Joint-Admissions Explored: Determining The Existence Of A Transfer-Affirming Culture Between Owensboro Community And Technical College And Western Kentucky University-Owensboro, Angela Loretta Higdon

Dissertations

A growing number of postsecondary students transfer from a two-year to a four-year institution. The joint admissions program between Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC) and Western Kentucky University-Owensboro (WKU-O) is a unique example of such a transfer relationship. Research is needed to understand the nature of the joint admissions relationship. The purpose of this case study was to explore the joint admissions relationship between OCTC and WKU-O, in order to determine the existence of a transfer-affirming culture, in accordance with Handel’s (2011) transfer-affirming conceptual framework.

The case study was bounded by time, including the previous three academic years (2014-2015, …

Informed by the Macro-Micro approach (Steiber, & Haas, 20122 ), the paper aims to examine the major determinants of youth (Un)employment in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from a gender perspective. The study primarily uses quantitative data from the 2014 urban unemployment and employment survey conducted by the Ethiopian Central Statistical Authority. The study employs descriptive statistics and Multinomial logit model to analyse the quantitative data. Qualitative data generated using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with selected youth in the City were also used to substantiate the quantitative results. Findings of the study reveal that different levels of factors- structural factors, …

Development Of Stable Cell Lines For The Production Of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Targeted Exosomes, Anja Beard, Zach Ehlinger Apr 2018

Development Of Stable Cell Lines For The Production Of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Targeted Exosomes, Anja Beard, Zach Ehlinger

Bioengineering Senior Theses

Exosomes represent a promising new approach to targeted drug delivery. Current research explores the ability of these naturally occurring nanoparticles to transport therapeutic cargo to specific tissues of the body and to subsequently enter the cells of those tissues. Human cells act as an efficient source of these nano-vesicles. Our project ultimately focuses on the establishment of a cell line that produces exosomes tagged with the RD114 protein, which allows for the targeting of hematopoietic stem cells. With the ability to deliver therapeutic cargo to these specific cells, exosomes can serve as a vehicle for many effective hematopoietic stem cell …

What Determines Americans’ Income: An Intersectional Multivariate Analysis Of Americans’ Income, Sandra Hovsepian Apr 2018

What Determines Americans’ Income: An Intersectional Multivariate Analysis Of Americans’ Income, Sandra Hovsepian

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

In a capitalistic society, Americans are socialized to value the earning of money more than anything. Americans are told that the best way to make this money is to go to college and further their education. Yet, millionaires such as Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey never bothered to earn a college degree. This begs one to question if education is the only factor in earning a sizable income. If not the only factor, is it the most important?

When addressing the question of if education is the only factor, the wage gap supplies a partial answer. We know that because …

Nature As The Teacher: Exploring The Development And Growth Of Nature Schools In The U.S., Emily Gehrdes Apr 2018

Nature As The Teacher: Exploring The Development And Growth Of Nature Schools In The U.S., Emily Gehrdes

Community Engagement Student Work

Nature Schools are places in which achievement, curiosity, development, and inspiration transpire in natural environments. In the early 60’s, Nature Schools began to appear around the country. Since then, many such schools have appeared; today there are over two hundred nature schools throughout the US. Yet although a substantial amount of research has been done on nature schools, there exists no baseline or census exploring these programs’ strengths and weaknesses. This capstone research project investigated these schools’ policies, procedures, and curriculum through a multi-phase mixed-methods research design. Specifically, a national survey was distributed to the directors of approximately 140 U.S. …

Isolated By Caste: Neighbourhood-Scale Residential Segregation In Indian Metros, Naveen Bharathi, Deepak Malghan, Andaleeb Rahman Apr 2018

Isolated By Caste: Neighbourhood-Scale Residential Segregation In Indian Metros, Naveen Bharathi, Deepak Malghan, Andaleeb Rahman

Working Papers

We present the first ever neighbourhood-scale portrait of caste-based residential segregation in Indian cities. Residential segregation studies in Indian cities have relied on ward-level data. We demonstrate in this paper that wards cannot approximate an urban neighborhood, and that they are heterogeneous. For a typical ward, the neighbourhood-ward dissimilarity index is greater than the wardcity dissimilarity index. Using 2011 enumeration block (EB) level census data for five major cities in India – Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai – we show how patterns of caste-based urban residential segregation operate in contemporary India. We also present the first visual snapshot of …

Working Papers

This article examines the public and private partnerships (PPPs) in investments in infrastructure of provision of public goods in India beset with institutional failures at several fronts. It draws insights from institutional (transaction costs) and information economics. The objective is to examine under what conditions PPPs succeed or fail. This article attempts to introduce (PPP) as a new form of governance structure that is efficient from the other structures in terms of contractual norms, transaction costs of uncertainty and asset specificity and information asymmetry through proper monitoring and incentive mechanism. Furthermore, we bring forth a few technological issues in applying …

More Heat Than Light: Census-Scale Evidence For The Relationship Between Ethnic Diversity And Economic Development As A Statistical Artifact, Naveen Bharathi, Deepak Malghan, Andaleeb Rahman Apr 2018

More Heat Than Light: Census-Scale Evidence For The Relationship Between Ethnic Diversity And Economic Development As A Statistical Artifact, Naveen Bharathi, Deepak Malghan, Andaleeb Rahman

Working Papers

negative and positive { has been empirically tested for a limited set of diversity variables despite its centrality to the political economy discourse. Using a unique census-scale micro dataset from rural India containing detailed caste, religion, language, and landholding data (n 13:25 million households) in combi- nation with administrative data on human development, satellite measurements of luminosity as proxy for sub-national economic development, we show that an association between social hetero- geneity and economic development is tenuous at best, and is likely an artifact of geographic, political, and ethnic units of analysis. We develop a cogent framework to jointly account …

Heirs To The Frontier: James Fenimore Cooper’S Influence On Tolstoy, Christian Gum Apr 2018

Heirs To The Frontier: James Fenimore Cooper’S Influence On Tolstoy, Christian Gum

Inquiry Journal 2018

In the early nineteenth century, American author James Fenimore Cooper wrote a series of frontier novels called The Leatherstocking Tales (1823-1841), the most famous of which was The Last of the Mohicans (1826). Forty years after Cooper published his earliest work, a young Leo Tolstoy marched south into the Caucasus after enlisting in the Russian Imperial Army. Tolstoy, best known as the author of War and Peace (1865) and Anna Karenina (1873), began his literary career by writing about his experiences in the Caucasus, the frontier of the Russian Empire. With the knowledge that Tolstoy read Cooper’s work, I used …

Specifically, this exploratory study was designed to demonstrate the applicability of interactive web geographic information systems (GIS) applications as …

Nursing Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Trans* And Gender-Nonconforming Patients, Christine Humphrey Apr 2018

Nursing Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Trans* And Gender-Nonconforming Patients, Christine Humphrey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

This project aims to impact nursing knowledge and attitudes toward trans* and gender-nonconforming patients. The term transgender, synonymous with the term trans*, is utilized by individuals whose gender and designated sex at birth differ from one another, compared to cisgender persons whose gender and assigned sex are aligned (Erickson-Schroth, 2014).

The trans* population remains underserved. Nurses conscious and unconscious biases impede the advancement of knowledge and attitudes needed to promote best outcomes for trans* patients. Trans* patients have many of the same healthcare concerns as cisgender individuals. However, unique needs for this population arise from compounded issues of prejudice and …

Quantifying Partisan Gerrymandering: An Evaluation Of The Efficiency Gap Proposal, Benjamin Plener Cover Apr 2018

Quantifying Partisan Gerrymandering: An Evaluation Of The Efficiency Gap Proposal, Benjamin Plener Cover

Articles

Electoral districting presents a risk of partisan gerrymandering: the manipulation of electoral boundaries to favor one political party over another. For three decades, the U.S. Supreme Court has failed to settle on a legal test for partisan gerrymandering, and such claims have uniformly failed. Until recently. Plaintiffs prevailed before a three-judge federal panel in Wisconsin by leveraging a new measure called the "efficiency gap," which quantifies partisan gerrymandering in terms of two parties' relative efficiency at translating votes for their party into seats in government. The case is now before the Court, which may embrace the efficiency gap approach and …

The Extreme Karstification Of The Kinta Valley, West Malaysia, Ros Fatihah Muhammad Apr 2018

The Extreme Karstification Of The Kinta Valley, West Malaysia, Ros Fatihah Muhammad

Sinkhole Conference 2018

Surface limestone makes up only about 7% of the whole karst area; the greater subsurface area lies beneath thick alluvial sediments. The depth of the subsurface varies from 9 m to more than 60 m, and shows various topographies from platforms with flat concordant tops to jagged sharp pinnacles with rounded tops. The ratio of surface to subsurface karst can be used as an indication of the intensity of dissolution that occurs and of advanced degradation. Based on its association with tin-rich alluvium, it is believed that the karst in this area developed mostly under a pluvial environment and the …

Laboratory Testing Of The Potential For The Influence Of Suspended Sediments On The Electrochemical Remediation Of Karst Groundwater, Kimberly Hetrick, Ljiljana Rajic, Akram Alshawabkeh, Dorothy Vesper, Mohammad Shokri Apr 2018

Laboratory Testing Of The Potential For The Influence Of Suspended Sediments On The Electrochemical Remediation Of Karst Groundwater, Kimberly Hetrick, Ljiljana Rajic, Akram Alshawabkeh, Dorothy Vesper, Mohammad Shokri

Sinkhole Conference 2018

Due to the complicated nature of karst aquifers, many groundwater treatment technologies are difficult to implement successfully. A particular challenge arises because sediments are ubiquitous and mobile in karst systems and may either facilitate contaminant transport or act as long-term substrates for storage via sorption. However, electrochemical remediation is a promising technology to be optimized for karst aquifers due to easy manipulation and control of groundwater chemistry, low cost, ability for in situ application, and performance under alternative power sources. This study investigates the effects of suspended karst sediments on the groundwater electrochemical remediation via electro-Fention (EF) mechanism. The EF …

Families And The Ethic Of Globordered Markets, Daphna Hacker Apr 2018

Families And The Ethic Of Globordered Markets, Daphna Hacker

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

In this Article, I examine the ethical implications of the impact of what I term globordered markets-that is, the markets created by the intense interactions between national borders and globalization-on families. While the interrelations between "the family" and "the market" have been acknowledged ever since Engels pointed to the connection between private property and the patriarchal family, and more recently in the rich discussions over work-family balance, there remains much more to be explored in this moral domain. In particular, very little scholarly attention has been given to how families are affected by both the global market and the impact …

Bulk Chemistry Of Karst Sediment Deposits, Mohammad Shokri, Dorothy Vesper, Ellen Herman, Ljiljana Rajic, Kimerly Hetrick, Ingrid Y. Padilla, Akram Alshawabkeh

Sinkhole Conference 2018

Sediments are ubiquitous in karst systems and play a critical role in the fate and transport of contaminants. Sorbed contaminants may be stored on immobile sediments or rapidly dispersed on mobile sediments. Sediments may also influence remediation by either enhancing or interfering with the process. To better understand the potential effects of sediments on remediation, we conducted physical and chemical characterizations of 11 sediment samples from 7 cave and spring deposits from karst regions of Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The samples were analyzed for particle-size distribution using sieves and laser diffraction particle analysis. The sediment size fraction <2 mm>(sand, silt, …

The Water Chemical Characteristics Of Qinglongdong Karst Spring, Kunming, China, Binggui Cai, Hong Liu

Sinkhole Conference 2018

Karst water plays a very important role in providing a municipal water supply in Kunming City, Yunnan Proving, China. It contributes approximately 50% of the drinking water for the city. Given the rapidly growth in urbanization and of the economy of Kunming City in the last decades, most karst springs have been suffering from human impact, in both quality and quantity. Qinglongdong Spring (QLDS) is located in Dabanqiao village, Northwestern Kunming, 23 km away from Kunming downtown and is an important component of the water supply system of Kunming City. It was previously abandoned in 2003 and 2004 due to …

Mapping Of Potential Show Caves In The Racha Limestone Massif (Country Of Georgia), Lasha Asanidze, Zaza Lezhava, Nino Chikhradze, George Gaprindashvili, Guranda Avkopashvili

Sinkhole Conference 2018

Abstract: The Racha limestone massif is located in the eastern part of the karst zone of western Georgia. The massif is a typical example of Georgian mountain karst regions, where diverse surface and subsurface karst landforms are found. The main aim of this research is to present mapping of two potential show caves, and document speleological information from the Racha limestone massif. The morphological parameters and tectonic directions of the Muradi and Usholta Caves were mapped using the compass-clinometer and laser distance meter, to compile 3D models of the caves. To our knowledge these are the first 3D models of …

Preserving Identity Through Discourse In A Changing Ladakh, Emma Cyr Apr 2018

Preserving Identity Through Discourse In A Changing Ladakh, Emma Cyr

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Situated in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, Ladakh is a vast high altitude desert. It's looming mountains, rocky vistas, crystalline lakes, and unique indigenous culture makes Ladakh not only a favorite destination for adventurers, thrill seekers, and camera toters of all types, but also marks it as one of the most ecologically fragile areas in the world. However, Ladakh has only been open for tourism since 1974. Prior to then, the region was fairly isolated, open to travellers only a few months of the year, when the high, icy passes melted enough to let trade through. In the time …

Storytelling: For Public Organizations, Jeffrey Valcin, Brittany Wilson, Vivian Miley

Media Literacy: How the Era of Fake News Affects Public Service

By definition, storytelling is just that – one who tells or writes stories (Dictionary.com, 2018). Why is this an important aspect in the public sector? Simply because it is universal. Stories are generated on a daily basis from government employees, politicians, citizens, and, of course, the media outlets (Van Hulst, 2014). While the end result of each story may vary, it is critical that as an individual or organization in the public sector you have the tools and support to not only share your own story, but to do it in the most effective manner possible. A quote attributable to …
