All Aboard? Seniors And Their Media, Adrian Smyth
All Aboard? Seniors And Their Media, Adrian Smyth
Irish Communication Review
It is a plain chronological fact that personal digital technologies – such as the mobile phone, computers and the internet and digital television services – have arrived late in the lives of many older people. The ‘problem’ here – if it is to be perceived as such – is that this late arrival may present some older people with a particular set of challenges which may not necessarily apply to other, younger, people; and while it is important to acknowledge older people must never be considered an homogenous cohort when it comes to experiences of ageing, considerations such as late-life …

Evaluating The Influence Of Time Of Day On Activity Engagement In Persons With Dementia, Darienne E. Boyden
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dementia is a serious disease affecting a growing number of people. With the onset of dementia comes a decline in social activity engagement which can negatively impact multiple aspects of a person’s life. Research suggests that time of day may influence activity engagement of a person with dementia, but such research is limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of time of day on engagement in activities in persons diagnosed with dementia. The secondary purpose of this study was to assess the validity of preference assessments in individuals diagnosed with dementia and determine if low preference …

Co-Creating Happy Moments: A Case Study Of Designing For People With Mental Health Challenges, Hong Li, Yiyun Zha, Jie Zhao
DRS Biennial Conference Series
We all have to consider the importance of mental health, which just as with physical health can cause us to feel ill, unwell and ostracized from our community. However, the stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental problems appears to form an impassive and invisible barrier between the people with mental health challenges and the public who is less willing to interact with them. As three researchers respectively from service design, visual communication and art education, we undertook collaborative interdisciplinary design as a strategy, in order to explore a participatory approach to engage with our participants, namely, an …

Evaluating Inclusivity Using Quantitative Personas, Joy Goodman-Deane, Sam Waller, Dana Demin, Arantxa González-De-Heredia, Mike Bradley, John P. Clarkson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Exclusion assessment is a powerful method for assessing inclusivity in a quantitative way. However, its focus on capability data makes it difficult to consider the effect of other factors such as different ways of using a product. We propose addressing this by combining exclusion assessment with quantitative personas. Each persona represents a group of people with similar capabilities, and is enhanced with other personal information. The capabilities of each persona are compared against the product demands to assess whether they (and thus the group they represent) could do a task. The additional persona information helps to determine how they approach …

Purpose: Although the importance of non-physical inclusivity has been recognised in inclusive design, the current understanding of psychosocial aspects in inclusive design is currently limited, disjointed and unstructured. This study reports a study of supermarket shopping experience of older individuals, designed and conducted to explore the concept of psychosocial aspects in older individuals’ supermarket shopping experience by identifying any possible psychosocial components. Empirical investigation i.e. non-participant observation was conducted with eight participants aged 60 and over. The results from the observational investigation were analysed and validated via multiple coding steps and multiple coders. Findings suggest four major dimensions including ‘cognitive’, …

In order to include persons with dementia in the MinD project actively, design probes were developed to provide insight into their perspectives. We applied probes due to their exploratory character and participation through self-documentation. The aim of this paper is to reflect on the design of the probes in relation to the outcomes as a source of inspiration for designers. More specifically, we investigate the openness and tangibility of the probes, and their content relating to the past, the current or the future. The five participants completed the probes to a large extent. The openness of assignments influenced their completion …

Why Giving Up The Keys Can Be Terrifying: Examining Driving Retirement Through A Terror Management Theory Paradigm, Perri Navarro
Why Giving Up The Keys Can Be Terrifying: Examining Driving Retirement Through A Terror Management Theory Paradigm, Perri Navarro
Dissertations
Driving retirement, or giving up the keys, is a current topic of interest in the gerontological literature. Most adults will outlive their ability to drive safely, yet do not plan for driving retirement, although planning for driving retirement appears to result in better outcomes. The current study examined the possibility that older adults avoid driving retirement because it is a mortality prime (reminder of death), as well as the possible role of implicit self-esteem in buffering against mortality concerns specifically in an older adult population. Participants in the current study (n=90) were randomly assigned into one of three …

Service Design And The Co-Production Of Public Policies: The Case Of Redactiva, Cristobal Tello, Carola Zurob, Sol Pacheco, Sebastián Negrete
ServDes Conference Series
The role of a citizen is not to be a beneficiary of a service delivered by a public agency, but a co-producer of the same service. Interaction between the public sector and citizens therefore needs to be carefully designed in order to accomplish a co-production of public policies. Service Design could contribute to a better design of this interaction and co-production between the two parties. A case study of the project RedActiva in Chile, focused on promoting and facilitating urban mobilization of the elderly, highlights some of the contributions that Service Design could provide to public policy design from a …
