Interpreting Contemporary Pilgrimage As Spiritual Journey Or Aesthetic Tourism Along The Appalachian Trail, Kip Redick
Interpreting Contemporary Pilgrimage As Spiritual Journey Or Aesthetic Tourism Along The Appalachian Trail, Kip Redick
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage and tourism can be interpreted as overlapping travel experiences. Given all the changes mass transportation and communication technologies have brought, understanding the phenomenon of pilgrimage becomes fraught with ambiguity. Is pilgrimage better understood as a tourist excursion that affords instances of religious devotion? Pilgrimage routes and long distance scenic trails have their aesthetic appeal, which pilgrims and tourists enjoy. Is there a difference in the way these two groups walk these trails that become manifest through aesthetic experiences and encounters? Looking at long distance hiking on the Appalachian Trail as spiritual journey opens up a reinterpretation of both pilgrimage …
Ecology Of Pilgrimage: Building Socio-Ecological Community On The Way, Peggy L. Eppig
Ecology Of Pilgrimage: Building Socio-Ecological Community On The Way, Peggy L. Eppig
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
A developed sense of interdependence with the socio-ecological landscapes of pilgrimage can serve as a path for accepting and reducing the impact we have in our sacred travels. Developing ecological habits of mind allows the pilgrim to draw deeper meanings from and thus greater affinity with the natural world. Raising awareness of environmental issues and appreciating the interaction of humans and the natural world helps modern pilgrims play an important role in conservation and restoration of pilgrimage landscapes.
What Is Pilgrimage?, George D. Greenia
What Is Pilgrimage?, George D. Greenia
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The term ‘pilgrimage’ has become a commonplace in modern conversations about any travel that is announced as ‘intentional,’ ‘purposeful,’ ‘transformative,’ or simply promises to be ‘authentic.’ Scholars have to navigate between the twin advantage and liability that pilgrimage studies operate under no one disciplinary lens or unified methodology, and the historical range is infinite. Many feel that modern tourism needs to preserve a place for the respectful non-believer without degrading the experience of traditional religious pilgrims. To some degree all intentional travelers are open to an experience of the transcendent that’s compatible with their belief systems and they are willing …

A Method To Develop Signals To Trigger Adaptation To Sea-Level Rise, Scott Stephens, Rob G. Bell Dr, Judy Lawrence
A Method To Develop Signals To Trigger Adaptation To Sea-Level Rise, Scott Stephens, Rob G. Bell Dr, Judy Lawrence
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Dynamic adaptive pathways planning (DAPP) is being used to plan for adaptation to increasing, but uncertain, risk over time. Signals and triggers are critically needed—comparing observed values with their pre-specified trigger-values will enable timely adaptive actions. We demonstrate a statistical modelling approach to design signals and triggers to avoid the consequences of deeper and more frequent flooding as sea level continues to rise, and apply it to a New Zealand sea level case study. The key advance is the framing of storm-tide frequency in terms of probable timing of the number of events that reach a specific height threshold within …

Benchmarking Apache Spark Spatial Libraries, Hector Muro Mauri, Rob Knapen, Arend Ligtenberg, Sander Janssen, Ioannis N. Athanasiadis
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Apache Spark is one of the most widely used and fast-evolving cluster-computing frame- works for big data. This research investigates the state of practice in the Apache Spark ecosystem for managing spatial data, with a specific focus on spatial vector data. Apache Spark is a relatively new platform, and the associated libraries for geospatial data extensions are still work-in-progress. In this work, three libraries for managing geospatial information in Apache Spark have been investigated, namely GeoSpark, GeoPySpark, and Magellan. First we designed and performed a suite of functionality tests, to explore how much can be done with. Then, we benchmarked …

Seims: A Spatially-Explicit Integrated Modeling System For Agricultural Watershed, Junzhi Liu, A-Xing Zhu, Liang-Jun Zhu, Hui Wu, Cheng-Zhi Qin
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Irrigation and drainage engineering changes natural water flow pathways in agricultural watershed, which have not been well characterized in existing hydrological models. This research developed a Spatially-Explicit Integrated Modeling System (SEIMS) for agricultural watershed to represent the water and nutrient migration processes at a fine scale. First, a vector-based data model was proposed to represent spatial simulation units and the flow relationships among them. Polygons were used as simulation units for farmland and ponds considering their irregular shapes, and regular quadrates were used for natural land covers such as forest and grassland. Lines were used to represent irrigation canals and …
Community Degradation In Post-Industrial America, Graham Murphy
Community Degradation In Post-Industrial America, Graham Murphy
JCCC Honors Journal
In the summers of 2016 and 2017 I travelled to two distinctive places in America in a mission to better understand the issues which most affected people there. The first of the two locations was Kansas, where I traversed its length on a bicycle, stopping along the way to meet people in the rural communities and discuss with them the hardships that they face on a number of fronts. The second location was Flint, Michigan, where I was drawn, three years after the water crisis, to learn how its effects have impacted the residents. Having conducted observational, first-hand research of …

Viability Theory And Agent-Based Modeling: A New, Synergistic Approach To Modeling Environmental Conflict, Todd Bendor, Juergen Scheffran
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this presentation, we will introduce a conceptual and theoretical framework that unifies several complex systems modeling approaches for the purposes of better understanding, representing, exploring, and resolving environmental conflict. This method, which we call the VIABLE framework (Values and Investments from Agent-Based interaction and Learning in Environmental systems), builds on techniques from agent-based modeling (ABM), evolutionary game theory, system dynamics (SD) modeling, and network analysis. We will introduce viability theory, the mathematical basis of our VIABLE modeling method, as well as approaches to re-conceptualizing conflict states using this theory. We will also discuss the wide range of …

Complexity Of Numerical Modeling For Predicting The Mechanisms Of Toxic Algae Bloom In Lake, Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Dr. Daisuke Kitazawa
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A three dimensional hydrodynamic ecosystem coupled model was employed to simulate algae transition and toxin produced ability under the nutrients limited conditions in eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura, Japan. Numerical simulation was carried out for the four years of the period 2005–2009. Algae have shifted seasonally and annually between 2005 and 2009, among three major algal: Microcystis, Planktothrix and Cyclotella. The mathematical model reproduced well the transitions of dominant algae in the four years by calibrating ecological parameters. The biomass of Planktothrix suddenly increased in the summer of 2008, and Planktothrix became the dominant species. Longer periods of stratification, lower …

Numerical Modeling On The Pollutant Effects In The Ecosystem Of Kamaishi Bay (Japan) By Coupling Mec And Ecopath Model, Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Dr. Daisuke Kitazawa
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A three dimensional Marine Environmental Committee (MEC) model was conducted to describe the specific circulation patterns of currents, temperature, and salinity driven by wind and tide forcing in Kamaishi Bay at Miyagi Prefecture in the Great East Japan. The major concern of this study is the diffusion of pollutants caused by 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami disaster impacts on marine ecosystem. In this study, we also simulate the changes of water quality and ecosystems structure from January 2009 to December 2012. The MEC model has been used to predict the distributions of various key water quality indicators and tide flow in …
Estimating State-Industry Employment, With An Application To Industrial Localization, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Estimating State-Industry Employment, With An Application To Industrial Localization, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Economics Faculty Publications
We describe a method to construct an industry-by-state repeated cross-section of employment at the most disaggregated level publicly available, covering 1963–2012. Nondisclosed data are estimated with a procedure using the hierarchical information structure. To illustrate the usefulness of the procedure, the resulting estimated data are tested to determine if industrial localization of the processed food sector has changed over the last 50 years in the United States. Our findings suggest it has not changed systemically despite variation in levels of localization within industries.

Nostalgia And Culture: The Relationship Between Indicators Of Acculturation And Nostalgia, Borsali Awicha Amina, Benhabib Abderrezak
Nostalgia And Culture: The Relationship Between Indicators Of Acculturation And Nostalgia, Borsali Awicha Amina, Benhabib Abderrezak
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
In this article we test the relationship between indicators of acculturation (language, media, selfidentification, religion, food and clothing) and nostalgia. It checks empirically, on a sample of 201, the existence of a significant effect between our independent variables and our dependent variable. The results of analysis of variance, One-Way Anova, reveal that the home language, the food of home country, the media, self-identification with the origin country and the religion of the origin country have a signifi cant impact on nostalgia. This article contributes to new theoretical elements in the field of nostalgia and culture as a complement of several …

The urbanization of the Las Vegas Valley has transformed this part of the Mohave Desert into a green oasis by introducing many non-native plant species, some of which are allergenic. Typically, one monitoring station is established per city to obtain pollen counts for an entire metropolitan area. However, variations in pollen concentrations could occur among different microenvironments. The objective of this study is to measure and compare pollen concentrations in five locations in Las Vegas to determine if there are significant differences between microenvironments within the city. Air samples were collected from five sites across the Las Vegas Valley over …
The Emerging Transition Design Approach, Terry Irwin
The Emerging Transition Design Approach, Terry Irwin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper outlines an emerging Transition Design approach for addressing “wicked” problems (such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, crime, poverty, pollution, etc.) and catalysing societal transitions toward more sustainable and desirable futures. Wicked problems are “systems problems” that exist within large, socio-technical systems and therefore require new problem-solving approaches. The Transition Design Framework brings together an evolving body of practices that can be used to: 1. visualize and “map” complex problems and their interconnections and interdependencies; 2. situate them within large, spatio-temporal contexts; 3. identify and bridge stakeholder conflicts and leverage alignments; 4. facilitate stakeholders in the co-creation of …

This is a position paper towards the establishment of a research network to address the impact of tacit experiential knowledge, emotion, and cultural perspective on a designer’s decision-making during a design process. With this network, we are aiming to start a focused discussion across geographies and cultures regarding the role and impact of designers’ emotions within their own design process. The function of this is to foreground the experiential and emotional domain of designers’ practice and examine the role of tacit experiential knowledge in design decision-making. The paper sets up the basis and context of discussion, exploring the three key …

A newly recognized pneumococcal serotype 35D, which differs from the 35B polysaccharide in structure and serology by not binding to factor serum 35a, was recently reported. The genetic basis for this distinctive serology is due to the presence of an inactivating mutation in wciG, which encodes an O-acetyltransferase responsible for O-acetylation of a galactofuranose. Here, we assessed the genomic data of a worldwide pneumococcal collection to identify serotype 35D isolates and understand their geographical distribution, genetic background and invasiveness potential. Of 21,980 pneumococcal isolates, 444 were originally typed as serotype 35B by PneumoCaT. Analysis of wciGrevealed 23 isolates …

The municipality of Eindhoven is exploring her new role in a transforming society, just as other local governments. This role requires (behavior) changes on personal, organizational and societal levels. In this paper we shed light on how reflection for civil servants can be stimulated and supported through design. We present our qualitative empirical study carried out in the municipality of Eindhoven, which resulted into the reflection tool called Tegelen. Herein, we introduce a novel approach to support reflection for both personal as organizational usage, within individual and group sessions. Evaluating the concept in context showed that reflection benefits from the …

The Fashion Collection Recalibrated - A Design Tool Furthering Sustainable Strategies, Ulla Ræbild, Anne Louise Bang
DRS Biennial Conference Series
At present the fashion and textile industries are under political and environmental pressure to make their business models more sustainable. In response, transformative thinking within the industry is pushing forward a sustainable paradigm shift. One consequence is that traditional design tools are challenged to incorporate and contribute to the solutions. In this paper, we focus on the fashion collection, which is traditionally understood as a range of garment designs, that are seasonally determined. As the notion of the fashion collection is under-researched, the aim of the paper is to investigate ways in which the fashion collection may be recalibrated as …

Large organisations use design and design thinking to create value; however, there is a low awareness and practice of design and design thinking in smaller businesses. 69% of Irish businesses never use design, or use it only at a superficial level (DJEI, 2016). Previous research on the relationship between design and the wider-enterprise base in Ireland has focused on highly innovative and successful businesses that are already accustomed to design and have ten or more employees. The result of these studies has produced stories of how design creates value for each business, making it difficult to understand how it is …
