The Economic Value Of Climate Information In Adaptation Decisions: Learning In The Sea-Level Rise And Coastal Infrastructure Context, David A. Dawson, Alistair Hunt, Jon Shaw, W. Roland Gehrels Jan 2018

The Economic Value Of Climate Information In Adaptation Decisions: Learning In The Sea-Level Rise And Coastal Infrastructure Context, David A. Dawson, Alistair Hunt, Jon Shaw, W. Roland Gehrels

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2018 The Authors Traditional methods of investment appraisal have been criticized in the context of climate change adaptation. Economic assessment of adaptation options needs to explicitly incorporate the uncertainty of future climate conditions and should recognise that uncertainties may diminish over time as a result of improved understanding and learning. Real options analysis (ROA) is an appraisal tool developed to incorporate concepts of flexibility and learning that relies on probabilistic data to characterise uncertainties. It is also a relatively resource-intensive decision support tool. We test whether, and to what extent, learning can result from the use of successive generations …

Relationships Between Markers Of Inflammation And Muscle Mass, Strength And Function: Findings From The Hertfordshire Cohort Study, L. D. Westbury, N. R. Fuggle, H. E. Syddall, N. A. Duggal, S. C. Shaw, K. Maslin, E. M. Dennison, J. M. Lord, C. Cooper Jan 2018

We investigated the longitudinal relationships between inflammation markers and the following outcomes in a UK cohort study: appendicular lean mass (ALM); walking speed; level and change in grip strength; and sarcopenia defined by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Analyses were based on 336 community-dwelling older men and women (aged 59-70 years) who participated in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS). Inflammation markers were ascertained at baseline using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques and Bio-Plex Pro Assays. Grip strength was measured at baseline and follow-up [median follow-up time: 10.8 years (inter-quartile range 10.2-11.6)] and change in grip strength was …

Studies have shown that Raman spectroscopic analysis of fingernail clippings can help differentiate between post-menopausal women who have and who have not suffered a fracture. However, all studies to date have been retrospective in nature, comparing the proteins in nails sourced from women, post-fracture. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of a prospective test for hip fracture based on spectroscopic analysis of nail tissue. Archived toenail samples from post-menopausal women aged 50 to 63 years in the Nurses' Health Study were obtained and analysed by Raman spectroscopy. Nails were matched case-controls sourced from 161 women; 82 …

Caradura: Migration, Informal Labor, And The Problem Of Enacting Trust In A Spanish Enclave In Morocco, Brian Campbell Jan 2018

Caradura: Migration, Informal Labor, And The Problem Of Enacting Trust In A Spanish Enclave In Morocco, Brian Campbell

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

AbstractSome social scientists have argued that state legal institutions are not effective at protecting immigrants. Proper evaluation of ethnographic data, they argue, shows that migrants integrate themselves by forming strong, personal relationships of trust and friendship minimally grounded in discourses of ethnicity or kinship. They also transcend legal and cultural categories and assign roles other than those of the state. This article tests this model against the experience of migrants, refugees, and transfronterizos/as (cross‐border laborers) engaged in informal ties of confianza (trust) in Ceuta, a small Spanish enclave in Morocco. Workers claim that while ties of confianza can transform into …

Bridging The Divide: Social-Ecological Coherence In Marine Protected Area Network Design, Sian E. Rees, Simon J. Pittman, Nicola Foster, Olivia Langmead, Charly Griffiths, Steve Fletcher, David E. Johnson, Martin Attrill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

© 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and networks of MPAs are being implemented globally as a spatial management tool for achieving conservation objectives. There has been considerable progress in reaching the prescribed 10% protected area target for 2020, outlined in the Convention on Biological Diversity Aichi Target 11 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14. The application of MPA network design principles (e.g. Representative, ecological connectivity), which underpin ecological coherence, is still lacking or insufficient in many regions. Poor ecological coherence hinders the ecological performance of MPA networks, leading to dysfunction in the flow …

Johannine Christology Through The Lens Of Three Of Its Dialogues, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2018

Johannine Christology Through The Lens Of Three Of Its Dialogues, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

In comparison with the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the Gospel of John has a very different interpretive lens through which it answers the age-old question “Who is Jesus?” The Gospel itself identifies its purpose: “These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31). While many individuals in the Synoptic Gospels declare Jesus to be the Son of God, there are very few accounts of Jesus himself declaring so until the latter part of his ministry. In this respect, …

“Can’T Live With Or Without Them:” Transitions And Young Adults’ Perceptions Of Sibling Relationships, Alexander C. Jensen Phd, Shawn D. Whiteman, Karen L. Fingerman

Faculty Publications

Extant research documents how siblings’ relationships develop from childhood through adolescence; yet, we know little about how sibling relationships change in young adulthood. Rooted in life course theory, this 2-wave longitudinal study investigated changes in sibling closeness and conflict, and the roles of life transitions and sibling similarity in life stage. Participants included 273 young adults from 180 families who reported on 340 sibling relationships (Time 1 M age = 24.45, SD = 5.33; Time 2 M age = 30.23, SD = 5.33). Multilevel repeated measures analysis of covariance indicated that, on average, siblings’ perceptions of conflict declined over the …

Comparison Of Varying Heel To Toe Differences And Cushion To Barefoot Running In Novice Minimalist Runners, Danny Moody, Iain Hunter, Sarah T. Ridge, J. William Myrer Jan 2018

Comparison Of Varying Heel To Toe Differences And Cushion To Barefoot Running In Novice Minimalist Runners, Danny Moody, Iain Hunter, Sarah T. Ridge, J. William Myrer

There are many different types of footwear available for runners in today’s market. Many of these shoes claim to help runners run more efficiently by altering an individual’s stride mechanics. Minimalist footwear claims to aid runners run more on their forefeet whereas more traditional footwear provides more cushioning specifically for a heel first landing. The purpose of this paper was to determine if runners, who were accustomed to running in traditional footwear would alter their running mechanics while running acutely in various types of minimalist footwear. Twelve subjects, accustomed to running in traditional 12 mm heel/toe differential footwear, ran in …

Joint Religiosity And Married Couples’ Sexual Satisfaction, Jeffrey P. Dew, Jeremy E. Uecker, Brian J. Willoughby Jan 2018

Joint Religiosity And Married Couples’ Sexual Satisfaction, Jeffrey P. Dew, Jeremy E. Uecker, Brian J. Willoughby

Faculty Publications

Although many studies have examined the association between religion and sexuality, the majority of these studies have focused on non marital sex. Unfortunately, despite the fact that a satisfying sexual relationship plays a critical role in married couples' relationship quality and stability, the associations between religiosity and marital sexual satisfaction are not well understood. Thus, to examine the association between religiosity and couples' reports of married sexual satisfaction, the authors of this study used dyadic data from a nationally representative sample of married couples (N = 1,368) between the ages of 18 and 45. They used both joint and …

Prospective Subgroup Analyses Of The Randomized Mcl‐002 (Sprint) Study: Lenalidomide Versus Investigator's Choice In Relapsed Or Refractory Mantle Cell Lymphoma, L Arcaini, T Lamy, J Walewski, D Belada, Et Al Jan 2018

Prospective Subgroup Analyses Of The Randomized Mcl‐002 (Sprint) Study: Lenalidomide Versus Investigator's Choice In Relapsed Or Refractory Mantle Cell Lymphoma, L Arcaini, T Lamy, J Walewski, D Belada, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

In the mantle cell lymphoma (MCL)-002 study, lenalidomide demonstrated significantly improved median progression-free survival (PFS) compared with investigator's choice (IC) in patients with relapsed/refractory MCL. Here we present the long-term follow-up data and results of preplanned subgroup exploratory analyses from MCL-002 to evaluate the potential impact of demographic factors, baseline clinical characteristics and prior therapies on PFS. In MCL-002, patients with relapsed/refractory MCL were randomized 2:1 to receive lenalidomide (25 mg/day orally on days 1–21; 28-day cycles) or single-agent IC therapy (rituximab, gemcitabine, fludarabine, chlorambucil or cytarabine). The intent-to-treat population comprised 254 patients (lenalidomide, n = 170; IC, n = …

The Politics Of The Digital Single Market: Culture Vs. Competition Vs. Copyright, Simone Schroff, John Street Jan 2018

The Politics Of The Digital Single Market: Culture Vs. Competition Vs. Copyright, Simone Schroff, John Street

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper examines the implications for European music culture of the European Union’s (EU) Digital Single Market strategy. It focuses on the regulatory framework being created for the management of copyright policy, and in particular the role played by collective management organisations (CMOs or collecting societies). One of the many new opportunities created by digitalisation has been the music streaming services. These depend on consumers being able to access music wherever they are, but such a system runs counter to the management of rights on a national basis and through collecting organisations which act as monopolies within their own territories. …

Collective Action Clauses As A Solution To Holdouts In Puerto Rico’S Unique Debt Crisis: Lessons Learned From Argentina, Sumer B. Marquette Jan 2018

Collective Action Clauses As A Solution To Holdouts In Puerto Rico’S Unique Debt Crisis: Lessons Learned From Argentina, Sumer B. Marquette

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

On June 30, 2016, in a controversial and bipartisan effort, the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) was signed into law to address the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico’s fiscal crisis. At the time, Puerto Rico’s government and its agencies had $72 billion in debt. However, Puerto Rico’s status as a U.S. territory disqualified the island from filing for court-arranged bankruptcy under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and from seeking emergency assistance from the International Monetary Fund. As a result, PROMESA was enacted to create a structure for exercising federal oversight over the fiscal affairs of the territory by …

Is The Corporation An Enemy Of Democracy? How To Give The Corporation A Little Soul, Paul J. Zwier Jan 2018

Is The Corporation An Enemy Of Democracy? How To Give The Corporation A Little Soul, Paul J. Zwier

Emory Business Law Review

In his masterful book, GREAT TRANSFORMATION, Karl Polanyi theorized that laissez faire market capitalism had within it the eventual demise of democracy. He argued, in effect, that the myth free markets would magically most fairly distribute goods and services among is citizens would become a 'bad seed,' that would grow to choke out democratic decision-making. In other words, once citizens in a democracy lose jobs and pensions, and get pay cuts, and pay ever increasing prices for medical care, they start to see themselves as pawns in a rigged system justified by free market formulas that are hard to understand. …

Ours is the first study to directly measure the relative contribution of linguistic distance to the acquisition of a bilingual toddler's two languages, which was the aim of Study 1. To address this question we tested 372 24-month-olds learning British English and one of 13 target Additional Languages. We found that a higher phonological overlap between these Additional Languages and British English led to higher levels of Additional Language CDI vocabulary production. Similar effects in comprehension were found for our other measures of linguistic distance, namely degree of similar in morphological complexity and word order. Importantly, linguistic distance contributed unique …

The methods described in this chapter cover the cohort data collection, which constituted the common data set for all three studies reported in this paper. A sample of 430 bilingual toddlers, learning British English and one of 13 target Additional Languages (N = 372), or any other Additional Language (N = 58), were identified over a 2-year period. To increase variation in both English/Additional Language pairs and in the situational factors outlined above (language exposure, mode of exposure and demographic factors), data was collected through trained research assistants recruited in the six universities involved in this project (Bangor, Birmingham, Kent, …

To estimate the impact of linguistic distance on vocabulary development, which was the aim of Study 1, we needed to account for the effects of all situational factors that were known or suspected to shape bilingual development. This was achieved through a two-step analyses of the data from the 372 children whose Additional Language was one of our 13 target languages.

A Comparison Of The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test And The Wechsler Scales, Samantha Denhart Jan 2018

A Comparison Of The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test And The Wechsler Scales, Samantha Denhart

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to determine the correlation between a commonly used cognitive ability test (i.e., Wechsler) and a verbal memory test (i.e., Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test) by analyzing archival data from a clinical sample of adults. Many researchers have continued to establish the relationship between cognitive ability, or IQ, and learning and memory skills; however, there is little research regarding when differences between IQ and memory scores are statistically significant. Results of this study indicated 17 of 20 IQ index/memory correlations were statistically significant and a series of simple regressions generated standardized residuals. These residuals generated confidence bands …

Omnivore Density Affects Community Structure Through Multiple Trophic Cascades, Donald J. Benkendorf Jan 2018

Omnivore Density Affects Community Structure Through Multiple Trophic Cascades, Donald J. Benkendorf

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Omnivores can dampen trophic cascades by feeding at multiple trophic levels, yet few studies have evaluated how intraspecific variation influences the effect of omnivores on community structure. The Speckled Dace (Rhinichthys osculus) is an omnivorous cyprinid that consumes algae and invertebrates and is abundant throughout the western United States. I sought to identify the effects of size and size structure on top-down control by dace and learn how these effects scaled with density. Dace were manipulated in a mesocosm experiment and resulting changes in invertebrate and algal communities and measures of ecosystem function were monitored. Omnivores affected experimental …

Big-Box Stores And Urban Land Prices: Friend Or Foe?, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2018

Big-Box Stores And Urban Land Prices: Friend Or Foe?, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

This study examined the effect of a new Walmart store on nearby U.S. urban land prices and found that, within one quarter mile of a new Walmart store locale, land prices increased by almost 39% over the four-year development time period. Supercenters and commercial land sales were instrumental in driving the positive price effects. Robustness tests found a positive land price effect with other big-box stores, suggesting that the land price effect was not limited to Walmart stores, but in fact, was a big-box store effect.

What Is A Christian Teacher To Do With Louise Rosenblatt’S Transactional Theory Of Reading?, Andrew P. Huddleston, Dawan Coombs, Katlin Sehres, Ashley Miller

Faculty Publications

In this theoretical analysis, the authors explore the question, What is a Christian teacher educator to do with Louise Rosenblatt’s transactional theory of reading? They begin by outlining the primary components of Rosenblatt’s transactional theory, focusing on reading as a transaction and the efferent and aesthetic stances. Next, they discuss who they are as teacher educators and former students, how their faith backgrounds intersect with Rosenblatt’s work, and the approach they took to address areas of tension that they and other Christian educators have experienced with Rosenblatt’s theory. Finally, they conclude by discussing implications of Rosenblatt’s work for reading scripture, …
