A Sub-Millennial Sediment Record Of Ice-Stream Retreat And Meltwater Storage In The Baltic Ice Lake During The Bølling-Allerød Interstadial, April Lynn Kelly, Sandra Passchier
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The rapid retreat of the Baltic Ice Stream and the development of the Baltic Ice Lake is assessed using data from sediment cores retrieved from three sub-basins in the southern Baltic Sea. Hydraulic piston coring by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) recovered for the first time intact glacial lake sequences overlying diamictons and other ice-contact deposits at Sites M0063, M0064 and M0065. Based on the particle size and bulk sediment chemical composition the glacial lake sediments were subdivided into a proximal and a distal varve sequence. The origin of a dark, lithologically distinct horizon between the proximal and distal …

Dealing With Climate Change Under The National Environmental Policy Act, Climate Change--Laws Regulations And Rules, Environmental Impact Statements, Greenhouse Gases, Arnold W. Reitze Jr.
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
The National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) was an important environmental law for several decades before climate change became an issue of concern. In the 1990s, efforts began to include in NEPA’s environmental assessments and environmental impact statements both the impact of federal government actions on climate change and the impact of climate change on proposed federal actions. These efforts were encouraged by the Council on Environmental Quality (“CEQ”). However, implementation at the agency level has since been uneven. Some federal agencies have resisted making serious efforts to incorporate climate change impacts into their decision-making process. Moreover, the courts have not …

Umn Morris Students Give Back To Minnesota’S Small Towns, Communications And Marketing
Campus News Archive
The University of Minnesota Morris Center for Small Towns (CST) works with communities across Minnesota to provide local solutions to real challenges. As a entrypoint to the University, CST gives small towns access to the talent and resources and gives students chances to apply skills they learn in the classroom, to strengthen their connection to greater Minnesota, and to develop as professionals. This fall CST is connecting 28 students with 25 projects that impact Minnesotans all over the state.

Scripps's Murrelet At San Miguel Island, California: Status Of A Small Population At The Northwest Limit Of The Breeding Range, Darrell L. Whitworth, Harry R. Carter
Western North American Naturalist
San Miguel Island (SMI) and its adjacent islets, Prince Island and Castle Rock, support a small population of Scripps’s Murrelets (Synthliboramphus scrippsi) at the northwest limit of their breeding range. In 1994–1996, 2004, 2007, and 2015, we conducted at-sea surveys and nest searches to determine the breeding distribution and population size of the Scripps’s Murrelet at the SMI group. During at-sea vocal surveys in 1994–1996, murrelet calls were heard at 4 stations around Prince Island (43–167 calls), 2 stations off Castle Rock (6 calls and 80 calls), and 4 stations off northeast SMI (5–123 calls), but none were …

The Last Oil: Students Respond, Unm Department Of Art
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
In February 2018, the University of New Mexico (UNM) convened the last oil: a multispecies justice symposium on Arctic Alaska and beyond.Twenty-nine artists, activists, attorneys, scientists, conservationists, curators, scholars, and writers from across the United States and Canada, gave talks and/or did creative performances—and ten colleagues from UNM and beyond chaired various sessions. the last oil was the first national convening to apprehend the reckless U.S. federal Arctic policy, and also brought impacts of climate change and Indigenous rights concerns in Alaska into conversation with similar impacts and struggles in New Mexico and the west.

Achieving Sdg Targets: The European Approach: Compliance - The Case Of Energy & Irish Universities, Dr. Mary Whitney, Andy Maguire
Achieving Sdg Targets: The European Approach: Compliance - The Case Of Energy & Irish Universities, Dr. Mary Whitney, Andy Maguire
Conference papers
Ireland, as a nation, has signed up to the SDGs. The main drivers in reaching these targets will be through a set of interventions that are encompassing
- legislation
- compliance to higher regulations
- incentives
- dissemination of effective best practice
When all put together it is a large and complex tapestry of actions.
The presentation takes Energy as an example. It outlines how the targets have been set nationally to achieve Ireland's internationally agreed targets. The resulting approach is highlighted, filtering down to what specific steps are taking place in the public sector. The resulting actions that are …
On Biospeleothems From A Venezuelan Tepui Cave: U-Th Dating, Growth Rates, And Morphology, Joyce Lundberg, Charles Brewer-Carías, Donald A. Mcfarlane
On Biospeleothems From A Venezuelan Tepui Cave: U-Th Dating, Growth Rates, And Morphology, Joyce Lundberg, Charles Brewer-Carías, Donald A. Mcfarlane
International Journal of Speleology
Seven silica biospeleothems from Cueva Charles Brewer, Chimantá Plateau, Venezuela have been successfully U-Th dated despite very low U and high detrital Th concentrations. Growth rates are low, between ~100 to ~800 µm/ka, and are greater closer to water level. Dates in unaltered material are in good stratigraphic order, but secondary silicification may compromise the U-Th system, yielding unreliable sequences of ages. Detritally-enriched layers correlate with global climate cycles of the Late Quaternary, in particular the cooler, drier phases of MIS 5d, 5a, and 4. SEM studies indicate that the peloidal material is made up of silica nano-particles assembled to …

The Plastic Problem: Plastic Pollution In Bali, Kate Giesler
The Plastic Problem: Plastic Pollution In Bali, Kate Giesler
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
With the fourth highest population and an ever-growing rate of plastic consumption, Indonesia is the second largest plastic polluter in the world (McCarthy, 2018). The country, which has only had plastic since the latter half of the 20th century, has staggeringly high rates of plastic waste which becomes pollution due to various factors. This paper examines the factors that go into why the rates of plastic pollution are so high, what people know about it and what is being done to help combat the problem. The four main topics explored are: laws, disposal methods, education and tourism. The study uses …

Academic Job Tips By Costanza Rampini - Phone Interview, Costanza Rampini
Academic Job Tips By Costanza Rampini - Phone Interview, Costanza Rampini
Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies
If you are on the academic job market, particularly in the fields of environmental studies/geography, I would be happy to share tips and questions from phone and on-campus interviews. I realize that Ph.D. advisors should provide this type of coaching, but they don't always do it...and some haven't been on the job market for a long time. It helps to speak to someone who just went through it...and has fresh notes from it! I was so much more prepared and had much more articulated answers by the time I had my 8th phone interview as compared to my first. Some …
