Improving Lead Screening In A Pediatric Practice: A Quality Improvement Project, Audrey Myers

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Abstract

Background: Detectable lead levels in children’s blood have been associated with increased cognitive difficulties, attention deficits, and poorer academic performance. Children enrolled in Medicaid have higher rates of elevated blood lead levels, yet requirements to test all children at age 1 and 2 who are enrolled in Medicaid are not being met. Nationally, 34% of children enrolled in Medicaid do not undergo proper blood lead level screening. The aim of this project was to increase required blood lead level screening rates for children with Medicaid insurance at a private pediatric practice in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.

An Interdisciplinary Code Sepsis Team To Improve Sepsis Bundle Compliance In The Emergency Department, Jill M. Delawder

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Purpose: Sepsis is one of the leading causes of mortality with over 700,000 hospitalizations and 200,000 deaths annually. Various tools exist to aid in the early identification and treatment of sepsis including electronic alert systems, standardized order sets, nurse-initiated protocols and specialty trained teams. Despite available guidelines, mortality rates for severe sepsis and septic shock are near 50%.

Methods: The aims of this rapid cycle quality improvement project were 1) to develop and implement an interdisciplinary team to address early implementation of evidence-based sepsis bundles in the emergency department and 2) to compare sepsis bundle compliance three months pre-and three …

An Analysis Of Interprofessional Rounds Effect On Readmission Rates And Patient Satisfaction, Cynthia Atkinson Dec 2018

An Analysis Of Interprofessional Rounds Effect On Readmission Rates And Patient Satisfaction, Cynthia Atkinson

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Evidence supports an interprofessional approach to patient care reduces readmissions, mortality, costs, and length of stay while simultaneously increasing communication, collaboration, and satisfaction of care providers and patients (Vazirani, S., et al, 2005). The health care team in an acute care setting, especially direct patient care providers such as nurses and ancillary disciplines must assess the discharge needs of patients from admission to the hospital until discharge disposition (Zakzesky, Klink, McAndrew, Schroeter, & Johnson, 2015). The purpose of this study was to determine if interprofessional rounds improved patient satisfaction and reduced readmission rates. The interprofessional team consisted of the hospitalists, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Abstract

Efficient throughput processes are a vital part of providing cost effective, safe, quality patient care. Research has shown interprofessional rounds can have success at improving throughput processes. A rural, not-for-profit, 255 bed hospital in a Mid-Atlantic State was experiencing issues with throughput/patient flow. The aims of this quality improvement project were 1). to implement Interprofessional Rounds on the Progressive Care Unit (PCU); 2). To design and build a working Interprofessional Rounds template into meditech to guide Interprofessional Rounds and streamline discharge documentation; 3). to increase the amount of discharge orders entered between 0700 and 1300 by ten percent; and …

Effects Of A Crisis Intervention Team Assessment Center On Emergency Department Length Of Stay, Carlissa Lam Dec 2018

Effects Of A Crisis Intervention Team Assessment Center On Emergency Department Length Of Stay, Carlissa Lam

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Introduction: Emergency departments are overburdened with mental health patients who lack adequate access to behavioral health resources. The influx of patients has led to an increased length of stay in the emergency department for patients who are being evaluated for mental health concerns. Overcrowding can lead to delays in treatment, undesirable medical events, and patient mortality. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) models bring law enforcement, mental health providers, emergency departments, and individuals with mental illness together to improve care for patients in crisis. They have been instrumental in identifying patients in crisis and transporting them to a Crisis Intervention Team Assessment …

Evaluating The Legality Of Age-Based Criteria In Health Care: From Nondiscrimination And Discretion To Distributive Justice, Govind Persad Dec 2018

Evaluating The Legality Of Age-Based Criteria In Health Care: From Nondiscrimination And Discretion To Distributive Justice, Govind Persad

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Recent disputes over whether older people should pay more for health insurance, or receive lower priority for transplantable organs, highlight broader disagreements regarding the legality of using age-based criteria in health care. These debates will likely intensify given the changing age structure of the American population and the turmoil surrounding the financing of American health care. This Article provides a comprehensive examination of the legality and normative desirability of age-based criteria. In the Article, I defend a distributive justice approach to age-based criteria. Rather than viewing age as a personal characteristic akin to race or religion, the distributive justice approach …

Pharmaceutical Territories: Contested Pharmacopoeias And Environmental Debates In Brazil, Kerri Brown Dec 2018

Pharmaceutical Territories: Contested Pharmacopoeias And Environmental Debates In Brazil, Kerri Brown

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 30 years, emergent global health and trade policies have transformed "traditional medicine" into a contested biomedical endeavor. Brazil has been particularly affected by these policies due to its vast biodiversity and numerous labelled as traditional. As a result, the country has implemented strict intellectual property laws, has begun to invest in federal research on medicinal plants and other forms of traditional medicine, and in 2009 established its National Program of Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapeutics based on the World Health Organization's traditional medicine program, integrating medicinal plants into Brazil's national healthcare system. This multi-sited ethnographic project compares the …

Dignity In Decision-Making: Modernity And Social Navigation Among Rural French Polynesian Youth, Laura Jarvis Dec 2018

Dignity In Decision-Making: Modernity And Social Navigation Among Rural French Polynesian Youth, Laura Jarvis

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

This research examines critical questions about the experiences of youth through the lenses of modernity, subjectivity, and the lifecourse. Growing up in a (post)colonial context of shifting definitions of adulthood, youth from the rural island of Rurutu, French Polynesia must navigate various decisions and transformations with little information to base their future aspirations on. This dissertation identifies dignity as the main motivating factor in youth decision-making, one that is constantly redefined as youth navigate shifting social fields. Dignity, as used here, is a target youth strive for in order to contest feelings of social precarity stemming from unaccommodating education systems …

Maroon Archaeology Beyond The Americas: A View From Kenya, Lydia Wilson Marshall Dec 2018

Maroon Archaeology Beyond The Americas: A View From Kenya, Lydia Wilson Marshall

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

Archaeological research on Maroons—that is, runaway slaves—has been largely confined to the Americas. This essay advocates a more global approach. It specifically uses two runaway slave communities in 19th-century coastal Kenya to rethink prominent interpretive themes in the field, including “Africanisms,” Maroons’ connections to indigenous groups, and Maroon group cohesion and identity. This article’s analysis demonstrates that the comparisons enabled by a more globalized perspective benefit the field. Instead of eliding historical and cultural context, these comparisons support the development of more localized and historically specific understandings of individual runaway slave communities both in Kenya and throughout the New World.

Measuring Housing And Population Densities In Dublin City & County, Paul J. Lawlor Mr, Max Mcgovern, Hugo Fitzpatrick, Carl Wessels Dec 2018

Measuring Housing And Population Densities In Dublin City & County, Paul J. Lawlor Mr, Max Mcgovern, Hugo Fitzpatrick, Carl Wessels

Articles

A key strategic objective of Irelands national land use plan (known as the National Planning Framework) is to accommodate a significant increase in population in Irish cities in more concentrated settlement patterns and at higher residential densities. This is to be achieved by requiring 50% of new residential developments to be located in infill and brownfield locations in cities such as Dublin. This paper explores the implications of this policy by examining existing housing and population density in Dublin using CSO data and mapping tools to measure densities throughout the City and County. A ranking of areas with the highest …

Measuring Teen Dating Violence Perpetration: A Comparison Of Cumulative And Single Assessment Procedures, Alison Krauss, Ernest N. Jouriles, David Rosenfield, Renee Mcdonald Dec 2018

Measuring Teen Dating Violence Perpetration: A Comparison Of Cumulative And Single Assessment Procedures, Alison Krauss, Ernest N. Jouriles, David Rosenfield, Renee Mcdonald

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Teen dating violence (TDV) is a widespread and harmful public health concern. The measurement of TDV has undergone some debate, with some researchers suggesting current measurement methods are suboptimal. The current study evaluates the use of cumulative assessments, a measurement method used previously in research on mental health and TDV victimization, to measure TDV perpetration. We hypothesized prevalence of frequency estimates of TDV perpetration would be higher when measured with cumulative assessments compared to a single report. Additionally, we hypothesized TDV perpetration measured cumulatively would more strongly relate to criterion variables than TDV perpetration measured with a single report. A …

Measuring Hpv Vaccine Worry: Development And Validation Of A Scale In Parents With Hpv Vaccine Eligible Children, Catherine Rochefort Dec 2018

Measuring Hpv Vaccine Worry: Development And Validation Of A Scale In Parents With Hpv Vaccine Eligible Children, Catherine Rochefort

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Worry is a negatively-valenced emotion associated with risk-related cognitions. In the context of HPV vaccination, it is likely that parents worry about giving their child the vaccine because some vaccine outcomes may be perceived as uncertain. Therefore, worry may be an important factor predicting HPV vaccination outcomes. This study’s purpose was to (1) develop a measure of HPV vaccine worry, (2) examine whether parents worry more about the HPV vaccine than other adolescent vaccines, and (3) determine whether HPV vaccine worry is associated with HPV vaccination intentions. In Study 1, a HPV vaccine worry item pool based on the three-process …

Establishment Of Turfgrass From Seed And Sod In Sand Based Systems Combining Sprinkler And Subsurface Drip Irrigation Systems, Roshaan Ahmed Khan Niazi Dec 2018

Establishment Of Turfgrass From Seed And Sod In Sand Based Systems Combining Sprinkler And Subsurface Drip Irrigation Systems, Roshaan Ahmed Khan Niazi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The establishment of turfgrass using subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) in sand based media has limited success. However, it is unknown if starting with overhead (sprinkler) irrigation and transitioning to SDI can enhance turfgrass establishment. Two experiments were conducted at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) to investigate the establishment of “L-93” creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) from seed and “TifEagle” ultra dwarf hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x Cynodon transvaalensis) from sod using sand based media. Each experiment consisted of two trials conducted in summer 2017 and spring 2018. Both creeping bentgrass trials and the spring ultra dwarf …

Art In The Stages Of Suffering And Death, Joanna Aramini Dec 2018

Art In The Stages Of Suffering And Death, Joanna Aramini

Visual Arts Department Student Scholarship

There has always been a strong link between art and the study of science and medicine, and one of the most iconic images of suffering and death in history to date is Christ suffering on the cross. In this thesis, I examine if and how art can make it possible to transcend human pain and overcome suffering, especially in our modern society where pain is seen as something we cannot deal with, and where we look to medicine and prescriptions to diminish it. I argue that art in the states of suffering and death, closely examining Michelangelo’s La Pieta and …

Fundraising Managers’ Perceptions Of Online Education’S Influence On Fundraising Practices And Giving, Peter J. Szucs Dec 2018

Fundraising Managers’ Perceptions Of Online Education’S Influence On Fundraising Practices And Giving, Peter J. Szucs

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The influence of online education on higher education fundraising practices and giving patterns is not well understood. This qualitative case study explored how fundraising managers perceived the impact of online education on higher education fundraising. To explore this phenomenon, the researcher interviewed fundraising managers at private, nonprofit colleges and universities in the western United States, and reviewed publicly available documents on the participant schools fundraising and financial information. The interviews demonstrated that study participants were concerned about connecting with graduates of online programs, and perceived that online students may have less affinity for their alma mater than on-ground alumni. The …

Community College Students’ Perceived Value Of High School Career And Technical Education Program Experiences, Martin Douglass Dec 2018

Community College Students’ Perceived Value Of High School Career And Technical Education Program Experiences, Martin Douglass

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The goal of this qualitative, narrative inquiry study was to explore the voices of community college students who have taken Career and Technical Education (CTE) while in high school, investigate if they perceived value from their high school CTE classes, and determine how those experiences impacted their high school and college educations (cf. Association for Career and Technical Education, 2016; American Institutes for Research, 2013; Southern Regional Education Board, 2008). The central research question for the dissertation was: What value do local community college students believe their high school Career and Technical Education program participation provided? The screening survey had …

Arts Integration In The Public Elementary School General Education Classroom, Norma Quinones

Theatre & Dance ETDs

ABSTRACT

In 2017, the U.S. Department of Education’s Nations Report Card disclosed performance trends among fourth and eighth grade students in New Mexico. Fourth graders were significantly below the national average in math and reading, while eighth graders were also performing below the national average (U.S. Department of Education). How can New Mexico public elementary school students fulfill their learning potential? Extensive research shows that arts integrated instruction is associated with student achievement. It outlines arts integration as a multidisciplinary form of teaching across the curriculum to transform teaching and learning at the elementary school level to change such statistics. …

Alterations In Resting State Functional Connectivity Associated With Alcohol Use Severity And Impulsivity In A Community Sample, Elena R. Stein Dec 2018

Alterations In Resting State Functional Connectivity Associated With Alcohol Use Severity And Impulsivity In A Community Sample, Elena R. Stein

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is characterized by neurocognitive and behavioral impairments including the multidimensional construct of impulsivity. Increased impulsivity is both a risk factor for, and a consequence of problematic alcohol use. Individuals with AUD exhibit alterations in neural circuitry when compared to those who do not have AUD. These circuit-level changes in AUD may underlie the difficulties that these individuals experience with heightened impulsivity. The present study uses data-driven resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) methodology to examine the differences in intrinsic functional networks between individuals with AUD and those who are social drinkers (SD). Participants in this secondary data …
