Head Impact Monitoring: What New Methodologies Could Do For Concussion Biomechanics, Enora Le Flao, Patria Hume, Doug King
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Concussion has become a world-wide concern for sports participants. In-vivo head impacts monitoring has long been proposed as a way of identifying and even helping to prevent concussions. Several head impact devices were developed to measure head kinematics on the field, allowing the study of a wide range of sports. However, after fifteen years of data collection and despite a better understanding of injury mechanisms, concussion biomechanics still presents numerous challenges. This study aimed to summarize current knowledge of head impact monitoring via narrative and systematic reviews. The discussion was focused on how technology might have limited previous research, and …

Variability In The Step Characteristics Of International-Level Sprinters During The Acceleration Phase, Ross Tugwood, Neil Bezodis, Ian Bezodis, Paul Worsfold, Benke Blomkvist
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated within-session and across-season variability in step characteristics during maximal effort sprint accelerations of internationally competitive sprinters (n = 7) during training. Kinematic data were collected across multiple sessions over the training season. Of each adjacent four-step interval, steps 1-4 showed the highest absolute variation for step frequency, contact and flight time across the cohort, within-session. Across the season, the variability in each kinematic measure (relative to season mean) was specific to the individual, and no single technique variable fluctuated consistently with velocity. Athletes may benefit from being exposed to a variety of situational and environmental constraints that …

New Developments In Vector Coding Methods For Assessing Coordination Variability, Holly A. Stock, Laura-Anne M. Furlong, Cassie Wilson, Richard E.A. Van Emmerik, Ezio Preatoni
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study is to propose modifications to current methods for the assessment of coordination variability through vector coding techniques. Commonly, vector coding starts from calculating the vector difference between adjacent data points on an angle-angle plot. This initial stage is analogue to estimating angular velocities from displacement, but with the limitation of differentiating the three axial components in isolation. Instead, the calculation of angular velocities from 3D data should take into account movement in other planes of motion. This study suggests the use of angular velocities in vector coding in place of the difference calculations and demonstrates …
The Relationship Between Dry-Land Resistance Training And Start Performance In Competitive Swimming: A Brief Review, Shiqi Thng, Simon Pearson, Justin Keogh
The Relationship Between Dry-Land Resistance Training And Start Performance In Competitive Swimming: A Brief Review, Shiqi Thng, Simon Pearson, Justin Keogh
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to review the literature on the relationship between dry-land resistance training and swim start performance in competitive swimming. It is common practice in competitive swimming to use dry-land resistance training to increase muscular strength and power. Given the explosive nature of the swim start, it would appear that high levels of lower body muscular strength and power are necessary to enhance this component in swimming. Performance in total body jumping exercises shared a stronger relationship to start performance than single joint exercises. This may reflect the requirement for force and power to be developed …

Comparison Of Biomechanical Data Of A Sprint Cyclist In The Velodrome And In The Laboratory, Louise Burnie
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to develop a reliable testing method to measure biomechanical variables that describe sprint cycling performance on a velodrome track, compared to on an ergometer in a laboratory. Seven elite track sprint cyclists performed sprints on an isokinetic ergometer in a laboratory and over half lap distances in a velodrome. Key biomechanical variables characterising sprint cycling were measured. Relatively small differences in the variables were found between the ergometer and track sprints. However the static task constraints of ergometer cycling led the cyclists to adopt a different position which seemed to allow them to increase …

Ethical Development And Diversity Training For Educational Leaders, Ilene L. Ingram, Shannon Flumerfelt
School Leadership Review
In the 21st century schools must meet the challenges of current and anticipated increases in racial and ethnic student populations. In turn, school principals must be prepared to lead diverse student populations to high levels of achievement. To facilitate adequate leadership preparation, therefore, the diversity training of educational leaders in given settings must be reworked so that the achievement gap between non-white and white students can be closed. Furthermore, restructuring of principal training is best accomplished through consensus within the profession, based on the tenets of the democratic values of respect, acceptance, and appreciation of diversity.
The purpose of this …

Relationship Between Student Academic Achievement And Gender Of Campus Administrator, Pam Winn, Susan Erwin, Jim Gentry, Mary Cauble
School Leadership Review
Studies of the effectiveness of women’s leadership have been recommended by researchers for over three decades (e.g. Eckman, 2004; Edson, 1988; Schmuck, 1981; Shakeshaft, 1989). Burke & Nelson (2002) and Smulyan (2000) have suggested that a woman’s leadership experience is fundamentally influenced by gender. As greater numbers of women fill educational administration positions previously held by men (Addi-Raccah, 2006; Rusch & Marshall, 2006), opportunities to study leadership differences and effectiveness of men and women in meeting unique demands of their campuses can be measured. Although issues related to women leaders in superintendent positions have been explored (Tallerico, 1999; Brunner, 1999; …

Meta-Analysis: Fatigue Does Not Increase Lower-Limb Injury Risk, Tim L. Doyle
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study sought to resolve a long-standing debate in the literature about whether or not fatigue causes lower-limb injury. For the purposes of this research, fatigue was considered chronically (time of the season) and acutely (game time). From a possible 1349 (727 after duplicated removed) articles identified that related to lower-limb musculoskeletal injuries, 15 met inclusion criteria, which provided 21 data sets. A meta-analysis on the available data sets determined that neither acute nor chronic fatigue had any influence on the likelihood of sustaining an injury to the lower limb. Additionally, this research demonstrated that injury researchers have not traditionally …

Does Isoinertial Ergometry Profiling Represent On-Water Sprint Capacity In Kayakers?, Catherine Shin, Sandy Willmott, David Mullineaux
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Despite frequent use of kayak ergometers for research and monitoring, there are questions over the transference of information gained on ergometers to on-water performance. The aim was to investigate if power and force-velocity (FV) profiles measured on an ergometer reflect sprint velocity (SSVel), stroke rate (SR) and distance per stroke (DPS), on-water. National level kayakers (n = 27) completed maximal on-water 100 m sprints and profiling on an isoinertial kayak ergometer. Pull power (PullP) on the ergometer was found to explain 85% of variance in SSvel, as well as being significantly related to SR (r = 0.80; p < 0.01). Maximal force was found to correlate to PullP (r = 0.80; p < 0.01), SSVel (r = 0.78; p < 0.01) and SR (r = 0.70; p < 0.01), but not to DPS. Ergometer data can be used to predict on-water performance factors but SR/DPS use does not appear to be linked to FV gradient.
