Entangling, Oscillating, Frilux-Ing: Branding The Art Of Design, Sumit Pandey
Entangling, Oscillating, Frilux-Ing: Branding The Art Of Design, Sumit Pandey
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Recent strategic design and management discourse has identified gaps in the current framing of design for organisations, specifically highlighting a lack of discussions related to emergent design cultures and calling for a strategic framing of the art of design. Connecting and expanding these conceptual discussions with reflections from practice-based research through design, we seek to further the understanding of how design can be strategically translated into organisations. Drawing parallels between a strategic framing of design, and brands as enacted or manifested strategy, we present reflections from a design process of branding the strategic art of design for an academic research …
Critical Placemaking: Towards A More Critical Engagement For Participatory Design In The Urban Environment, Tania Allen, Sara Glee Queen
Critical Placemaking: Towards A More Critical Engagement For Participatory Design In The Urban Environment, Tania Allen, Sara Glee Queen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper offers a framework for design research that invites civic participation in the construction of place, and aims to reignite the conversation Nigel Cross raised in 1971 as a part of the first proceeding of the Design Research Society, calling on a need for user participation and intentional boundary-crossing. The need for new methods is no more evident than in the field of urban design. As global populations are migrating at unprecedented rates, new and different ideas and cultures are integrating and colliding at a high velocity. Additionally, the digital tools we use to understand and navigate urban environments …
Using Heterotopias To Characterise Interactions In Physical/Digital Spaces, Haider Ali Akmal, Paul Coulton
Using Heterotopias To Characterise Interactions In Physical/Digital Spaces, Haider Ali Akmal, Paul Coulton
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper addresses the complexity of designing interactions in hybrid digital/physical spaces, in which notions of public and private are becoming increasingly blurred, by using a philosophical lens to characterise such spaces. In particular it references the ideas presented by Michel Foucault in his essay “Of Other Spaces”. It proposes the presence of a spatial division within physical and virtual, in terms of private and public, and juxtaposes them through a Heterotopical Model for Inter-Spatial Interaction through which designers can examine the coexistence of physical and digital interactions. The purpose of modelling this juxtaposition is to help designers understand the …
Scenes Of Writing, Anne Burdick
Scenes Of Writing, Anne Burdick
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper looks at how speculative fiction can provide a design space to explore the effects of technologies for critical interpretation. Using Trina: A Design Fiction as a case study, the paper builds upon Lucy Suchman’s study into how technology teams design “the human” in tandem with the computer, asking can there be a model of “the human” suited to technologies for subjective judgment? Looking closely at the characters in Trina, we see individuals whose capacities, specificities, social histories, and individual biographies inform the degree of agency that each has with the writing technologies that define their work and worth. …
Platform Ethics In Technology: What Happens To The User?, Anuradha Reddy, Maria Hellström Reimer
Platform Ethics In Technology: What Happens To The User?, Anuradha Reddy, Maria Hellström Reimer
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In recent times, the design of technology platforms has been largely driven by the optimization of data flows in large-scale urban initiatives. Even though many platforms have good intentions, rising expectations for data efficiency and reliability, the configuration of users and user’s interactions inevitably have ethical consequences. It has become increasingly difficult to foresee how a wide diversity of users fares against a spatially complex and materially incomplete management and distribution of data flows. Through the logic of platformization, we explore how this plays out in the context of open mapping platforms - in the case of an individual elderly …
Regimes Of Digital Quantification: Making Data-Driven Decisions?, Martin Tironi, Matías Valderrama
Regimes Of Digital Quantification: Making Data-Driven Decisions?, Martin Tironi, Matías Valderrama
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In light of the proliferation of sensors, data and analytics, multiple digital quantification regimes are emerging under promises of a revolutionary change in the way in which decisions are made in areas such as urban planning and government. These regimes present a growing need to differentiate themselves in order to capitalize their data, deploying particular technologies that go beyond the digital. In this paper, we review two digital quantification regimes of urban cycling in Santiago, Chile: the RUBI device and KAPPO smartphone application. Through the study of the design of material and narrative technologies of these regimes, we will show …
Bookmaking As Critical And Feminist Practice Of Design, Ramia Mazé
Bookmaking As Critical And Feminist Practice Of Design, Ramia Mazé
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Expansion of the arts in academia has called into question concepts, norms and regulations concerning writing and publishing. Given precedents of ‘critical practices of design’ and ‘research through practice’ grappling with such questions, I take these as ways to reconsider the academic activity of making a book (‘bookmaking’) as a critical and feminist practice of design. Through feminist modalities articulated by Jane Rendell – namely, collectivity, interiority, alterity, materiality, and performativity – I describe two edited books, through which I am able to discuss critical and feminist orientations in bookmaking practice. I argue that feminist practice critiques but also projects, …
Fostering Commonfare. Entanglements Between Participatory Design And Feminism, Mariacristina Sciannamblo, Peter Lyle, Maurizio Teli
Fostering Commonfare. Entanglements Between Participatory Design And Feminism, Mariacristina Sciannamblo, Peter Lyle, Maurizio Teli
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper addresses the role of critical theories to knowledge-making and world- making practices in design research. We discuss the agential and performative power of feminist technoscience sensibilities in shaping a European participatory design project – called Commonfare – which aims to confront the risk of social exclusion as a result of precariousness, low income, unemployment, which is increasingly affecting the European population. More specifically, we explore the entanglement of critical approaches and material practices shaping aspects of the project through three empirical examples – related to the formation of the project consortium, the methodological approach adopted by partners, and …
Methods Across Borders: Reflections Of Using Design-Led Qualitative Methods In Burkina Faso, Adolphe Yemtim, Achille Sévérin Lebongo Onana, Charlotte Ray, Jamie Cross, Craig Martin, Arno G. Verhoeven
Methods Across Borders: Reflections Of Using Design-Led Qualitative Methods In Burkina Faso, Adolphe Yemtim, Achille Sévérin Lebongo Onana, Charlotte Ray, Jamie Cross, Craig Martin, Arno G. Verhoeven
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper presents an overview of activities of a funded project interrogating energy requirements of displaced populations in the Goudoubo camp in Burkina Faso. The overall project adopts a qualitative approach to enquiry using methods often employed by designers in participatory and human-centred design projects, with training provided for embedded researchers from disciplines other than design through a series of workshops prior fieldwork. The overall project aims to build a qualitative toolkit for enquiry into the daily lives of refuges and their lived energy requirements. The paper asks whether the engaged design methods, understood in the context of “global north” …
Point Of View Framework: Describing The Audience’S Emotional Connection To Information Design Artifacts, Soojin Jun
Point Of View Framework: Describing The Audience’S Emotional Connection To Information Design Artifacts, Soojin Jun
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper introduces Point of View framework to examine design strategies for enriching the audience’s emotional connection to information design artifacts. The framework consists of four thematic variations of point of view: perspective, person, mode, principle. The model is intended to accommodate the developing research agenda of exploring the emotional experience between the audience and the information design artifacts, which is becoming increasingly concerned with the wider impact of information products on people. Analysis of two information design cases are presented to demonstrate how the framework can be used to examine different kinds of design strategies in response to specific …
Data Sensification: Beyond Representation Modality, Toward Encoding Data In Experience, Trevor Hogan
Data Sensification: Beyond Representation Modality, Toward Encoding Data In Experience, Trevor Hogan
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Humans have represented data for thousands of years, yet the design process we use to encode data remains almost exclusively related to modalities such as visual, haptic, auditory, olfactory and gustatory. This paper proposes a novel approach to designing data representations, where we move beyond mapping data to a modality or combination of modalities and instead facilitate an understanding of the underlying data through people’s overall experience of it. Based on a review of existing data representations that fall into this research area, but have not been discussed under one common term, this paper defines, for the first time, the …
The Social Provision Of Healthcare To Migrants In The Us And In China, Van C. Tran, Katharine M. Donato
The Social Provision Of Healthcare To Migrants In The Us And In China, Van C. Tran, Katharine M. Donato
Publications and Research
This article develops a comparative analysis of healthcare provision to migrants in the US and in China. It proceeds in three parts. First, we begin by describing the growth of the unauthorized population and trace the evolution of social provision of healthcare to immigrants, highlighting the restrictive nature of federal social provisions and greater autonomy of state and local governments in redefining eligibility criteria in the US. Second, we examine the impact of legal status on healthcare access and utilization among Mexicans, using original data from the 2007 Hispanic Healthcare Survey and the Mexican Migration Project. We find that unauthorized …

Flannery O'Connor As A Colonizer, Emily Jones
Flannery O'Connor As A Colonizer, Emily Jones
BYU English Symposium
The purpose of this essay is to examine the works of the American short story author Flannery O’Connor through a postcolonial critical literary lens. O’Connor is widely recognized as an influential Catholic American writer from the South. As such, her writing demonstrates a unique blend of Catholic mystery with Southern manners. A well-known characteristic found in her short stories is the concept of violent revelation.
This paper explores the idea that Flannery O’Connor enters the colonial world herself and assumes the role of colonizer. In this particular context, Miss O’Connor invades and conquers the Southern states with unconventional ideals that …

Haiti's Resistant Press In The Age Of Jean-Claude Duvalier, 1971-1986., Jennifer Garcon
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the consolidation and overthrow of Jean-Claude Duvalier’s regime by tracing the resurgence of independent and increasingly oppositional Haitian print and radio media after 1971 and its growing role in national politics. Challenging interpretations that stress the suddenness of the political transformation of civil society leading to Duvalier’s ouster in 1986, I analyze a longer history of unrest and discontent as expressed in the pages of newspapers and weekly journals, as well as in radio broadcasts. I argue that the devolution of the Duvalier dictatorship can be traced back to the opening of limited press freedom in 1971. …

Producing The Past: Contested Heritage And Tourism In Glastonbury And Tintagel, Vivian Beatrice Gornik
Producing The Past: Contested Heritage And Tourism In Glastonbury And Tintagel, Vivian Beatrice Gornik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Heritage, the “present-centered” use of the past (Ashworth 2007) influences the identities of contemporary citizens (Palmer 2005, Sommer 2009). Grasping the ways in which the production and consumption of heritage takes place is becoming increasingly relevant in a post-Brexit Britain, where the national identity is constantly up for debate. This research asks: what role does heritage tourism play in (re)producing hegemonic national narratives in Glastonbury and Tintagel? And subsequently, what do these narratives say about broader conceptualizations of English identity?
Arthurian legend permeates the historical narrative in both locations. According to the legend, King Arthur was conceived and born in …

Beyond Metrics? The Role Of Hydrologic Baseline Archetypes In Environmental Water Management, Belize A. Lane, Samuel Sandoval-Solis, Eric D. Stein, Sarah M. Yarnell, Gregory B. Pasternack, Helen E. Dahlke
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Balancing ecological and human water needs often requires characterizing key aspects of the natural flow regime and then predicting ecological response to flow alterations. Flow metrics are generally relied upon to characterize long-term average statistical properties of the natural flow regime (hydrologic baseline conditions). However, some key aspects of hydrologic baseline conditions may be better understood through more complete consideration of continuous patterns of daily, seasonal, and inter-annual variability than through summary metrics. Here we propose the additional use of high-resolution dimensionless archetypes of regional stream classes to improve understanding of baseline hydrologic conditions and inform regional environmental flows assessments. …

The Political Potency Of Tibetan Identity In Pop Music And Dunglen, Anna Morcom
The Political Potency Of Tibetan Identity In Pop Music And Dunglen, Anna Morcom
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Since their beginnings in the 1980s, Tibetan pop music and dunglen (lute songs of northeastern Tibet) have shown strong expressions of Tibetan identity. They also represent a flourishing area of Tibetan language cultural production. This is significant after the repetitive propaganda songs of the Cultural Revolution and given the pressures and restrictions in Tibet on language and religion in particular. However, in this article, I critique straightforward interpretations of the Tibetanness of Tibetan popular music as representing a zone of assertion or resistance, arguing instead that the political potency of Tibetan pop music and dunglen is far more double-edged, coopted …

Himalayan Hybridity And The Evolution Of Ladakhi Popular Music, Noé Dinnerstein
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Historically, Ladakh in the Western Himalayas was a significant nexus of Trans-Himalayan caravan trade, and thus exhibited a significant hybridity in its material, linguistic, religious, and musical culture. In this paper, I examine the rise of Ladakhi popular music in and through these crossroads, paying attention to themes of hybridity. I look at the development of Ladakhi ethnic, political, and musical identity, and the role of government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and individuals with regard to the rise of new musical genres. Accompanying the historical survey of the music is as discussion of the evolutions of textual content. Changes in mass …

Encoding Spatial Experience In Garhwali Popular Music Cassettes, Andrew B. Alter
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Connections between particular sounds and geographically conceived places/spaces seems to be a recurrent part of many repertoires in different parts of the Himalaya. A number of examples exist in which ritual repertoires are linked to pilgrimage pathways, to specific spiritual sites or to an ordering of space in relation to geomorphic realities. In the North Indian region of Garhwal, these connections are most directly made within wedding processions in which particular repertoire items are mapped against particular landscapes and pathways. In other repertoire items, specific motivic devices are used in more subtle ways to enhance the spatial experience of performers …
