Identifying Risk Factors Associated With Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Lesbians, Sofia S. Velazquez Dec 2018

Identifying Risk Factors Associated With Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Lesbians, Sofia S. Velazquez

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of female deaths in the United States (1). While women, in general, are at risk for CVD, current research indicates that sexual minority women (i.e. lesbians and bisexual women [SMW]) may be at greater risk for CVD than heterosexual women. This heightened risk potentially stems from an increased prevalence of traditional CVD risk factors in SMW, creating health disparities between SMW and their heterosexual counterparts (2). Further research into this high-risk population is needed, in order to minimize these disparities.

The purpose of this study was to establish differences in the prevalence of …

Review: Canids Of The World: Wolves, Wild Dogs, Foxes, Jackals, Coyotes, And Their Relatives. José R. Castelló., Jonathan (Jon) Way Dec 2018

Review: Canids Of The World: Wolves, Wild Dogs, Foxes, Jackals, Coyotes, And Their Relatives. José R. Castelló., Jonathan (Jon) Way

The Prairie Naturalist

Canids of the World is one of those reads where just when you think that something cannot be beat, this book comes out. What I mean by that is that I have read many works on wolves and other canids, most recently Nate Blakeslee’s American Wolf (Way 2017), and I have enjoyed and been enthralled with many of them. But Canids of the World may take the cake for being the most impressive book available on canids. For a modest price of just under $30.00, you can own a book that has over 600 amazing high-resolution glossy photographs of every …

The Politeness Package: Detecting Politeness In Natural Language, Michael Yeomans, Alejandro Kantor, Dustin Tingley Dec 2018

The Politeness Package: Detecting Politeness In Natural Language, Michael Yeomans, Alejandro Kantor, Dustin Tingley

The R Journal

This package provides tools to extract politeness markers in English natural language. It also allows researchers to easily visualize and quantify politeness between groups of documents. This package combines and extends prior research on the linguistic markers of politeness (Brown and Levinson, 1987; Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil et al., 2013; Voigt et al., 2017). We demonstrate two applications for detecting politeness in natural language during consequential social interactions— distributive negotiations, and speed dating.

Sarima Analysis And Automated Model Reports With Bets, An R Package, Talitha F. Speranza, Pedro C. Ferreira, Jonatha A. Da Costa

The R Journal

This article aims to demonstrate how the powerful features of the R package BETS can be applied to SARIMA time series analysis. BETS provides not only thousands of Brazilian economic time series from different institutions, but also a range of analytical tools, and educational resources. In particular, BETS is capable of generating automated model reports for any given time series. These reports rely on a single function call and are able to build three types of models (SARIMA being one of them). The functions need few inputs and output rich content. The output varies according to the inputs and usually …

Integrating Global And Local Forecasting Resources And Methods For Flood Warning Systems In Central America And Caribbean Region, José Fidel Pérez Dec 2018

Integrating Global And Local Forecasting Resources And Methods For Flood Warning Systems In Central America And Caribbean Region, José Fidel Pérez

Theses and Dissertations

Hurricanes and tropical storms occur very frequently in the Central American and Caribbean Region (CA&CR). These extreme weather events produce a lot of rain and consequently a lot of flooding. Damages and loses have been estimated to amount to 13.4 billion dollars in the last ten years. Flood Warning Systems (FEWS) are a key preventive strategy to reduce risk. Technological progress is improving the resources made available for FEWS to be more viable. In spite of the international support for FEWS and the fast development of ICT, there are very few countries in the CA&CR that have succeeded in developing …

Discovery Of Paleotsunami Deposits Along Eastern Sunda Arc: Potential For Megathrust Earthquakes In Bali, Hanif Ibadurrahman Sulaeman Dec 2018

Discovery Of Paleotsunami Deposits Along Eastern Sunda Arc: Potential For Megathrust Earthquakes In Bali, Hanif Ibadurrahman Sulaeman

Theses and Dissertations

Several laterally extensive candidate tsunami deposits are preserved along coastlines facing the eastern Java Trench, indicating it has experienced mega-thrust earthquakes in the past. We investigated 37 coastal sites in Bali, Lombok, Sumba and Timor islands, many of which preserve course sand and pebble layers that overlie sharp basal contacts with scour marks into the mud, fine upward in grain size, and have bimodal grain size distributions. Other unique features are the common occurrence of marine fossils and concentrations of heavy minerals. The occurrence of these high-energy deposits interlayered with clay-rich units indicates the coarse clastics are anomalous because they …

Wall Shear Stress In Simplified And Scanned Avian Respiratory Airways, Michael Sterling Farnsworth Dec 2018

Wall Shear Stress In Simplified And Scanned Avian Respiratory Airways, Michael Sterling Farnsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Birds uniquely produce sound through a vocal organ known as a syrinx. The presence of wall shear stress acting on the airway cells of any organism will affect how airway cells develop and multiply. Unique features of avian airway geometry and breathing pattern might have contributed to the development of the syrinx. This thesis examines wall shear stress in the trachea and first bronchi of avian geometries using computational fluid dynamics. The computational fluid dynamic simulations underwent grid- and time-independence studies and were validated using particle image velocimetry. Parameters such as bird size, bronchial branching angle, and breathing waveform were …

Security Analysis And Recommendations For Coniks As A Pki Solution For Mobile Apps, George Bradley Spendlove Dec 2018

Security Analysis And Recommendations For Coniks As A Pki Solution For Mobile Apps, George Bradley Spendlove

Theses and Dissertations

Secure mobile apps, including end-to-end encrypted messaging apps such as Whats-App and Signal, are increasingly popular today. These apps require trust in a centralized key directory to automatically exchange the public keys used to secure user communication. This trust may be abused by malicious, subpoenaed, or compromised directories. A public key infrastructure (PKI) solution that requires less trust would increase the security of these commonly used apps.CONIKS is a recent PKI proposal that features transparent key directories which publish auditable digests of the public keys they present to queriers. By monitoring its key every time a new digest is published, …

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

A systematic search was conducted across eight databases using the keywords: “measure*, scale*, father* or paternal*, and involve*. A final sample of 17 studies were identified for a systematic review. A total of eleven (five child-reported and six father-reported) father involvement scales were used in the studies. Guided by a heuristic contextual model of father involvement, secondary data from Waves 5 and 9 of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study were analyzed to assess the effects of father involvement (mother and father report of father involvement) at five years of age on children’s internalizing, externalizing, and delinquency behaviors and …

Behavioral And Local Field Potential Changes In The Thalamus And Anterior Cingulate Cortex Of Behaving Rats Experiencing Post Herpetic Neuralgia, Jennifer Strand Dec 2018

Behavioral And Local Field Potential Changes In The Thalamus And Anterior Cingulate Cortex Of Behaving Rats Experiencing Post Herpetic Neuralgia, Jennifer Strand

Psychology Theses - Archive

Post herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is experienced as burning pain in the facial region, caused by nerve damage from the herpes zoster virus. The pain often becomes chronic and debilitating. Investigations into the pain pathway become vital. Pain itself is multidimensional, consisting of both the sensory and affective experiences. One of the primary brain substrates for transmitting sensory signals in the facial muscles is through ventral posterior medial thalamus (VPM). Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been shown to be vital in the affective experience of pain, so investigating both of these areas in freely behaving animals can provide important information. Local …

Optimal Control Methods For Chagas Disease, Francis Mastrome Dec 2018

Optimal Control Methods For Chagas Disease, Francis Mastrome

Mathematics Theses - Archive

Chagas disease is the world's most neglected tropical disease. Having a lack of cure makes the primary focus on the disease preventing it and controlling it. This study takes into account three different control measures: bed nets, low-volume insecticide spraying, and improving housing conditions, analyzes their cost effectiveness compared to each other, and determines which combination of the three control measures prevents the most T. cruzi infections in a rural Latin American village over a decade. It was shown that there is a a hierarchical importance in the control measures when preventing the spread of Chagas disease. In order of …

Evaluating The Impact Of Age And Time On Sensory And Affective Levels Of Pain Processing, Maxine Kaylen Geltmeier Dec 2018

Evaluating The Impact Of Age And Time On Sensory And Affective Levels Of Pain Processing, Maxine Kaylen Geltmeier

Psychology Theses - Archive

The relationship between pain and age has been studied for decades. However, research has produced conflicting results for pain thresholds and pain affect in clinical assessments. Likewise, pre-clinical research is conflicting and sparse, limiting the extent of any overarching conclusions. Despite conflicting results on directionality (higher thresholds verses lower thresholds), pain sensitivity and pain affect seem to change with age. Two major arguments have surfaced to explain these differences. The first is, the aging process can lead to changes in peripheral pain signals of pain pathways. The second is, higher order processes that evaluate pain information change with age. For …

Motivators Of Prostitution Desistance, Shawn Nicole Guy Dec 2018

Motivators Of Prostitution Desistance, Shawn Nicole Guy

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The intent of this thesis was to determine the factors that lead to desistance from street prostitution in the form of motivators and how to shape recommendations to courts, social services, and policy-makers based off of identified themes. Additionally, various theories are discussed, supporting the presence of identified motivators and themes, that could be used by interventionsists as guiding principles when working on strategies for prostitution desistance modifications. Without isolating and stratifying motivators and themes, prostitutes who desire to desist may not receive appropiate treatments and interventions and may continue to recidivate with prostitution-related criminal charges. Statements obtained through qualitative …

Sub-Synchronous Control Interaction – Modeling And Detection, Farshid Salehi Dec 2018

Sub-Synchronous Control Interaction – Modeling And Detection, Farshid Salehi

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Power systems have recently become more susceptible to Sub-Synchronous Control Interaction (SSCI) due to the increasing penetration of renewable generation resources and series compensated lines. Any contingency which results in a radial condition between renewable generation resources and near-by series compensated lines might trigger an undamped SSCI oscillation. This is a purely electrical phenomenon which has potential to grow rapidly. Undamped SSCI oscillation can cause serious damage to the renewable generation resources and transmission elements and consequently leads to cascading outages. Due to the importance of the phenomena and its potential impacts, this research has focused on two aspects of …

“Tie The Flags Together”: Migration, Nativism, And The Orange Order In The United States, 1840-1930, Cory D. Wells

History Dissertations - Archive

“Tie the Flags Together”: Migration, Nativism, and the Orange Order in the United States, 1840-1930 Cory Wells Throughout the nineteenth century, tens of thousands of Irish Protestants who migrated to the United States joined the Orange Order in their newly adopted country. Formed in Ulster in the 1790s, the Loyal Orange Institution existed to maintain Protestant hegemony in Ireland. It quickly spread throughout the anglophone Atlantic, especially to Britain and Canada. As the number of Irish Catholics immigrating to America steadily rose, reaching new heights during the Famine, so did the anti-immigrant rhetoric that culminated in the American nativist movement. …

Strength, Tradition, And Adaptation: Native American Women In Pontiac's War, The Trail Of Tears, And The Wounded Knee Massacre, Stephanie Renee Zwinggi Dec 2018

Strength, Tradition, And Adaptation: Native American Women In Pontiac's War, The Trail Of Tears, And The Wounded Knee Massacre, Stephanie Renee Zwinggi

History Theses - Archive

Native American women have largely been excluded from American history. Although there are a few Native female figures that are highlighted, such as Pocahontas and Sacagawea, the complexities and vastness of Native female cultures have been kept in the shadows. This is unfortunate because of the beauty and strength that lies in the many different traditional Native female cultures. I believe such information should be included in the histories of commonly remembered historical events involving Native American peoples, because it would make the histories richer, more accurate, and more inclusive. Highlighting Native female roles and perspectives in historical events would …
