The Impacts Of Green Spaces On Crime In New York City, Matthew Edward Iannone Jr. May 2018

The Impacts Of Green Spaces On Crime In New York City, Matthew Edward Iannone Jr.

Student Theses 2015-Present

From the early 1960s through the mid-1990s, crime in New York City ran rampant. With a gradually dwindling police during this time, a high unemployment rate, and an rapidly increasing metropolitan population, crime peaked in the early 1990s, with the murder rate hitting a record-high of 2,245 in 1990. When Mayor Rudy Giuliani took office in 1994 and appoint Bill Bratton as the NYPD police commissioner, these rates immediately plunged. Numerous factors may have contributed to this sudden decline in crime: the police force grew significantly through the 1990s, more criminals were placed and held in prison, and the economic …

A Historical, Political And Social Look Into The Problem Of Floatable Pollution In Nyc's Bronx River, Zoe L. Bellapigna May 2018

A Historical, Political And Social Look Into The Problem Of Floatable Pollution In Nyc's Bronx River, Zoe L. Bellapigna

Student Theses 2015-Present

Once clean enough to be considered as a potential potable water source for New York City, the Bronx River and the overall quality of the water has steadily declined since European arrival in North America. As the socioeconomic divide between Westchester County and the Bronx developed and grew, so did the flow of floatable pollutants in the Bronx River. Quantitative data on the current number and category of floatable pollutants removed from the river in 2017 through the Bronx River Alliances’ Project WASTE is explored to provide the most up to date data on the trash in the river. Research …

Plymouth Business School

The main purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical model to explain the impact of big data and predictive analytics (BDPA) on sustainable business development goal of the organization. We have developed our theoretical model using resource based view (RBV) logic and contingency theory (CT). The model was further tested using PLS-SEM (partial least squares- Structural Equation Modelling) following Peng and Lai (2012) arguments. We gathered 205 responses using survey based instrument for PLS-SEM. The statistical results suggest that out of four research hypotheses, we find support for three hypotheses (H1-H3) and we did not found support for …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Much has changed in the 30 years since non-motorized modes were first included in regional travel demand models. As interest in understanding behavioral influences on walking and policies requiring estimates of walking activity increase, it is important to consider how pedestrian travel is modeled at a regional level. This paper evaluates the state of the practice of modeling walk trips among the largest 48 metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and assesses changes made over the last 5 years. By reviewing model documentation and responses to a survey of MPO modelers, this paper summarizes current practices, describes six pedestrian modeling frameworks, and …

Catching The Cloud And Pinning It Down: The Social And Environmental Impacts Of Data Centers, Heather Ipsen

Theses - ALL

As reliance on social media, mobile devices, and computers has grown in developed nations worldwide, data centers have become an important, but poorly understood, part of this digital age. These massive structures, which are increasingly built in rural areas, store digital files and images. Despite the clear importance of cloud computing, geographers have not studied this infrastructure or its effect on nearby communities and the physical environment. This project examines the social and environmental impacts of the development and operation of data centers, using a Facebook data center in Prineville, Oregon as a case study. It explores what impact the …

Essays On Retirement Behavior During The Housing Boom And Bust, Wancong Fu

Dissertations - ALL

This study contains two chapters. The first uses the Prentice-Gloeckler-Meyer proportional hazard model with individual heterogeneity to investigate the effects of loss aversion concerning the housing market and the local foreclosure rate on retirement during the housing bust periods. The second chapter creates a dynamic programming life-cycle model with the housing wealth and uses the Method of Simulated Moments to systematically study the retirement and saving behavior during the housing boom and bust (the years 2000-2014).

Housing wealth is one of the biggest savings for elderly. It relates to the financial security of elderly after retirement. After the incredible growth …

Operating Outside Of Empire: Trading Citizenship In The Atlantic World, 1783-1815, Mark Dragoni

Dissertations - ALL

Operating Outside of Empire: Trading Citizenship in the Atlantic World, 1783-1815, looks at markets and ships as spaces for negotiation between merchants and the state. The dissertation follows the experiences of former British colonists in America who won independence and then immediately tried to find a way to get back into the British empire. For American merchants, such as Nicholas Low, William Constable, and Thomas Handasyd Perkins, the inconsistently-governed Caribbean provided an entry point to the greater British Atlantic and the markets of the empire. These merchants won access by exploiting the opportunities offered by environmental catastrophes, slave rebellions and …

“When Our Crops Burn, We Burn”: Household Cultivation, Inattention And Exclusion In Tajikistan's Water Management Reform, Katherine Jeanette Macdonald May 2018

“When Our Crops Burn, We Burn”: Household Cultivation, Inattention And Exclusion In Tajikistan's Water Management Reform, Katherine Jeanette Macdonald

Theses - ALL

The Republic of Tajikistan possesses the largest amount of internally produced surface water in Central Asia; however, poor irrigation management has led to water shortages in agrarian communities. In support of government efforts to reform water management, international development actors have established Water Users’ Associations (WUAs) throughout the country. WUAs are non-governmental groups of irrigation water users responsible for local infrastructure maintenance, conflict resolution, and scheduling water distribution. These groups are expected to increase participation in irrigation management, the equity and efficiency of water supply to agricultural plots and by extension, crop yields and food security. Drawing on interviews with …

The South Central Soundscape: Understanding The Sounds Of The Streets As Social Commentary In Postindustrial Los Angeles, Kevin Prescott Morris

Theses - ALL

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how Black popular music sonically represents urban, ghetto landscapes through lyrics, timbres, tones, tempos, and samples as forms of social commentary and signifiers of an authentic Black experience. This project adopts the concept of the soundscape in order to tease out the ways music artists and producers sonically recreate their social environments, specifically understood as “the streets,” in order to provide nuanced social critiques about the social forces that dictate daily life. The project is situated in the South Central section of Los Angeles, California and follows a sonic chronology that traces …

The study investigates how feminist frameworks enable grassroots women to combat the simultaneous effects of violence, poverty, and trauma by analyzing the processes of collaboration between grassroots and professional feminist organizations and the effects of political violence in their communities. Drawing on political anthropology and transnational feminist scholarship, the dissertation examines these processes against the backdrop of a regional hegemonic project …

The Effect Of Urban Transportation Systems On Employment Outcomes And Traffic Congestion, Jindong Pang May 2018

The Effect Of Urban Transportation Systems On Employment Outcomes And Traffic Congestion, Jindong Pang

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation comprises two papers that examine the effect of urban transportation systems on employment outcomes and traffic congestion. The first paper evaluates the labor market effects of subway systems on low-skilled workers. A model of labor supply predicts that this should improve search and employment outcomes. The empirical findings confirm that improved subway access increases low-skilled labor force participation. Related effects for light rail and bus service are much smaller. For low-skilled men without a car, a 10 percent expansion in subway, rail, and bus service increases labor force participation by 3.0, 0.3, and 0.3 percentage points, respectively. Improved …

Geographic Variation In Sex Ratios Of The Us Immigrant Population: Identifying Sources Of Difference, Erin Trouth Hofmann, E. Miranda Reiter May 2018

Geographic Variation In Sex Ratios Of The Us Immigrant Population: Identifying Sources Of Difference, Erin Trouth Hofmann, E. Miranda Reiter

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper describes geographic variation in the sex composition of the foreign-born population in the US since 1990, and uses Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition to identify key sources of variation in regional sex ratios. We use data from the 1990 and 2000 US Censuses, and from the 2007–2011 American Community Survey, to create estimates of the size and characteristics of foreign-born populations at the level of Consistent Public-Use Microdata Areas. We find substantial local- and region-level variation in population sex ratios, with the highest sex ratios in the South and Midwest. This variation is partly explained by differences in the age- and …

Factors Impacting Teacher Turnover In Texas Public School Districts With Fewer Than 500 Students: A Mixed Methods Study, Paige N. Benoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rural Texas districts experience higher rates in teacher turnover compared to other districts. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study was designed to explore the relationships among district size and the factors that contributed to teacher turnover. Data was collected from Texas public school districts with fewer than 500 students. A simple correlation determined that no relationship existed between district size and teacher turnover rate during the 2016-2017 school year in the 313 districts that had fewer than 500 students. Participating districts came from two different regions. Four superintendents were interviewed about the factors surrounding turnover regarding the teacher turnover in …

Science, Advocacy, Policy, Planning: Tools For Advancing Transportation Equity, Garrett S. Mcallister May 2018

Science, Advocacy, Policy, Planning: Tools For Advancing Transportation Equity, Garrett S. Mcallister

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

The theme of this portfolio is how different tools and approaches can be used for advancing transportation equity. Broadly defined, transportation equity is about fairness in transportation. There are a number of ways this fairness can be assessed. The most common way to assess transportation equity is by looking at the fairness of outcomes, distributed geographically, socially, or even by mode of transportation. Equity can also be defined by the fairness of processes. The first half of the portfolio illustrates some of the problems with the current transportation system and how it is unhealthy (Piece 1) and unjust (Piece 2). …

Identify The Qualifications, Major Duties, Responsibilities And Expected Outcomes For The Chief Experience Officer Among Health Care Systems In The United States, Kathleen D. Davis

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The Chief Experience Officer (CXO) role has emerged in health care in the last five to ten years. There is an absence of role descriptions, qualifications, duties, expected outcomes and reporting structures available in the literature. Most of the available information are reports from private organizations like the Experience Innovation Network, The Beryl Institute (TBI), Catalyst Healthcare Research (CHR) and The Health Care Advisory Board (Boehm, 2015; Boehm & Petty, 2016; Lauing & Woods, 2015; Palmer & Prince, 2013; The State of the Patient Experience, 2015; Wolf, 2015; Wolf & Prince, 2014) who produce information for members and are not …

Caleb Strong, Charles Pinckney, And Luther Martin And The Constitutional Crises Of The Early Republic, Jason Yonce May 2018

Caleb Strong, Charles Pinckney, And Luther Martin And The Constitutional Crises Of The Early Republic, Jason Yonce

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This study determines the place of surviving Framers of the Constitution from the American convention to the constitutional crises of the early republic. Only seventeen of these men survived in 1819. In 1820, that number had dwindled to thirteen. Rather than playing background roles while the next generation took the reins of government of the early republic, many of these men were at the forefront of the major turning points of the early republic and their inherent constitutional questions. For Caleb Strong of Massachusetts, the questions concerned the nature of the new union, whether a state could leave the union, …

Judith Jarvis Thomson On Abortion; A Libertarian Perspective, Walter E. Block May 2018

Judith Jarvis Thomson On Abortion; A Libertarian Perspective, Walter E. Block

DePaul Journal of Health Care Law

Introduction:

Judith Jarvis Thompson, an eminent philosopher from MIT, has written the most widely cited article of all those ever written about abortion. She likens the fetus to a trespasser. Suppose you wake up in bed next to a famous violinist who is (innocently) connected to your kidney, through a sort of umbilical cord, without which he will die. What rights does he have? What obligations do you have? Using this brilliant analogy to pregnancy, she sheds light on the abortion controversy.

Method:

The method used in the present paper is to widely quote Thompson’s (1971) essay, and then to …
