Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists’ Perception Of Simulation As A Positive Reinforcement To Classroom Lecture In Handling A Difficult Airway, Kayla Forbis
Doctoral Projects
The management of a difficult airway by anesthesia providers is a core component of providing safe care. Simulation provides an opportunity for the student to manage uncommon clinical scenarios without harm to an actual patient. This project aimed to determine if the use of simulation may be useful in training Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the management skills of a difficult airway. The proposed intervention of this project was the addition of simulation experience to didactic lecture covering difficult airway management techniques. As supported in the Adult Learning Principles of Medical Learners, by allowing the SRNA to actively participate in …
Drug Diversion Reporting And Response: A Policy Analysis, Lauren Roberts
Drug Diversion Reporting And Response: A Policy Analysis, Lauren Roberts
Doctoral Projects
Despite the significant improvements made to address addiction and drug diversion by healthcare personnel, the issue continues to be problematic for most healthcare facilities. Current literature suggests that healthcare institutions incorporate early drug diversion and addiction education, implementation of effective policies and procedures, and continuous drug screening will strongly aid in decreasing the prevalence of drug diversion by healthcare providers.
Among all the different types of healthcare providers, anesthesia providers continue to be at a disproportionately higher risk for addiction and drug diversion when compared to other providers (AANA, 2016). The stress of a demanding profession, personality, and easy access …
Following Epidural Pca Use, Do Obstetric Patients Feel Satisfied With Their Pain Control, James Mcrae
Following Epidural Pca Use, Do Obstetric Patients Feel Satisfied With Their Pain Control, James Mcrae
Doctoral Projects
ABSTRACT
Pain is a source of anxiety for many patients, and uncontrolled pain can have deleterious effects on patient outcomes (Patak et al., 2014). Pain associated with labor is a particular concern of obstetric patients. Epidural analgesia is currently the frontline treatment for pain associated with labor, with epidural patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) often being utilized (Braveman, Scavone, Blessing, & Wong, 2013). Little evidence exists that details what factors of epidural PCA that patients considered important (Patak et al., 2014). In this project, a randomized questionnaire was administered to obstetric patients to assess satisfaction levels with their epidural PCA. The questionnaire …

American Dream Gone Wrong: Patricia Highsmith’S Dark Suburban Domesticity, Katie Liggett
American Dream Gone Wrong: Patricia Highsmith’S Dark Suburban Domesticity, Katie Liggett
Honors Projects
This thesis explores how Patricia Highsmith’s novels, The Blunderer and Deep Water, critique the American suburbs and show how the American Dream is more of a fantasy, than a realistic goal that people can achieve. Her novels reveal how the American dream becomes unattainable, or one’s pursuit of it somehow goes wrong, leaving their lives unfulfilled and them resentful. Furthermore, I argue that the American Dream, itself, goes wrong for some individuals, and the pursuit of this unrealistic Dream can lead individuals to trouble in their personal or professional lives. Ultimately, through my analysis of Highsmith’s texts, it becomes …

The Roles Of Non-Governmental Organizations In Promoting Poverty Alleviation In Cambodia, Laos And Vietnam, I Younan An
Honors Capstones
The objective of this research is to examine the three different roles that NGOs have undertaken to effectively alleviate poverty in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. First, NGOs undertook the roles of developer, where they involved heavily in organizing and implemented local educational, agricultural, livelihood, nutritional and health programs. Second, NGOs acted as a provision of social services to the local communities by providing funds and support to establish community stores or community clinics or to households and providing health and counselling services. Third, NGOs encouraged and facilitated participatory development in in the local communities to allow the local citizens’ voices …

Using Wearable Biomarker Technology To Determine The Effectiveness Of Assistive Technology Supports On The Anxiety And Writing Outcomes Of Students With Disabilities, Angela M. Lobdell
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this Capstone project is to determine the effects writing has on stress levels of students with anxiety-related disorders and to investigate the effectiveness of technology-based writing interventions to reduce anxiety and increase writing output when being utilized by students. One male and three females between the ages of 14-17 participated in the research. Each participant wore a biomarker device that allowed the researchers to track the participants' levels of anxiety. The levels transmitted by the biomarker would indicate a state of calm, focused, tense and neutral. Baseline involved observing students writing without technology supports. Upon completion of …
Peruvian Pinnipeds As Archivists Of Enso Effects, Mickie Rae Edwards
Peruvian Pinnipeds As Archivists Of Enso Effects, Mickie Rae Edwards
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Environmental fluctuations in the eastern Pacific Ocean are reflected in the tissues of some of its most vulnerable apex predators, the Peruvian fur seal (PFS) Arctocephalus australis ssp.and the South American sea lion (SASL) Otaria byronia. These large pinnipeds live in sympatry along the Pacific coastline of South America and forage within the neritic waters over the continental shelf. The coastal waters off Peru are a region of great environmental fluctuations due to periodic, oscillating El Niño- La Niña- Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, which result in ecosystem-wide food web changes. Pinniped vibrissae (whiskers) are continuously growing keratinous tissues and …

Elevating The Head Of Bed During Preoxygenation For Obese Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: A Clinical Policy Proposal, Brian F. Seymour Jr.
Elevating The Head Of Bed During Preoxygenation For Obese Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: A Clinical Policy Proposal, Brian F. Seymour Jr.
Doctoral Projects
Preoxygenation plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety for all patient populations, especially those considered clinically obese. The negative pathophysiological effects obesity has related to body habitus and respiratory mechanics increases the risk of unexpected adverse events. Obese patients encounter a 50% decrease in functional residual capacity (FRC) when undergoing general anesthesia. Dixon et al., (2005) addressed the link between efficient oxygenation and improving oxygen storage by lessening atelectasis and intrapulmonary shunting via preoxygenation in a more upright position. Can standardizing preoxygenation techniques among anesthesia providers improve patient safety and decrease hospital system’s risk by implementing an evidence-based clinical …
Best Practice Policy Recommendation For Neuraxial Anesthesia Skin Antiseptic Solutions, Kyle Adams
Best Practice Policy Recommendation For Neuraxial Anesthesia Skin Antiseptic Solutions, Kyle Adams
Doctoral Projects
A clinical affiliate hospital in Mississippi lacked a best practice clinical policy regarding the most appropriate skin preparation solution to use prior to neuraxial anesthesia. The evidence showed that alcoholic chlorhexidine is the optimal solution due to advanced characteristics which help reduce infection. Reducing infections can potentially reduce further complications for the patient, hospitalization length, and cost. Also, chlorhexidine was found safe to use for neuraxial anesthesia if cross-contamination is avoided and adequate drying time is allowed. Lastly, alcoholic povidone-iodine is an appropriate alternate if 0.5% chlorhexidine is unavailable.
A best practice clinical policy was formulated and presented to a …

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. There is an urgent need to discover new antibiotics to combat these drug resistant infections. The MEP pathway is essential to most bacteria and not found in humans which makes it a desirable target for novel antibiotic discovery. The IspF enzyme is the fifth enzyme in the MEP pathway. Screening of a library of approximately 3000 compounds by the Hagen group identified several sulfa drugs that were ligands for the IspF enzyme. The purpose of this research was to synthesize sulfonamide derivative compounds for IspF inhibition. In …

Healthy Food Options At Dollar Discount Stores Are Equivalent In Quality And Lower In Price Compared To Grocery Stores: An Examination In Las Vegas, Nv, Courtney Coughenour, Timothy J. Bungum, M. Nikki Regalado
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Food deserts indicate limited access to and affordability of healthy foods. One potential mediator is the availability of healthy food in non-traditional outlets such as dollar-discount stores, stores selling produce at the fixed $1 price. The purpose of this study was to compare availability, quality, price differences in ‘healthier’ versus ‘regular’ food choices, price per each food item, and summary score in dollar-discount stores to grocery stores in Las Vegas using the NEMS-S; a protocol consisting of three subscores—availability, quality, price of healthier versus regular food, and a summary score.
