Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Purpose We assessed the discrimination of lean mass estimates that have been adjusted for adiposity for physical functioning deficits and prediction of incident disability. Methods Included were 2,846 participants from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study with available whole-body dual energy absorptiometry measures of appendicular lean mass index (ALMI, kg/m 2) and fat mass index (FMI, kg/m 2). Age-, sex-, and race-specific Z-Scores and T-Scores were determined by comparison to published reference ranges. ALMI values were adjusted for FMI (ALMI FMI) using a novel published method. Sex-stratified analyses assessed associations between lean mass estimates and the physical performance score, …

Is It Pain Or Too Much Pain Medication?, Leslie Bauerle

DNP and Student Works

Delirium is one of the most common undesirable consequences in older adult surgical patients. Studies have suggested that uncontrolled pain, in addition to overmedicating with opioids, may trigger an episode of delirium. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve the acute care orthopedic registered nurses' knowledge of delirium and its relationship to uncontrolled pain. It also aimed to evaluate if nurses consulted the pain nurse practitioner, for patients with risk factors for delirium experiencing uncontrolled pain.

Nurse Practitioner’S Perspectives On Treating Depression In The Nursing Home Setting, Bryan Mullaney

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Those living within the nursing home setting, or long-term care facilities, are at higher risk to succumb to the symptoms of depression due to illness, separation from family, and loss of autonomy. The available data has demonstrated that nurse practitioners are educated and trained to identify and treat depression. However, there is a lack of research that discusses the perspectives of nurse practitioners, such as how they utilize their clinical experience to tailor their treatment modalities on a case by case basis within the nursing home setting. They do this by using their specific assessment method to screen for depression, …

Biology Faculty Works

How reproductive strategies contribute to patterns of senescence in natural populations remains contentious. We studied reproductive senescence in the dimorphic white-throated sparrow, an excellent species for exploring this issue. Within both sexes the morphs use distinct reproductive strategies, and disassortative pairing by morph results in pair types with distinct parental systems. White morph birds are more colorful and aggressive than tan counterparts, and white males compete for extrapair matings, whereas tan males are more parental. Tan males and white females share parental care equally, whereas white males provide little parental support to tan females. We found morph-specific patterns of reproductive …

BACKGROUND: Geriatrics training is essential for future primary care providers. The Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model improves access to specialty care via case-based videoconferencing, but Project ECHO has not previously been designed to target residents.

OBJECTIVE: We designed Project ECHO-Geriatrics to deliver geriatrics education to primary care trainees using the ECHO model and evaluated self-rated geriatrics competency of trainees from the University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Network programs who participated between January 2016 and March 2017.

METHODS: We assessed outcomes of Project ECHO-Geriatrics through anonymous surveys. Participants rated didactics, case discussions, and geriatrics-specific knowledge before and after …

Perspectives On Aging Among Graduate Social Work Students: Using Photographs As An Online Pedagogical Activity, Jill M. Chonody Jun 2018

Perspectives On Aging Among Graduate Social Work Students: Using Photographs As An Online Pedagogical Activity, Jill M. Chonody

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The United States is experiencing an aging of the population, and by 2030, 20% of Americans will be 65 years or older (Federal Interagency Forum, 2010). However, for many helping professions, including social work, medicine, and nursing, student interest in gerontological practice is quite low. One international study found that only 5.4% of the more than 1,000 social work students who were surveyed indicated that working with older people was their primary area of interest (Chonody & Wang, 2014). Finding ways to improve student interest and break down biases against older adults is essential to improve student interest, and incorporating …

Background and Objectives: Obesity rates in adults ≥65 years have increased more than other age groups in the last decade, elevating risk for chronic disease and poor physical function, particularly in underserved racial and ethnic minorities. Effective, sustainable lifestyle interventions are needed to help community-based older adults prevent or delay mobility disability. Design, baseline recruitment, and implementation features of the Mobility and Vitality Lifestyle Program (MOVE UP) study are reported.

Research Design and Methods: MOVE UP aimed to recruit 26 intervention sites in underserved areas around Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and train a similar number of community health workers to deliver …

Filipino Service Care Providers' Experience Of Compassion Fatigue While Working In Residential Care Facilities, Leizel Cerezo-Pann

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore Filipino service care providers’ experience of compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is a common experience among health care professionals and can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and adverse behaviors in caring for patients. In California, there are a large number of Filipinos who are employed as care providers for older adults; however, there is limited research available regarding Filipino workers in the United States. This study took on a qualitative design that utilized face-to-face interviews to gain more insight into Filipino service care providers’ experience of compassion fatigue in relation to their employment. …

A Strategy For The Church Growth Through The Development Of Senior-Friendly Pastoral Ministries: The Case Of The Senior Ministry At Shinlim Central Church In Korea, Hoo Sik Kim Jun 2018

A Strategy For The Church Growth Through The Development Of Senior-Friendly Pastoral Ministries: The Case Of The Senior Ministry At Shinlim Central Church In Korea, Hoo Sik Kim

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study is to suggest the necessity of and alternative strategies for senior-friendly pastoral care to achieve sustained church growth amid the growing phenomenon of aging in Korean society. The recent aging of Korean society also has effects on changes in church members. As the ratio of senior members becomes increasingly high, pastoral alternative strategies for coping with it has also been urgently needed. The problem is that although this social phenomenon was already foreseen several years ago, there are insufficient practical strategies for pastoral care to deal with it.

The researcher first conducts biblical, theological, historical, …
