Exploring The Cultural Intelligence Of Nurse Leaders, Valerie D. Campbell Jan 2018

Exploring The Cultural Intelligence Of Nurse Leaders, Valerie D. Campbell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Today, nurses represent many cultures and ethnic backgrounds. In their leadership style, nurse leaders must learn to embrace cultural intelligence or cultural quotient (CQ), that is, an extension of emotional intelligence that affords them the ability to manage a culturally diverse workforce. Historically, CQ has been relevant to business, locally and globally. But it is also important to explore the CQ of nurse leaders. Scholarly studies show that leaders with CQ are responsible for developing innovative employee behaviors, forward-thinking ideas, and creativeness in the workplace. CQ has a theoretical foundation in the 2003 research of Early and Ang who focused …

The Effect Of Cultural Awareness Training On Staff In Intergovernmental Service Agreement Facilities, Steven Alan Coffman Jan 2018

The Effect Of Cultural Awareness Training On Staff In Intergovernmental Service Agreement Facilities, Steven Alan Coffman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

No system-wide diversity training exists at Immigration and Customs Enforcement Intergovernmental Service Agreement (IGSA) facilities. This study was conducted to determine if diversity training has a short-term effect on cultural awareness of staff in these facilities in the midwestern United States. This information is important to administrations in IGSA facilities when deciding to include diversity training in the annual required training of staff, as the efficacy and relevance have been unknowns. The theoretical foundation of this study is Smircich's organizational culture theory. A nonequivalent control group research design was utilized to collect survey data from 48 participants at 2 midwestern …

Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment Completion And Predictors Of Noncompletion Among Visa Holders In The Rural Setting, Scott Hutton Jan 2018

Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment Completion And Predictors Of Noncompletion Among Visa Holders In The Rural Setting, Scott Hutton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), a product of exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), can lead to tuberculosis (TB) and further cause death if untreated. Fortunately, TB can be prevented with LTBI treatment. Targeting newly arrived visa holders for LTBI screening and treatment is an effective strategy for decreasing future TB burden. However, LTBI treatment completion rates are low, and researches had primarily focused on the nonrural U.S. setting. This study, using a retrospective cohort design under the epidemiological disease triangle framework evaluated (a) the treatment completion rates for 2 cohorts of visa holders (i.e., immigrants, N = 31 and refugees, N …

Parents Perceptions Of Social Inclusion Of Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Jacqueline Green Jan 2018

Parents Perceptions Of Social Inclusion Of Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Jacqueline Green

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Researchers have shown that the voices of parents of adults with intellectual disabilities can help build supports in the community. Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

With the introduction of herbicide resistant Palmer amaranth into Kentucky during the past 10 years there has been an increasing concern for effective control measures in grain production. Field trials were performed in 2016 and 2017 near Barlow and Paris, KY to determine efficacy of chemical control programs targeting herbicide resistant Palmer amaranth. Percent visual control, effects on plant density and plant height were measured in 2016 to determine treatment effectiveness. Treatments containing four different sites of herbicide activity achieved an average of 98% control. Treatments containing only 3, 2 or 1 site of activity only achieved 64%, 45% and …

Exploring Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Soil And Crop Processes For Irrigation Management, Javier Reyes Jan 2018

Exploring Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Soil And Crop Processes For Irrigation Management, Javier Reyes

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Irrigation needs to be applied to soils in relatively humid regions such as western Kentucky to supply water for crop uptake to optimize and stabilize yields. Characterization of soil and crop variability at the field scale is needed to apply site specific management and to optimize water application. The objective of this work is to propose a characterization and modeling of soil and crop processes to improve irrigation management. Through an analysis of spatial and temporal behavior of soil and crop variables the variability in the field was identified. Integrative analysis of soil, crop, proximal and remote sensing data was …

Restructuring The Elementary And Secondary Education Act’S Approach To Equity, Kimberly Jenkins Robinson Jan 2018

Restructuring The Elementary And Secondary Education Act’S Approach To Equity, Kimberly Jenkins Robinson

Law Faculty Publications

The United States stands at a crossroads regarding educational equity. On one road, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the current reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), greatly reduced federal involvement in education and returned control to state and local governments that had repeatedly criticized the prescriptive nature of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In the wake of this federal retreat, state and local control of education without effective federal oversight creates grave concerns for those who advocate for economically disadvantaged and minority students, including many civil rights groups. History confirms that states and …

The (Un)Changing Derivative Suit, Jessica M. Erickson Jan 2018

The (Un)Changing Derivative Suit, Jessica M. Erickson

Law Faculty Publications

The past 25 years brought great upheaval in shareholder litigation. The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 (“PSLRA”) upended securities class actions. As a result of this legislation, institutional investors now play a far more prominent role in these cases (Choi, et al. 2005), but also face procedural hurdles nearly unprecedented in our legal system (Erickson 2016). More recently, the number of merger class actions skyrocketed, as shareholders began to challenge nearly every significant merger or acquisition, often in multiple jurisdictions across the country (Sinha 2016). To curb these suits, courts announced increased scrutiny of settlements and invited companies …

Regulatory Change And Corporate Acquisitions, Arya Rishi Jan 2018

Regulatory Change And Corporate Acquisitions, Arya Rishi

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis investigates the impact on foreign investment activities of the equity market liberalization introduced in response to the 1997 crisis, which primarily involves the relaxation of the foreign ownership restrictions as well as improvements in corporate governance practices. These regulatory changes, which occurred in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, should have resulted in a lower amount of frictions in the capital market. With this lowering of frictions, we should observe higher gains from cross-border corporate acquisitions in addition to a higher volume of cross-border acquisitions. When I use combined announcement excess returns to measure acquisition gains, I find …

Cross-Scale Correlation Between In Situ Measurements Of Canopy Gap Fraction And Landsat-Derived Vegetation Indices With Implications For Monitoring The Seasonal Phenology In Tropical Forests Using Modis Data, Nicholas Cuba, John Rogan, Deborah Lawrence, Christopher A. Williams Jan 2018

Williams

Geography

Deciduousness in dry tropical forests results in substantial seasonal changes to canopy gap fractions. The characterization of such structural properties over large areas is necessary for understanding energy and nutrient distribution within forest ecosystems. However, a spatial extrapolation of measurements from relatively few, spatially-concentrated field observations can yield estimated values that have questionable accuracy and precision at regional scales. This paper uses linear regression models to compare measurements of canopy gap fraction from in situ digital cover photography in the dry tropical forest of the Southern Yucatán, Mexico, to measurements of seasonal vegetation change based on three vegetation indices-the Normalized …

Upside-Down Fluxes Down Under: Co2 Net Sink In Winter And Net Source In Summer In A Temperate Evergreen Broadleaf Forest, Alexandre A. Renchon, Anne Griebel, Daniel Metzen, Christopher A. Williams, Belinda Medlyn, Remko A. Duursma, Craig V.M. Barton, Chelsea Maier, Matthias M. Boer, Peter Isaac, David Tissue, Victor Resco De Dios, Elise Pendall

Geography

Predicting the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon fluxes is challenging in broadleaved evergreen forests because of their moderate climates and subtle changes in canopy phenology. We assessed the climatic and biotic drivers of the seasonality of net ecosystem-atmosphere CO2 exchange (NEE) of a eucalyptus-dominated forest near Sydney, Australia, using the eddy covariance method. The climate is characterised by a mean annual precipitation of 800mm and a mean annual temperature of 18°C, hot summers and mild winters, with highly variable precipitation. In the 4-year study, the ecosystem was a sink each year (-225gCm-2yr-1 on average, with a standard deviation of 108gCm-2yr-1); …

Evaluating Wildlife Vulnerability To Mercury Pollution From Artisanal And Small-Scale Gold Mining In Madre De Dios, Peru, K. E. Markham, Florencia Sangermano Jan 2018

Evaluating Wildlife Vulnerability To Mercury Pollution From Artisanal And Small-Scale Gold Mining In Madre De Dios, Peru, K. E. Markham, Florencia Sangermano

Geography

Illegal, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) often occurs in remote highly biodiverse areas, such as the Madre de Dios region of Peru. Mercury used in gold mining bioaccumulates in the environment and poses developmental, hormonal, and neurological threats to wildlife. The impact of ASGM on biodiversity remains largely unknown. We used geographic information science to create a spatial model of pollution risk from mining sites, in order to predict locations and species assemblages at risk. Multicriteria evaluation was used to determine how flow accumulation, distance from mining areas, total suspended sediment load, and soil porosity influenced the vulnerability of …

Assessing The Interaction Between Mountain Forests And Snow Avalanches At Nevados De Chillán, Chile And Its Implications For Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction, Alejandro Casteller, Thomas Häfelfinger, Erika Cortés Donoso, Karen Podvin, Dominik Kulakowski, Peter Bebi Jan 2018

Assessing The Interaction Between Mountain Forests And Snow Avalanches At Nevados De Chillán, Chile And Its Implications For Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction, Alejandro Casteller, Thomas Häfelfinger, Erika Cortés Donoso, Karen Podvin, Dominik Kulakowski, Peter Bebi

Geography

Gravitational natural hazards such as snow avalanches, rockfalls, shallow landslides and volcanic activity represent a risk to mountain communities around the world. In particular, where documentary records about these processes are rare, decisions on risk management and land-use planning have to be based on a variety of other sources including vegetation, tree-ring data and natural hazard process models. We used a combination of these methods in order to evaluate dynamics of natural hazards with a focus on snow avalanches at Valle Las Trancas, in the Biobío region in Chile. Along this valley, natural hazards threaten not only the local human …

(Un)Frozen Spaces: Exploring The Role Of Sea Ice In The Marine Socio-Legal Spaces Of The Bering And Beaufort Seas, Kristen L. Shake, Karen E. Frey, Deborah G. Martin, Philip E. Steinberg

Geography

Sea ice is a dynamic physical element of the greater Arctic marine system, one that has myriad connections to human systems on a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Changes to the spatial extent of sea ice simultaneously permits and endangers maritime operations, as well as impacts current debates over maritime boundaries, presenting an interesting challenge for international law. Sea ice is not a stationary object; it moves through time and space in response to the physical forces of wind, ocean currents, and heating. It has a tangible, material and substantive role in contestations over territory, resources and marine boundaries …

The Geographic Mosaic Of Wolbachia Infection In Melanitis Leda Butterfly Populations, Brandon E. Latorre Jan 2018

The Geographic Mosaic Of Wolbachia Infection In Melanitis Leda Butterfly Populations, Brandon E. Latorre

Dissertations and Theses

Insects are the most species-rich multicellular taxon on the planet, and it is estimated that more than half of all insect species are infected with the endosymbiont Wolbachia. This bacterium can manipulate the reproduction of its host and potentially affect host evolution. Most surveys investigating patterns of Wolbachia infection in nature sample limited numbers of individuals; population-level investigations into geographic differences in infection status that might affect host evolution are few. To investigate geographic variability among populations of a single species, we assayed 133 Melanitis leda butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) for Wolbachia infection collected throughout its range in the …

Crime On The High Seas: What Conditions Are Necessary To Achieve Effective Maritime Governance Regime?, Michael A. Celic Jan 2018

Crime On The High Seas: What Conditions Are Necessary To Achieve Effective Maritime Governance Regime?, Michael A. Celic

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores why international maritime governance regimes have inconsistent rates of success. The global community relies on the world’s oceans for food, trade, and resources. Therefore, the regulation of these oceans is necessary to provide adequate passage through its waters and the management of all the resources they supply for the mutual benefit of all. Although there are international laws such as the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS), many of these laws fail to address current global threats and have proven inadequate in forming proactive collective responses. It is particularly problematic addressing transnational criminal …

Guyana-Venezuela Border Dispute: Seeking A Peaceful Solution, Aaron Marcus Homer Jan 2018

Guyana-Venezuela Border Dispute: Seeking A Peaceful Solution, Aaron Marcus Homer

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine and evaluate the effectiveness of those dispute settlement mechanisms that are capable of resolving the Guyana-Venezuela border dispute. This thesis will analyze those legal principles and/or techniques of the International Court of Justice, mediation and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which are indispensable for dispute resolution. I argue that a resolution is significant for the stability of the international community.

Guyana and Venezuela possess economic and political interests in the disputed Essequibo region. Venezuela’s predilection for bilateral negotiations contradicts Guyana’s request for a judicial solution. These extreme positions are not novel but …
