Conservation Of Aquatic Biodiversity In The Context Of Multiple-Use Management On National Forest System Lands, Brett B. Roper, James M. Capurso, Yvette Paroz, Michael K. Young Sep 2018

Conservation Of Aquatic Biodiversity In The Context Of Multiple-Use Management On National Forest System Lands, Brett B. Roper, James M. Capurso, Yvette Paroz, Michael K. Young

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS) manages 193 million acres of public lands across 43 states and Puerto Rico. The original intent behind reserving lands managed by the USFS was to improve and protect forests, secure favorable conditions for water flows, and furnish a continuous supply of timber for the nation. Through time national forests have evolved, so they are managed for a broad array of uses. Differing expectations have led to conflicts between aquatic conservation and other aspects of the USFS’ mandate. In the 1990s, these conflicting goals came to a head with the listing of the …

Sexuality And Gender: Linked Through Theory, Neil Amos Sep 2018

Sexuality And Gender: Linked Through Theory, Neil Amos

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This essay is an examination of queer theory in the context of the perceived systems of domination over women and homosexuals. It is an attempt to ex-plain these systems using existing theoretical parameters, those of queer theory, as defined by Annmarie Jagose. The relevance and application of the theory is debated, and the systems are analyzed for the purposes of identifying aspects which queer theory can be applied to. Finally, the usefulness of queer theory to overall social science studies is examined, with the conclusion that queer theory is worthy of study, but very difficult to institute in an attempt …

Doctoral Education And The Academic Job Market In Planning: 2017-2018, Joanna Ganning

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This report presents a two-part analysis of Planning PhD programs and the Planning academy job market during the 2017-2018 academic year. The study was motivated by two descriptive research questions:

1. What does the Planning academy job market look like, and how much does it change from year to year?

2. Approximately how many PhDs graduate each year and where do they go?

Through the spring and summer of 2018, PhD program directors/coordinators (or other relevant members if a coordinator could not be identified or reached) were surveyed in 63 academic departments throughout the United States. Respondents provided information about …

Evidence For Subsurface Origin Of Boulder Caves, Roofed Slots And Boulder-Filled Canyons (Broumov Highland, Czechia), Filip Duszyński, Kacper Jancewicz, Piotr Migoń Sep 2018

Evidence For Subsurface Origin Of Boulder Caves, Roofed Slots And Boulder-Filled Canyons (Broumov Highland, Czechia), Filip Duszyński, Kacper Jancewicz, Piotr Migoń

International Journal of Speleology

The backslope of a sandstone cuesta in the Broumov Highland (Czechia) is cut by a complex network of canyons. Long sections of canyons have thick boulder fills which are difficult to reconcile with simple rock fall and talus development scenario. Boulder caves occur within these fills and their lowermost parts are drained by streams that evacuate fine loose sandy material produced by weathering and mechanical erosion. These boulder fills are explained as largely in situ, residual features, left after subsurface selective disintegration of rock mass, mainly joint-guided, and removal of grains by underground water. Evacuation of fines leaves voids …

A Christian Response To Boko Haram Insurgency In Nigeria, Gwamna Dogara Je'adayibe Sep 2018

A Christian Response To Boko Haram Insurgency In Nigeria, Gwamna Dogara Je'adayibe

The WATS Journal: An Online Journal from West Africa Theological Seminary

Nigeria, particularly the north-eastern region, has been the target of a sustained Islamist terrorist onslaught for many years, leading to massive human causalities, the loss of property, and destabilisation of socio-economic, religious and cultural processes. A major target of these attacks have been Christians and churches. This paper attempts to address some of these disturbing trends with specific focus on the Boko Haram Islamic insurgency group, which has attracted scholarly discourse since its formation, growth and spread. Diverse views have emerged as to its etymology, intentions, factors for their emergence, and source of growth and sponsors. This paper examines the …

Technology And Sustainable Development, Matthew Goodlaw Sep 2018

Technology And Sustainable Development, Matthew Goodlaw

Culture, Society, and Praxis

How is technology effecting sustainable development? To answer this question, Goodlaw takes a step back into history to establish a context, and define what technology is and to give an idea of what the general effects of technology are. The essay offers basic definitions to frame the discussion on sustainable development and provides examples of how specific technologies are affecting specific areas of sustainable development.

Using A Polygraph System For Evaluation Of The Social Desirability Response Bias In Self-Report Measures Of Aggression, Dmitri Poltavski, Richard Van Eck, Austin T. Winger, Charles Honts Sep 2018

Using A Polygraph System For Evaluation Of The Social Desirability Response Bias In Self-Report Measures Of Aggression, Dmitri Poltavski, Richard Van Eck, Austin T. Winger, Charles Honts

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Empirical evidence suggests that respondents systematically overreport socially desirable behaviors and systematically underreport socially undesirable behaviors. This “social desirability response bias (SDRB)” presents significant challenges for research that relies on self-report measures to assess behaviors that adhere to or violate social norms. The present study used a state-of-the-art polygraph system to examine SDRB in widely used aggression questionnaires, including the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire-Short Form, the Indirect Aggression subscale of the Aggression Questionnaire by Western Psychological Services, and the Reactive–Proactive Questionnaire. Sixteen college students with no criminal record, no known prior history of aggressive behavior, and no reported drug abuse, responded …

Higher Education In The Era Of Illusions: Neoliberal Narratives, Capitalistic Realities, And The Need For Critical Praxis, Ali H. Hachem Sep 2018

Higher Education In The Era Of Illusions: Neoliberal Narratives, Capitalistic Realities, And The Need For Critical Praxis, Ali H. Hachem

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

The modern American university is in transition, undergoing major changes to its very structure and function. While few of these changes are reflective of the rhetorical language of economic freedom, liberty, choice, and rights used in promoting the neoliberal state project, many others are clear indications of the re-coronation of a capitalistic oligarchy and the reinstatement of its class supremacy through the exploitation of society. While most of the critical literature in higher education attends to the structural macroscopic effects of the new capitalism, it is the argument in this article that more attention should be paid to the subjective …

Identification And Characterization Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Associated With Kudzu Root Nodules, Chasity Lawless, Michelle Zedonek, Debbie Curtis, Jonda Scharringhausen, Jared Bryant, Wendy A. Dustman, Alexandra M. Kurtz, Bekah Ward Dr. Sep 2018

Identification And Characterization Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Associated With Kudzu Root Nodules, Chasity Lawless, Michelle Zedonek, Debbie Curtis, Jonda Scharringhausen, Jared Bryant, Wendy A. Dustman, Alexandra M. Kurtz, Bekah Ward Dr.

Georgia Journal of Science

Pueraria montana, better known as kudzu, is an invasive species rapidly spreading throughout the southeastern United States. This plant can form root nodules which house nitrogen-fixing bacteria, allowing atmospheric nitrogen to be converted into biologically available forms of nitrogen for use by the plant host. Given the centrality of these bacteria to the spread of kudzu, isolates from nodules were characterized after collection from seven different locations across the metropolitan Atlanta area. Twenty-five isolates were grown on two different variants of nitrogen free media. Four different carbon sources were evaluated as well. Finally, growth under both aerobic and anaerobic …

Methodology To Adapt And Update A Life Cycle Cost Calculator For Your Institution: A Step-By-Step Guide, Breanna J. Parker, Alexander R. Barron Sep 2018

Methodology To Adapt And Update A Life Cycle Cost Calculator For Your Institution: A Step-By-Step Guide, Breanna J. Parker, Alexander R. Barron

Year on Climate Change: Other Materials

This guide provides a methodology for adapting a life cycle cost (LCC) calculator to your institution. An LCC calculator can be used to examine the present and future costs of any expenditure and can include a proxy carbon price in its analysis. Adapting an existing tool saves time and resources when compared to building from scratch. It also provides the most accurate information by accounting for specifics of context, such as energy costs and the greenhouse gas emission rates of energy sources, which vary by region.

This guide outlines a five-step process for adapting an LCC calculator to match your …

Working Families’ Access To Early Childhood Education, Jess Carson Sep 2018

Working Families’ Access To Early Childhood Education, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, using data from the Census Bureau, state administrative systems, and a Carsey survey of working parents, author Jessica Carson examines the child care landscape of the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont and links these findings to a discussion of early childhood education policy and practice. She reports that 96 percent of Upper Valley parents surveyed said child care is necessary in order for them to work. The number of slots offered by licensed (home- and center-based) early childhood education providers in the Upper Valley is 2,000 short of the estimated number of young children whose …

Design Microconference, P Davis

School of Art, Design and Architecture

A mirco conference organised my myself and Richard Herriott at Kodling Design School Denmark: the conference discussed: Do designers still believe in the design aesthetic? "1. Designers do not possess the scientific tools to study such questions 2. Designers are not interested in studying such questions (lest an algorithm or a layman become competent enough to take their job) 3. Designers have the intuitive ability to understand form and hence do not need to study it. 4. Designers/researchers may have come to the conclusion that such a study is hopeless because of the so many aspects of form and the …

Determining The Dynamics Of Coarse Bedload Transport Using Passive Indirect Monitoring: Time-Dependent Variability At Event To Inter-Annual Scales, Pw Downs, Pj Soar Sep 2018

Determining The Dynamics Of Coarse Bedload Transport Using Passive Indirect Monitoring: Time-Dependent Variability At Event To Inter-Annual Scales, Pw Downs, Pj Soar

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018. The dynamics of coarse bedload transport in rivers is governed by multiple hierarchical factors including catchment-scale controls on sediment production, annually variable hydroclimatic driving of segment-scale sediment supply, and reach-scale factors related to the interaction of hydraulic forces with channel morphology. Exploring hydroclimatic drivers can beneficially utilise passive sensors to record coarse bedload transport over extended time periods and in previously unattainable resolution. For the River Avon (Devon, UK), five-minute coarse bedload frequency data collected using seismic impact plates inherently records the instantaneous variability of bedload transport intensity, patterns of event-scale hysteresis …

Learning, Teaching & Practising Systemic Advocacy In Legal Clinics: A Conversation, Amanda Dodge, Gemma Smyth Sep 2018

Learning, Teaching & Practising Systemic Advocacy In Legal Clinics: A Conversation, Amanda Dodge, Gemma Smyth

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Clinical programs have incorporated systemic advocacy in various ways for decades; indeed, for many clinics systemic advocacy is a philosophical and practical imperative. For those legal clinics with students working, taking credit, or volunteering, incorporating meaningful systemic advocacy programming brings with it a host of challenges. This article, framed as a conversation between two women involved with clinical legal education in Windsor, Ontario and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was born out of the practical frustrations and joys of this work. The article illuminates the theoretical, pedagogical, and administrative challenges of meaningfully incorporating students into the day-to-day realities of systemic advocacy. Although the …

From Social Marketing To Societal Perversion: History Of Hometown Tax In Japan, Yuichiro Hidaka, Kosuke Mizukoshi Sep 2018

From Social Marketing To Societal Perversion: History Of Hometown Tax In Japan, Yuichiro Hidaka, Kosuke Mizukoshi

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This paper considers social marketing from a critical perspective. The paper traces the history of the donation system named ‘hometown tax’ that the Japanese government introduced to promote local revitalization of relatively marginal communities. Owing to the lavish reciprocal gifts to “donors” by the administrators of these communities, the system resulted in a quasi-market that allowed donors to avoid paying taxes and to receive special benefits. Our analysis reveals the divergence of the intents and effects of this social marketing intervention. The findings indicate that during social marketing attempts to carry out effective and well-intentioned interventions, which social marketing research …

Law, Metaphor, And The Encrypted Machine, Lex Gill Sep 2018

Law, Metaphor, And The Encrypted Machine, Lex Gill

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The metaphors we use to imagine, describe, and regulate new technologies have profound legal implications. This article offers a critical examination of the metaphors we choose to describe encryption technology and aims to uncover some of the normative and legal implications of those choices. The article begins with a basic technical backgrounder and reviews the main legal and policy problems raised by strong encryption. Then it explores the relationship between metaphor and the law, demonstrating that legal metaphor may be particularly determinative wherever the law seeks to integrate novel technologies into old legal frameworks. The article establishes a loose framework …

Homeless Individuals’ Social Construction Of A Park: A Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, Reuben Addo Sep 2018

Homeless Individuals’ Social Construction Of A Park: A Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, Reuben Addo

The Qualitative Report

Individuals experiencing homelessness and housed residents have increasingly been in conflict over the use of public spaces, which has led to efforts to regulate how individuals experiencing homelessness use public spaces. However, the discourses around the use of public parks seem to value housed residents over homeless individuals. How individuals experiencing homelessness construct meanings of public spaces has not been given adequate attention in the literature. Drawing on a symbolic interactionist theoretical framework and grounded theory methodology, the researcher conducted 10 semi-structured interviews on how individuals experiencing homelessness construct meanings of a public park. Participants ascribed instrumental and intangible meanings …

Student Reflections On Position And Experiences In The Doctors Of Tomorrow Program, Gurjit Sandhu, Emily N. Flagler, Kaustubh Prabhu, Paula T. Ross

The Qualitative Report

Racial diversity in the medical field remains elusive. Actively engaging high school students from communities underrepresented in medicine (URiM) through pipeline programs has been identified as a viable strategy to support diversification of the U.S. physician population. However, students’ perspectives toward these programs remains unclear. In this study, we aim to elicit insights of URiM students matriculating to postsecondary education who participated in the Doctors of Tomorrow (DoT) program to better understand their experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 of the 17 high school students from the inaugural year of DoT. We explored URiM students’ experiences during DoT involvement, …
