Crafting An Empire: The Hereke Factory Campus (1842-1914), Didem Yavuz
Crafting An Empire: The Hereke Factory Campus (1842-1914), Didem Yavuz
Dissertations
One of the starkest examples of the Ottoman Empire's new modernity was the fabrics and carpet model factory founded at Hereke in 1842. This dissertation focuses on the evolving conditions and social developments that took place over seventy-two years of production at Hereke, and discuss that the factory represented a microcosm of the Empire's wider industrial labor history. Hereke was used as a lens through which to explore a range of themes that, taken together, highlight the lifestyles of the early Ottoman workforce and its industrial relations: labor management, industrial action, child labor, class, gender, housing, education, clothing fashion, the …

Memory And Food In Philippine Literature: A Molecular ‘Re-Siting’ Of The Filipino Kitchen, Lawdenmarc Decamora
Memory And Food In Philippine Literature: A Molecular ‘Re-Siting’ Of The Filipino Kitchen, Lawdenmarc Decamora
Mabini Review
The paper explores the relationship of food and memory in selected Philippine literary works as textual monuments in confronting the traditionally molar Filipino kitchen. The articulated memory figures help relay common segmentarities and similitudes recounted in the narratives depicting the Filipino kitchen as rather molecular, minoritarian, hence ‘re- sited’ a posteriori into a plane of recall and revision. Asymmetrically, the morphing capacity of the Filipino kitchen is favoured in order to escape the dualism machine that still consigns traditional culinary practices to the molar system of domesticity and monumentality. The process of refunctioning traditional kitchens encapsulates both the dynamics of …

Jean Luc-Godard and Jacques Ranciere are two of the most important intellectuals of their time— the first is a filmmaker whose films are considered to be some of the best French Cinema has produced, the latter is a philosopher whose works continue to immensely influence the intellectual current of the world. While it can be said that their lives did not intersect, their respective oeuvres are not totally different from each other, in fact, Ranciere in his works on Cinema has continuously referenced the films of Godard in explaining his theoretical concepts, and Godard for his part, although he never …

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) are essential for immune competence. Here we show that pDC precursor differentiated from human CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) has low surface expression of pDC markers, and has limited induction of type I interferon (IFN) and IL-6 upon TLR7 and TLR9 agonists treatment; by contrast, cGAS or RIG-I agonists-mediated activation is not altered. Importantly, after priming with type I and II IFN, these precursor pDCs attain a phenotype and functional activity similar to that of peripheral blood-derived pDCs. Data from CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing of HSPCs further show that HSPC-pDCs with genetic modifications can be …
Seodang: A Pilgrimage Toward Knowledge/Action And "Us-Ness" In The Community, Seungho Moon
Seodang: A Pilgrimage Toward Knowledge/Action And "Us-Ness" In The Community, Seungho Moon
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this article is to present a Korean theory of epistemology and to provide an epistemological embodiment of Korean epistemology as it appears in a traditional, local village school called a seodang. A seodang’s curriculum is grounded upon individualized instruction and whole person education and emphasizes mutually respectful relationships that sustain supportive local communities. I have attempted to create an intersection between cultural elements present within Korea’s indigenous knowledge and innovative research methodology by making use of multilingual representations, visual interpretations of the text, and cultural poetry. By weaving together these two stripes of epistemology and methodology, I …
Gender Identity And Justice In Nigeria: An Appraisal Of Women In Lagos State, Oluwaseun Olanrewaju
Gender Identity And Justice In Nigeria: An Appraisal Of Women In Lagos State, Oluwaseun Olanrewaju
The Journal of Social Encounters
This paper examines gender identity and justice in the light of gender discrimination against women in Nigeria. Through the use of primary research, with the specific focus on women resident in Lagos state, the findings of this research show that in Nigeria, women are often considered as subservient to men. This paper therefore asserts that there is an urgent need to address gender inequality in order to create a gender balanced society. Furthermore, the paper concludes that gender equality will translate to justice for women and empower them to contribute positively to the overall development of Nigeria.
Prospek Diplomasi Indonesia Dalam Kerjasama Selatan-Selatan: Refleksi Teoritis Kajian Kapitalisme Konsumen Di Era Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Ziyad Falahi
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
This paper analyzes the consumer capitalism in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration and its influence to Indonesian diplomacy. Study of consumer capitalism is relevant in analyzing the case of South-South cooperation that reflects new model of international division of labor. Consumer capitalism divides Southern countries into two types, producers, such as China, India, Brazil, and Russia, and consumers, such as Indonesia. Indonesian government's plan to be vital part of South-South Cooperation needs to be requestioned, considering Indonesia's economy that heavily relied on consumption. Consumer capitalism can become a buffer of the Indonesian economy to face the 2008 global crisis, but its …

Cultural Priming And Psychosocial Factors In The Achievement Of Hispanic And White Students, Richard Peters
Cultural Priming And Psychosocial Factors In The Achievement Of Hispanic And White Students, Richard Peters
Educational Studies Dissertations
The rationale for this study is that the achievement gap between Whites and Hispanics can be influenced by reconceptualizing the learner process as one that integrates culture, motivation, and psychosocial variables, with academic performance. The study investigated the role of three psychosocial variables in achievement: familism, academic self concept, and ethnocentrism. It also reconceptualized one’s culture as a toolkit for instrumental use on tasks in another culture, adopted the dynamic constructivist approach to culture’s influence, and applied the original definition of acculturation, of mutual influence of groups in contact, to achievement. A pretest/posttest comparison group design was used. White and …

Cultural Research To Action: Course Design For Intersectional Cultural Competency, Dmitri S. Seals
Cultural Research To Action: Course Design For Intersectional Cultural Competency, Dmitri S. Seals
eJournal of Public Affairs
Intersectional understandings of diversity present a challenge to the traditional pursuit of cultural competency in public affairs, demanding an approach that accounts for the dynamism and internal diversity of cultural categories. Programs aimed at preparing future public affairs professionals to succeed in diverse settings must have pedagogical tools that equip their students to learn from and engage with intersectional cultural difference. This field report analyzes a pilot project in cultural sociology—a sub-discipline rarely associated with public affairs practice—that used discourse analysis, participatory action research, and intersectionality theory to engage students in designing culturally competent programs and policies. Reviewing current models …
Cultural Humility: An Open Door For Planners To Locate Themselves And Decolonize Planning Theory, Education, And Practice, Elizabeth L. Sweet
Cultural Humility: An Open Door For Planners To Locate Themselves And Decolonize Planning Theory, Education, And Practice, Elizabeth L. Sweet
eJournal of Public Affairs
Cultural humility can help planning faculty, students, and practitioners commit to ongoing self-reflection and critique of their social, cultural, racial, gendered, and other identities in an effort to identify how they are implicated in inequity, especially in relation to working in communities of color. While cultural competence has become an increasingly popular way to encourage more equitable relationships between professionals and communities, the author suggests that the colonial underpinnings of its logic make it not only less desirable than cultural humility but also a potential facilitator of inequity in planning work. Drawing from her experience as a planning theorist and …

Graphic Representations Of Grammatical Gender In Spanish Language Anarchist Publications, Mariel Mercedes Acosta Matos
Publications and Research
This paper offers a descriptive analysis of the suffixes -@, -x, -e and other orthographic innovations as transgressions to the genderedness of Spanish language. First I discuss the grammatical rules of expressing gender in Spanish and a summary of the ongoing debates concerning linguistic sexism and androcentrism in Spanish language. Then I present some examples of the gender neutral suffixes drawn from articles found in 3 “Do It Yourself” journals published online by three anarchist collectives in Latin America.

The phytonutrient ursolic acid (UA), present in apples, rosemary, and other plant sources, has anti-cancer properties in a number of systems, including skin cancers. However, few reports have examined upstream mechanisms by which UA may prevent or treat cancer. Recent reports have indicated UA induces death of cancer cell lines via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an energy-sensing kinase which possesses both pro-metabolic and anti-cancer effects. Other studies have shown UA activates peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α (PPARα) and the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). Here, we found the cytotoxic effect of UA in skin carcinoma cells required AMPK activation. In addition, two …
Different Choices: A Public School Community’S Responses To School Choice Reforms, Amanda U. Potterton
Different Choices: A Public School Community’S Responses To School Choice Reforms, Amanda U. Potterton
The Qualitative Report
In the United States, state and federal reforms increasingly encourage the expansion of school choice policies. Debates about school choice contrast various concepts of freedom and equality with concerns about equity, justice, achievement, democratic accountability, profiting management organizations, and racial and class segregation. Arizona’s “market”-based school choice programs include over 600 charter schools, and the state’s open enrollment practices, public and private school tax credit allowances, and Empowerment Scholarships, (closely related to vouchers), flourish. This qualitative analysis explores one district-run public school and its surrounding community, and I discuss socio-political and cultural tensions related to school choice reforms that exist …
Treating Resistance As Data In Qualitative Interviews, Dimitra Kizlari, Kalliopi Fouseki
Treating Resistance As Data In Qualitative Interviews, Dimitra Kizlari, Kalliopi Fouseki
The Qualitative Report
Scientific interviews provide a useful resource for qualitative researchers studying people’s perceptions on contemporary phenomena. This article contributes to the large body of literature on qualitative interviews by investigating a rather common but under-reported pattern in interviews, that of resistance. Resistance is a form of power that the participant maintains and can exercise at any moment. The phenomenon knows various expressions from a refusal on the side of the participant to sign the consent form to question dodging or embellished accounts. Two case studies are used to underpin the basic argument that resistance in interviews may be a valuable finding …

Perceptions Of Non-Americans Towards American Tv Series, Thaarika Charumathy Seetharaman
Theses
Television drama is one of the most entertaining genre of the media industry, and it serves as a socialization platform (Greenberg, 1982). American TV series have gained audience and fans from all around the world which opens up the scope for examining the effects of American media on the secondary audience. Drawing on the framework of cultivation theory, this study examined the effect of American TV series on non-American population. The results suggested that the cultivation effects are dependent on age and gender of the respondents, in connection with the genre of the series influencing the audience’s framing of the …
Equitable Co-Management On The Kuskokwim River, Chris Mcdevitt
Equitable Co-Management On The Kuskokwim River, Chris Mcdevitt
Arctic and Northern Studies
A legally empowered equitable co-management system of the Kuskokwim River salmon fishery between subsistence users and state and federal managers does not exist. Despite federal legislation Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) (Section 8) calling for a "meaningful role" for subsistence users in managing fish and game on federal lands, some rural subsistence users believe that they have yet to assume a "meaningful role" in the policy-making process. The absolute maximum capacity that subsistence users can fulfill in terms of participating in the management of the resources they depend on comes in the form of one of many advisory …
Development Of Macromolecular Prodrug Conjugates For The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Musculoskeletal Diseases, Xin Wei
Theses & Dissertations
Macromolecular prodrug conjugate is a promising strategy for better diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. Our lab has pioneered this effort and has successfully developed multiple prodrug formulations. The general approach we have taken is to incorporate active ingredient (AI, including imaging probe or therapeutic agents) containing monomers into water-soluble and biocompatible polymers, such as N-(2-Hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA) copolymers. Structural parameters of these polymeric prodrugs, such as molecular weight (MW), drug loading, prodrug activation mechanism and the selection of drug payload may greatly affect therapeutic efficacy and the safety of the macromolecular prodrugs. To investigate the impact of these …

Culturally Relevant Curriculum And Instruction In A Culture Of Care, Johan Von Ancken
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This capstone project was part of a group project completed by five school and district administrators in Hillsborough County, Florida. The project began because of our passion for teachers who are able to establish a culture of care in their classrooms that support students academically but transform their learning through experiences that enable them to be more highly engaged and productive students, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, perceived academic abilities, and backgrounds.
Our school district has spent significant resources attempting to address the deficiencies that exist within its lower performing schools. A variety of curriculum specialists have addressed challenges these …

What Makes People Actually Embrace Or Shun Mobile Payment: A Cross-Culture Study, Yali Zhang, Jun Sun, Zhaojun Yang, Ying Wang
Information Systems Faculty Publications
Mobile payment is becoming increasingly popular, but it encounters the resistance from certain user groups. This study examines the factors that influence both the technology acceptance and actual usage aspects of mobile payment adoption from the perspective of the general systems theory. Based on a literature review, it conceptualizes the embedding relationships among relevant behavioral processes, personal characteristics, and extrinsic factors and develops a research model. Together, the extrinsic factors in terms of culture, subjective norm, and socioeconomic status and main personal characteristics including demographics, personality traits, and past behavior are hypothesized to have direct and moderating effects on mobile …

Samuel Pepys, Honor, And Emergent Bureaucracy In Later Seventeenth Century England, Michael Fitzhugh
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that the mentality of honor, deriving from ancient Germanic and perhaps Roman culture and the major component of the knightly medieval ethos, played an important role in the formation of modern bureaucracy. The dissertation makes this argument by offering a case study of Samuel Pepys, a civil servant in the naval administration of later Stuart England (the reigns of Charles II and James II). The argument begins with a Prologue that describes honor's most important social component, lordship, and discusses the ways in which current scholarship on the transition from early modern to fully modern times strongly …

The People We Like: Do Introversion-Extroversion And Commitment Affect Evaluation Of Potential Partners?, Naquan Ross
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The present study assessed whether similarity of a hypothetical partner on Introversion-Extroversion, along with partner preference for long-term or short-term relationships, might vary according to participants’ own Introversion-Extroversion. MANOVA results suggest three important points. First, ratings by extrovert participants showed higher levels of romantic interest for extroverted, rather than introverted, hypothetical partners; introvert participants’ ratings did not differ between introvert and extrovert partners on this dimension. Second, the similarity of the participant and the hypothetical partner on Introversion-Extroversion appeared to influence interpersonal interest, romantic interest, and commitment potential. Last, the partner’s commitment level may drive participants’ non-platonic interest and potential …

Parodies Of Qing: Ironic Voices In Romantic Chuanqi Plays, Yanbing Tan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation looks into tongue-in-cheek moments in Chinese romantic chuanqi plays of the late 17th and 18th centuries and examines their reflections on the chuanqi dramatic genre and its close ties to the discourse of qing (sentiment, feeling). The discourse of qing during the late imperial era highlighted emotional authenticity and spontaneity as the defining elements of oneճ self and celebrated romantic love as an important manifestation of such elements. After Tang Xianzuճ dramatic masterpiece, The Peony Pavilion (Mudanting, 1598), pushed the literary rendition of the discourse of qing to its peak, chuanqi became an important vehicle for representing deep …
