Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Internet addiction (IA) is classified as a compulsive-impulsive behavior disorder involving excessive use of the internet, withdrawal, tolerance, and negative repercussions (Block, 2007). Internet usage is becoming more widespread across all industrialized people, and younger people are using the internet more and more as it becomes more ubiquitous (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). The purpose of the current study is to investigate internet usage habits, sleep disturbance, and IA as it appeared in a national United States sample, and a sample seeking clinical psychological help in the Southwestern United States. The results of the current study suggested that IA predicted …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji Dec 2018

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

The 21st century has seen a dramatic acceleration in the evolution of bacterial resistance. Many classes of commercial antibiotics, including most current commercial β-lactams, were structurally optimized to counter 20th century pathogens. The carbapenems represent the most potent and broadest spectrum of the β-lactams, representing crucial last line agents to treat lifethreatening infections. While the 21st century has seen the appearance of carbapenem-resistant strains, the basic substitution pattern of commercial carbapenem antibiotics has remained constant, other than minor modifications at the C2 position. This research will investigate whether substitution at an atypical carbapenem position, the C5 position, can improve the …

Racial Integration And White Supremacy In America: Can America Integrate Its Power Structures And Liberate Them From White Supremacy, Billy Lane Dec 2018

Racial Integration And White Supremacy In America: Can America Integrate Its Power Structures And Liberate Them From White Supremacy, Billy Lane

Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations

Neither the presence of black people in predominantly white spaces nor the appropriation of black culture are indicators of racial justice. Power structures must be integrated even more so than subdivisions, classrooms, breakrooms, church pews, and pop culture. This thesis will explore the absence of African-American leadership from the highest ranks of our power structures that are central to contemporary life and the dynamics within each of these power structures that help to protect white supremacy and therefore maintain segregation.

Between Developed And Emerging Markets: Globalization Of Large Consumer Good Enterprises, Christine Savino Ms. Dec 2018

Between Developed And Emerging Markets: Globalization Of Large Consumer Good Enterprises, Christine Savino Ms.

Honors Scholar Theses

A few years ago, The Economist promulgated that “the only way that companies can prosper in [emerging] markets is to cut costs relentlessly and accept profit margins close to zero” (The Economist, 2010). Likewise, according to the World Bank’s 2018 Ease of Doing Business Index[1], the least ranked countries (#94 and under out of 190 countries) are solely undeveloped and developing, while the top 20 countries are solely developed economies (World Bank, 2018). It has been long held that emerging markets[2][3] are non-strategic investments for multinational expansion, and that business giants from …

Nanopower Analog Frontends For Cyber-Physical Systems, Kenji Aono Dec 2018

Nanopower Analog Frontends For Cyber-Physical Systems, Kenji Aono

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

In a world that is increasingly dominated by advances made in digital systems, this work will explore the exploiting of naturally occurring physical phenomena to pave the way towards a self-powered sensor for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). In general, a sensor frontend can be broken up into a handful of basic stages: transduction, filtering, energy conversion, measurement, and interfacing. One analog artifact that was investigated for filtering was the physical phenomenon of hysteresis induced in current-mode biquads driven near or at their saturation limit. Known as jump resonance, this analog construct facilitates a higher quality factor to be brought about without …

Combining Footprinting Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulation For Structural Studies In Membrane Proteins, Fengbo Zhou Dec 2018

Combining Footprinting Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulation For Structural Studies In Membrane Proteins, Fengbo Zhou

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Membrane proteins are essential in many cellular processes and represent ~60% of all current drug targets. Due to technical limits, membrane proteins of various types were not studied extensively in the past and the biochemistry and functionality of them remain unclear. The structural biology methodologies require pure isolated protein samples for us to resolve their structure and study their biochemical functions. For such in vitro studies, however, membrane proteins often become unstable when isolated from their native lipid bilayer environment. To overcome the challenge, I employed a novel methodology of solubilizing membrane proteins in solution without detergent. I reconstituted ferroportin, …

Modeling The Bioactivation And Subsequent Reactivity Of Drugs, Tyler Brian Hughes Dec 2018

Modeling The Bioactivation And Subsequent Reactivity Of Drugs, Tyler Brian Hughes

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Metabolism can convert drugs to harmful reactive metabolites that conjugate to DNA and off-target proteins. Reactive metabolites are a significant driver of both drug candidate attrition and withdrawal from the market of already approved drugs. Unfortunately, reactive metabolites are difficult to study in vivo, because they are transitory and generally do not circulate. Instead, this work computationally models both metabolism and reactivity. Using deep learning, predictive models were developed for the metabolic formation of quinones and epoxides, which together account for about half of known reactive metabolites. Additionally, an accurate model of DNA and protein reactivity was constructed, which predicts …

Genetic Basis Of Thermal Divergence In Saccharomyces Species, Xueying C. Li Dec 2018

Genetic Basis Of Thermal Divergence In Saccharomyces Species, Xueying C. Li

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The genetic architecture of phenotypic divergence is a central question in evolutionary biology. Genetic architecture is impacted by whether evolution occurs through accumulation of many small-effect or a few large-effect changes, the relative contribution of coding and cis-regulatory changes, and the prevalence of epistatic effects. Our empirical understanding of the genetic basis of evolutionary change remains incomplete, largely because reproductive barriers limit genetic analysis to those phenotypes that distinguish closely related species. In this dissertation, I use hybrid genetic analysis to examine the basis of thermal divergence between two post-zygotically isolated species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. uvarum. S. cerevisiae is …

A Recombinant Virus And Reporter Mouse System To Study Chronic Chikungunya Virus Pathogenesis, Alissa Roxanne Young Dec 2018

A Recombinant Virus And Reporter Mouse System To Study Chronic Chikungunya Virus Pathogenesis, Alissa Roxanne Young

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an arthritogenic alphavirus that during acute disease causes fever as well as severe joint and muscle pain. Chronic joint and muscle pain persists in a significant subset of patients, yet we still have a poor understanding of what drives this chronic disease. While replicating virus has not been detected in the joints of patients with chronic arthritis or in various animal models at chronic time points, persistent viral RNA can be detected for months after acute infection. To identify the cells that could be contributing to chronic CHIKV pathogenesis, we developed recombinant viruses that express Cre recombinase …

Neural Mechanisms Of Drosophila Circadian Rhythms, Xitong Liang Dec 2018

Neural Mechanisms Of Drosophila Circadian Rhythms, Xitong Liang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Animals show circadian rhythms in a variety of physiological functions and behaviors. In Drosophila melanogaster, behavioral rhythms are driven by circadian clock genes that are oscillating in ~150 circadian pacemaker neurons. To explain how circadian neurons encode time and regulate different behavioral rhythms, I performed 24-hour in vivo whole-brain calcium imaging using light-sheet microscopy. First, I found that different groups of circadian neurons show circadian rhythms in spontaneous neural activity with diverse phases. The neural activity phases of the M and E pacemaker groups, which are associated with the morning and evening locomotor activities respectively, occur ~4 hours before their …

Singing As A Therapeutic Technique To Improve Gait For People With Parkinson Disease, Elinor Harrison

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Abstract of the DissertationSinging as a Therapeutic Technique toImprove Gait for People with Parkinson DiseasebyElinor Clare HarrisonDoctor of Philosophy in Movement ScienceNeurosciencesWashington University in St. Louis, 2018Professor Gammon Earhart, ChairGait impairment is common in older adults and even more prevalent for people with Parkinson disease (PD). Gait dysfunction is often characterized by reductions in speed, step frequency, and step length. In addition, decreased ability to regulate step length and step frequency may contribute to increased gait variability, making walking less stable and increasing risk for falls. As gait deficits are often resistant to drug therapy, there is a need to …

The Effect Of Talker And Contextual Variability On Memory For Words In Sentences, Nichole Runge Dec 2018

The Effect Of Talker And Contextual Variability On Memory For Words In Sentences, Nichole Runge

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has found that adding different forms of variability during study can affect later memory at test. For example, having words spoken by different talkers has been shown to improve recall of known and novel words (Goldinger et al., 1999; Barcroft & Sommers, 2005), and varying the cues in cue-target related word pairs has been found to improve recall of the targets (Glenberg, 1979; Bevan et al., 1966). It was unclear, however, whether benefits of variability would extend to more naturalistic stimuli, such as sentences, which have higher working memory demands. The present set of experiments investigated how talker …

Neural And Behavioral Associations Of Drinking And Empathic Processing, Charles Samuel Henry Robinson Dec 2018

Neural And Behavioral Associations Of Drinking And Empathic Processing, Charles Samuel Henry Robinson

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a major health problem, yet most individuals with AUD do not perceive a need for formal treatment and do not receive treatment. The lack of treatment seeking among individuals with AUD may suggest a lack of self-awareness and insight into the seriousness of AUD related problems. Moreover, individuals who have lost or are at risk of losing major relationships are especially likely to perceive the need for help. Thus, it may be the case that awareness of the influence of one’s drinking on social relationships and the feelings of others (i.e., empathy) could improve treatment …

Making Space For Makerspace: How Adding A Makerspace Can Benefit Art Museum Education Programming, Kaeleigh Thorp Dec 2018

Making Space For Makerspace: How Adding A Makerspace Can Benefit Art Museum Education Programming, Kaeleigh Thorp

Master's Projects and Capstones

In this capstone project, I advocate for adding makerspaces to art museum education programming. I review the foundational educational concepts of a makerspace which help explain why it is a modern strategy to increasing visitor learning. This includes John Dewey’s theories of experience and education, Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory, George Hein’s studies of museum visitor behavior, and the physiological science of learning. I then propose four key terms essential for visitor learning, and explain how makerspaces successfully incorporate them. The four key terms are: 1. multiple intelligences, 2. direct experience, 3. inquiry based and open ended learning, and 4. …

The Relationship Between Challenge Courses And The, Christopher Luna Dec 2018

The Relationship Between Challenge Courses And The, Christopher Luna

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

There has been an increasing demand among education agencies to utilize challenge courses, also known as ropes courses, for personal growth opportunities among students of all ages. Teachers often tell students how they want students to work as a “team” and “get along” without providing the experiences for them to practice such behaviors. A low ropes experience allows students to practice cooperative skills. The focus of garnering participants for this study was to identify a specific target of first-generation college students from two separate classroom settings. The research focused on identifying the relationship between first-generation college students and low ropes …

Factors That Impact Direct Democracy And Voter Turnout: Evidence From A National Study On American Counties, Michael Joseph Biesiada Dec 2018

Factors That Impact Direct Democracy And Voter Turnout: Evidence From A National Study On American Counties, Michael Joseph Biesiada

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation examines factors that impact citizen initiatives and voter turnout. The dissertation contains two parts that build upon each other with fitting theoretical frameworks. The first part investigates the decision for a county government to permit citizen initiatives. This part applies new institutionalism theory as a framework to examine county governance, autonomy, and decision-making. County governments play a vital role in American politics, yet little is known about why some counties permit citizen initiatives while others do not. I address a gap in the literature that focuses on policy outcomes that vary at the county-level due to election laws. …

Associations Between Opioid-Related Hospitalizations And Intravenous Drug Users, Jacklynn De Leon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The opioid epidemic has led to a chain reaction of public health concerns, including an increase in heroin usage, injection drug abuse, incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV), and HIV transmission. There have been few population-based studies investigating the clinical and socio- demographic data associated with opioid use in Nevada (Feng et al., 2016; Frank, 2000) and few studies investigating the intravenous drug user (IDU) population in Clark County. On February 2017, Clark County’s first syringe exchange program (SEP) opened its doors to the IDU population. This study provides an updated analysis of opioid-related injuries within Nevada and provides a …
