The Conceptual Mapping Task (CMT) originated as a tool in qualitative counseling research. It has also been used in counseling supervision. In this session, the presenter will provide a real-life demonstration of the CMT with a supervisee, and then provide additional strategies utilizing the CMT as a counseling intervention.

The opioid epidemic has been declared a national emergency that resulted in nearly 50,000 opioid overdose deaths last year alone. Counselors can and should be meaningfully involved in response. This session will present current information about the opioid crisis and the addictive process generally, and then specifically focus on opioid addiction, treatment and recovery. The session will explore how counselors can effectively respond to clients who use opioids, including for pain management, and how education, prevention, and treatment are important ways counselors can respond to the opioid crisis.

Background

Claudication is the most common manifestation of peripheral artery disease (PAD), producing significant ambulatory compromise. Limited information exists on the routine physical activity of claudicating patients. Our objective was to record the intensity/time profiles of physical activity and the timing and duration of sedentary behavior of a sample of community-dwelling claudicating patients.

Methods

Forty-four claudicating patients referred to our vascular clinic were recruited. Physical activity was recorded using the ActiGraph GT1M activity monitor. Background:This project aimed to evaluate a weekly group medical visit provided at a federally qualified health center, called Healthy Lifestyles + Open Source Wellness. The weekly group provides guided movement, mindful meditation, nutritious snacks, health education, group health coaching, and clinical monitoring for low-income patients with chronic conditions. The group aims to promote positive lifestyle changes to manage and treat various chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain and obesity.

Background. A growing body of research suggests female informal caregivers fair worse physically, socially and emotionally than males. As the prevalence of male caregivers is increasing there is a critical need to understand why some caregivers fair worse than others.

Aim. The purpose of this study is to determine what gender and relational differences exist among service-seeking informal caregivers.

Methods. This is a retrospective, cross sectional study of 467 caregivers utilizing the Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA) or the University of Southern California Family Caregiver Support Center (USC FCSC) services between January 2017 and March 2018.

Cannabis is an effective treatment for pain following spinal cord injury that should be available to patients and researchers. The major argument against the rescheduling of cannabis is that the published research is not convincing. This argument is disingenuous at best, given that the evidence has been presented and rejected at many points during the political dialog. Moreover, the original decision to criminalize cannabis did not utilize scientific or medical data. Problem: Providing a quiet environment is essential in patient’s healing and recovery. Last year, the October 15 through May 17 survey period resulted at a 2 Star Rating for the hospital, which is below the top 25th percentile. This result along with the patient population, telemetry designation, and unit size prompted the selection of the inpatient telemetry unit in Northern California for the change strategy plan.
