Ecofeminism And Cultural Ecology: A Framework Of Connections And Intersections For Reading Margret Atwood’S “Habitation”, “The City Planners”, “Morning In The Burned House”, “February”, And “ Night Poem”, Maha M. Munib Abdelmotaleb Nov 2018

Ecofeminism And Cultural Ecology: A Framework Of Connections And Intersections For Reading Margret Atwood’S “Habitation”, “The City Planners”, “Morning In The Burned House”, “February”, And “ Night Poem”, Maha M. Munib Abdelmotaleb

English Language and Literature

Cultural ecology and Ecofeminism are two concepts that intersect with each other. Both concepts define and reinforce each other. It could be claimed that, Ecofeminism is one manifestation of cultural ecology since the former tackles issues about feminism’s relationship with nature including nature domination and the duality of nature which find their echoes in cultural ecology as well. The whole idea of the earth’s subjugation and male domination as well as the male/ female duality of nature in general find resonance in feminist resistance to patriarchal domination which develop under the umbrella of Ecofeminism to be part of the struggle …

Identification And Characterisation Of Novel Phages Of Pectobacterium And Erwinia, Colin Buttimer

PhDs

Losses in crop yields due to disease need to be reduced to meet increasing global food demands associated with growth in the human population. There is a well-recognised need to develop new environmentally-friendly control strategies to combat bacterial crop diseases. There are several crop diseases for which no effective bactericidal agents are currently available, such as potato blackleg and soft rot disease caused by Pectobacterium atrosepticum and other members of soft rot Enterobacteriaceae (Czajkowski et al., 2011). Furthermore, current control measures involving the use of traditional chemicals or antibiotics are losing their efficacy due to the natural development of bacterial …

Landscapes Of Power: Politics Of Energy In The Navajo Nation, Sayd Randle Nov 2018

Landscapes Of Power: Politics Of Energy In The Navajo Nation, Sayd Randle

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Remote, extractive landscapes are often marked by persistent pollution, particularly when the extracted resource in question comes from underground and serves as a source of energy. The toxic legacies of fracking, mountaintop removal and more conventional mining projects are well documented at this point. The disproportionately polluted extractive ‘hinterland’ looms especially large in recent accounts of the rural West of the United States, which tend to emphasize the ways in which these ‘peripheries’ have enabled consumption and prosperity elsewhere (e.g. Kuletz 1998; Needham 2014; Voyles 2015). Dana Powell’s Landscapes of power (2018) moves swiftly beyond a recognition of such patterns …

Long-Term Monitoring Of Scripps's Murrelet And Guadalupe Murrelet At San Clemente Island, California: Evaluation Of Baseline Data In 2012–2016, Darrell L. Whitworth, Harold R. Carter, Michael W. Parker, Franklin Gress, Melissa Booker

Western North American Naturalist

San Clemente Island (SCI) supports one of the smallest Scripps’s Murrelet (Synthliboramphus scrippsi; SCMU) colonies in the world, and perhaps the only colony of Guadalupe Murrelets (S. hypoleucus; GUMU) in California. In 2012–2016, the U.S. Navy sponsored development of a long-term murrelet monitoring program at SCI that utilized nocturnal spotlight surveys, night-lighting at-sea captures, and nest monitoring. Standardized spotlight survey transects were established in nearshore waters off breeding areas at Seal Cove and southeast SCI (SESCI). Baseline mean spotlight counts were 29 ± 15 murrelets (n = 31) at Seal Cove in 2013–2016 and 21 ± 10 …

Dynamics Of The Community Resilience To Drought Hazard In The South-Central United States, Volodymyr Mihunov Oct 2018

Dynamics Of The Community Resilience To Drought Hazard In The South-Central United States, Volodymyr Mihunov

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Drought effects cross-cut meteorological, agricultural, hydrological, and socioeconomic systems and affect both natural and human communities. The drought hazard varies in time and space in its intensity and impact on human communities. An identification of the main variables that affect resilience is crucial to coping with the hazard and promoting resilience. The study applied the Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) framework to measure the resilience levels of the 503 counties of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. In the first assessment, through k-means cluster analysis, stepwise discriminant analysis (74.7 percent accuracy, 72.8 percent leave-one-out cross-validation accuracy), and regression analysis (adjusted …

Avian And Skunk Predation Of Ashy Storm-Petrels At Santa Cruz Island, California, William R. Mciver, Harold R. Carter, A. Laurie Harvey, David M. Mazurkiewicz, Jim A. Howard, Paige L. Martin, John W. Mason Oct 2018

Avian And Skunk Predation Of Ashy Storm-Petrels At Santa Cruz Island, California, William R. Mciver, Harold R. Carter, A. Laurie Harvey, David M. Mazurkiewicz, Jim A. Howard, Paige L. Martin, John W. Mason

Western North American Naturalist

Avian and mammalian predation of Ashy Storm-Petrels (Oceanodroma homochroa) were documented during monthly nest monitoring in 1995–1998 and 2005–2015 and once-per-year monitoring in 1999–2004 at 5 colonies at Santa Cruz Island, California. Throughout the study period, predation by Barn Owls (Tyto alba) was documented at the sea cave colonies, and at Orizaba Rock, and likely contributed to reduced breeding success at Bat Cave in 1995–1997. Recent predation by Common Ravens (Corvus corax) caused reduced breeding success each year in 2012–2015 at Orizaba Rock (35%–48%) and in 2013 and 2015 at Bat Cave (49%–52%). Raven …

The Praxis Of Deceleration: Recovery As "Inner Work, Public Act", Marisol Cortez Ph.D. Oct 2018

The Praxis Of Deceleration: Recovery As "Inner Work, Public Act", Marisol Cortez Ph.D.

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Originally published in Deceleration and presented at the 2017 meeting of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment, this short essay details the vision and praxis behind an online journal of environmental justice co-edited by the author alongside environmental journalist Gregory Harman. In this essay, I situate the evolution of this project in relation to our precarious institutional positions as writers with disabilities who consequently work in the spaces between academia, journalism, activism, and creative writing. This positionality has in turn placed Deceleration in conversation with degrowth and allied movements around the world, which challenge the disabling …

Long-Term Ecological Research And Experimental Demonstration Provide Theoretical And Technical Support For Adaptive Management Of Alpine Grassland, Cao Guangmin, Lin Li, Zhang Fawei, Li Yikang, Du Yangong, Guo Xiaowei, Li Qian, Qian Dawen, Fan Bo

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The traditional theory holds that the extreme climatic environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has created the potential for regional ecosystem sensitivity and vulnerability making it a worldwide problem of ecosystem management, maintenance, and restoration. Haibei Research Station of Alpine Meadow Ecosystem was established by the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Long-term monitoring of ecosystem component revealed the biological mechanism of alpine grassland response to climate change in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, explored the succession process of alpine grassland degradation under grazing disturbance, and clarified the biological mechanism of maintaining alpine grassland stability. The adaptive management …

Ohio Leed Schools And Academic Performance: A Panel Study, 2006–2016, Allen Prindle, Ryan P. Thombs

Business, Accounting and Economics Faculty Scholarship

This study investigates the effect that Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) had on academic performance using a difference-in-differences (DID) estimator using data from the years 2006–2016. By obtaining data from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, this investigation examines the effect that LEED design had on the Student Performance Index for schools that opened in the year 2012. Each LEED school was matched with a non-LEED school based on several criteria. The study determined that LEED did not have an impact on the Student Performance Index. Though we find no relationship, green schools …

The Usability Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Uavs) For Pedestrian Observation, Keunhyun Park, Reid Ewing Oct 2018

The Usability Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Uavs) For Pedestrian Observation, Keunhyun Park, Reid Ewing

Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications

The monitoring of pedestrian activity is challenging, primarily because its traffic levels are typically lower and more variable than those of motorized vehicles. Compared with other on-the-ground observation tools, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) could be suitable for counting and mapping pedestrians in a reliable and efficient way. Thus, this study establishes and tests a new method of pedestrian observation using UAVs. The results show that UAV observations demonstrate high levels of interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.99) and equivalence reliability (Cronbach’s α = .97 with on-the-ground counts and .73 with Google Street View). Practical implications of the new tool …

Status Of Ashy Storm-Petrel Breeding Colonies At Santa Cruz Island, California, 1912–1998, Harry R. Carter, William R. Mciver, Gerard J. Mcchesney, Darrell L. Whitworth, John R. Gilardi

Western North American Naturalist

We summarized historical knowledge from 1912 to 1998 of 13 known breeding colonies of Ashy Storm-Petrels (Oceanodroma homochroa) at Santa Cruz Island, California. Breeding was first reported by naturalists at Painted Cave (1912), Scorpion Rocks (1928), and Orizaba Rock (1937). During early seabird colony surveys of the Channel Islands, breeding was also noted at Cavern Point Cove Caves (1970), Diablo Rocks (1976), and Gull Island (1977). During 1991–1998, more extensive surveys of nearly all sea caves and offshore rocks documented additional breeding at Bat Cave, Cave of the Birds’ Eggs, Del Mar Cove Cave, Del Mar Rock, Dry …
