Three Essays On Public Information And Security Prices., Chen Gu Jan 2018

Three Essays On Public Information And Security Prices., Chen Gu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation includes three essays examining the role of public information in financial markets. The first essay examines informed trading before natural gas inventory announcements. Natural gas futures prices start moving in the “right” direction about 90 minutes before the announcement. The empirical results show that the difference between the median forecast of analysts with high historical forecasting accuracy and the consensus forecast can be used to predict inventory surprises and some of the pre-announcement drift. Because both individual analyst forecasts and consensus are available to Bloomberg subscribers prior to official release time, our results suggest that informed trading before …

Automotive Crisis: Volkswagen's Emissions Scandal & Response Strategies., Kelsey Plute

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of crisis communication strategies (i.e. Coomb’s Situational Crisis Communication Theory and Bradford & Garrett’s Communicative Response Model) by examining Volkswagen’s key messages in U.S. commercial ad campaigns, individual vehicle commercials, and print ads before, during and after the emissions scandal. The content analysis also identified these specific crisis response strategies in the company’s 2015 through 2018 annual reports, press releases and letters to the company shareholders.

Beef Cattle Effluent Treatment In A Denitrifying Bioreactor., Bethani Chambers Jan 2018

Beef Cattle Effluent Treatment In A Denitrifying Bioreactor., Bethani Chambers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Excess nutrient runoff, nitrates and phosphates, has led to the development of algal blooms and hypoxic zones worldwide. Based on a report from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation nearly half of all nutrient sources originate from agricultural production with a quarter of this resulting from improper management of manures. This project focuses on a novel adaption of a denitrifying bioreactor, which has demonstrated removals of agricultural nutrients, which may have implications on the treatment of manure nutrients. These subsurface bioreactors work by providing a substrate, usually wood based, to act as a carbon source to support denitrifying bacteria which in turn …

Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers Jan 2018

Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) and the Bem Sex Role Index (BSRI), this study addresses the potential impact of societally-created, gendered expectations on the satisfaction of emerging adults. Two hundred twenty-nine undergraduates at a large mid-Atlantic university participated in the study by completing an online survey assessing gender, identity, and a relationship with a close other of their choosing. Results replicate previous research using CTI, which suggests that identity gaps relating to gender are dissatisfying. Specifically, gaps at the personal-enacted, personal-relational, and the newly-created personal-personal levels were negatively related to participant satisfaction, and personal-relational gaps were negatively correlated with …

Additive Manufacturing Of Short-Fiber Composites Via Stereolithography, Patrick Glenn Simpson Jan 2018

Additive Manufacturing Of Short-Fiber Composites Via Stereolithography, Patrick Glenn Simpson

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

The effectiveness of using a dual curing system, consisting of a photo and thermal initiator, for the additive manufacturing of carbon fiber short-fiber composites via stereolithography was investigated. The necessary processing parameters were developed that resulted in successful printing and curing of composites at a 5% fiber volume. The effects of layer height and print orientation of the short-fiber composites were evaluated for their effect on the material properties. There was no increase in the flexural modulus or fracture toughness, and a decrease the tensile and flexural strength of the short-fiber composites produced. This was found to be due to …

Survey Of Methods For Achieving Low Gasoline Fuel-Permeation In Rotationally-Molded Articles, Brent Nerenz Jan 2018

Survey Of Methods For Achieving Low Gasoline Fuel-Permeation In Rotationally-Molded Articles, Brent Nerenz

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

The establishment of governmental regulations on the evaporative emission performance of fuel system components has caused molders and their material suppliers to develop innovative materials and processes by which to meet such requirements. Rotational molding is a common processing choice for fuel containers given its ability to produce complex, hollow geometries with consistent wall thickness. A number of strategies have been devised for meeting fuel permeation requirements in rotationally molded containers, each demonstrating significant benefits and detriments to the processor. Single, homogeneous materials have difficulty in simultaneously providing adequate fuel permeation, durability, and affordability. The ability of rotational molding to …

The Role Of The Gut Microbiota In Sustained Weight Loss Following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, Farnaz Fouladi Jan 2018

The Role Of The Gut Microbiota In Sustained Weight Loss Following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, Farnaz Fouladi

Pharmacy

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgery is one of the most effective approaches for the treatment of severe obesity. Despite substantial weight loss following RYGB, a considerable proportion of patients experience weight regain or insufficient weight loss. The proposed research aimed to investigate the role of the gut microbiota in weight regain or suboptimal weight loss following RYGB. The gut microbiota composition in post-RYGB patients who experienced successful weight loss (SWL, n=6), post-RYGB patients who experienced poor weight loss (PWL, n=6), and non-surgical controls (NSC, n=6) who were age- and BMI-matched to the SWL group (NSC, n=6) were characterized through 16S …

Modeling Job Stress Among Police Officers: Interplay Of Work Environment, Counseling Support, And Family Discussion With Co-Workers, Lily Chi-Fang Tsai, Claire Nolasco, Michael S. Vaughn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications (Archived)

Existing literature indicates that various factors affect police stress. This article uses data from the ‘Work and Family Services for Law Enforcement Personnel in the United States, 1995’ downloaded from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (‘ICPSR’) website. Respondents include 594 sworn police officers from 21 agencies in New York City. Using structural equation modeling, results indicate that sex, race, education, and tenure do not have a direct influence on total job stress, but have a direct impact on family discussion with co-workers, counseling support, and negative working environment. Rank has a direct impact on total job stress, …

Effective Teaching For Place Value Understanding: A Case Study Of A Literacy-Integrated Math Curriculum Module, Young Rae Kim, Mi Sun Park Jan 2018

Effective Teaching For Place Value Understanding: A Case Study Of A Literacy-Integrated Math Curriculum Module, Young Rae Kim, Mi Sun Park

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications (Archived)

A lesson sequence for place value was developed as an early intervention for kindergarteners. The sequence begins with a children’s picture book involving language familiar to children and continues with hands-on activities for children to make connections between and within multiple representations of place value. Through engaging in the literacy-integrated math curriculum module, kindergartners deepened their understanding of place value and the base-ten number system, as they were consistently engaged in problem solving and mathematical discourse triggered by their own mathematical thinking, as well as purposeful questions prompted by the teacher.

Multi-Scale Simulation Methods Of Crosslinked Polymer Networks And Degradation, Aaron James Feickert Jan 2018

Multi-Scale Simulation Methods Of Crosslinked Polymer Networks And Degradation, Aaron James Feickert

Physics

Crosslinked thermoset polymers are used heavily in industrial and consumer products, as well as in infrastructure. When used as a protective coating, a thermoset's net-like structure can act as a barrier to protect an underlying substrate from permeation of moisture, salt, or other chemicals that otherwise weaken the coating or lead to substrate corrosion. Understanding how such coatings degrade, both at microscopic and macroscopic scales, is essential for the development and testing of materials for optimal service life. Several numerical and computational techniques are used to analyze the behavior of model crosslinked polymer networks under changing conditions at a succession …

Guiding Self-Assembly Of Functionalized Nanoparticles By Computational Modeling Of Effective Interactions, Vijay Shah Jan 2018

Guiding Self-Assembly Of Functionalized Nanoparticles By Computational Modeling Of Effective Interactions, Vijay Shah

Physics

Nanoparticles have attracted much attention because of their unusual physical properties, which allow them to be used in many practical applications. The self-assembly of nanocrystals into crystalline arrays can be facilitated by functionalizing the nanocrystals with ligand brushes, allowing for bulk dispersions to be sterically stabilized against aggregation. Studies have been conducted to study the clustering of gold nanoparticle dispersions. To study the self-assembly of gold nanoparticle dispersions based on nanocrystal volume fraction and ligand coverage, we performed Monte Carlo simulations and characterized the ability of the nanoparticle dispersions to self-assemble into crystalline arrays. Experiments have shown that silver nanoparticles …

Free Energy Minimization And Multicomponent, Multi-Phase Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Van Der Waals Fluid Mixtures, Kent Stephen Ridl Jan 2018

Free Energy Minimization And Multicomponent, Multi-Phase Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Van Der Waals Fluid Mixtures, Kent Stephen Ridl

Physics

In this thesis, we develop a general framework for the lattice Boltzmann method to simulate multiphase systems with an arbitrary number of components. Theoretical expectations are easily visualized for binary mixtures, so we focus on characterizing the performance of the method by numerically minimizing the free energy of a binary van der Waals mixture to generate phase diagrams. Our phase diagrams contain very intriguing features that are not well-known in today’s physics community but were understood by van der Waals and his colleagues at the turn of the 20th century. Phase diagrams and lattice Boltzmann simulation results are presented in …

Building A Promise Neighborhood From The Inside Out: A Springfield, Ohio Experiment With Asset-Based Community Development, Eric Robert Smith

Sociology and Anthropology

This paper examines the impact of the Springfield Promise Neighborhood (SPN) initiative on the City of Springfield, Ohio. Launched in August, 2010, SPN adopted an asset-based and resident-driven strategy to transform vulnerable neighborhoods by ensuring the academic and social success of the youth within a defined geographic locality. SPN was conceived as an initiative that would eventually impact all of Springfield by engaging citizens and youth to envision and achieve a preferred future story. The early piloting of the model has taken place in partnership with Lincoln Elementary School and its attendance zone, which represents a 110-block area surrounding the …
