Native American Women Parenting Off Reservations: A Phenomenological Study, Xan.Creighton Beverley Creighton Jan 2018

Native American Women Parenting Off Reservations: A Phenomenological Study, Xan.Creighton Beverley Creighton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

For each parent, raising a child is a daunting task and it is even a harder undertaking for parents belonging to minority communities due to discrimination, and limited occupational and educational opportunities. Prior studies have shown high dropout rates from high school among Native American (NA) women, resulting in a lack of basic knowledge about raising children. The purpose of this research study was to synthesize, analyze, and better understand the lived experiences of NA mothers who are raising their children outside the reservation. This qualitative study relied on 4 theories: historical trauma theory, systems theory, acculturation theory, and strengths …

Comedian Hosts And The Demotic Turn, Kathleen Collins Jan 2018

Comedian Hosts And The Demotic Turn, Kathleen Collins

Publications and Research

Podcasting is a showcase for what cultural studies scholar Graeme Turner coined “the demotic turn” or the increasing visibility of the "ordinary person" in the today’s media landscape. Collins argues that the emergence of a particular breed of podcasts – comedian-hosted interviews with celebrities – function in an “off-label” manner as a form of self-help or vicarious therapy. The emergence and rapid growth of this genre can attributed to three main factors: a confessional culture, the triumph of experience over expertise, and the democratization allowed by the form’s technology. She explores the link between emotional intimacy and comedy, and analyzes …

Guidelines For Adapting Structural Family Therapy Approach For Immigrant Generation East Asian American Families, Shijia Liu Jan 2018

Guidelines For Adapting Structural Family Therapy Approach For Immigrant Generation East Asian American Families, Shijia Liu

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

The author developed detailed guidelines for adapting the structural family therapy approach for therapists who work with immigrant east Asian American families. Due to different acculturation levels among family members, immigrant parents often have conflicts with their children, which have become an important reason why Asian American families seek mental health services. The review of both traditional east Asian family-related cultural values and European American cultural values illustrates the parenting emphases that vary to a great extent between these two broad cultural groups. The widely accepted child development theories, parenting theories, and family therapy approaches were developed primarily based on …

Leadership Strategies Of A Multinational Enterprise In The West Bank, Arafat Abuaziz Jan 2018

Leadership Strategies Of A Multinational Enterprise In The West Bank, Arafat Abuaziz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Business leaders require the appropriate strategies and knowledge to successfully grow their companies through international expansion. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the West Bank in Palestine often encounter complex barriers as the executives of the firms explore business opportunities in foreign countries. The objective of this single case study was to explore, in depth, the perspectives of business leaders from a population of executives of an MNE in the West Bank. The conceptual framework used in the study was cultural intelligence. The selected multinational business leaders participated in semistructured, face-to-face interviews followed by member checking. The 2 executives of the MNE …

The Relationship Between Memorable Messages And Identity Construction, Raphaela P. Barros Campbell Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Memorable Messages And Identity Construction, Raphaela P. Barros Campbell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A qualitative analysis is reported here, in which 22 international students were interviewed about their overall experiences studying abroad, as well as memorable messages received and the context in which those were communicated. Scholars like Larson and Gill (2017) and Alvesson (2010) have focused on the role communication plays in constructing identity. With that in mind, Knapp et al.’s (1981) concept of memorable messages informs how specific messages influence individuals’ sense of who they are. This study expands knowledge on the relationship between memorable messages and international students’ identity construction, focusing on the impact of messages exchanged before and during …

Wonder Woman: A Case Study For Critical Media Literacy, Adriana N. Fehrs Jan 2018

Wonder Woman: A Case Study For Critical Media Literacy, Adriana N. Fehrs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

To better grasp the messages Wonder Woman is sending to its audience, a Critical Media Literacy (CML), ideological, and feminist framework is used to examine whether, and if so how, Wonder Woman succumbs to stereotypes that are often portrayed in the media. These theories will be used in the ensuing project to build a curriculum aimed at high school students. The curriculum positions students to examine the hegemonic ideologies that are represented in pop culture, specifically Wonder Woman.

Stability For A Small Historic House Museum: Drafting A Collection Management Policy For The Trinidad Museum, Alexandra Mackay Cox Jan 2018

Stability For A Small Historic House Museum: Drafting A Collection Management Policy For The Trinidad Museum, Alexandra Mackay Cox

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

A museum exists and is defined primarily by its collection. It is therefore important for a museum to manage its collection effectively while preserving it for long-term use. The size and scope of the museum's collection will determine the complexity of its policy. As such, all museums, including small ones, need a well-defined Collection Management Policy (CMP). This policy outlines what and how to collect, defines the development and use of the collection as well as procedures for the care of the collection, the loaning of items and removing of items from the museum's collection. The Trinidad Museum, a small …

Mocking Hobbes: Florida’S Stand Your Ground Law As Imagining A State Of Nature, Mumbi Ngugi Jan 2018

Mocking Hobbes: Florida’S Stand Your Ground Law As Imagining A State Of Nature, Mumbi Ngugi

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In his 1651 Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes argues that without systems of law and formal government, people live a state of nature wherein there is a “war of all against all”. “The right of nature... jus natural,” Hobbes writes, “is the liberty each man has to use his own power... for the preservation of his own nature- that is to say, of his own life.” The war of all against all is concomitant of the absence of law. People’s lives are “nasty, brutish and short”. Consequently, laws, through reason, regulate the subjective basis of all action in such a state of …

The Mesmerized Mind: A Literary And Anthropological Analysis Of The Suspension Of Reality, Devan Schnecker Jan 2018

The Mesmerized Mind: A Literary And Anthropological Analysis Of The Suspension Of Reality, Devan Schnecker

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

“Mesmeric literature” includes a subset of British Romantic poetry that contains elements of engagement, detachment, and a precarious suspension of reality. Essentially, the mesmeric is a facet of a broader field on altered states of consciousness, which comprises a removal of the self from the body and a division between spiritual and material matters. This thesis will focus on how the “mesmeric,” or “altered states of consciousness,” manifests cross-culturally in late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century British Romantic poetry, shamanic healing practices in Amazonian Ecuador, and San healing trance dances in the Kalahari Desert. Through an anthropological and literary lens, this thesis …

Articulating Digital Archival Practice Within Writing Program Administration: A Theoretical Framework, Amanda Girard Jan 2018

Articulating Digital Archival Practice Within Writing Program Administration: A Theoretical Framework, Amanda Girard

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Throughout Writing Program Administration scholarship there has been a clear call for archivization and archival work. This dissertation project takes an interdisciplinary approach to digital archival practices for Writing Program Administrators to consider and employ in their home institutions. While I recognize that WPAs are not typically identified as “archivists,” I situate the digital archive within the digital humanities as an interdisciplinary, collaborative project and offer suggestions that lead to recommendations for making an institutional archive. I review archival practice in order to justify the digital archive as an appropriate vehicle for WPAs’ work. Further, I argue that the digital …

Repackaging The Reach Of Dreams: News Coverage Of Daca Rescindment By Three National Newspapers On Twitter, Megan Pietruszewski Jan 2018

Repackaging The Reach Of Dreams: News Coverage Of Daca Rescindment By Three National Newspapers On Twitter, Megan Pietruszewski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This thesis examines the frames used by three news organizations to cover the rescindment of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The rescindment of DACA was a pivotal transition period open to new immigration policy, and frames used in the news coverage of DACA are important as frames influence public opinion and possible future immigration policy. This study uses corpus linguistic methods and Van Gorp’s inductive framing analysis to explore how a complex political decision like DACA rescindment is covered in condensed news stories on Twitter as well as in full-length news articles. The Executive Critique frame, which …

Struggling Toward An American National Theatre, Rebecca Ann Soderna Jan 2018

Struggling Toward An American National Theatre, Rebecca Ann Soderna

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The United States is conspicuously lacking in a large-scale government subsidy program for the arts and has never established a National Theatre. This makes us unique among most developed nations in the world as well as among many developing countries that established national theatres early in their burgeoning histories, and it begs the question: why has government support of the cultural life of the nation never been a priority in the U.S.? One notable exception to this can be found in considering the work accomplished by the Federal Arts Projects created under the auspices of the Work Progress Administration (WPA) …

Positively Charged Particles From Amphiphilic Chitosan For Plasmid Dna Delivery, Tinnakorn Phuangkaew Jan 2018

Positively Charged Particles From Amphiphilic Chitosan For Plasmid Dna Delivery, Tinnakorn Phuangkaew

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Amphiphilic chitosan derivatives have been well regarded as potential non-viral vectors for gene delivery. Their hydrophobic entities could promote cell permeability whereas their hydrophilic entities especially those carrying positive charges can interact with the negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA. Here in this research, a series of amphiphilic chitosan derivatives were synthesized. Linear hydrocarbon of two different chain length: hexyl (C6) and dodecyl (C12) were substituted at amino groups of chitosan via reductive alkylation with hexanal and dodecanal and yielded two hydrophobized chitosan derivatiives, hexyl chitosan (HCS) and dodecyl chitosan (DCS), respectively. Phthaloyl chitosan (PhCS) was also prepared as another …

Cross-Cultural Study Of The Predictors Of Learning In Children Ages 11-15 Years Old, Nadina Melina Williams Jan 2018

Cross-Cultural Study Of The Predictors Of Learning In Children Ages 11-15 Years Old, Nadina Melina Williams

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Academic achievement is deemed a significant indicator for a successful future. Cognitive ability, home environment, and metacognition are among the many factors research has posited to contribute to academic achievement and later success (Alloway & Alloway, 2010; Bradley & Caldwell, 1984, Veenman, Wilhelm, & Beishuizen, 2004). The present study examines the relation between cognitive ability (working memory (WM) and nonverbal ability), metacognitive awareness, implicit theories of IQ, home environment (socioeconomic status (SES), home life, and parental involvement in homework), and learning outcomes (grades) in two distinct sample populations. The study used a sample of 11-15-year-olds and their parents from two …

Molecular And Evolutionary Analysis Of Cyanobacterial Taxonomic Methods, Chelsea Denise Villanueva Jan 2018

Molecular And Evolutionary Analysis Of Cyanobacterial Taxonomic Methods, Chelsea Denise Villanueva

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cyanobacteria are a group of photo-oxygenic bacteria found in nearly every ecosystem, but much cyanobacterial diversity, in various habitats, has yet to be explored. Cyanobacteria are often conspicuous components of photosynthetic flora, providing significant carbon and nitrogen inputs to surrounding systems. As possible primary colonizers of stone substrates not native to this region, cyanobacteria isolated from headstones may provide biogeographically informative data. An exploratory study of lichen-dominated microbial consortia, growing on headstones, was conducted to isolate and identify novel microaerophytic cyanobacteria, and resulted in the establishment of four novel cyanobacterial taxa. Phylogenetic analyses of photobionts in one tripartite lichen revealed …

Why Do We Want To Think Humans Are Different?, Colin A. Chapman, Michael A. Huffman Jan 2018

Why Do We Want To Think Humans Are Different?, Colin A. Chapman, Michael A. Huffman

Animal Sentience

One harmful consequence of creating categories where one group is unique and superior to others is that it justifies committing negative, often atrocious, acts on the members of the inferior group. Correcting divisive human categorizations (racial superiority, gender superiority) has bettered society. Scholars have often claimed that humans are unique and superior to nonhuman animals. These claims need to be reevaluated. Many have already been refuted. Animals have been shown to outperform humans in many tasks, including cognitive ones. Here we raise the question: Has the false sense of superiority been used to justify human cruelty to animals?

Food Safety Culture: An Underlying Cause For Success And Failures Of Food Safety Management Systems, Ashwini Kumar Vashisht Jan 2018

Food Safety Culture: An Underlying Cause For Success And Failures Of Food Safety Management Systems, Ashwini Kumar Vashisht

Food Safety

Food Safety Culture (FSC) is an emerging behavior-based food-safety management concept. FSC has been linked as an underlying cause for food-safety management-system failures during foodborne outbreaks and recall investigations. This paper reviews the available literature on FSC for the origin, definitions, factors, barriers, and dimensions that influence the FSC’s performance and measurements. Data were obtained from peer-reviewed journals as well as publicly available information on the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) websites. The roles of organizational leadership and communication, food-handler behaviors, risk perception, regulatory authorities, and technological advancements …

Child Inhibitory Control And Maternal Acculturation Moderate Effects Of Maternal Parenting On Chinese American Children’S Adjustment, Jing Yu, Charissa L. Cheah, Craig H. Hart, Chongming Yang

Faculty Publications

The goals of this study were to examine: (a) bidirectional associations between maternal parenting (physical punishment and guilt induction) and Chinese American preschool children’s psychosocial adjustment and (b) the role of maternal cultural orientation and child temperament in moderating parenting effects. Participants were Chinese American mothers and children (N 163, Mage 4.56, 53% boys). Mothers reported on their parenting practices at both Wave 1 (W1) and Wave 2 (W2) and their cultural orientations and children’s inhibitory control at W1. Teachers rated children’s prosocial, internalizing, and externalizing behaviors at both W1 and W2. A Bayesian approach to path analysis was utilized …

Liminally White: Jews, Mormons, And Whiteness, Richard Benjamin Crosby Jan 2018

Liminally White: Jews, Mormons, And Whiteness, Richard Benjamin Crosby

Faculty Publications

Jews and Mormons have pasts as racialized Others. Although they appear dissimilar, both groups have been inscribed historically as non-White. Both groups responded to these inscriptions by attempting to achieve Whiteness, making numerous and radical concessions to U.S. American culture. As a result, both groups became "liminally White". We argue that such liminal status demonstrates the fissures in Whiteness and provides creative new grounds for critiquing Whiteness as a rhetorical construct.

Stories They Tell: The Rhetoric Of Recruiting Independent Consultants, Jacob D. Rawlins, Sarah E. Martin Jan 2018

Stories They Tell: The Rhetoric Of Recruiting Independent Consultants, Jacob D. Rawlins, Sarah E. Martin

Faculty Publications

This study investigates the themes that drive persuasive recruiting appeals, or stories, designed to attract new, entrepreneurial workers in the direct selling industry. It offers a rhetorical perspective informed by fantasy theme analysis on the themes present in the recruiting content on the corporate Web sites of three direct selling companies (Mary Kay, Stella & Dot, and Scentsy). The analysis indicates that rhetorical agency is a core theme in the persuasive recruiting stories for these companies. Offering a means for business and technical communication scholars to explore agency or other persuasive story themes in context, this study addresses how a …

Translinguality And Disciplinary Reinvention, Bruce Horner Jan 2018

Translinguality And Disciplinary Reinvention, Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Dominant narratives of disciplinarity that WAC/WID confronts conflate disciplines with departments and material institutional structures, such as departments and professional organizations—what is here called “departmentality.” The relative autonomy of disciplinarity from departmentality means that challenges to foundational concepts of disciplines are in fact normal to disciplinary work and do not threaten the material institutional structures associated with those disciplines, as illustrated by the history of challenges to foundational disciplinary concepts of basic writing and second language acquisition carried out in disciplinary writing. The relative autonomy of disciplinarity enables us to accept the legitimacy of the challenges translingual theory poses to …

From Exemptions To Censorship: Religious Liberty And Victimhood In Obergefell V. Hodges, Calvin Coker Jan 2018

From Exemptions To Censorship: Religious Liberty And Victimhood In Obergefell V. Hodges, Calvin Coker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article analyzes the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, showing that a subset of the dissent constructed devout religious groups as victims to re-articulate power relations between the state, LGBT groups, and religious entities. This re-articulation is possible as a consequence of ambiguity in the legal concept religious liberty, which is explored in depth. That ambiguity is employed to mount an argument against the decision, moving LGBT individuals from oppressed to oppressor of religious groups. The study contextualizes this inversion against the material and symbolic conditions of both the LGBT, and devout Christian, communities in the United …

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis Facilitates Evolutionary Models Of Culture Change, Cameron M. Smith, Liane Gabora, William Gardner-O’Kearney Jan 2018

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis Facilitates Evolutionary Models Of Culture Change, Cameron M. Smith, Liane Gabora, William Gardner-O’Kearney

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) is beginning to fulfill the whole promise of Darwinian insight through its extension of evolutionary understanding from the biological domain to include cultural information evolution. Several decades of important foundation-laying work took a social Darwinist approach and exhibited ecologically-deterministic elements. This is not the case for more recent developments to the evolutionary study of culture, which emphasize non-Darwinian processes such as self-organization, potentiality, and epigenetic change.
