted in the trust of the tool. When utilizing the NDT, the tool is the practicing clinician. Research has revealed that experienced clinicians have good-excellent intra- and inter-rater reliability when measuring navicular drop (ND). Current data reports ~25,000 practicing US PTs have < 3 years experience. There is limited research exploring the intra- and inter-rater reliability of less experienced DPTs when performing the NDT. The purpose of this research report was to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of three 2nd year DPT students.

The Social Value Of Seiu Women, Alex Rothfelder Dec 2018

The Social Value Of Seiu Women, Alex Rothfelder

Sustainability and Social Justice

This paper analyzes women in health care unions by specifically examining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) as a case study. Moreover, this paper asks: what motivates these health care workers; is it primarily patient care, or are there other significant issues? How do workers think about their product of care, and how does this affect unionism? And how is gender connected to these issues? After interviewing six health care workers in SEIU, this paper found that the motivation of health care workers is partially motivated by patient issues, but that this occurs in a negative sense. Union organizational limitations …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Alzheimer’S Dementia With Positron Emission Tomography Imaging: A Case Report, Paul G. Harch, Edward F. Fogarty

Radiology Faculty Publications

A 58-year-old female was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia (AD) which was rapidly progressive in the 8 months prior to initiation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). 18Fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) brain imaging demonstrated global and typical metabolic deficits in AD (posterior temporal-parietal watershed and cingulate areas). An 8-week course of HBOT reversed the patient’s symptomatic decline. Repeat PET imaging demonstrated a corresponding 6.5–38% regional and global increase in brain metabolism, including increased metabolism in the typical AD diagnostic areas of the brain. Continued HBOT in conjunction with standard pharmacotherapy maintained the patient’s symptomatic level of function over an ensuing …
