God And Mr. Lincoln, Allen C. Guelzo Apr 2018

God And Mr. Lincoln, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

On the day in April 1837 that Abraham Lincoln rode into Springfield, Illinois, to set himself up professionally as a lawyer, the American republic was awash in religion. Lincoln, however, was neither swimming nor even bobbing in its current. “This thing of living in Springfield is rather a dull business after all, at least it is so to me,” the uprooted state legislator and commercially bankrupt Lincoln wrote to Mary Owens on May 7th. “I am quite as lonesome here as [I] ever was anywhere in my life,” and in particular, “I’ve never been to church yet, nor probably shall …

Food Localization: Empowering Community Food Systems Through The Farm Bill, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Brian Fink, Alexandra Schluntz

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Our intent in this Article is not to delineate foods that are local or not local, nor is it to lionize one agricultural production method over another. Rather, we hope to build on the literature that for many decades has documented how local communities have emerged as influential actors on the American food system through establishing control over local supply chains often alongside national and global supply chains. We begin with Part I, which explores how some food-system scholars have conceptualized these democratic changes occurring. We look to Thomas Lyson’s concept of civic agriculture, which attempts to move corporation-oriented communities …

Executive Summary_Financing Climate Resilience: Mobilizing Resources And Incentives To Protect Boston From Climate Risks, David L. Levy, Rebecca Herst

Sustainable Solutions Lab

This report explores the challenges of financing climate-resilience investments in the Boston region. As risks from storm surge, sea level rise, and extreme weather increase, there is growing urgency for pre-disaster investments to reduce physical risk, reduce social vulnerability, and increase capacity for emergency response and disaster recovery. However, these investments face significant barriers, including market failures, capital budget constraints, and misaligned incentives. The report identifies a range of funding mechanisms appropriate at different scales, including general obligation bonds, resilience fees, property tax surcharges, stormwater fees, tax increment financing, business improvement districts, and insurance-based funding. It evaluates these mechanisms using …

Sit Graduate Institute: Moving Sit Towards A Model Of Inclusive Excellence In Diversity, Steffen Glenn Gillom

Capstone Collection

The Inclusive Excellence Model has been used by college diversity offices all across the United States to help streamline diversity policy and foster a more inclusive collegial environment for students, staff, and faculty. It is now time for SIT Graduate Institute to benefit from this model. SIT has a long and rich history of diversity and inclusion work. However, much of that history has been lost or stored away in long-forgotten archives. Also, much of this memory has never been analyzed in a way that increases institutional wisdom. This study takes on the challenge of analyzing SIT’s institutional memory on …

The Earth Sciences Field Camp: A Short-Term Study Abroad Program Design, Catherine Tartaglia Apr 2018

The Earth Sciences Field Camp: A Short-Term Study Abroad Program Design, Catherine Tartaglia

Capstone Collection

For earth science students, a field camp is the culmination of years of dedicated study: an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they have gleaned in the classroom, to develop personally and professionally, and to travel with intention. Although short-term, these programs are nevertheless impactful and academically demanding. They require students to synthesize and employ the entirety of their scientific knowledge as well as collaborate with a team to achieve their learning goals.

Their experiential nature makes field camps the perfect opportunity for earth sciences students - who may, due to the nature of their curricula, be excluded from an …

Ecuador As An Academic Destination: Building A National Strategy, Silvia Donoso

Capstone Collection

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this capstone paper is to identify key stakeholders that can contribute to the design of a national strategy to increase academic mobility to Ecuador and, at the same time, support Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in their efforts to internationalize their campuses. The methodology to be used is a stakeholder analysis with a trans-disciplinary approach, which will identify key players from different institutions and disciplinary backgrounds. This International Education Policy Advocacy course-linked capstone proposes the establishment of a national council constituted of key stakeholders to work on a strategy, which should be closely connected with other national …

Climate Change Impacts On Hydrological Processes In Silver Bow Creek Watershed, William Howard George Apr 2018

Climate Change Impacts On Hydrological Processes In Silver Bow Creek Watershed, William Howard George

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Climate change is expected to alter temperature and precipitation regimes across the globe and have varying effects on localized hydrological processes. For Silver Bow Creek (SBC), a headwater to the Clark Fork River in western Montana, the magnitude, duration, and frequency of spring runoff and summer base flow are dependent on the processes of snow accumulation and melt. Headwater hydrology and mountain streams will likely experience earlier snowmelt, increased spring flows, and decreased summer flows due to climate change.

A process-based hydrological model the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to evaluate the effects of climate change on …

Combating Corruption With African Restorative Justice Tradition: Suggested Steps For Nigeria, Peter Genger Apr 2018

Combating Corruption With African Restorative Justice Tradition: Suggested Steps For Nigeria, Peter Genger

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Corruption has continued to plague countries across the world, especially those in Africa. Local and international communities have all congregated around the conviction that Western bureaucratic mechanisms can destroy and deter corruption. The heavy criticisms against them indicates failure coming from inherent contradictions and lack of political and moral will to keep corruption practices and actors at bay. African restorative justice is articulated as a viable mechanism for controlling corruption and should not be taken as a second fiddle to Western mechanisms, but suis generis a strategy with great potentials. By using African restorative justice mechanism, Nigeria will not only …

Assessing Transboundary Wildfire Exposure In The Southwestern United States, Alan A. Ager, Palaiologos Palaiologou, Cody Evers, Michelle A. Day, Ana M.G. Barros

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

We assessed transboundary wildfire exposure among federal, state, and private lands and 447 communities in the state of Arizona, southwestern United States. The study quantified the relative magnitude of transboundary (incoming, outgoing) versus nontransboundary (i.e., self-burning) wildfire exposure based on land tenure or community of the simulated ignition and the resulting fire perimeter. We developed and described several new metrics to quantify and map transboundary exposure. We found that incoming transboundary fire accounted for 37% of the total area burned on large parcels of federal and state lands, whereas 63% of the area burned was burned by ignitions within the …

Educator Perceptions Of Gifted English Language Learners, Michelle C. Lynch Apr 2018

Educator Perceptions Of Gifted English Language Learners, Michelle C. Lynch

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This paper explores educator perceptions of gifted and talented (GT) English language (ELL) students. This study identifies barriers for identification and service for GT/ELL students and highlights ways to support students through current efforts for students who fit these criteria. Educators from two elementary schools were interviewed in this qualitative study. The schools were chosen due to their high population of ELL students. The roles of professional development (PD) and best practices for identification of underrepresented students are discussed. Five main themes emerged from interviews of educators that work with GT/ELL students. The themes are obstacles, perception, referral, professional development, …

Essential Ocean Variables For Global Sustained Observations Of Biodiversity And Ecosystem Changes, Frank E. Muller-Karger Apr 2018

Essential Ocean Variables For Global Sustained Observations Of Biodiversity And Ecosystem Changes, Frank E. Muller-Karger

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Sustained observations of marine biodiversity and ecosystems focused on specific conservation and management problems are needed around the world to effectively mitigate or manage changes resulting from anthropogenic pressures. These observations, while complex and expensive, are required by the international scientific, governance and policy communities to provide baselines against which the effects of human pressures and climate change may be measured and reported, and resources allocated to implement solutions. To identify biological and ecological essential ocean variables (EOVs) for implementation within a global ocean observing system that is relevant for science, informs society, and technologically feasible, we used a driver-pressure-state-impact-response …

Analysis Of Nox Levels In Ambient Air Using Passive Sampling, Cole Crosby Apr 2018

Analysis Of Nox Levels In Ambient Air Using Passive Sampling, Cole Crosby

CUP Undergraduate Research

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are gas phase precursors that can lead to excess tropospheric ozone (O3). These pollutants are detrimental to human health at concentrations in ambient air. Measurement of these pollutants is generally performed by active sampling. However, this leaves for costly procedures and sparse monitoring networks. Passive sampling is a cost-efficient technique that allows for greater dispersion of sampling networks. In this study, a passive sampling technique developed by Ogawa & CO., USA, Inc. is utilized to study levels of NOx on the Concordia University campus in an undergraduate laboratory setting. The same technique is also employed in a …

Perception Of One’S Circumstances As It Relates To Satisfaction With One’S Life, Gerhett Moser Apr 2018

Perception Of One’S Circumstances As It Relates To Satisfaction With One’S Life, Gerhett Moser

CUP Undergraduate Research

I explored the relationship between how one perceives the circumstances of their life and how satisfied one is with the life they are living. Researchers have suggested that there is a strong desire for people to be happy (Broyles & King, 1997; Deiner, Shao, Smith, & Suh, 1995; King & Napa, 1998), and that being happy can positively influence various areas of one’s life (Deiner, King, & Lyubomirsky, 2005; Watkins, 2016). Furthermore, circumstances such as gender (Deiner & Pavot, 2013), age (Watkins, 2016), income (Deiner & Biswas-Deiner, 2002), intelligence (Choi & Veenhoven, 2012), and geography (Schkade & Kahneman, 1998) have …
