Designed Cultural Adaptation And Delivery Quality In Rural Substance Use Prevention: An Effectiveness Trial For The Keepin’ It Real Curriculum, Michael L. Hecht, Youngju Shin, Jonathan Pettigrew, Michelle Miller-Day, Janice L. Krieger

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This study examined how cultural adaptation and delivery quality of the school-based intervention keepin’ it REAL (kiR) influenced adolescent substance use. The goal of the study was to compare the effectiveness of the multi-cultural, urban (non-adapted) kiR intervention, a re-grounded (adapted) rural version of the kiR intervention and control condition in a new, rural setting. A total of 39 middle schools in rural communities of two states in the USA were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (i.e., control, non-adapted urban kiR, and adapted rural kiR). Data included adolescent self-reported lifetime substance use and observers’ ratings of delivery quality …

The concept of governance is widely employed in various field of studies. Governance also commonly employed to characterize institutions both in public sector institutions and private domains, describe both formal and informal organizations, and define both international and local networks. In the field of public administration, the concept of governance has been explored in last three decades. The usage of the word of governance could be in diverse ways and has various meanings which seems that governance is tend to be applied as rhetorical reasons rather than theoretical argumentations. This review article provides two philosophical approaches to understand governance concept …

The rapid shrinkage of Lake Urmia, one of the world's largest saline lakes located in northwestern Iran, is a tragic wake-up call to revisit the principles of water resources management based on the socio-economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The overarching goal of this paper is to set a framework for deriving dynamic, climate-informed environmental inflows for drying lakes considering both meteorological/climatic and anthropogenic conditions. We report on the compounding effects of meteorological drought and unsustainable water resource management that contributed to Lake Urmia's contemporary environmental catastrophe. Using rich datasets of hydrologic attributes, water demands and withdrawals, as well …

Genomic Variation Of Introduced Salvinia Minima In Southeastern United States, Carol A. Rowe, Donald P. Hauber, Paul G. Wolf

Ecology Center Publications

Common salvinia, Salvinia minima Baker (Salviniaceae), is a small, floating aquatic fern native to Central and South America that has invaded fresh water bodies in southeastern United States since the 1930s. We examined genetic variation across much of the introduced range of this species in the United States using codominant RAD-seq markers. Data from over 600 variable loci showed a reduction in heterozygosity from east to west in addition to a corresponding trend in assignment of samples to one of two genetic groups. Our data are consistent with previous published work and with the hypothesis that common salvinia had a …

Internalising Internationalisation: Views Of Internationalisation Of The Curriculum Among Non-Mobile Home Students, T Heffernan, D Morrison, P Magne, S Payne, Dre Cotton

More Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Research

There is considerable literature on internationalising the curriculum in higher education, but relatively little of this focuses on developing international perspectives in home-based students. In particular, there has been limited direct engagement with student views and understandings, especially comparatively across a wide range of subjects. To address this gap, we surveyed 495 first-year students in nine subjects across four faculties at a UK university, asking about their views on internationalisation. We also examined an apparent bias in the literature towards Business subject case studies. We found some support for generic approaches to teaching internationalisation for home students, but a more …

Changing Health Care Policy By Utilizing Kingdon's Policy Stream Theory, Brittney Welch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to describe the policy process of changing current regulations regarding rural health clinics (RHCs). Using Kingdon’s Policy Stream Theory for guidance, the change project was designed to amend current regulations regarding the directorship of the RHCs, consequently allowing Nurse Practitioners (NP) to act as medical directors for rural health clinics (RHCs). This change fulfills the Institute of Medicine’s charge to have nurses work to the highest level of their education, as well as a defined need to fill a gap in the health care system by decreasing rural health disparities. The Rural Health Care …

White Space, Black Space: Community Gardens In Portland, Oregon, David Ross Billings Jr. Jul 2018

White Space, Black Space: Community Gardens In Portland, Oregon, David Ross Billings Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

Community gardens have been the focus of social science research in the United States for several decades and the benefits associated with these alternative food spaces has been well documented. More recently, scholars have begun to argue that these benefits are inequitably distributed across society. Largely as a result of the whiteness of these spaces, people of color are less represented in community and benefit less from their presence. Portland, Oregon is recognized as a leader in sustainability, with its abundance of community gardens and urban agriculture. It is also one of the whitest urban cities in the United States. …

Diverse Lignocellulosic Feedstocks Can Achieve High Field‐Scale Ethanol Yields While Providing Flexibility For The Biorefinery And Landscape‐Level Environmental Benefits, Yaoping Zhang, Lawrence G. Oates, Jose Serate, Dan Xie, Edward Pohlman, Yury Bukhman, Rebecca Garlock Ong, Et Al.

Department of Chemical Engineering Publications

Increasing the diversity of lignocellulosic feedstocks accepted by a regional biorefinery has the potential to improve the environmental footprint of the facility; harvest, storage, and transportation logistics; and biorefinery economics. However, feedstocks can vary widely in terms of their biomass yields and quality characteristics (chemical composition, moisture content, etc.). To investigate how the diversity of potential biofuel cropping systems and feedstock supply might affect process and field‐scale ethanol yields, we processed and experimentally quantified ethanol production from five different herbaceous feedstocks: two annuals (corn stover and energy sorghum) and three perennials (switchgrass, miscanthus, and mixed prairie). The feedstocks werepretreated using ammonia …

(First paragraph) One of the central analytical insights of Michel Foucault's enormously influential political philosophy is that power is not unitary. Power does not always take the same form. Power has long been assumed to issue simply in the sovereign power's mandating tactics of prohibition and permission. Foucault argued that, in addition to sovereign power, there also exists a disciplinary power of normalization and a biopower of regulation, each of which operates through techniques that are irreducible to classical sovereign strategies of unimpeachable authority, military violence, and legal mandate.

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever continue to significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Disease burden is higher in low-and middle-income settings where surveillance programs are rare and little systematic information exists at population level. This review evaluates national, regional, and global trends in the incidence of typhoid fever and of related morbidity and mortality. A literature search in Medline, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted in June 2016, followed by screening and data extraction in duplicate. Studies reporting blood culture estimates of typhoid or paratyphoid morbidity and mortality were included in the analysis. Five thousand five hundred sixty-three unique …

We Have Seen It All. At The Mall, Carla Corroto Jul 2018

We Have Seen It All. At The Mall, Carla Corroto

Sociology Faculty Scholarship

Many of us have conflicted attitudes toward suburban shopping malls in the United States. Malls are environmentally irresponsible, reinforce a dependence on cars, fortify economic and social stratification, generate private-property, emphasize consumption, and are architecturally disappointing. Malls are also the places where we bought school shoes, where we garnered our first jobs, where we may see a diversity of products and people and tastes, and, remarkably, malls can still surprise us. This article is an overview of mall criticism and a narrative from reluctant mall enthusiasts. We sit at an equivocal place—in between the complexity and contradiction of the suburban …

Residential Zoning And Near-Roadway Air Pollution: An Analysis Of Los Angeles, C. J. Gabbe

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Air pollution from motor vehicles harms the health of those who live near freeways and other high-traffic roads. Land use regulations may permit, prohibit, or impose special conditions on housing near major roadways. This paper answers two questions: First, how is residential development near major roadways regulated? Second, how common are zoning changes near major roadways, and what factors explain these changes? This paper compares the zoning designations of near-roadway parcels with others in the city, and uses two sets of logistic regression models to analyze near-roadway zoning. The results show that residential development is permitted on most near-roadway parcels, …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Abstract Water availability is a major factor constraining humanity’s ability to meet the future food and energy needs of a growing and increasingly affluent human population. Water plays an important role in the production of energy, including renewable energy sources and the extraction of unconventional fossil fuels that are expected to become important players in future energy security. The emergent competition for water between the food and energy systems is increasingly recognized in the concept of the “food-energy-water nexus.” The nexus between food and water is made even more complex by the globalization of agriculture and rapid growth in food …

Findings suggest that there is much of potential benefit to refugee children and young people's future …

Paving The Sustainability Journey: Flexible Packaging Between Circular Economy And Resource Efficiency, Michelle Marrone, Stefano Tamarindo Jul 2018

Paving The Sustainability Journey: Flexible Packaging Between Circular Economy And Resource Efficiency, Michelle Marrone, Stefano Tamarindo

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely, therefore not hindering the future in any way, neither environmental, nor economic or social. The entire scientific community around the world recognizes and attributes the main cause of climate change and temperature anomaly to the significant increase of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, which in turn are the result of a linear economy of production, consumption and disposal. By 2030 the EU expects all packaging to be either recyclable or reusable. In this context, flexible packaging, always hailed as a sustainable and resource-efficient alternative to rigid packaging, is now being challenged, in …

Harmonizing Cultural Ip Across Borders: Fashionable Bags & Ghanaian Adinkra Symbols, J. Janewa Osei-Tutu

Akron Law Review

Global copyright and trademark laws protect symbols, names, and literary and artistic works. However, when their primary significance is cultural, because they are neither individual original works nor symbols that are used as commercial identifiers, intellectual property laws do not protect these symbols or artistic works. This is true, even if these goods are protected under national laws as part of that nation’s cultural heritage. Once these cultural goods cross borders, there is no international law that will enable the country from which these goods originate to assert its rights in other countries. This Article characterizes these cultural goods as …

Mythcon 49 - On The Shoulders Of Giants, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

The Mythopoeic Society has launched into a series of 50th anniversaries: the founding of the Society in 2017, the conception and launch of our scholarly journal Mythlore in 2018, and the establishment of our Mythopoeic Conference in 2019. Our theme is suggested by the ways in which Inklings scholarship has built on such good foundations.

We will celebrate these foundations and fifty years of building "On the Shoulders of Giants" at Mythcon 49.

In the face of the biodiversity crisis, it is argued that we should prioritize species in order to capture high functional diversity (FD). Because species traits often reflect shared evolutionary history, many researchers have assumed that maximizing phylogenetic diversity (PD) should indirectly capture FD, a hypothesis that we name the “phylogenetic gambit”. Here, we empirically test this gambit using data on ecologically relevant traits from >15,000 vertebrate species. Specifically, we estimate a measure of surrogacy of PD for FD. We find that maximizing PD results in an average gain of 18% of FD relative to random choice. However, this average …

Knowledge that can be gained from acoustic data collection in tropical ecosystems is low‐hanging fruit. There is every reason to record and with every day, there are fewer excuses not to do it. In recent years, the cost of acoustic recorders has decreased substantially (some can be purchased for under US$50, e.g., Hill et al. 2018) and the technology needed to store and analyze acoustic data is continuously improving (e.g., Corrada Bravo et al. 2017, Xie et al. 2017).
