Ya No Tengo Vecinos: Local Understandings Of Neighborhood Change In Cusco, Peru, Kalyn Mae Finnell
Ya No Tengo Vecinos: Local Understandings Of Neighborhood Change In Cusco, Peru, Kalyn Mae Finnell
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis involves the San Blas neighborhood in the Historic Center of Cusco, Peru. It aims to better understand local effects of the changes that San Blas has undergone since the 1990s and to explore possibilities related to improving the qualities of life of long-term residents (vecinos) who have lived in San Blas for at least two generations. It has two principal objectives: 1) Make recommendations to present to various public and private entities who have a presence and influence over the San Blas neighborhood to improve the likelihood that vecino demands are heard, 2) Illuminate the ways that vecinos …
Re-Reading The Map Of Middle-Earth: Fan Cartography's Engagement With Tolkien's Legendarium, Stentor Danielson
Re-Reading The Map Of Middle-Earth: Fan Cartography's Engagement With Tolkien's Legendarium, Stentor Danielson
Journal of Tolkien Research
J.R.R. Tolkien provided an elaborate textual history for his writings about Middle-earth, but did not do so for his now-iconic maps. This paper examines how this difference, in concert with the general tendency of readers to treat maps as objective records of geography, has manifested in Tolkien's work and fan works based upon it. An examination of fan cartography shows a strong tendency to treat the published maps as records of geographical fact rather than historical documents from within Middle-earth.

Paired Dissolved And Particulate Phase Cu Isotope Distributions In The South Atlantic, Susan H. Little, Corey Archer, Angela Milne, Christian Schlosser, Eric P. Achterberg, Maeve C. Lohan, Derek Vance
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© 2018 The Authors Copper (Cu) is both an essential micronutrient and toxic to photosynthesizing microorganisms at low concentrations. Its dissolved vertical distribution in the oceans is unusual, being neither a nutrient-type nor scavenged-type element. This distribution is attributed to biological uptake in the surface ocean with remineralisation at depth, combined with strong organic complexation by dissolved ligands, scavenging onto particles, and benthic sedimentary input. We present coupled dissolved and particulate phase Cu isotope data along the UK-GEOTRACES South Atlantic section, alongside higher resolution dissolved and particulate phase Cu concentration measurements. Our dissolved phase isotope data contribute to an emerging …
Case Study: Using Crime Data And Open Source Data To Design A Police Patrol Area, Brent Allen
Case Study: Using Crime Data And Open Source Data To Design A Police Patrol Area, Brent Allen
SMU Data Science Review
This case study examines how to use existing crime data augmented with open source data to design a patrol area. We used the a demand signal of "calls for service" vice reports which summarize calls for service. Additionally, we augmented our existing data with traffic data from Google Maps. Traffic delays did not correspond to traffic incidents reported in the area examined. These data were plotted geographically to aid in the determination of the new patrol area. The new patrol area was created around natural geographic boundaries, the density of calls for service and police operational experience.

Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller
Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller
McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium
People think the election of Obama led to post racial America. Our research seeks to understand how collective memory of generations affects political understandings of the election of President Obama and President Trump. Using Bonilla-Silva’s lens of racism without racist and Berlant’s theory of cruel optimism we argue that post racial ideas are optimistic and hinder how individuals remember Americas racial past. Through interviewing Generation X and Millennials we find personal relationships factor into how individuals recall political events more than candidate stances. Decoupling politics from person creates a phenomenon where individuals assume voting does not have social implications.

Long-Term Research On Red Soil Degradation And Remediation Promotes Development Of Ecological Recycling Agriculture In Hilly Region Of Southeast China, Sun Bo, Liang Yin, Xu Renkou, Peng Xinhua, Wang Xingxiang, Zhou Jing, Li Zhongpei, Zhao Xueqiang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The degradation problems of soil erosion, soil acidification, soil fertility attenuation, soil heavy metal pollution, and seasonal drought in the red soil hilly region of Southeast China have resulted in the degradation of the red soil ecosystem and the decline of the land productivity, which restricts the sustainable development of regional agriculture. Since the establishment of Yingtan Red Soil Ecological Experiment Station in 1985, the long-term observation and ecological basic research of red soil ecosystems have been carried out, the application research and demonstration have been implemented on soil degradation and restoration, soil quality evolution and improvement, nutrient cycling and …
Mechanisms Of Abrupt Extreme Precipitation Change Over The Northeastern United States, Huanping Huang, Jonathan M. Winter, Erich C. Osterberg
Mechanisms Of Abrupt Extreme Precipitation Change Over The Northeastern United States, Huanping Huang, Jonathan M. Winter, Erich C. Osterberg
Dartmouth Scholarship
In 1996, the northeastern United States experienced an abrupt increase in extreme precipitation, but the causal mechanisms driving this increase remain poorly understood. We find that 89% of the 1996–2016 increase relative to 1979–1995 is explained by only 273 unique extreme events affecting >5 stations and occurring in the months of February, March, June, July, September, and October. We use daily weather maps to classify the 273 extreme precipitation events by meteorological cause (tropical cyclones, fronts, and extratropical cyclones) and use reanalysis data to determine large‐scale changes in the atmosphere and ocean associated with increased extreme precipitation for each classification. …

Vocabulary! Supporting Diverse Students’ Mastery Of The Vocabulary, Lissa Power-Defur
Summer Literacy Institute
Mastering vocabulary is challenging for second language learners, students with disabilities, and students who are at risk. Given the vast number of words students must master prior to graduation (over 100,000), it is impossible for teachers and specialists to teach students all the words they need to know. Hart and Risley’s landmark study of the language of children from diverse families informs us that all school personnel need to focus on vocabulary. The Virginia Department of Education’s analysis of students performance on the Standards of Learning indicates that weaknesses in vocabulary knowledge adversely effect student’s performance in the general curriculum …

Bat Hibernacula In Caves Of Southern Idaho: Implications For Monitoring And Management, Jericho C. Whiting, Bill Doering, Gary Wright, Devin K. Englestead, Justin A. Frye, Todd Stefanic
Western North American Naturalist
Bat populations are being impacted by many threats, including white-nose syndrome, wind energy development, and hibernaculum disturbance and modification. Understanding the use of caves as hibernacula by bats in the western United States is necessary for the conservation and management of these mammals and their habitat, as well as for monitoring the arrival of white-nose syndrome. We identified biologically important hibernacula from 304 winter surveys (1 November–31 March) in 64 caves from 1984 to 2016 in southern Idaho, USA. During surveys researchers counted 37,693 bats representing 6 species. Townsend’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii townsendii) comprised 96.1% (36,237 individuals …
The Forgotten Campaign: Newfoundland At Gallipoli, Tim Cook, Mark Osborne Humphries
The Forgotten Campaign: Newfoundland At Gallipoli, Tim Cook, Mark Osborne Humphries
Canadian Military History
Gallipoli has no place in the collective memory of most Canadians and even among Newfoundlanders, Gallipoli has not garnered as much attention as the ill-fated attack at Beaumont Hamel. Although largely forgotten, Newfoundland’s expedition to Gallipoli was an important moment in the island’s history, one that helped shape the wartime identity of Newfoundlanders. Like other British Dominions, Newfoundland was linked to the Empire’s world-wide war experience and shared in aspects of that collective imperial identity, although that identity was refracted through a local lens shaped by the island’s unique history. Gallipoli was a brutal baptism of fire which challenged and …
The Variable Expression Of Transitive Subject And Possesor In Wayuunaiki (Guajiro), Andres M. Sabogal
The Variable Expression Of Transitive Subject And Possesor In Wayuunaiki (Guajiro), Andres M. Sabogal
Linguistics ETDs
In Wayuunaiki, verbal affixes cross-reference clausal arguments in various ways. Most notably, there are two ways to express transitive subjects, and two ways to express possessors. Much like voice alternatives, the variable expression of subject and possessor impart different perspectives on a situation type, but unlike traditional voice categories, syntactic valence remains equal. This dissertation characterizes these constructions with a specific question in mind: what do these two cross-referencing alternations communicate and what influences their usage? To answer these questions, I consider the linguistic properties observed in the usage of these constructions in narratives (Jusayú 1986, 1994), and informal conversations. …

Examining The Association Between Massage Parlors And Neighborhood Crime, Jessica Huff, Danielle Wallace, Courtney Riggs, Charles M. Katz, David Choate
Examining The Association Between Massage Parlors And Neighborhood Crime, Jessica Huff, Danielle Wallace, Courtney Riggs, Charles M. Katz, David Choate
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Although massage parlors have been associated with illicit activities including prostitution, less is known about their association with neighborhood crime. Employing the Computer Automated Dispatch/Record Management System (CAD/RMS), online user review, licensing, Census, and zoning data, we examine the impact of massage parlors on crime in their surrounding neighborhoods. Using spatial autoregressive models, our results indicate the total number of massage parlors was associated with increased social disorder. The presence of illicit massage parlors in adjacent neighborhoods was associated with crime and physical disorder in the focal neighborhoods. This study has consequences for how police address crime associated with massage …
Between A Rock And A Hot Place: Economic Development And Climate Change Adaptation In Vietnam, Khanh Katherine Pham
Between A Rock And A Hot Place: Economic Development And Climate Change Adaptation In Vietnam, Khanh Katherine Pham
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores 1) the ways that three Vietnamese infrastructure development projects undermine their cities' climate change adaptation goals and 2) the political and economic forces driving these developments. In-depth interviews highlight four main perspectives of planners and decision makers, which explain why these infrastructure projects often undermine cities' climate resilience goals. I describe how the mainstream climate change adaptation planning approach, with its emphasis on participatory planning, good governance and green growth, implicitly reinforces the neoliberal growth model, even as it seeks to ameliorate the inequality and ecological destruction that such a growth model creates. My research reveals how …

Is Your Artificial Inelligence Guilty Of The Unauthorized Practice Of Law?, Thomas E. Spahn
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
As with other technological advances, artificial intelligence (AI) will dramatically affect law practice in coming years. Among other things, AI implicates several ethics issues with which our profession will have to wrestle. One basic question involves AI's essential nature. Is it the practice of law? If so, non-lawyers relying on AI to advise third parties may be committing the criminal unauthorized practice of law, and lawyers insufficiently involved in such a process may be guilty of assisting in such unauthorized practice of law (UPL).

Analyzing The Impact Of Incentive Programs On Retention Of Family Practice Providers In Rural Nebraska, Andrew J. Pedley
Analyzing The Impact Of Incentive Programs On Retention Of Family Practice Providers In Rural Nebraska, Andrew J. Pedley
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
Rural populations in Nebraska are generally older, less affluent and suffer from more chronic diseases than their urban counterparts. To address these disparities, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Office of Rural Health oversees incentive programs that compensate providers for costs associated with education in exchange for time worked in shortage areas. This report examines the impact that these incentive programs have on the retention of family medicine providers in Nebraska using survival analysis methodologies. The findings of this report indicate a positive correlation between participation in incentive programs and workforce retention of family medicine providers.

Data-Driven Development Of A Roadside Safety Marketing Campaign For Tree Removal – Phase I, Cody S. Stolle, Thomas Ammon, Chris M. Vargas, Ronald K. Faller, Karla A. Lechtenberg, Erin L. Urbank
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Since the 1970s, tree crashes have been one of the most common and deadly fixed-object fatal crash types, resulting in more than 3,000 fatal crashes and 3,500 fatalities each year. While fatal tree crashes could be prevented by removing trees adjacent to the roadway, an extensive national tree removal project would be unnecessary, cost-prohibitive, and would experience significant political resistance.
The Midwest Pooled Fund Program jointly funded a research study to develop marketing methods and approaches which would focus on tree removal, replacement, or relocation in the most critical areas. Researchers conducted an extensive background investigation into tree crashes, other …
Maturity In A Human World: A Philosophical Study, Thomas Meagher
Maturity In A Human World: A Philosophical Study, Thomas Meagher
Doctoral Dissertations
This work offers a philosophical examination of human maturity. Its argument is that maturity in a human world has an infinite structure because such maturity demands taking responsibility for the world. A world is a product of constitution: human beings produce the world, which is functionally the extent of meaningfulness; but while each human being constitutes the world, each human being also enters a world already constituted. Maturity thus demands taking responsibility not only for that which is brought about through one’s own agency but also that which precedes one’s agency. The structure of the world so understood is such …

Evaluating The Utility Of Object-Based Image Analysis For Ecological Monitoring Of Pinon-Juniper Mortality, Zachary C. Taraschi
Evaluating The Utility Of Object-Based Image Analysis For Ecological Monitoring Of Pinon-Juniper Mortality, Zachary C. Taraschi
Geography ETDs
Forested ecosystems in the American Southwest are experiencing change at an unprecedented rate, largely due to mortality events triggered by increased temperatures, drought, and insect infestations. Large-scale changes in the distributions of these ecosystems can potentially alter regional-scale carbon, water and energy dynamics. One biome in particular that has experienced increased mortality and altered forest composition over the past 30 years are Piñon-Juniper woodlands (Pinus edulis, Juniperus spp.) in the American Southwest. New fields of study, in particular, Remote Sensing, are applying and adapting traditional methods for ecological monitoring of these woodlands. Remote sensing offers the potential to synoptically …

Beyond The Management-Employee Dyad: Supply Chain Initiatives In Shipping, L Tang, S Bhattacharya
Plymouth Business School
This article examines supply chain health and safety initiatives in the oil shipping industry. In particular, it explores the triangular relationships between ship cargo clients, shipping company management and seafarers and reveals the inherent complexities and tensions involved. It shows that while managers capitalise on the supply chain pressure to squeeze more effort out of seafarers, seafarers tend to adhere to the corporate line colluding with managers to hide defects and falsify records. Nevertheless, seafarers occasionally use the supply chain leverage to their advantage by tactically exposing ship defects during ship inspections.
Future Melting Away: Water Stress As A Threat To Human Security In Bangladesh And The Role Of International Community, Farzana Afroz Chowdhury
Future Melting Away: Water Stress As A Threat To Human Security In Bangladesh And The Role Of International Community, Farzana Afroz Chowdhury
Theses and Dissertations
Bangladesh is considered as one of the frontline states in the global climate change; its policy agendas attempt to respond to the perceived security threats emanating from such changes. Water stress is one of the key problems the country is facing. Yet, links between glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, Bangladesh’s climate, growing water stress, and its implications for human security have seldom been studied. Drawing on the concepts of climate change, human security and water stress, the thesis examines the causes of Bangladesh’s freshwater crisis and its contribution to the human insecurity. Here in this study, the influence of …
Iterations Of One: The Shema As Polemic Trope In The Synoptic Gospels And Qur'an, Roberta Sabbath
Iterations Of One: The Shema As Polemic Trope In The Synoptic Gospels And Qur'an, Roberta Sabbath
English Faculty Research
A panel of scholars ostensibly addressed “Shema in the Synoptic Gospels” at the 2017 Boston meeting of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew. “Ostensibly” because while all the essays acknowledge the significance of the keystone of both Jewish theology and liturgy for the authors of the New Testament, every essay focused on something larger than the narrow announced topic. Each, following the lead of Dr. Roberta Sabbath of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, who describes the polemical nature of the Shema, notes how the statement of God's unity (whether or not followed by the Love and Tzitzit …

Utilitarian Skateboarding: Insight Into An Emergent Mode Of Mobility, Michael Joseph Harpool
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years research and planning efforts to enhance the conditions and opportunities for active transportation modes have increased significantly; however, these efforts have primarily focused on pedestrians and bicyclists. Skateboarding and other alternative modes of mobility remain an untapped potential for healthy and sustainable travel. This research addresses numerous knowledge gaps in the literature on utilitarian skateboarding under the larger umbrella of active transportation. Analysis of online survey results and semi-structured interviews with skateboarders in Portland, OR provides insight into the motivations and barriers of traveling by skateboard and the demographics and perceptions of skateboard commuters. Like bicyclists and …

Recessional Poverty And Segregation In Shelby County, Tennessee, Jennifer Jehan Marshall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Great Recession of 2007-2009 and minor recession in 2001-2002 caused increases in financial strife for which the United States is recovering over 10 years later. Memphis ranks high for poverty, yet few studies evaluate Shelby County, Tennessee for poverty and segregation. This project adds to spatial recessional research by investigating changes in poverty and segregation in the county. Through a tract-level analysis, I located poverty and segregation in Shelby County for 2000 and 2009. I hypothesize that Blacks and Hispanics are the poorest of all groups and experience the most residential segregation. Results from 2000 showed that Black and …
